Ziyarat Ashura

Text and Translation

(a) Allah will record a million good deeds for you, erase a million sins and add a hundred million ranks to your rank.

(b) You will be included among those people who were martyred along with Imam Husain (a.s.) and you will share their ranks.

(c) On the day of Judgment, you will be included among the martyrs

(d) You will get the reward of all the Prophets, Messengers and all the people who have visited the grave of Imam Husain (a.s.) from the day that he (a.s.) was martyred till date.

And the way of reciting the Ziyaarat is like this…’

(Then Imam (a.s.) recited the entire Ziyaarat-e-Ashura for Alqamah (r.a.))

At the end of this tradition, Imam Baqir (a.s.) says:

‘O Alqamah, if you can, then recite this Ziyaarat every day send salutations to Imam Husain (a.s.). You will get all the rewards (of the one who recites it on the day of Ashoora).’

Tradition 2

Imam Sadiq (a.s.) informs,

‘The one who does the Ziyaarat of Imam Husain (a.s.) on the day of Ashoora, then paradise is obligatory upon him.’

Ziyarat-e-Ashoora: Hadees-e-Qudsi

The greatest merit for this Ziyaarat is that it is the ‘Word of Allah’ (Hadees-e-Qudsi). Safwan (r.a.) narrates that Hazrat Jibraeel (a.s.) conveyed this Ziyaarat to Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) on divine command and it has reached Imam Baqir (a.s.) through his noble ancestors.

Ziyaarat-e-Ashoora: Emphasis of Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.)

The emperor of the era, the chief of the universe, Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) has stressed the importance of reciting Ziyarat-e-Ashoora.

Shaykh Mohaddis Noori (r.a.) in his book “Najmus Saqib” writes that there was a person called Syed Ahmed Rashty who was on his way to Hajj with his companions.

It was winter and one night there was snow and ice accompanied by strong winds.

Syed Ahmed got separated from his companions.

He says he was trembling with fear and cold as it was a place where people often looted. Suddenly he saw a person with a shovel freeing the tree branches which were burdened with snow. The man greeted Syed Ahmed saying “Assalamu Alaykum Syed Ahmed! Where are you going?” Amazed at the person knowing his name he said he was on his way to Hajj but had lost his way. The man told him “Alayka bin Nafela! Nafela! Nafela!” Syed Ahmed prayed his Maghrib and Isha salaah finishing each with its Nafela. He saw the man again who asked him, “Have you not gone yet?” Syed Ahmed replied “No!” The man said, “Alayka bil Jaameah! Jaameah! Jaameah!”

Syed Ahmed says that I did not know [Ziyarat-e-Jameah](G13) by heart but that day I could recite it as though I had memorised it. The man told him, “Alayka bil Ashoora! Ashoora! Ashoora!”

Syed Ahmed recited Ziyaarat-e-Ashoora and [Dua Alqamah](E8). The man then mounted on his horse and took him to his caravan and the companions he had been separated from.

As he parted Imam (a.t.f.s.) said to Syed Ahmed, “REMEMBER ZIYAARAT-E-ASHOORA, THERE IS NO GREATER GIFT THAN IT.”

We see how Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) helped Syed Ahmed and stressed upon the recitation of Ziyaarat-e-Ashoora. It also points to the fact that Imam-e-Zamana (a.t.f.s.) desires that his followers should always remember the tribulations of his grandfather Imam Husain (a.s.) and they should always be aggrieved and anguished by the events of Karbala.

Safwan's Discourse on the Merit of Ziyaarat of Ashoora

Sayf ibn Umayrah has reported that he said to Safwan, “Alqamah ibn Muhammad has not reported this supplication to us from Imam al-Baqir (a.s.). He has only reported the ziyarah form.”

Answering him, Safwan said:

I once accompanied my master al-Sadiq, Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, to this very place. He did as same as we have just done as regarding the method of ziyarah and then, after offering a prayer similar to the one we have just offered and bidding the visited Imam farewell as same as we have done, he said this very supplication.

Safwan added, Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said to me, “Observe this form of ziyarah and this supplication and use them whenever you visit (the Imam). Surely, I guarantee on behalf of Almighty Allah for any one who says this form of ziyarah and this supplication while visiting the holy tomb or being at a distant place that his visit will be accepted, his efforts will be praiseworthy, his greetings will reach the Imams and will never be screened from them, all his requests will be granted by Almighty Allah whatever they will be, and he will never be disappointed. O Safwan, the Imam (a.s.) added, I have received this very guarantee for those who use this form of ziyarah when visiting the holy tombs from my father who received it from his father Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.) who received it from his father al-Husayn (a.s.) who received it from his brother al-Hasan (a.s.) who received it from his father the Commander of the Faithful who received it from the Messenger of Allah who received it from Archangel Jibraeel who received it from Almighty Allah, Who undertook for any one who would visit Imam al-Husayn (‘a) with this form of ziyarah and say this very supplication from the holy shrine or from a distant place that He (i.e. Almighty Allah) Himself should accept his visitation, grant him his requests whatever they would be, and respond to his prayers. Moreover, the visitor should never leave with disappointment; rather, Almighty Allah should make him leave with pleasure and delight of his eye due to settling of his needs, winning Paradise, being manumitted from Hellfire, and being granted the right to intercede for whomever he wishes except those who openly incur the animosity of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.). Almighty Allah, as was maintained by Archangel Gabriel, undertook this pledge and called the angels to witness for it after the angels of His Kingdom had witnessed the same. O Allah’s Messenger, Archangel Gabriel added, Almighty Allah has sent me to carry this pleasant and good tidings to you as well as to Ali, Fatimah, al-Hasan, al-Husayn, the Imams from your descendants, and your adherents (i.e. Shi'ah) up to the Resurrection Day. Up to the Resurrection Day, you as well as ‘Ali, Fatimah, al-Hasan, al-Husayn, and your adherents shall be pleased.

