Ziyarah on the Id al-Fitr and Id al-Azha days

Text and Translation

It is worth mentioning that scholars have dedicated two forms of ziyarah to these two blessed feast days (i.e. ‘Id al-Fitr and ‘Id al-Azha). The first form has been previously cited as the ziyarah form at the Qadr Nights, while the other is the following. What is apparently understood from the words of the scholars is that the first form of ziyarah is said when one visits the holy shrine on the two days of ‘Id al-Fitr and ‘Id al-Azha, while the following form is said when the holy shrine is visited at the two nights before these two days. Thus, the ziyarah form is as follows:

When you intend to visit Imam al-Husayn (a.s.)’s tomb at these two nights, you may stop at the gate of the holy dome, cast your sight on the tomb, and seek permission of admission by saying,

یَا مَوْلَایَ یَا اَبَا عَبْدِ اﷲِ یَابْنَ رَسُوْلِ اﷲِ

YAA MAWLAAYA YAA ABAA A’BDILLAAHE YABNA RASOOLILLAAHE

O my master, O Abu Abdullah, O the son of the Apostle of Allah,

عَبْدُكَ وَابْنُ اَمَتِكَ الذَّلِیْلُ بَیْنَ یَدَیْكَ

A’BDOKA WABNO AMATEKAZ ZALEELO BAYNA YADAYKA

Your servant and the son of your servant and your maid, degraded in front of you and

وَالْمُصَغَّرُ فِیْ عُلُوِّ قَدْرِكَ وَالْمُعْتَرِفُ

WAL MOSAGHGHARO FEE O’LUWWE QADREKA WAL MO’TAREFO

diminutive in front of your lofty stature, attestor of

بِحَقِّكَ جَآئَكَ مُسْتَجِیْرًا بِكَ قَاصِداً اِلیٰ

BE HAQQEKA JAAA-AKA MUSTAJEERAN BEKA QAASEDAN ELAA

your right, He has come to you seeking refuge in you, entrant in

حَرَمِكَ مُتَوَجِّهًا اِلیٰ مَقَامِكَ مُتَوَسِّلًا اِلَی

HARAMEKA MOTAWAJJEHAN ELAA MAQAAMEKA MOTAWASSELAN ELAL

your sanctuary, facing your position beseeching Allah

اﷲِ تَعَالیٰ بِكَ ءَ اَدْخُلُ یَا مَوْلَایَ ءَاَدْخُلُ

LAAHE TA-A’ALAA BEKA A-ADKHOLO YAA MAWLAAYA A-ADKHOLO

through you, Do I enter, O my master. Do I enter,

یَا وَلِیَّ اﷲِ ءَاَدْخُلُ یَا مَلَائِكَۃَ اﷲِ

YAA WALIYYALLAAHE A-ADKHOLO YAA MALAAA-EKATALLAAHIL

O the representative of Allah? Do I enter, O the angels of Allah

الْمُحْدِقِیْنَ بِهٰذَا الْحَرَمِ الْمُقِیْمِیْنَ فِیْ

MOHDEQEENA BE HAAZAL HARAMIL MOQEEMEENA FEE

who enrich this sanctuary, and reside in

ھٰذَا الْمَشْهَدِ

HAAZAL MASH-HADE

this holy shrine?

If your heart feels reverence and your eyes shed tears, then you may enter by preceding your right foot to your left one. You may then say the following words:

بِسْمِ اﷲِ وَبِاﷲِ وَفِیْ سَبِیْلِ اﷲِ وَعَلیٰ

BISMILLAAHE WA BILLAAHE WA FEE SABEELILLAAHE WA A’LAA

In the name of Allah and by Allah and in the way of Allah and on the

مِلَّۃِ رَسُوْلِ اﷲِ اَللّٰھُمَّ اَنَزِلْنِیْ مُنْزَلًا

MILLATE RASOOLILLAAHE ALLAAHUMMA ANZILNEE MUNZALAN

nation of the Apostle of Allah. O Allah, You send down upon me a blessed

مُبَارَكًا وَاَنْتَ خَیْرُ الْمُنْزِلِیْنَ

MOBAARAKAN WA ANTA KHAYRUL MUNZELEENA

station and You are the best of those who reveal.

