Ziyarat-e-Imam Husain (a.s.) on the Day of Arafah

Text and Translation

The Imam (a.s.) commented, “Rafa’ah, you have thus not failed to gain what those who presented themselves at Mina have gained! Were it not for that I do not want people to desert going on hajj, I would pass on to you a discourse that if you hear it, you will never leave visiting the tomb of al-Husayn, (a.s.) Allah’s blessings be upon you.”

The Imam (a.s.) then paused for a while and then continued, “My father has told me that whoever travels to the tomb of al-Husayn (a.s.) recognizing his actual position and showing no pride, will be accompanied by one thousand angels on his right side and one thousand angels on his left. The reward of one thousand times of hajj and one thousand times of ‘umrah with a prophet or a prophet’s successor will also be recorded for him.”

The method of visiting Imam al-Husayn (a.s.)’s tomb on the ‘Arafat Day, according to the words of master scholars and chiefs of our sect and faith, is as follows:

If you intend to visit Imam al-Husayn (a.s.) (on the ‘Arafat Day), you may bathe yourself using water from the River Euphrates if possible and any other possibly obtained water. You may then put on the purest (and cleanest) of your clothes and walk towards the holy shrine with tranquility and solemnity. When you reach the gate of the holy shrine (i.e. Ha’ir), you may profess Almighty Allah’s most greatness:

اَللهُ اَكْبَرُ

ALLAAHO AKBAR

Allah is the Most Great.

Then, say the following words:

اَللّٰهُ اَكْبَرُ كَبِيْرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ كَثِيْرًا

ALLAAHO AKBARO KABEERAN WAL-HAMDO LILLAAHE KASEERAN

Allah is the Most Great of all. All praise be to Allah very much.

وَسُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ بُكْرَةً وَاَصِيْلًا

WA SUBHAANAL LAAHE BUKRATAWN WA ASEELAN

Glory be to Allah in mornings and evenings.

وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ هَدَانَا لِهٰذَا

WALHAMDO LILLAAHIL LAZEE HADAANAA LE-HAAZAA

All praise be to Allah Who has guided us to this.

وَمَا كُنَّا لِنَهْتَدِيَ لَوْ لَاۤ اَنْ هَدَانَا اللّٰهُ

WA KUNNA LE-NAHTADEYA LAWLAA AN HADAANAL LAAHO

We would not have been guided if Allah had not guided us.

لَقَدْ جَاۤءَتْ رُسُلُ رَبِّنَا بِالْحَقِّ

LAQAD JAA-AT ROSOLO RABBENAA BIL-HAQQE

The messengers of our Lord have indeed come with the truth.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰى رَسُوْلِ اللّٰهِ صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA RASOOLIL LAAHE

Peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, peace of Allah be upon him and his Household.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰى اَمِيْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA AMEERIL MOMENEENA

Peace be upon the Commander of the Faithful.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰى فَاطِمَةَ الزَّهْرَاۤءِ سَيِّدَةِ نِسَاۤءِ الْعَالَمِيْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA FAATEMATAZ ZAHRAAA-E SAYYEDATE NESAAA-IL A’ALAMEENA

Peace be upon Fatimah the luminous and the doyenne of all women of the world.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى الْحَسَنِ وَالْحُسَيْنِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAL HASANE WAL-HUSAYNE

Peace be upon al-Hasan and al-Husayn.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰى عَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA A’LIYYIB NIL HUSAYNE

Peace be upon 'Ali the son of al-Husayn.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA MOHAMMAD IBNE A’LIYYIN

Peace be upon Muhammad the son of 'Ali

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰى جَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA JA’FAR IBNE MOHAMMADIN

Peace be upon Ja'far the son of Muhammad.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰى مُوْسَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA MOOSAB NE JA’FARIN

Peace be upon Musa the son of Ja'far.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰى عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُوْسٰى

ASSALAAMO A’LAA A’LIYY IBNE MOOSAA

Peace be upon ‘Ali the son of Musa.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA MOHAMMAD IBNE A’LIYYIN

Peace be upon Muhammad the son of 'Ali.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰى عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA ALIYY IBNE MOHAMMADIN

Peace be upon 'Ali the son of Muhammad.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ

ASSALAAMO A’LAL HASAN IBNE A’LIYYIN

Peace be upon al-Hasan the son of 'Ali.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَى الْخَلَفِ الصَّالِحِ الْمُنْتَظَرِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAL KHALAFIS SAALEHIL MUNTAZARE

Peace be upon the virtuous Successor and Awaited.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَاۤ اَبَا عَبْدِ اللّٰهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA ABAA A’BDIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O Abu-'Abdullah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ رَسُوْلِ اللّٰهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA RASOOLIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O son of Allah’s Messenger.