Safwan added, Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) then said to me: O Safwan, whenever you have an impenetrable problem that cannot be solved except by Almighty Allah, you must then visit (Imam al-Husayn) with this form of ziyarah, wherever you would be, and follow it with this supplication. You may then beseech your Lord to grant you your request and the response shall soon come from Almighty Allah Who never fails in His promise to His Messenger; out of His magnanimity and favoring. All praise be then to Allah.

More Confirmations

In the book of al-Najm al-Saaqib (by al-Nuri), the story of the attendance of Hajj Sayyid Ahmad al-Rashti in the presence of the Imam of the Age, may our souls be accepted as ransoms from him, during his journey of the hajj pilgrimage, has been told in details. In one of the details of this story, which will be cited in this book after the Major Comprehensive Form of ziyaarah (al-Ziyaarah al-Jaamea;h al-Kabeerah), the Imam (a.s.) said to al-Rashti with confirmation, “Why do you not (frequently) recite the ziyarah of ‘Ashoora’, ‘Ashoora’, ‘Ashoora’, ‘Ashoora’...?”

Commenting on this, our trustworthy mentor Shaykh al-Nuri said:

One of the unparalleled merits and points of honor of ziyarah of ‘Ashura’ is that its form is not similar to the other ordinary forms of ziyarah, which have been composed and dictated by the Holy Infallibles apparently, although nothing is issued from the immaculate hearts of these Holy Infallibles except statements proving that they have received these words from the Most High Origin. The ziyarah of ‘Ashura’, however, is similar to the Words of Almighty Allah that He revealed to Archangel Jibraeel. This fact can be noticed in the words of this form of ziyarah, including the statements of invoking curses (on the enemies), the statements of invoking blessings (on the Imam and his companions), and the supplicatory statements. Hence, Archangel Jibraeel conveyed these words to the Seal of the Prophets. As maintained by tangible experiences, this form of ziyarah is unique in achieving the requests, gaining the needs, and warding off the enemies if a visitor recites it continuously for forty days or even less. However, the most astonishing effect of preserving in reciting this form of ziyarah can be touched in the following story, mentioned in the book of Dar al-Salam. However, I will mention it in brief:

Hasan al-Yazdi the trustworthy, righteous, and pious Hajj and Mawla who lived in the vicinity of the holy shrine in al-Ghari (i.e. al-Najaf) and who was one of those who acted faithfully as regards neighboring this holy place and practiced acts of worship painstakingly, has reported the following incident from Muhammad ‘Ali al-Yazdi the trustworthy and honest Hajj:

In Yazd, there was a righteous and virtuous man who used to preoccupy himself (with acts of worship) and make preparations for his next life in his grave. He used to spend nights in a graveyard in the skirts of the city of Yazd, known as Mazar, in which a group of righteous people were buried. He had a neighbor who grew up with him since infanthood and both joined the same school and studied under the same mentor. Nevertheless, this neighbor became a tither (i.e. he seizes tenth of the people’s gains by means of power and injustice). He did not quit this process until he died. He was then buried in that graveyard in a grave near the place where the righteous man used to stay overnight.

In less than one month after the death of this tither, his righteous neighbor saw him in sleep in a good-looking costume as if he was enjoying the brightness of bliss. The righteous man approached the dead man and asked him, “I know very well your origin and your end, and your open appearance and your hidden manners. You were not one of those whom are expected to have righteous inner self and your deeds would bring you nothing but torment and chastisement. How could you attain this status?”

The dead replied, “What you have just said is exactly the truth. I had been placed in the most terrible torture since my death up to yesterday when the wife of Ashraf, the blacksmith, died and was buried in this place.” The dead pointed to a definite side, which was about one hundred arms away from his burial place. He then went on, “At the night of her burial, Abu-’Abdullah (Imam al-Husayn) visited her three times. In the third time, he ordered torture to be stopped from all the dead inhabitants of this graveyard. Since then, I was turned into bliss, luxury, comfort, and coziness.”