You may then say the following words:

اَللّٰهُ اَكْبَرُ كَبِیْرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ كَثِیْرًا وَسُبْحَانَ

ALLAAHO AKBARO KABEERAN WAL HAMDO LILLAAHE KASEERAN WA SUBHAANAL

Allah is most great and abundant praise is for Allah and I glorify Allah

اﷲِ بُكْرَۃً وَاَصِیْلًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الْفَرْدِ

LAAHE BUKRATAN WA ASEELAN WAL HAMDOLILLAAHIL FARDIS

morning and evening. All Praise belongs to Allah, the Unique,

الصَّمَدِ الْمَاجِدِ الْاَحَدِ الْمُتَفَضِّلِ الْمَنَّانِ

SAMADIL MAAJEDIL AHADIL MOTAFAZZELIL MANNAANIL

the Self-Sufficient, the Majestic, the One, the Gracious, the Obliger, the Benevolent,

الْمُتَطَوِّلِ الْحَنَّانِ الَّذِیْ مِنْ تَطَوُّلِهٖ سَهَّلَ

MOTA-TAWWELIL HANNAANIL LAZEE MIN TA-TAWWOLEHI SAH-HALA

the Benefactor, the One due to whose Benevolence and Goodness. He has eased

لِیْ زِیَارَۃَ مَوْلَایَ بِاِحْسَانِهٖ وَلَمْ یَجْعَلْنِیْ

LEE ZEYAARATA MAWLAAYA BE EHSAANEHI WA LAM YAJ-A’LNEE

for me the visitation of my visitation and did not prevent me from

عَنْ زِیَارَتِهٖ مَمْنُوْعًا وَلَا عَنْ ذِمَّتِهٖ مَدْفُوْعًا

A’N ZEYAARATEHI MAMNOO-A’N WA LAA A’N ZIMMATEHI MAD-FOO-A’N

it and has not stopped me from the discharge of my responsibilities.

بَلْ تَطَوَّلَ وَمَنَحَ

BAL TATAWWALA WA MANAHA

Rather He has favoured and honoured me.

You may then enter the shrine. When you reach its center, you may stop near the tomb with reverence, weeping, and submission, and say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا وَارِثَ اٰدَمَ صَفْوَۃِ اﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA AADAMA SAFWATIL LAAHE

Peace be on you, O the inheritor of Adam the sincerely attached friend of Allah!

السَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَاوَارِثَ نُوْحٍ اَمِیْنِ اﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA NOOHIN AMEENIL LAAHE

Peace be on you, O the inheritor of Nooh, the prophet of Allah!

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا وَارِثَ اِبْرَاهِیْمَ خَلِیْلِ اﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA IBRAAHEEMA KHALEELIL LAAHE

Peace be on you, O the inheritor of Abraham, the intimate friend of Allah!

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا وَارِثَ مُوْسیٰ كَلِیْمِ اﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA MOOSAA KALEEMIL LAAHE

Peace be on you, O the inheritor of Moses who spoke to Allah!

اَلسَّلامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا وَارِثَ عِیْسیٰ رُوْحِ اﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA E’ESAA ROOHIL LAAHE

Peace be on you, O the inheritor of Jesus who received peace, joy, and mercy from Allah!

السَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا وَارِثَ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّی

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA MOHAMMADIN SALLAL

Peace be on you, O the inheritor of Mohammad, blessings of

اﷲُ عَلَیْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ حَبِیْبِ اﷲِ

LAAHO A’LAYHE WA AALEHI HABEEBILLAAHE

Allah be upon him and his family, the dearest beloved of Allah!

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا وَارِثَ عَلِیٍّ حُجَّۃٍ اﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WAARESA A’LIYYIN HUJJATILLAAHE

Peace be on you, O the inheritor of Amir ul-Mu’minin, peace be upon him.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ اَیُّهَا الْوَصِیُّ الْبَرُّ التَّقِیُّ

ASSAALAMO A’LAYKA AYYOHAL WASIYYUL BARRUT TAQIYYO

Peace be on you, O the vicegerent, the righteous, the pious

السَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا ثَارَاﷲِ وَابْنَ ثَارِهٖ وَالْوِتْرَ الْمَوْتُوْرَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA SAARALLAAHE WABNA SAAREHI WAL WITRAL MAWTOORA

Peace be on you, O he whose blood-claimer is Allah, He is the blood-claimer of your father also, as those who persecuted you, your relatives and friends have not been punished for the crimes.

اَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ قَدْ اَقَمْتَ الصَّلوٰۃَ وَاٰتَیْتَ

ASH-HADO ANNAKA QAD AQAMTAS SALAATA WA AATAYTAZ

I bear witness that verily you established the prayers, gave

الزَّكوٰۃَ وَاَمَرْتَ بِالْمَعْرُوْفِ وَنَهَیْتَ

ZAKAATA WA AMARTA BIL MA’ROOFE WA NAHAYTA

the zakat (prescribed share) to the needy, commanded to do what is right and lawful, not to do that

عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَجَاهَدْتَ فِی اﷲِ حَقَّ

A’NIL MUNKARE WA JAAHADTA FILLAAHE HAQQA

which is wrong and unlawful, and you fought in the way of Allah in letter and

جِهَادِهِ حَتَّی اسْتُبِیْحَ حَرَمُكَ وَقُتِلْتَ مَظْلُوْمًا

JEHAADEHI HATTAS TOBEE-HA HARAMOKA WA QOTILTA MAZLOOMAN

spirit till your sanctuary was violated and you were killed oppressively.

You may then stop at the side of the Imam’s head with submissive heart and teary eyes and say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا اَبَا عَبْدِاﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA ABAA A’BDILLAAHE

Peace be on you, O Abu Abdullah

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ رَسُوْلِ اﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA RASOOLILLAAHE

Peace be on you, O the son of the Apostle of Allah

السَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا بْنَ سَیِّدِ الْوَصِیِّیْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA SAYYEDILWASIYYEENA

Peace be on you, O the son of the chief of the successors

السَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ فَاطِمَۃَ الزَّهْرَآئِ سَیِّدَۃِ نِسَآئِ الْعَالَمِیْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA FAATEMATAZ ZAHRAAA-E SAYYEDATE NESAAA-IL A’ALAMEENA

Peace be on you, O the son of Fatemah Zahra, the chief of the women of the universe

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا بَطَلَ الْمُسْلِمِیْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA BATALAL MUSLEMEENA

Peace be on you, O the valiant warrior of the Muslims.

یَا مَوْلَایَ اَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ كُنْتَ نُوْراً فِیْ

YAA MAWLAAYA ASH-HADO ANNAKA KUNTA NOORAN FIL

O my Master, I bear witness that verily you were a light in the

الْاَصْلَابِ الشَّامِخَۃِ وَالْاَرْحَامِ الْمُطَهَّرَۃِ

ASLAABISH-SHAAMEKHATE WAL ARHAAMIL MOTAHHARATE

sublime loins and purified wombs,

لَمْ تُنَجِّسْكَ الْجَاهِلِیَّۃُ بِاَنْجَاسِهَا وَلَمْ

LAM TONAJJISKAL JAAHELIYYATO BE ANJAASEHAA WA LAM

the impurities of ignorance did not even touch you, nor

تُلْبِسْكَ مِنْ مُدْ لَهِمَّاتِ ثِیَابِهَا

TULBISKA MIN MUDLAHIMMAATE SEYAABEHAA

could its soiled and dirty bearing ever smear you.

وَاَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ مِنْ دَعَآئِمِ الدِّیْنِ وَاَرْكَانِ

WA ASH-HADO ANNAKA MIN DA-AAA-EMID DEENE WA ARKAANIL

I bear witness that, verily, you are the mainstay of the religion, and the support

الْمُسْلِمِیْنَ وَمَعْقِلِ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ

MUSLEMEENA WA MA’QELIL MOMENEENA

of the Muslims and the sanctuary of the believers.

وَاَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ الْاِمَامُ الْبَرُّالتَّقِیُّ الرَّضِیُّ

WA ASH-HADO ANNAKAL EMAAMUL BARRUT TAQIYYUR RAZIYYUZ

I bear witness that, verily, you are a righteous, pious, satisfied,

الزَّكِیُّ الْهَادِیْ الْمَهْدِیّ وَاَشْهَدُ اَنَّ

ZAKIYYUL HAADIL MAHDIYYE WA ASH-HADO ANNAL

chaste, guide, guided, and I bear witness that

الْاَئِمَّۃَ مِنْ وُلْدِكَ كَلِمَۃُ التّقْویٰ وَاَعْلَامُ

A-IMMATA MIN WULDEKA KALAMATUT TAQWAA WA A-ALAAMUL

the leaders from your progeny are the words of piety and the standards

الْهُدیٰ وَالْعُرْوَۃُ الْوُثْقٰی وَالْحُجَّۃُ عَلٰی

HODAA WAL U’RWATUL WUSQAA WAL HUJJATO A’LAA

of guidance and the strong rope and proofs upon

اَهْلِ الدُّنْیَا

AHLID DUNYAA

the people of the world.