عَبْدُكَ وَابْنُ عَبْدِكَ وَابْنُ اَمَتِكَ

A’BDOKA WABNO A’BDEKA WABNO AMATEKAL

I—the servant of you and the son of your servant and your bondwoman,

الْمُوَالِيْ لِوَلِيِّكَ الْمُعَادِيْ لِعَدُوِّكَ

MOWAALEE LE-WALIYYEKAL MO-A’ADEE LE-A’DUWWEKAS

who is loyal to those who are loyal to you and enemy of those who are your enemies—

اسْتَجَارَ بِمَشْهَدِكَ وَتَقَرَّبَ اِلَى اللّٰهِ بِقَصْدِكَ

TAJAARA BE-MASH-HADEKA WA TAQARRABA ELAL LAAHE BE-QASDEKA

am seeking the shelter of your shrine and seeking nearness to Allah through directing to you.

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ هَدَانِيْ لِوِلَايَتِكَ

AL-HAMDO LILLAAHIL LAZEE HADAANEE LE-WELAAYATEKA

All praise be to Allah Who guided me to be loyal to you,

وَخَصَّنِيْ بِزِيَارَتِكَ وَسَهَّلَ لِيْ قَصْدَكَ.

WA KHASSANEE BE-ZEYAARATEKA WA SAH-HALA LEE QASDAKA.

Who conferred upon me with my visiting you, and Who made easy for me to direct to you.

`You may then enter the shrine, stop next to the side of the Imam’s head, and say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ اٰدَمَ صِفْوَةِ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA AADAMA SIFWATIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Adam the chosen by Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ نُوْحٍ نَبِىِّ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA NOOHIN NABIYYIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Nooh the prophet of Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ اِبْرَاهِيْمَ خَلِيْلِ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA IBRAAHEEMA KHALEELIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Ibrahim the friend of Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ مُوْسىٰ كَلِيْمِ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA MOOSAA KALEEMIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Moosa the spoken by Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ عِيْسٰى رُوْحِ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA E’ESAA ROOHIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Isa the spirit of Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ مُحَمَّدٍ حَبِيْبِ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA MOHAMMADIN HABEEBIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Muhammad the most beloved by Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ اَمِيْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA AMEERIL MOMENEENA

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of the Commander of the Faithful (a.s.).

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَارِثَ فَاطِمَةَ الزَّهْرَآءِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA FAATEMATAZ ZAHRAAA-E

Peace be upon you, O inheritor of Fatemah (s.a.) the luminous.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ ۨ الْمُصْطَفٰى

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA MOHAMMADENIL MUSTAFAA

Peace be upon you, O son of Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) the well-chosen prophet.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ عَلِىٍّ ۨ الْمُرْتَضٰى

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA A’LIYYENIL MURTAZAA

Peace be upon you, O son of Ali (a.s.) the well-pleased.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ فَاطِمَةَ الزَّهْرَآءِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA FAATEMATAZ ZAHRAAA-E

Peace be upon you, O son of Fatemah (s.a.) the luminous.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ خَدِيْجَةَ الْكُبْرٰى

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA KHADEEJATAL KUBRAA

Peace be upon you, O son of Khadijah (s.a.) the grand lady.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ثَارَ اللهِ وَبْنَ ثَارِهٖ وَالْوِتْرَ الْمَوْتُوْرَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA SAARAL LAAHE WABNA SAAREHI WAL WITRAL MAWTOORA

Peace be upon you, O vengeance of Allah and son of His vengeance and the unavenged sanctity.

اَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ قَدْ اَقَمْتَ الصَّلٰوةَ

ASH-HADO ANNAKA QAD AQAMTAS SALAATA

I bear witness that you performed the prayers,

وَاٰتَيْتَ الزَّكٰوةَ وَاَمَرْتَ بِالْمَعْرُوْفِ

WA AATAYTAZ ZAKAATA WA AMARTA BIL MA’ROOFE

defrayed the poor-rates, enjoined the right,

وَنَهَيْتَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَاَطَعْتَ اللهَ حَتّٰى اَتٰكَ الْيَقِيْنُ

WA NAHAYTA A’NIL MUNKARE WA A-TA’TAL LAAHA HATTAA ATAAKAL YAQEENO

forbade the wrong and obeyed Allah until death came upon you.

فَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكَ وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً ظَلَمَتْكَ

FA-LA’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN QATALATKA WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN ZALAMATKA

May Allah curse the people who slew you. May Allah curse the people who wronged you.