When the righteous man woke up, he was deeply perplexed. He therefore went to the market of the blacksmiths to ask about the man whose wife had recently died, because he had no familiarity with that man. When he found the blacksmith, he asked him, “Did you have a wife?” The blacksmith answered, “Yes, I had. She died recently and she was buried in such-and-such place.” The man mentioned the very place to which the dead tither pointed in the dream of the righteous man. “Had she ever visited the tomb of Abu-’Abdullah?” the righteous man asked. “No, she had not,” answered her widower. “Did she usually mention the misfortunes that the Imam (a.s.) had to encounter?” asked the righteous man. “No, she did not,” answered her widower. “Was she usually holding consolation ceremonies for Imam al-Husayn (a.s.)?” asked the righteous man. “No, she was not,” answered her widower, who added, “What for are you putting such questions?” Here, the righteous man narrated the whole story of his dream. The widower then said, “Yes, she used to recite ziyarah of ‘Ashura’ very frequently.”

We pray to Allah – the Almighty – that He includes us among the fortunate ones – those who have the taufeeq of reciting Ziyaarat-e-Ashoora regularly.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اﷲ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA ABAA A’BDIL LAAHE

Peace be on you, O Abu Abdillah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا ابْنَ رَسُوْلِ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A’ALAYKA YABNA RASOOLIL LAAHE

Peace be on you, O son of the Messenger of Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ اَمِیْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA AMEERIL MOMENEENA

Peace be on you, O son of the Commander of the Faithful

وَابْنَ سَیِّدِ الْوَصِیِّیْنَ

WABNA SAYYEDIL WASIYYEENA

and the son of the chief of the successors.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ فَاطِمَۃَ سَیِّدَۃِ نِسَآءِ الْعَالَمِیْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA FAATEMAATA SAYYEDATE NESAAAIL A’ALAMEENA

Peace be on you, O son of Fatima, the chief of the women of the worlds.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا خِیَرَۃَ اللهِ وَابْنَ خِیَرَتِهٖ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA KHEYARATAL LAAHE WABNA KHEYARATEHI

Salutation on you O the good creation of Allah and the son of His best creation!

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا ثَارَ اللهِ وَابْنَ ثاَرِهٖ وَالْوِتْرَ الْمَوْتُوْرَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA SAARAL LAAHE WABNA SAAREHI WAL WITRAL MAWTOORA

Peace be on you, O fearless warrior of Allah, the son of His fearless warrior, the one who was alone, and wronged by the murder of relatives.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ وَعَلَی الْأَرْوَاحِ الَّتِیْ حَلَّتْ بِفِنَآئِكَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA WA A’LAL ARWAAHIL LATEE HALLAT BE FENAA-EKA

Peace be on you, and on the souls who died with you.

عَلَیْكُمْ مِنِّی جَمِیْعًا سَلَامُ اللهِ اَبَدًا

A’LAYKUM MINNEE JAMEE-A’N SALAAMUL LAAHE ABADAM

I send peace of AIlah on all of you forever,

مَا بَقِیْتُ وَبَقِیَ اللَّیْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

MAA BAQEETO WA BAQEYAL LAYLO WAN NAHAARO

so long as I remain alive, and the night and day remains.

یَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

YAA ABAA A’BDIL LAAHE

O Abu Abdillah,

لَقَدْ عَظُمَتِ الرَّزِیَّۃُ وَجَلَّتْ

LAQAD A’ZOMATIR RAZIYYATO WA JALLAT

great is the loss, and unbearable

وَعَظُمَتِ الْمُصِیْبَۃُ بِكَ عَلَیْنَا

WA A’ZOMATIL MOSEEBATO BEKA A’LAYNAA

and great is your tragedy for us,

وَعَلی جَمِیْعِ اَهْلِ اْلاِسْلَامِ

WA A’LAA JAMEE-E’ AHLIL ISLAAME

and for all the people of Islam,

وَجَلَّتْ وَعَظُمَتْ مُصِیْبَتُكَ فِیْ السَّموَاتِ عَلی جَمِیْعِ اَهْلِ السَّمَاوَاتِ

WA JALLAT WA A’ZOMAT MOSEEBATOKA FIS SAMAAWAATE A’LAA JAMEE-E’ AHLIS SAMAAWAATE

and unbearable and great is your tragedy in the heavens, and for all the dwellers of the heavens.

فَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّۃً اَسَّسَتْ اَسَاسَ الظُّلْمِ وَالْجَوْرِ عَلَیْكُمْ اَهْلَ الْبَیْتِ

FA-LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN ASSASAT ASAASAZ ZULME WAL JAWRE A’LAYKUM AHLAL BAYTE

May Allah curse the people who laid the basis of oppression, and the wrongs done against you, people of the House

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّۃً دَفَعَتْكُمْ عَنْ مَقَامِكُمْ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN DAFA-A’TKUM A’N MOQAAMEKUM

May Allah curse who tried to obscure and deny your office and status,

وَاَزَالَتْكُمْ عَنْ مَرَاتِبِكُمُ الَّتِیْ رَتَّبَكُمُ اللهُ فِیْهَا

WA AZAALATKUM A’N MARAATEBOKOMUL LATEE RATTABAKOMUL LAAHO FEEHAA

willfully neglected your rank and class Allah had made known in clear terms.