You may then throw yourself on the tomb and say the following words:

اِنَّا لِلّٰهِ وَاِنَّا اِلَیْهِ رَاجِعُوْنَ یَامَوْلَایَ اَنَا

INNAA LILLAAHE WA INNAA ELAYHE RAA-JE-O’ONA YAA MAWLAAYA ANAA

To Allah do we belong and unto Him shall we return. O my master, I am

مُوَالٍ لِوَلِیِّكُمْ وَمُعَادٍ لِعَدُوِّكُمْ وَاَنَا بِكُمْ

MOWAALIN LE WALIYYEKUM WA MO-A’ADIN LE A’DUWWEKUM WA ANAA BEKUM

a friend of your friends and an enemy to your enemy. I believe in you

مُؤْمِنٌ وَبِاِیَاكُمْ مُوْقِنٌ بِشَرَایِعِ دِیْنِیْ

MOA-MENUN WA BE EYAAKUM MOOQENUN BE SHA-RAA-YE-E’ DEENEE

and am certain about your return along with the laws of my religion

وَخَوَاتِیْمِ عَمَلِیْ وَقَلْبِیْ لِقَلْبِكُمْ سِلْمٌ

WA KHAWAATEEME A’MALEE WA QALBEE LE QALBEKUM SILMUN

and the end result of my deeds and my heart submits to your heart

وَاَمْرِیْ لِأَمْرِكُمْ مُتَّبِعٌ یَا مَوْلَایَ اَتَیْتُكَ

WA AMREE LE AMREKUM MUTTABE-O’ON YAA MAWLAAYA ATAYTOKA

and my affair follows your command. O my master! I come to you

خَائِفًا فَاٰمِنِّیْ وَاَتَیْتُكَ مُسْتَجِیْراً فَاَجِرْنِیْ

KHAA-EFAN FA-AAMINNEE WA ATAYTOKA MUSTAJEERAN FA-AJIRNEE

as a fearful person then grant me security and I come to you as one seeking your refuge then grant me cover

وَاَتَیْتُكَ فَقِیْراً فَاَغْنِنِیْ سَیِّدِیْ وَمَوْلَایَ

WA ATYATOKA FAQEERAN FA-AGHNENEE SAYYEDEE WA MAWLAAYA

and I come to you as a destitute. Then you make me needless of other. O my master and my chief,

اَنْتَ مَوْلَایَ حُجَّۃُ اﷲِ عَلَی الْخَلْقِ

ANTA MAWLAAYA HUJJATULLAAHE A’LAL KHALQE

you are my master, the proof of Allah upon the entire

اَجْمَعِیْنَ اٰمَنْتَُ بِسِرِّكُمْ وَعَلَانِیَّتِكُمْ

AJ-MAE’ENA AAMANTO BE SIRREKUM WA A’LAANIYYATEKUM

creation. I believe in your hidden and your evident affairs

وَبِظَاهِرِكُمْ وَبَاطِنِكُمْ وَاَوّلِكُمْ وَاٰخِرُكُمْ

WA BE JAAHEREKUM WA BAATENEKUM WA AWWALEKUM WA AAKHEREKUM

and your exterior and your interior and your first and your last.

وَاَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ التَّالِیْ لِكِتابِ اﷲِ وَاَمِیْنُ

WA ASH-HADO ANNAKAT TAALEE LE-KETAABILLAAHE WA AMEENUL

And I bear witness that you are the reciter the Book of Allah and the trustee

اﷲِ الدَّاعِی اِلَی اﷲِ بِالحْكْمَۃِ وَالْمَوْعِظَۃِ

LAAHID DAA-E’EE ELALLAAHE BIL HIKMATE WAL MAW-E’ZATIL

of Allah and the caller towards Allah with wisdom and goodly

الْحَسَنَۃِ لَعَنَ اﷲُ اُمَّۃً ظَلَمَتْكَ وَاُمَّۃً

HASANATE LA-A’NALLAAHO UMMATAN ZALAMATKA WA UMMATAN

admonition. May Allah curse the people who have oppressed you and the people who have

قَتَلَتْكَ وَلَعَنَ اﷲُ اُمَّۃً سَمِعَتْ بِذَالِكَ

QATALATKA WA LA-A’NALLAAHO UMMATAN SAME-A’T BE ZAALEKA

killed you and the people who heard about it

فَرَضِیَتْ بِهٖ

FA-RAZEYAT BEHI

but agree to it.

You may then offer a two-unit prayer to the side of the Imam’s head and when you finish, you may say the following words:

اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنِّیْ لَكَ صَلَّیْتُ وَلَكَ رَكَعْتُ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE LAKA SALLAAYTO WA LAKA RA-KA’TO

O Allah! I have prayed to You

وَلَكَ سَجَدْتُ وَحَدْكَ لَا شَرِیْكَ لَكَ فَاِنَّهٗ

WA LAKA SAJADTO WAHDAKA LAA SHAREEKA LAKA FA INNAHU

and I have bowed down before You and I prostrate in front of You. You are One, There is no partner unto You

لَا تَجُوْزُ الصَّلوٰۃُ وَالرُّكُوعُ وَالسُّجُوْدُ

LAA TAJOOZUS SALAATO WAR ROKOO-O’ WAS SOJOODO

as there is no prayer or bowing or prostration except for You.

اِلاَّ لَكَ لِاَنَّكَ اَنْتَ اﷲُ الَّذِیْ لَا اِلٰهَ اَنْتَ

ILLAA LAKA LE ANNAKA ANTALLAAHUL LAZEE LAA ELAAHA ANTA

For surely You are Allah. There is no God except You.

اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلیٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ALLAAHUMMA SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADIN WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

O Allah! Send blessings on Mohammad and the progeny of Mohammad

وَاَبْلِغْهُمْ عَنِّیْ اَفْضَلَ السَّلَامِ وَالتَّحِیَّۃِ

WA ABLIGH-HUM A’NNEE AFZALAS SALAAME WAT TAHIYYATE

and make the best form of greetings and salutations reach them from my side. And also send back to me their greetings and salutations.

وَارْدُدْ عَلَيَّ مِنْهُمُ السَّلَامَ

WAR-DUD A’LAYYA MINHOMUS SALAAMA

make the best form of greetings and salutations reach them from my side. And also send back to me their greetings and salutations.

اللّٰهُمَّ وَهَاتَانِِ الرَّكْعَتَانِ هَدِیَّۃٌ مِنِّیْ اِلیٰ

ALLAAHUMMA WA HAATAANIR RAK-A’TAANE HADIYYATUN MINNEE ELAA

O Allah! These are two cycles of prayers, which is a gift from my side in the service

سَیِّدِیْ الْحُسَیْنِ بنِ عَلِیٍّ عَلَیْهِمَا السَّلَامُ

SAYYEDIL HUSAYNIBNE A’LIYYIN A’LAYHEMAS SALAAMO

of my master and leader and my chief Husayn ibn Ali, peace be upon both of them.

اَللّٰھُمَّ صَلِّ عَلیٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَیْهِ

ALLAAHUMMA SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADIN WA A’LAYHE

O Allah! Send blessings on Mohammad and the progeny of Mohammad and

وَتَقَبَّلْهُمَا مِنّیْ وَاجْزِنِیْ عَلَیْهِمَا اَفْضَلَ

WA TAQABBAL-HOMAA MINNEE WAJ-ZENEE A’LAYHEMAA AFZALA

and accept that from me and reward me for that to the extent

اَمَلِیْ وَرَجَآئِیْ فِیْكَ وَفِیْ وَلِیِّكَ یَا وَلِیَّ

AMALEE WA RA-JAAA-EE FEEKA WA FEE WALIYYEKA YAA WALIYYAL

of my greatest desires and hopes from You and Your representative

الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ

MOMINEENA.

of the believers

You may then throw yourself on the tomb, kiss it, and say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَی الْحُسَیْنِ بْنِ عَلِیٍّ الْمَظْلُوْمِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAL HUSAYNIBNE A’LIYYENIL MAZLOOMISH