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً سَمِعَتْ بِذٰلِكَ فَرَضِيَتْ بِهٖ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN SAME-A’T BE-ZAALEKA FARAZEYAT BEHI

May Allah curse the people who were informed about that but they approved it.

يَا مَوْلَاىَ يَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ اُشْهِدُ اللهَ وَمَلَآئِكَتَهٗ

YAA MAWLAAYA YAA ABA A’BDILLAAHE USH-HEDUL LAAHA WA MALAAA-EKATAHU

O my master! O Abu Abdillah! I call Allah, His angels,

وَاَنْبِيَآئَهٗ وَرُسُلَهٗ اَنِّىْ بِكُمْ مُّؤْمِنٌ

WA AMBEYAAA-AHU WA ROSOLAHU ANNEE BEKUM MOMENUN

His Prophets and His Messengers to witness that I believe in you

وَبِاِيَابِكُمْ مُّوْقِنٌ بِشَرَايِعِ دِيْنِىْ

WA BE-EYAABEKUM MOOQENUN BE-SHARAA-YE-E’ DEENEE

and in your return and I have faith in the laws of my religion

وَخَوَاتِيْمِ عَمَلِىْ وَمُنْقَلَبِىْ اِلٰى رَبِّىْ

WA KHAWAATEEME A’MALEE WA MUNQALABEE ELAA RABBEE

and in the sealing deeds of mine and in my final return to my Lord.

فَصَلَوَاتُ اللهِ عَلَيْكُمْ وَعَلٰى اَرْوَاحِكُمْ

FA-SALAWAATUL LAAHE A’LAYKUM WA A’LAA ARWAAHEKUM

Allah’s blessings be upon you all, upon your souls,

وَعَلٰى اَجْسَادِكُمْ وَعَلٰى شَاهِدِكُمْ

WA A’LAA AJSAADEKUM WA A’LAA SHA-HEDEKUM

upon your bodies, upon the present

وَعَلٰى غَآئِبِكُمْ وَظَاهِرِكُمْ وَبَاطِنِكُمْ

WA A’LAA GHAAA-EBEKUM WA ZAAHEREKUM WA BAATENEKUM

and the absent (of your group) and upon the manifest and the hidden (of your affairs).

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ خَاتَمِ النَّبِيِّيْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA KHAATAMIN NABIYYEENA

Peace be upon you, O son of the Seal of Prophets,

وَبْنَ سَيِّدِ الْوَصِيِّيْنَ وَبْنَ اِمَامِ الْمُتَّقِيْنَ

WAB NA SAYYEDIL WASIYYEENA WAB NA EMAAMIL MUTTAQEENA

son of the chief of the Prophets’ successors, son of the leader of the pious

وَبْنَ قَآئِدِ الْغُرِّ الْمُحَجَّلِيْنَ اِلٰى جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيْمِ

WAB NA QAAA-EDIL GHURRIL MOHAJJALEENA ELAA JANNAATIN NA-E’EME

and son of the white-forehead, white-marked ones, (guiding them) to the Gardens of Bliss.

وَكَيْفَ لَا تَكُوْنُ كَذٰلِكَ وَاَنْتَ بَابُ الْهُدٰى

WA KAYKA LAA TAKOONO KAZAALEKA WA ANTA BAABUL HODAA

How can that you be anything other than this while you are the door to the true guidance,

وَاِمَامُ التُّقٰى وَالْعُرْوَةُ الْوُثْقٰى

WA EMAAMUT TOQAA WAL-U’RWATUL WUSQAA

the guide to piety, the firmest handle,

وَالْحُجَّةُ عَلٰى اَهْلِ الدُّنْيَا وَخَامِسُ اَصْحَابِ الْكِسَآءِ

WAL-HUJJATO A’LAA AHLID DUNYAA WA KHAAMESO AHLE ASHAABIL KESAAA-E

the argument against the inhabitants of this world and the fifth of the People of the Cloak.

غَذَتْكَ يَدُ الرَّحْمَةِ وَرَضَعْتَ مِنْ ثَدْىِ الْاِيْمَانِ

GHA-ZATKA YADUR RAHMATE WA RAZA’TA MIN SAD-YIL EEMAANE

You were nourished by the hand of mercy, breast-fed by the bosom of faith

وَرُبِّيْتَ فِىْ حِجْرِ الْاِسْلَامِ

WA RUBBEETA FEE HIJRIL ISLAAME

and brought up in the lap of Islam.

