Merits

Jawshan means “chain armour”, worn to protect the body against weapons.

In one of the early wars the Almighty Allah sent the text of this dua to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) from that day he discarded the armour and used to recite this dua in every battlefield.

Kafa’mee has mentioned this dua in his books “Balaadul Ameen” and “Misbah”, on the authority of Imam Ali bin Husain Al Zaynul A’abideen (a.s.) who learned it from his father, Imam Husain (a.s.), the grandson of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.).

It is a many-sided all-purpose dua. For and on behalf of him who recites Jawshan Kabeer in the beginning of the Holy month of Ramazan, an army of seventy thousand Angels sing praises of the Almighty Allah, earning (for him) due recompense and reward.

If recited 3 times during the Holy month of Ramazan (particularly on “Shab-e-Qadr” nights) fire of Hell will refuse to burn the reciter and as a result the gates of paradise will be thrown open for him, because as soon as it is recited Almighty Allah takes him under his protection and keeps him safe from the onslaught of sinful temptations.

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) advised Imam Ali (a.s.), Bibi Faatemah (s.a.), Imam Hasan (a.s.), and Imam Husain (a.s.) to learn it by heart and recite again and again because it contains “Ism-e-A’azam” (the Great name of Allah), and make sure to tell people to write this dua on the cloth of shroud before a dead faithful person is buried as it is the best defence against all types of punishments and penalties; above all the fire of Hell will not dare to touch him.

At the time of war it is the most reliable defence for the faithfuls.

Recite it before going on a journey to come back safe and successful.

Text and Translation

If written text is kept in the house it is a safe insurance against fire, theft, loot and arson.

If written text is kept on person as Taweez it drives away misfortunes, keeps clear of accidents and brings prosperity.

This dua, in addition to the Holy month of Ramazan, should be recited on Fridays.

Recite this dua once a month or at any time during a year if you are a “very busy person”, and even if that is not possible for reasons beyond your control, recite it at least once in your lifetime.

In all there are 100 sections in this Dua; and, in each section, 10 names or attributes of Almighty Allah are mentioned, except section 55, in which 11 attributes are recited.

At the end of each section recite the following:

سُبْحَانَكَ يَا لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ

SUBHAANAKA YAA LAA ELAAHA ILLAA ANTAL

Glory be to You, O “there is no god save You”,

الْغَوْثَ الْغَوْثَ خَلِصَّنَا مِنَ النَّارِ يَا رَبْ.

GAUSAL GAUS KHALLISNAA MENAN NAARE YAA RAB.