Peace be on Husayn son of Ali, the oppressed,

الشَّهِیْدِ قَتِیْلِ الْعَبْرَاتِ وَاَسِیْرِ الْكُرُبَاتِ

SHAHEEDE QATEELIL A’BRAATE WA ASEERIL KOROBAATE

the martyred, the one who was killed while he was in tears and the one engulfed in calamities.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّیْ اَشْهَدُ اَنَّهٗ وَلِیُّكَ وَابْنُ وَلِیِّكَ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE ASH-HADO ANNAHU WALIYYOKA WABNO WALIYYEKA

O Allah, I bear witness that he is Your representative and the son of Your representative

وَصَفِیُّكَ الثَّائِرُ بِحَقِّكَ اَكْرَمْتَهُ بِكَرَامَتِكَ

WA SAFIYYOKAS SAA-ERO BE HAKKEKA AKRAMTAHU BE KARAAMATEKA

and Your chosen one, the one who will take revenge by Your right, You have honoured him by Your nobility

وَخَتَمْتَ لَهٗ بِالشَّهَادَۃِ وَجَعَلْتَهٗ سَیِّدًا مِنَ

WA KHATAMTA LAHU BISH SHA-HAADATE WA JA-A’LTAHU SAYYEDAN MENAS

and have sealed his fate with martyrdom and have made him as a leader

السَّادَۃِ وَقَائِدًا مِنَ الْقَادَۃِ وَاَكْرَمْتَهٗ

SAADATE WA QAAEDAN MENAL QAADATE WA AKRAMTAHU

of the leaders and a guide of the guides and You have honoured him

بِطِیْبِ الْوِلَادَۃِ وَاعْظَمْتَه مَوَارِیْثَ الْاَنْبِیَائِ

BE TEEBIL WELAADATE WA’ZAMTAHU MAWAAREESAL ANBEYAA-E

with a pure lineage and granted him the inheritance of the Prophets

وَجَعَلْتَهٗ حُجَّۃً عَلیٰ خَلْقِكَ مِنَ

WA JA-A’LTAHU HUJJATAN A’LAA KHALQEKA MENAL

and made him a proof over Your creation

الْاَوْصِیَآئِ فَاَعْذَرَ فِیْ الدُّعَآئِ وَمَنَحَ

AWSEYAAA-E FA-AA’ZARA FID DO-AAA-E WA MANAHAN

from the vicegerents. Then he fulfilled the right of calling (towards You) and offered

النَّصِیْحَۃَ وَبَذَلَ مُهْجَتَهٗ فِیْكَ حَتَّی

NASEEHATA WA BAZALA MOH-JATAHU FEEKA HATTAS

advice and laid down his life for You

اسْتَنْقَذَ عِبَادَكَ مِنَ الْجَهَالَۃِ وَحَیْرَۃِ

TANQAZA E’BAADAKA MENAL JAHAALATE WA HAYRATIZ

to the extent that he removed Your servants from ignorance and the perplexity of

الضَّلالَۃِ وَقَدْ تَوَازَرَ عَلَیْهِ مَنْ غَرَّتْهُ

ZALAALATE WA QAD TAWAA-ZARA A’LAYHE MIN GHARRAT-HUD

deviation. Then a group rose up against him who had been deceived

الدُّنْیَا وَبَاعَ حَظَّهُ مِنَ الْاٰخِرَۃِ بِالْاَدْنیٰ

DUNYAA WA BAA-A’ HAZZAHU MENAL AAKHERATE BIL AD-NAA

by this world and had sold their share of the hereafter for a measly remuneration

وَتَرَدیّٰ فِیْ هُوَاهُ وَاَسْخَطَكَ وَاَسْخَطَ

WA TARADDAA FEE HOWAAHO WA AS-KHATAKA WA AS-KHATA

and perished in their carnal desires and angered You and

نَبِیِّكَ وَاَطَاعَ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ اُولِی الشِّقَاقِ