فَالنَّفْسُ غَيْرُ رَاضِيَةٍ بِفِرَاقِكَ وَلَا شَآكَّةٍ فِىْ حَيٰوتِكَ

FAN-NAFSO GHAYRO RAAZEYATIN BE-FERAAQEKA WA LAA SHAAAK-KATIN FEE HAYAATEKA

So, my soul is definitely displeased by the way you left this world and it has no doubt that you are alive.

صَلَوَاتُ اللهِ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلٰى اٰبَآئِكَ وَاَبْنَائِكَ

SALAWAATUL LAAHE A’LAYKA WA A’LAA AABAAA-EKA WA ABNAA-EKA

Allah’s blessings be upon you, your ascendants and your descendants.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا صَرِيْعَ الْعَبْرَةِ السَّاكِبَةِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA SAREE-A’L A’BRATIS SAAKEBATE

Peace be upon you, O object of the pouring tears

وَقَرِيْنَ الْمُصِيْبَةِ الرَّاتِبَةِ

WA QAREENAL MOSEEBATIR RAATEBATE

and match of the astounding misfortune.

لَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً اسْتَحَلَّتْ مِنْكَ الْمَحَارِمَ

LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN NIS-TAHALLAT MINKAL MA-HAAREMA

May Allah curse the people who violated your sanctities and infringed the holiness of Islam.

فَقُتِلْتَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْكَ مَقْهُوْرًا

FA-QOTILTA SALLAL LAAHO A’LAYKA MAQHOORAN

So, you – may Allah’s blessings be upon you – were killed overwhelmed,

وَاَصْبَحَ رَسُوْلُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ بِكَ مَوْتُوْرًا

WA ASHBA-HA RASOOLUL LAAHE SALLAL LAAHO A’LAYHE WA AALEHI BEKA MAWTOORAN

the Messenger of Allah, Allah’s blessings be upon him and his Household, became cut off

وَاَصْبَحَ كِتَابُ اللهِ بِفَقْدِكَ مَهْجُوْرًا

WA ASBAHA KETAABUL LAAHE BE-FAQDEKA MAHJOORAN

because of loss of you and the Book of Allah became deserted due to losing you.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلٰى جَدِّكَ وَاَبِيْكَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA WA A’LAA JADDEKA WA ABEEKA

Peace be upon you, your grandfather, your father,

وَاُمِّكَ وَاَخِيْكَ وَعَلَى الْاَئِمَّةِ مِنْ بَۢنِيْكَ

WA UMMEKA WA AKHEEKA WA A’LAL A-IMMATE MIM BANEEKA

your mother, your brother, the Imams from your descendants,

وَعَلَى الْمُسْتَشْهَدِيْنَ مَعَكَ

WA A’LAL MUSTASH-HADEENA MA-A’KA

those who were martyred with you

وَعَلَى الْمَلَآئِكَةِ الْحَآفِّيْنَ بِقَبْرِكَ

WA A’LAL MALAAA-EKATIL HAAAF-FEENA BE-QABREKA

and the angels who are surrounding your tomb,

وَالشَّاهِدِيْنَ لِزُوَّارِكَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

WASH SHAAHEDEENA LE-ZUWWAAREKAL MOMENEENA

witnessing for your visitors and praying

بِالْقَبُوْلِ عَلٰى دُعَآءِ شِيْعَتِكَ

BIL-QABOOLE A’LAA DO-AAA-E SHEE-A’TEKA

for the acceptance of the prayers of your adherents.

وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهٗ.

WAS SALAAMO A’LAYKA WA RAHMATUL LAAHE WA BARAKAATOHU

Peace and Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you.

بِاَبِىْ اَنْتَ وَاُمِّىْ يَا بْنَ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ

BE-ABEE ANTA WA UMMEE YABNA RASOOLIL LAAHE

May my father and mother be ransoms for you, O son of Allah’s Messenger.

بِاَبِىْ اَنْتَ وَاُمِّىْ يَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

BE-ABEE ANTA WA UMMEE YAA ABAA A’BDIL LAAHE

May my father and mother be ransoms for you, O Abu-Abdillah.

لَقَدْ عَظُمَتِ الرَّزِيَّةُ وَجَلَّتِ الْمُصِيْبَةُ بِكَ عَلَيْنَا

LAQAD A’ZOMATIR RAZIYYATO WA JALLATIL MOSEEBATO BEKA A’LAYNAA

So unbearable is the misfortune and so horrendous is the calamity of you for us

وَعَلٰى جَمِيْعِ اَهْلِ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ

WA A’LAA JAMEE-E’ AHLIS SAMAAWAATE WAL ARZE

and for all the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth.

فَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً اَسْرَجَتْ وَاَلْجَمَتْ

FA-LA’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN ASRAJAT WA ALJAMAT

May Allah curse the people who put saddles and reins on their animals

وَتَهَيَّاَتْ لِقِتَالِكَ يَا مَوْلَاىَ يَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

WA TAHAYYA-AT LE-QETAALEKA YAA MAWLAAYA YAA ABAA A’BDIL LAAHE

and readied themselves for fighting against you. O my master! O Abu-Abdillah!

قَصَدْتُ حَرَمَكَ وَاَتَيْتُ مَشْهَدَكَ

QASADTO HARAMAKA WA ATAYTO MASH-HADAKA

I have directed to your sanctuary and I have come to your shrine

اَسْئَلُ اللهَ بِالشَّاْنِ الَّذِىْ لَكَ عِنْدَهٗ

AS-ALUL LAAHA BISH-SHAANIL LAZEE LAKA I’NDAHU

asking Almighty Allah in the name of the standing that you enjoy with Him

وَبِالْمَحَلِّ الَّذِىْ لَكَ لَدَيْهِ

BIL-MAHALLIL LAZEE LAKA LADAYHE

and in the name of the position that you occupy with him

اَنْ يُّصَلِّىَ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

AN-Y YOSALLEYA A’LAA MOHAMMADINW WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

to send blessings upon Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) and the Household of Muhammad (a.s.)

وَاَنْ يَّجْعَلَنِىْ مَعَكُمْ فِى الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَةِ

WA AN-Y YAJ-A’LANEE MA-A’KUM FID-DUNYAA WAL AAKHERATE

and to include me with your group in this world and in the Hereafter,

بِمَنِّهٖ وَجُوْدِهٖ وَكَرَمِهٖ.

BE-MANNEHI WA JOODEHI WA KARAMEHI.

out of His favor, magnanimity and generosity.

You may then kiss the tomb and offer a two-unit prayer in which you may recite any Surah you wish. Upon accomplishment, you may say the following supplicatory words:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ صَلَّيْتُ وَرَكَعْتُ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE SALLAYTO WA RA-KA’TO

O Allah, I have offered a prayer, genuflected

وَسَجَدْتُ لَكَ وَحْدَكَ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَكَ

WA SAJADTO LAKA WAHDAKA LAA SHAREEKA LAKA

and prostrated myself for Your sake purely without setting any partner with You,

لِاَنَّ الصَّلَاةَ وَالرُّكُوْعَ وَالسُّجُوْدَ

LE-ANNAS SALAATA WAR-ROKOO-A’ WAS SOJOODA

since all prayers, genuflections and prostrations

لَا تَكُوْنُ اِلَّا لَكَ لِاَنَّكَ اَنْتَ اللهُ

LAA TAKOONO ILLAA LAKA LE-ANNAKA ANTAL LAAHO

suit none except You. Because You are Allah;

لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAA ANTA

there in no god save You.

اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ALLAAHUMMA SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADINW WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

O Allah, (please) send blessings upon Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) and the Household of Muhammad (a.s.),

وَاَبْلِغْهُمْ عَنِّىْ اَفْضَلَ الْتَّحِيَّةِ وَالسَّلَامِ

WA ABLIGH-HUM A’NNEE AFZALAT TAHIYYATE WAS SALAAME

convey to them my best greetings and compliments

وَارْدُدْ عَلَىَّ مِنْهُمُ التَّحِيَّةَ وَالسَّلَامَ

WAR DUD A’LAYYA MINHOMUT TAHIYYATA WAS SALAAMA A

and convey to me their replies to my greetings and compliments.

اَللّٰهُمَّ وَهَاتَانِ الرَّكْعَتَانِ هَدِيَّةٌ مِّنِّىْ

LLAAHUMMA WA HAATAANIR RAK-A’TAANE HADIYYATUM MINNEE

O Allah, these two units of prayer are present from me

اِلٰى مَوْلَاىَ وَسَيِّدِىْ وَاِمَامِىْ

ELAA MAWLAAYA WA SAYYEDEE WA EMAAMEE

to my master, chief and leader,

حُسَيْنِ بْنِ عَلِىٍّ عَلَيْهِمَا السَّلَامُ

HUSAYN IBNE A’LIYYIN A’LAYHEMAS SALAAMO

Husain the son of Ali, peace be upon both of them.

اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ALLAAHUMMA SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADINW WA AALE MOHAMMADINW

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) and the Household of Muhammad (a.s.)