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّۃً قَتَلَتْكُمْ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN QATALATKUM

May Allah curse the people who killed you,

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ الْمُمَهِّدِیْنَ لَهُمْ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHUL MOMAH-HEDEENA LAHUM

and those who made it easy for them,

بِالتَّمْكِیْنِ مِنْ قِتَالِكُمْ

BIT-TAMKEENE MIN QETAALEKUM

by preparing the grounds for your killing.

بَرِئْتُ اِلَی اللهِ وَاِلَیْكُمْ مِنْهُمْ

BAREA-TO ELAL LAAHE WA ELAYKUM MINHUM

I turn to you and Allah, away from them,

وَمِنْ اَشْیَاعِهِمْ وَاَتْبَاعِهِمْ وَاَوْلِیَآئِهِمْ

WA MIN ASHYAA-E’HIM WA ATBAA-E’HIM WA AWLEYAAEHIM

and their adherents, their followers, and their friends.

یَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

YAA ABAA A’BDIL LAAHE

O Abu Abdillah,

اِنِّیْ سِلْمٌ لِمَنْ سَالَمَكُمْ

INNEE SILMUN LEMAN SAALAMAKUM

I am at peace with those who make peace with you,

وَحَرْبٌ لِمَنْ حَارَبَكُمْ اِلی یَوْمِ الْقِیَامَۃِ

WA HARBUN LEMAN HAARABAKUM ELAA YAWMIL QEYAAMATE

And I am at war with those who make war with you, till the Day of Judgement.

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ آلَ زِیَادٍ وَآلَ مَرْوَانَ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO AALA ZEYAADIN WA AALA MARWAANA

And may Allah cruse the family of Ziyaad and the family of Marwaan;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ بَنِیْ اُمَیَّۃَ قَاطِبَۃً

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO BANEE UMAYYATA QAATEBATAN

And may Allah curse the group and the tribe of Umiyyah, one and all, altogether;

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ ابْنَ مَرْجَانَۃَ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHUBNA MARJAANATA

And may Allah cruse Ibne Marjanah

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ عُمَرَبْنَ سَعْدٍ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO O’MARABNA SAA’DIN

And may Allah curse Umar ibne Sa`ad,

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ شِمْرًا

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO SHIMRAN

and may Allah curse Shimr

وَلَعَنَ اللهُ اُمَّۃً اَسْرَجَتْ

WA LA-A’NAL LAAHO UMMATAN ASRAJAT

And may Allah curse the nation that saddled up,

وَاَلْجَمَتْ وَتَنَقَّبَتْ لِقِتَالِكَ

WA ALJAMAT WA TANAQQABAT LE-QETAALEKA

reined in, and veiled themselves for the fight against you.

بِاَبِیْ اَنْتَ وَاُمِّی لَقَدْ عَظُمَ مُصَابِیْ بِكَ

BE-ABEE ANTA WA UMMEE LAQAD A’ZOMA MOSAABEE BEKA

My father and mother be sacrificed for you, great is my sorrow for you.

فَاَسْئَلُ اللهَ الَّذِیْ اَكْرَمَ مَقَامَكَ

FA-ASALUL LAAHAL LAZEE AKRAMA MAQAAMAKA

I pray to Allah who has honoured your status,

وَاَكْرَمَنِیْ بِكَ اَنْ یَرْزُقَنِیْ طَلَبَ ثَارِكَ

WA AKRAMANEE BEKA AYN YARZOQANEE TALABA SAAREKA

and honoured me through you, to grant me an opportunity

مَعَ اِمَامٍ مَنْصُوْرٍ مِنْ اَهْلِ بَیْتِ مُحَمَّدٍ

MA-A’ EMAAMIN MANSOORIN MIN AHLE BAYTE MOHAMMADIN

to be with a victorious Imam, from the family of Muhammad,

صَلَّی اللهُ عَلَیْهِ وَآلِهٖ

SALLAL LAAHO A’LAYHE WA AALEHI

blessings of Allah be on him and his family.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِیْ عِنْدَكَ وَجِیْهًا بِالْحُسَیْنِ

ALLAAHUMMAJ A’LNEE I’NDAKA WAJEEHAN BIL-HUSAYNE

O Allah, make me worthy of respect with You, through Husayn,

عَلَیْهِ السَّلَامُ فِیْ الدُّنْیَا وَاْلآخِرَۃِ

A’LAYHIS SALAAMO FID-DUNYAA WAL AAAKHERATE

peace be on him, in this world and the Hereafter.

یَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

YAA ABAA A’BDIL LAAHE

O Abu Abdillah,

اِنِّی اَتَقَرَّبُ اِلَی اللهِ

INNEE ATAQARRABO ELAL LAAHE

I seek nearness to Allah,

وَاِلٰی رَسُوْلِهٖ وَاِلٰی اَمْیرِ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ

WA ELAA RASOOLEHEE WA ELAA AMEERIL MOMENEENA

and to His Messenger, to the Commander of the Faithful,

وَاِلٰی فَاطِمَۃَ وَاِلَی الْحَسَنِ وَاِلَیْكَ

WA ELAA FAATEMATA WA ELAL HASANE WA ELAYKA

to Fatima, and to Hasan, and to you,

بِمُوَالَاتِكَ وَبِالْبَرَآئَۃِ مِمَّنْ قَاتَلَكَ وَنَصَبَ لَك الْحَرْبَ

BE-MAWAALAATEKA WA BIL-BARAA-ATE MIMMAN QAATALAKA WA NASABA LAKAL HARBA

through love for you, and disassociating with those who killed you, and prepared to fight you

وَبِالْبَرَآئَۃِ مِمَّنْ اَسَّسَ اَسَاسَ الظُّلْمِ وَالْجَوْرِ عَلَیْكُمْ

WA BIL-BARAAA-ATE MIMMAN ASSASA ASAASAZ ZULME WAL JAWRE A’LAYKUM

and those who established the foundations of tyranny, and wrongs against you (O Ahl al-Bayt).

وَاَبْرَءُ اِلَی اللهِ وَاِلٰی رَسُوْلِهٖ مِمَّنْ اَسَّسَ اَسَاسَ ذٰلِكَ وَبَنی عَلَیْهِ بُنْیَانَهٗ

WA ABRAO ELAL LAAHE WA ELAA RASOOLEHEE MIMMAN ASSASA ASAASA ZAALEKA WA BANAA A’LAYHE BUNYAANAHU

I turn to Allah, and His Messenger, disassociating with those who laid grounds for it, and those who built upon it,

وَجَرٰی فِیْ ظُلْمِهٖ وَجَوْرِهٖ عَلَیْكُمْ

WA JARAA FEE ZULMEHEE WA JAWREHI A’LAYKUM

and carried out oppression and cruelty, on you

وَعَلی اَشْیَاعِكُمْ بَرِئْتُ اِلَی اللهِ وَاِلَیْكُمْ مِنْهُمْ

WA A’LAA ASHYAA-E’KUM BAREA’TO ELAL LAAHE WA ELAYKUM MINHUM

and your followers. I disassociate myself from them,

وَاَتَقَرَّبُ اِلَی اللهِ ثُمَّ اِلَیْكُمْ

WA ATAQARRABO ELAL LAAHE SUMMA ELAYKUM

and seek nearness to Allah, and then to you

بِمُوَالَاتِكُمْ وَمُوَالَاۃِ وَلِیِّكُمْ

BE-MAWAALAATEKUM WA MOWAALAATE WALIYYEKUM

through love for you and your friends,

وَبِالْبَرَآئَۃِ مِنْ اَعْدَائِكُمْ

WA BIL-BARAAA-ATE MIN AA’-DAAA-EKUM

and disassociation with your enemies,

وَالنَّاصِبِیْنَ لَكُمُ الْحَرْبَ

WAN NAASEBEENA LAKOMUL HARBA

and from those who went to war with you,

وَبِالْبَرَائَۃِ مِنْ اَشْیَاعِهِمْ وَاَتْبَاعِهِمْ

WA BIL BARAAA-ATE MIN ASHYAA-E’HIM WA ATBAA-E’HIM

their adherents and their followers.

اِنِّی سِلْمٌ لِمَنْ سَالَمَكُمْ

INNEE SILMUN LEMAN SAALAMAKUM

I am at peace with those who made peace with you,

وَحَرْبٌ لِمَنْ حَارَبَكُمْ

WA HARBUN LEMAN HAARABAKUM

and I am at war with those who went to war with you.

وَوَلِیٌّ لِمَنْ وَالَاكُمْ

WA WALIYYUN LEMAN WAALAAKUM

I befriend those who befriended you,

وَعَدُوٌّ لِمَنْ عَادَاكُمْ

WA A’DUWWUN LEMAN A’ADAAKUM

and I am at enmity with those who were your enemies.

فَاَسْئَلُ اللهَ الَّذِیْ اَكْرَمَنِیْ بِمَعْرِفَتِكُمْ

FA-AS-ALUL LAAHAL LAZEE AKRAMANEE BE MAA’REFATEKUM

I pray to Allah, who has honored me with awareness of you,

وَمَعْرِفَۃِ اَوْلِیَآئِكُمْ

WA MAA’REFATE AWLEYAAAEKUM

and awareness of your friends

وَرَزَقَنِیَ الْبَرَآئَۃَ مِنْ اَعْدَآئِكُمْ

WA RAZAQANIL BARAAA-ATA MIN AA’-DAAA-EKUM

and has enabled me to withdraw from your enemies.