وَّتَقَبَّلْ ذٰلِكَ مِنِّىْ وَاجْزِنِىْ عَلٰى ذٰلِكَ

WA TAQABBAL ZAALEKA MINNEE WAJ ZENEE A’LAA ZAALEKA

and accept that from me and reward me for it

اَفْضَلَ اَمَلِىْ وَرَجَآئِىْ فِيْكَ وَفِىْ وَلِيِّكَ

AFZALA AMALEE WA RAJAAA-EE FEEKA WA FEE WALIYYEKA

in the best rewarding that I anticipate and hope from You and from Your saint.

يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ.

YAA ARHAMAR RAAHEMEEN.

O most merciful of all those who show mercy!

You may then turn to the side of the Imam’s feet and visit Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) whose head is at the side of Imam al-Husayn (a.s.)’s feet, and say these words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAB NA RASOOLIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O son of Allah’s Messenger.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ نَبِىِّ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAB NA NABIYYIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O son of Allah’s Prophet.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ اَمِيْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA AMEERIL MOMENEENA

Peace be upon you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ الْحُسِيْنِ الشَّهِيْدِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAB NAL HUSAYNISH SHAHEEDE

Peace be upon you, O son of al-Husain (a.s.) the martyr.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ اَيُّهَا الشَّهِيْدُ ابْنُ الشَّهِيْدِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA AYYOHASH SHAHEED UBNUSH SHAHEEDE

Peace be upon you, O martyr and son of the martyr.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ اَيُّهَا الْمَظْلُوْمُ ابْنُ الْمَظْلُوْمِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA AYYOHAL MAZLOOM UBNUL MAZLOOME

Peace be upon you, O persecuted and son of the persecuted.

لَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكَ وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً ظَلَمَتْكَ

LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN QATALATKA WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN ZALAMATKA

May Allah curse the people who slew you. May Allah curse the people who wronged you.

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً سَمِعَتْ بِذٰلِكَ فَرَضِيَتْ بِهٖ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN SAME-A’T BE-ZAALEKA FA-RAZEYAT BEHI

May Allah curse the people who were informed of that and they approved it.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا مَوْلَاىَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA MAWLAAYA

Peace be upon you, O my master.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِىَّ اللهِ وَبْنَ وَلِيِّهٖ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WALIYYAL LAAHE WAB NA WALIYYEHI

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s friend and son of His friend.

لَقَدْ عَظُمَتِ الْمُصِيْبَةُ

LAQAD A’ZOMATIL MOSEEBATO

Unbearable is the misfortune

وَجَلَّتِ الرَّزِيَّةُ بِكَ عَلَيْنَا

WA JALLATIR RAZIYYATO BEKA A’LAYNAA

and so horrendous is the calamity of you for us

وَعَلٰى جَمِيْعِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

WA A’LAA JAMEE-I’L MOMENEENA

and for all faithful believers.

فَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكَ

FA-LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN QATALATKA

May Allah curse the people who slew you.

وَاَبْرَءُ اِلَى اللهِ وَاِلَيْكَ مِنْهُمْ

WA ABRA-O ELAL LAAHE WA ELAYKA MINHUM

I release myself in the presence of Allah and you from these people

فِى الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَةِ.

FID DUNYAA WAL AAKHERATE.

in this world and in the Hereafter.

You may then turn your face to the martyrs and visit them with the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا اَوْلِيَآءَ اللهِ وَاَحِبَّآئَهٗ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKUM YAA AWLEYAAA-AL LAAHE WA AHIBBAAA-AHU

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s friends and beloved by him.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا اَصْفِيَآءَ اللهِ وَاَوِدَّآئَهٗ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKUM YAA ASFEYAAA ALLAAHE WA AWIDDAAA-AHU

Peace be upon you, O choices of Allah and His favorites.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا اَنْصَارَ دِيْنِ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKUM YAA ANSAARA DEENIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O supporters of Allah’s Religion,

وَاَنْصَارَ نَبِيِّهٖ وَاَنْصَارَ اَمِيْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

WA ANSAARA NABIYYEHI WA ANSAARA AMEERIL MOMENEENA

supporters of His Prophet, supporters of the Commander of the Faithful

وَاَنْصَارَ فَاطِمَةَ سَيِّدَةِ نِسَآءِ الْعَالَمِيْنَ

WA ANSAARA FAATEMATA SAYYEDATE NESAAA-IL A’ALAMEENA

and supporters of Fatemah the doyenne of the women of the world.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا اَنْصَارَ اَبِىْ مُحَمَّدٍۨ الْحَسَنِ الْوَلِىِّ النَّاصِحِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKUM YAA ANSAARA ABEE MOHAMMADENIL HASANIL WALIYYIN NAASEHE

Peace be upon you, O supporters of Abu-Muhammad al-Hasan the sincere saint.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا اَنْصَارَ اَبِىْ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحُسَيْنِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKUM YAA ANSAARA ABEE A’BDIL LAAHIL HUSAYNISH

Peace be upon you, O supporters of Abu-Abdullah al-Husain

الشَّهِيْدِ الْمَظْلُوْمِ صَلَوَاتُ اللهِ عَلَيْهِمْ اَجْمَعِيْنَ

SHAHEEDIL MAZLOOME SALAWAATUL LAAHE A’LAYHIM AJMA-E’ENA

the wronged martyr. Blessings of Allah be upon them all.