اَنْ یَجْعَلَنِیْ مَعَكُمْ فِیْ الدُّنْیَا وَاْلآخِرَۃِ

WA ANY YAJ-A’LANEE MA-A’KUM FID DUNYAA WAL AAKHERATE

(I pray) that He may place me with you in this world and the Hereafter.

وَاَنْ یُثَبِّتَ لِی عِنْدَ كُمْ قَدَمَ صِدْقٍ

WA ANY YOSABBETA LEE I’NDAKUM QADAMA SIDQIN

And (I pray) that He may strengthen for me a truthful stance

فِیْ الدُّنْیَا وَاْلآخِرَۃِ

FID DUNYAA WAL AAKHERATE

in this world and the Hereafter.

وَاَسْئَلُهُ اَنْ یُبَلِّغَنِی الْمَقَامَ الْمَحْمُوْدَ لَكُمْ عِنْدَ اللهِ

WA AS-ALOHU ANY YOBALLEGHANIL MAQAAMAL MAHMOODA LAKUM I’NDAL LAAHE

And I pray that He may enable me to reach, your honoured station with Allah

وَاَنْ یَرْزُقَنِیْ طَلَبَ ثَارِیْ

WA ANY YARZOQANEE TALABA SAAREE

and that He may grant me the opportunity to seek victory,

مَعَ اِمَامٍ هُدًی ظَاهِرٍ نَاطِقٍ بِالْحَقِّ مِنْكُمْ

MA-A’ EMAAMIN HODAN ZAAHERIN NAATEQIN BIL-HAQQE MINKUM

along with a rightly guided Imam from amongst you, who will surely come and speak the truth.

وَاَسْئَلُ اللهَ بِحَقِّكُمْ وَبِالشَّانِ الَّذِیْ لَكُمْ عِنْدَهٗ

WA AS-ALUL LAAHA BE-HAQQEKUM WA BISH-SHAANIL LAZEE LAKUM I’NDAHU

I ask Allah for your sake, and by the honoured position you have with Him,

اَنْ یُعْطِیَنِیْ بِمُصَابِیْ بِكُمْ اَفْضَلَ مَا یُعْطِیْ مُصَابًا بِمُصِیْبَتِهٖ

ANY YOA’-TEYANEE BE-MOSAABEE BEKUM AFZALA MAA YOA’-TEE MOSAABAN BE-MOSEEBATIN

that He grants me grief at your sorrows, more than the personal grief that troubles anyone in tragedy.

مُصِیْبَۃً مَا اَعْظَمَهَا

MOSEEBATAN MAA AA’-ZAMAHAA

What great sorrows (you experienced)!

وَاَعْظَمَ رَزِیَّتَهَا فِیْ اْلاِسْلَامِ

WA AA’-ZAMA RAZIYYATAHAA FIL ISLAAME

How great was your tragedy for Islam,

وَفِیْ جَمِیْعِ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَاْلأَرْضِ

WA FEE JAMEE-I’S SAMAAWAATE WAL ARZ

and all the Heavens and the earth!

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِیْ فِیْ مَقَامِیْ هٰذَا مِمَّنْ

ALLAAHUMMAJ A’LNEE FEE MAQAAMEE HAAZAA MIMMAN

O Allah, make me, at this moment,

تَنَالُهٗ مِنْكَ صَلَوَاتٌ وَرَحْمَۃٌ وَمَغْفِرَۃٌ

TANAALOHU MINKA SALAWAATUN WA RAHMATUN WA MAGHFERATUN

one who receives from You, blessings, mercy, and forgiveness.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ مَحْیَایَ مَحْیَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ALLAAHUMAJ-A'L MAHYAAYA MAHYAA MOHAMMADIN WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

O Allah make me live the life of Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) and his family

وَمَمَاتِیْ مَمَاتَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

WA MAMAATEE MAMAATA MOHAMMADIN WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

and make me die the death of Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) and his family.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنَّ هٰذَا یَوْمٌ تَبَرَّكَتْ بِهٖ بَنُوْ اُمَیَّۃَ

ALLAAHUMMA INNA HAAZAA YAWMUN TABARRAKAT BEHI BANOO UMAYYATA

O my Allah this day is a day of rejoicing for the Bani Umayyah,

وَابْنُ آكِلَۃِ الْأَكُبَادِ اللَّعِیْنُ ابْنُ اللَّعِیْنِ عَلٰی لِسَانِكَ

WABNO AAKELATIL AKBAADIL LA-E'ENUBNUL LA-E'ENE A'LAA LESAANEKA

the herd of hardened criminals, the eternally damned and accursed group, a fact that had been made public by Thee

وَلِسَانِ نَبِیِّكَ صَلَّی اللهُ عَلَیْهِ وَآلِهٖ

WA LESAANE NABIYYEKA SALLAL LAAHO A’LAYHE WA AALEHI

and Your Prophet, blessings of Allah be on him and his family,

فِیْ كُلِّ مَوْطِنٍ وَمَوْقِفٍ وَقَفَ فِیْهِ نَبِیُّكَ صَلَّی اللهُ عَلَیْهِ وَآلِهٖ

FEE KULLE MAWTENIN WA MAWQEFIN WAQAFA FEEHE NABIYYOKA SALLAL LAAHO A’LAYHE WA AALEHI

Who (blessings of Allah be on him and his family), in every place and at all occasions, drew attention of people to this truism.

اَللّٰهُمَّ الْعَنْ اَبَا سُفْیَانَ وَمُعَاوِیَۃَ

ALLAAHUMMAAL-A'N ABAA SUFYAAN WA MO-A'AWEYATA

O Allah, curse Abu Sufyan, Mu`awiya,

وَیَزِیْدَ بْنَ مُعَاوِیَۃَ

WA YAZEEDABNA MO-A'AWEYATA

and Yazíd son of Mu`awiya

عَلَیْهِمْ مِنْكَ اللَّعْنَۃُ اَبَدَ الْآبِدِیْنَ

A'LAYHIM MINKAL LA’NATO ABADAL AABEDEENA

let it be an everlasting curse upon them from Thee.

وَهٰذَا یَوْمٌ فَرِحَتْ بِهٖ آلُ زِیادٍ وَآلُ مَرْوَانَ

WA HAAZAA YAWMUN FAREHAT BEHI AALO ZEYAADIN WA AALO MARWAANA

And this is a day when the family of Ziyad was happy, and the family of Marwan,

بِقَتْلِهِمُ الْحُسَیْنَ صَلَوٰاتُ اللهِ عَلَیْهِ

BE-QATLEHEMUL HUSAYNA SALAWAATUL LAAHE A'LAYHHE

because of their murder of Husayn, blessings of Allah be on him.

اَللّٰهُمَّ فَضَاعِفْ عَلَیْهِمُ الَّعْنَ مِنْكَ وَالْعَذَابَ الْاَلِيْمَ

ALLAAHUMMA FAZAA-I’F A’LAYHEMUL LA’NA MINKA WAL A’ZAABAL ALEEMA

O Allah, so increase the curse on them from You, and the painful punishment.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّیْ اَتَقَرَّبُ اِلَیْكَ فِیْ هٰذَا الْیَوْمِ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE ATAQARRABO ELAYKA FEE HAAZAL YAWME

O Allah, I seek nearness to You on this day,

وَفِیْ مَوْقِفِیْ هٰذَا وَاَیَّامِ حَیٰوتِیْ

WA FEE MAWQEFEE HAAZAA WA AYYAAME HAYAATEE

and in this position, and for the rest of my life,

بِالْبَرَآئَۃِ مِنْهُمْ وَاللَّعْنَۃِ عَلَیْهِمْ

BIL-BARAAA-ATE MINHUM WAL LA’NATE A’LAYHIM

through disassociating with them (the enemies) and cursing them,

وَبِالْمُوَالَاتِ لِنَبِیِّكَ وَآلِ نَبِیِّكَ

WA BIL MOWAALAATE LE-NABIYYEKA WA AALE NABIYYEKA

and through the love of Your Prophet,

عَلَیْهِ وَعَلِیْهِمُ السَّلَامُ

A’LAYHE WA A’LAYHEMUS SALAAMO.

and his family, peace be on them.

Then say 100 times:

اَللّٰهُمَّ الْعَنْ اَوّلَ ظَالِمٍ ظَلَمَ حَقَّ مُحَمَّدٍ

ALLAAHUMMAL A’N AWWALA ZAALEMIN ZALAMA HAQQA MOHAMMADIN

O Allah, curse the first tyrant who oppressed, the right of Muhammad

وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآخِرَ تَابِعٍ لَهٗ عَلٰی ذٰلِكَ

WA AALE MOHAMMADIN WA AAKHERA TAABE-I'N LAHU A'LAA ZAALEKA

and his family, and the next who followed him on that.

اَللّٰهُمَّ الْعَنِ الْعِصَابَۃَ الَّتِیْ جَاهَدَتِ الْحُسَیْنَ

ALLAAHUMMAL-A'NIL E'SAABATAL LATEE JAAHADATIL HUSAYNA

O Allah, curse the group who fought Husayn,

وَشَایَعَتْ وَبایَعَتْ وَتَابَعَتْ عَلٰی قَتْلِهٖ

WA SHAAYA-A'T WA BAA-YA-A'T WA TAA-BA-A'T A'LAA QATLEHI

and the group which followed and supported, and joined hands to kill him.

اَللّٰهُمَّ الْعَنْهُمْ جَمِیْعًا

ALLAHUMMAL-A'NHUM JAMEE-A'N.

O Allah curse them all

Then again say 100 times:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ

ASSALAAMO A'LAYKA YAA ABAA A'BDILLAAHE

Peace be on You O Abu Abdillah

وَعَلَی الْأَرْوَاحِ الَّتِیْ حَلَّتْ بِفِنَآئِكَ

WA A'LAL ARWAAHIL LATEE HALLAT BEFENAA-EKA

and on the souls that died with you.