بِاَبِىْ اَنْتُمْ وَاُمِّىْ طِبْتُمْ وَطَابَتِ الْاَرْضُ الَّتِىْ فِيْهَا دُفِنْتُمْ

BE-ABEE ANTUM WA UMMEE TIBTUM WA TAABATIL ARZUL LATEE FEEHAA DOFINTUM

May my father and mother be your ransoms. Pure are you and pure is the soil in which you were buried.

وَفُزْتُمْ وَاللهِ فَوْزًا عَظِيْمًا يَا لَيْتَنِىْ كُنْتُ مَعَكُمْ

WA FUZTUM WAL LAAHE FAWZAN A’ZEEMAN YAA LAYTANEE KUNTO MA-A’KUM

And, by Allah, great is your triumph. I wish I were with you

فَاَفُوْزَ مَعَكُمْ فِىْ الْجِنَانِ مَعَ الشُّهَدَآءِ وَالصَّالِحِيْنَ

FA-A-FOOZA MA-A’KUM FIL JENAANE MA-A’SH SHOHA-DAAA-E WAS-SAALEHEENA

so that I would have won with you in the gardens of Paradise with the martyrs and the righteous.

وَحَسُنَ اُوْلٰٓئِكَ رَفِيْقًا وَالسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهٗ.

WA HASONA OOLAAA-EKA RAFEEQAN WAS SALAAMO A’LAYKUM WA RAHMATUL LAAHE WA BARAKAATOHU.

Excellent is the companionship of these. Peace and Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you all.

You may then return to the side of Imam al-Husayn’s head and pray as frequently as possible for yourself, your family members, and your brethren-in-faith.

Sayyid Ibn Tawus and al-Shahid added the following:

You may then walk to the shrine of al-’Abbas, may Allah be pleased with him. When you reach there, you may stop at the tomb and say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا اَبَا الْفَضْلِ الْعَبَّاسَ بْنَ اَمِيْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA ABAL FAZLIL A’BBAAS ABNA AMEERIL MOMENEENA

Peace be upon you, O Abul Fazl al-Abbas son of the Commander of the Faithful.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ سَيِّدِ الْوَصِيِّيْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA SAYYEDIL WASIYYEENA

Peace be upon you, O son of the chief of the Prophets’ successors.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ اَوَّلِ الْقَوْمِ اِسْلَامًا

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA AWWALIL QAWME ISLAAMAN

Peace be upon you, O son of the foremost in accepting Islam,

وَاَقْدَمِهِمْ اِيْمَانًا وَاَقْوَمِهِمْ بِدِيْنِ اللهِ

WA AQDAMEHIM EEMAANAN WA AQWAMEHIM BE-DEENIL LAAHE

the leading in having faith in it, the most perfect in carrying out the laws of Allah’s religion

وَاَحْوَطِهِمْ عَلَى الْاِسْلَامِ

WA AHWATEHIM A’LAL ISLAAME

and the most careful for Islam.

اَشْهَدُ لَقَدْ نَصَحْتَ لِلّٰهِ وَلِرَسُوْلِهٖ وَلِاَخِيْكَ فَنِعْمَ الْاَخُ الْمُوَاسِىْ

ASH-HADO LAQAD NASAH-TA LILLAAHE WA LE-RASOOLEHI WA LE-AKHEEKA FA-NE’MAL AKHUL MOWAASEE

I bear witness that you have acted sincerely for the sake of Allah, His Messenger and your brother. So, how excellent sacrificing brother you are!

فَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً قَتَلَتْكَ وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً ظَلَمَتْكَ

FA-LA-A’-NAL LAAHO UMMATAN QATALATKA WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN ZALAMATKA

May Allah curse the people who slew you. May Allah curse the people who wronged you.

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّةً اِسْتَحَلَّتْ مِنْكَ الْمَحَارِمَ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATANIS TAHALLAT MINKAL MAHAAREMA

May Allah curse the people who violated your sanctities

وَانْتَهَكَتْ فِىْ قَتْلِكَ حُرْمَةَ الْاِسْلَامِ

WAN TAHAKAT FEE QATLEKA HURMATAL ISLAAME

and infringed the holiness of Islam when they killed you.