عَلَیْكَ مِنّی سَلَامُ اللهِ اَبَدًا

A'LAYKA MINNE SALAAMUL LAAHE ABADAM

Greetings of Peace of Allah be on you, from me, forever so long as I live

مَا بَقِیْتُ وَبَقِيَ اللَّیْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

MAA BAQEETO WA BAQEYAL LAYLO WAN NAHAARO

and so long as the night and day remain.

وَلَا جَعَلَهُ اللهُ آخِرَ الْعَهْدِ مِنِّی لِزِیَارَتِكُمْ

WA LAA JA-A'LAHUL LAAHO AAKHERAL A’HDE MINNEE LE-ZEYAARATEKUM

May Allah not make it my last contact of ziyarat with you.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَی الْحُسَیْنِ

ASSALAAMO A'LAL HUSAYNE

Peace be on Husayn,

وَعَلٰی عَلِیِّ بْنِ الْحُسَیْنِ

WA A'LAA A'LIYYIBNIL HUSAYNE

and on Ali the son of Husayn,

وَعَلٰی اَوْلادِ الْحُسَیْنِ

WA A'LAA AWLAADIL HUSAYNE

And on the children of Husayn

وَعَلٰی اَصْحَابِ الْحُسَیْنِ

WA A'LAA ASHAABIL HUSAYNE

and the companions of Husayn,

Then say:

اَللّٰهُمَّ خُصَّ اَنْتَ اَوَّلَ ظَالِمٍ بِاللَّعْنِ مِنِّی

ALLAAHUMMA KHUSSA ANTA AWWALA ZAALEMIN BIL-LA'NE MINNEE

O my Allah, let the curse I call down on the head of the first tyrant stick like a leech;

وَابْدَأْ بِهٖ اَوَّلًا

WAB DAA BEHI AWWALAN

and stay put for ever on the first,

ثُمَّ الثَّانِيَۃْ وَالثَّالِثَ وَالرَّابِعْ

SUMMAS SAANEYA WAS SAALESA WAR RAABE’

then the second, the third, and the fourth.

اَللَّهُمَّ الْعَنْ یَزِیْدَ خَامِسًا

ALLAAHUMMAL-A'N YAZEEDA KHAAMESAN

O Allah, curse the fifth one, Yazíd,

وَالْعَنْ عُبَیْدَ اللهِ بْنِ زِیَادٍ وَابْنَ مَرْجَانَۃَ

WAL A'N O'BAYDAL LAAH IBNA ZEYAADIN WAB NA MARJAANAH

and Ubaidallah bin Ziyad, Ibne Marjanah,

وَعُمَرَبْنَ سَعْدٍ وَشِمْرًا

WA O'MAR ABNA SA'DIN WA SHIMRAN

and Umar ibne Sa’d, and Shimr,

وَآلَ أَبِيْ سُفْیَانَ وَآلَ زِیَادٍ

WA AALA ABEE SUFYAANA WA AALA ZEYAADIN

and the family of Abu Sufyan, the family of Ziyad,

وَآلَ مَرْوَانَ اِلٰی یَوْمِ الْقِیَامَۃِ.

WA AALA MARWAANA ELAA YAWMIL QEYAAMATE.

and the family of Marwan, till the Day of Judgement

Then go in Sajdah and say:

اَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ حَمْدَ الشَّاكِرِیْنَ لَكَ عَلٰی مُصَابِهِمْ

ALLAAHUMMA LAKAL HAMDO HAMDASH SHAAKEREENA LAKA A'LAA MOSAABEHIM

O Allah, for You is Praise, Praise of those who are thankful to You (even) during tragedy.

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلهِ عَلٰی عَظِیْمِ رَزِیَّتِیْ

ALHAMDO LILLAAHE A'LAA A'ZEEME RAZIYYATEE

Praise be to Allah for my intense grief

اَللّٰهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِیْ شَفَاعَۃَ الْحُسَیْنِ یَوْمَ الْوُرُوْدِ

ALLAAHUMMAR ZUQNEE SHAFAA-A'TAL HUSAYNE YAWMAL WOROODE

O Allah, grant me the intercession of Husayn, on the Day of appearance (before You),

وَثَبِّتْ لِیْ قَدَمَ صِدْقٍ عِنْدَكَ

WA SABBIT LEE QADAMA SIDQIN I’NDAKA

and strengthen for me a truthful stand with You,

مَعَ الْحُسَیْنِ وَاَصْحَابِ الْحُسَیْنِ الَّذِیْنَ

MA-A'L HUSAYNE WA ASHAABIL HUSAYNIL LAZEENA

with Husayn and the companions of Husayn,

بَذَلُوْا مُهَجَهُمْ دُوْنَ الْحُسَیْنِ عَلَیْهِ السَّلَامُ.

BAZALOO MOHAJAHUM DOONAL HUSAYNE A'LAYHIS SALAAMO.

who sacrificed everything, for Husayn, peace be on him.