فَنِعْمَ الْاَخُ الصَّابِرُ الْمُجَاهِدُ الْمُحَامِى النَّاصِرُ

FA-NE’MAL AKHUS SAABERUL MOJAAHEDUL MOHAAMIN NAASERO

Most excellent steadfast, striver brother, defender, supporter,

وَالْاَخُ الدَّافِعُ عَنْ اَخِيْهِ الْمُجِيْبُ اِلٰى طَاعَةِ رَبِّهِ

WAL AKHUD DAA-FE-O’ A’N AKHEEHIL MOJEEBO ELAA TAA-A’TE RABBEHIR

one who stood up for his brother, one who responded to the obedience to his Lord

الرَّاغِبُ فِيْمَا زَهِدَ فِيْهِ غَيْرُهٗ مِنَ الثَّوَابِ الْجَزِيْلِ

RAAGHEBO FEEMAA ZAHEDA FEEHE GHAYROHU MENAS SAWAABIL JAZEELE

and one who desired for what others deemed unworthy; namely, the abundant reward

وَالثَّنَآءِ الْجَمِيْلِ وَاَلْحَقَكَ اللهُ بِدَرَجَةِ اٰبَآئِكَ

WAS-SANAAA-IL JAMEELE WA AL-HAQAKAL LAAHO BE-DARAJATE AABAAA-EKA

and the excellent praise you are. May Allah attach you to the rank of your ancestors

فِىْ دَارِ النَّعِيْمِ اِنَّهٗ حَمِيْدٌ مَّجَيْدٌ.

FEE DAARIN NA-E’EME INNAHU HAMEEDUM MAJEEDUN.

in the Abode of Bliss, indeed, He is Praiseworthy, Glorious.

You may then throw yourself on the tomb and say the following words:

اَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ تَعَرَّضْتُ ولِزِيَارَةِ اَوْلِيَآئِكَ

ALLAAHUMMA LAKA TA-A’RRAZTO WA LE-ZEYAARATE AWLE-YAAA-EKA

“O Allah! To You I present myself, and for the visitation of Your friends (beloved ones)

قَصَدْتُ رَغْبَةً فِىْ ثَوَابِكَ وَرَجَآءً لِمَغْفِرَتِكَ

QASAD-TO RAGHBATAN FEE SAWAABEKA WA RAJAAA-AN LE-MAGHFERATEKA

I have set out — seeking Your reward, hoping for Your forgiveness

وَجَزِيْلِ اِحْسَانِكَ

WA JAZEELE EHSAANEKA

and Your abundant kindness.

فَاَسْاَلُكَ اَنْ تُصَلِّىَ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

FA-AS-ALOKA AN TOSALLEYA A’LAA MOHAMMADINW WA AALE MOHAMMADINW

So I ask You to send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad,

وَّاَنْ تَجْعَلَ رِزْقِى بِهِمْ دَارًّا

WA AN TAJ-A’LA RIZQEE BEHIM DAARRANW

and to make my sustenance through them abundant,

وَّعَيْشِىْ بِهِمْ قَارًّا وَّزِيَارَتِىْ بِهِمْ مَقْبُوْلَةً

WA A’YSHEE BEHIM QAARRANW WA ZEYAARATEE BEHIM MAQBOOLATANW

my life through them stable, my visitation through them accepted,

وَّذَنْۢبِىْ بِهِمْ مَغْفُوْرًا وَاقْلِبْنِىْ بِهِمْ مُفْلِحًا مُنْجِحًا

WA ZAMBEE BEHIM MAGHFOORATAN WAQ LIBNEE BEHIM MUFLEHAN MUNJEHAN

and my sins through them forgiven. And turn me back, by their means, successful,

مُسْتَجَابًا دُعآئِىْ بِاَفْضَلِ مَا يَنْقَلِبُ بِهٖ اَحَدٌ مِّنْ زُوَّارِهٖ

MUSTAJAABAN DO-A’AA-EE BE-AFZALE MAA YANQALEBO BEHI AHADUM MIN ZUWWAAREHI

prosperous, and with my supplication answered — with the best outcome that any of their visitors

وَالْقَاصِدِيْنَ اِلَيْهِ بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ.

WAL QAASEDEENA ELAYHE BE-RAHMATEKA YAA ARHAMAR RAAHEMEEN.

and those who come to them return with — by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

You may then kiss the tomb and offer there the prayer of ziyarah as well as any other prayer you wish to offer. When you intend to bid farewell to him, you may say the words that have been previously cited at bidding farewell.