NABIYYEKA WA A-TAA-A’ MIN E’BAADEKA OOLISH SHEQAAQE

Your Prophet and obeyed from Your servants the people of discord,

وَالنِّفَاقِ وَحَمَلَۃَ الْاَوْزَارِ الْمُسْتَوْحِبِیْنَ

WAN NEFAAQE WA HAMALATAL AWZAARIL MUSTAWHEBEENAN

and hypocrisy and the committer of sins which makes them deserve

النَّارَ فَجَاهَدَهُمْ فِیْكَ صَابِراً مُحْتَسِباً

NAARA FA JAAHADAHUM FEEKA SAABERAN MOHTASEBAN

Hell-fire. Then he fought against such people in Your way as a patient, expectant,

مُقْبِلًا غَیْرَ مُدْبِرٍ لَا تَاْخُذُهٗ فِیْ اﷲِ لَوْمَۃُ

MUQBELAN GHAYRA MUDBERAN LAA TA-KHOZOHU FILLAAHE LAWMATO

stepping forward and not turning back. The slandering of any maligner did not affect him in the

لآئِمٍ حَتّٰی سُفِكَ فِیْ طَاعَتِكَ دَمُهٗ

LAAA-EMIN HATTAA SOFEKA FEE TAA-A’TEKA DAMOHU

way of Allah till his blood was shed in Your way and

وَاسْتُبِیْحَ حَرِیْمُهُ اَللّٰهُمَّ الْعَنْهُمْ لَعْنًا وَبِیْلًا

WAS TOBEEHA HAREEMOHU ALLAAHUMMAL A’NHUM LA’NAN WABEELAN

his sanctity was violated. O Allah! Curse them with a calamitous curse

وَعَذِّبْهُمْ عَذَاباً اَلِیْمًا

WA A’ZZIBHUM A’ZAABAN ALEEMAN

and punish them with a painful punishment.

You may then turn to ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (a.s.), who is buried to the side of Imam al-Husayn’s feet, and say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا وَلِیَّ اﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA WALIYYALLAAHE

Peace be on you, O the representative of Allah.

السَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا بْنَ رَسُوْلِ اﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA RASOOLILLAAHE

Peace be on you, O the son of the Apostle of Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ خَاتَمِ النَّبِیِّیْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA KHAATAMIN NABIYYEENA

Peace be on you, O the son of the last of the Prophets.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ فَاطِمَۃَ سَیَّدَۃِ نِسَآئِ الْعٰلَمِیْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA FAATEMATA SAYYEDATE NESAAA-IL A’ALAMEENA

Peace be on you, O the son of Fatemah, the leader of the women of the Universe.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ اَمِیْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِیْنَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA AMEERIL MOMINEENA

Peace be on you, O the son of the commander of the faithful.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ اَیُّهَا الْمَظْلُوْمُ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA AYYOHAL MAZLOOMUSH

Peace be on you, O the oppressed,

الشَّهِیْدُ بِاَبِیْ اَنْتَ وَاُمِّیْ عِشْتَ سِعِیْدًا

SHAHEEDO BE ABEE ANTA WA UMMEE ISHTA SA-E’EDAN

the martyred May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you,

وَقُتِلْتَ مَظْلُوْماً شَهِیْدًا

WA QOTILTA MAZLOOMAN SHAHEEDAN

you lived a very fortunate life and were killed as oppressed martyred.

You may then turn to the tombs of the martyrs - may Allah’s pleasure be upon them - and say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ اَیُّهَا الذّٰابُونَ عَنْ تَوْحِیْدِ اﷲِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA AYYOHAZ ZAABBOONA A’N TAWHEEDILLAAHE

Peace be on you, O the defenders of the unity of Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكُمْ بِمَا صَبَرْتُمْ فَنِعْمَ عَقْبَی

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKUM BEMAA SABARTUM FA NEA’MA AQBAD

Peace be on you, for what you were patient upon, then you have the best

الدَّارِ بِاَبِیْ اَنْتُمْ وَاُمِّیْ فُزْتُمْ فَوْزاً عَظِیْمًا

DAARE BE ABEE ANTUM WA UMMEE FUZTUM FAWZAN A’ZEEMAN

abode in the hereafter. May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you, you have attained a great success.

You may then walk to the shrine of al-’Abbas ibn ‘Ali, stop at his holy tomb, and say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ اَیُّهَا الْعَبْدُ الصَّالِحُ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA AYYOHAL A’BDUS SAALEHO

Peace be on you, O the righteous servant

وَالصِّدِّیْقُ الْمُوَاسِیْ

WAS SIDDEEQUL MOWAASEE

and truthful who is beneficial.

اَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ اَمَنْتَ بِاﷲِ وَنَصَرْتَ ابْنَ

ASH-HADO ANNAKA AMANTA BILLAAHE WA NASARTABNA

I bear witness that you believed in Allah and helped the son of

رَسُوْلِ اﷲِ وَدَعَوْتَ اِلیٰ سَبِیْلِ اﷲِ

RASOOLILLAAHE WA DA-A’WTA ELAA SABEELILLAAHE WA

the Apostle of Allah and you called towards the way of Allah

وَوَاسَیْتَ بِنَفْسِكَ عَلَیْكَ مِنَ اﷲِ اَفْضَلُ التَّحِیَّۃِ وَالسَّلَامِ

WAA SAYTA BE NAFSEKA A’LAYKA MENALLAAHE AFZALUT TAHIYYATE WASSALAAME

and laid down your own life, then upon you be the best of greetings and salutation from Allah.

You may now throw yourself on the tomb and say the following words:

بِاَبِیْ اَنْتَ وَاَمِّیْ یَا نَاصِرَ دِیْنِ اﷲِ

BE ABEE ANTA WA UMMEE YAA NAASERA DEENILLAAHE

May my father and my mother be sacrificed for you, O the helper of the religion of Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَانَاصِرَ الْحُسِیْنِ الصِّدِّیْقِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA NAASERAL HUSAYNISH SIDDEEQE

Peace be on you, O the helper of Husayn, the truthful.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا نَاصِرَ الْحُسَیْنِ الشَّهِیْدِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA NAASERAL HUSAYNISH SHAHEEDE

Peace be on you, O the helper of Husayn, the martyr.

عَلَیْكَ مِنِّیْ السَّلَامُ مَا بَقِیْتُ وَبَقِیَ اللَّیْلُ

A’LAYKA MINNIS SALAAMO MAA BAQEETO WA BAQEYAL LAYLO

Peace be on you from me till the time I exist and the night and the

وَالنَّهَارُ

WAN NAHAARO

day exist.

You may then stand up to offer a two-unit prayer to the side of his head and then repeat the same words that you have said after offering a prayer at Imam al-Husayn’s shrine. These words, which have been previously cited, begin with the following statement:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ‏ صَلَّيْتُ۔۔۔

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE SALLAYTO….

O Allah! I prayed namaz….

You may then return to the shrine of Imam al-Husayn (a.s.) to reside there for any period you like. However, it is recommended not to appoint the holy shrine as one’s place of residence and spending the night there.

If you intend to leave and bid farewell to the Imam (a.s.), you may stop at the side of the head and say the following words while weeping:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا مَوْلَایَ سَلَامَ مُوَدِّعٍ لَا

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA MAWLAAYA SALAAMA MOWADDE-I’N LAA

Peace be on you, O my Master! This is the farewell salutation of the departing visitor,

قَالٍ وَلَا سَئِمٍ فَاِنْ اَنْصَرِفْ فَلَا عَنْ مَلَالَۃٍ

QAALIN WA LAA SA-EMIN FA-IN ANSARIF FALAA A’N MALAA-LATIN

neither due to lack of interest, nor on account of fatigue; and if I go back, it is not because of uneasiness; and

وَاِنْ اُقِمْ فَلَا عَنْ سُوْٓئِ ظَنٍّ بِمَا وَعَدَ اﷲُ

WA IN OQIM FALAA A’N SOOO-E ZANNIN BEMAA WA-A’DALLAAHUS

if I stay, it is not in view of the tempting persuasion which Allah has set forth for

الصَّابِرِیْنَ یَا مَوْلَایَ لَا جَعَلَهُ اﷲُ اٰخِرَ

SAABEREENA YAA MAWLAAYA LAA JA-A’LAHULLAAHO AAKHERAL

those who endure. O my Master, may Allah let not my this visit to you be the last one,

الْعَهْدِ مِنِّیْ لِزِیَارَتِكَ وَرَزَقَنِی الْعَوْدَ

A’HDE MINNEE LE ZEYAARATEKA WA RAZAQANIL A’WDA

but enable me to come back here again and again,

اِلَیْكَ وَالْمَقَامَ فِیْ حَرَمِكَ وَالْكَوْنَ فِیْ

ELAYKA WAL MAQAAMA FEE HARAMEKA WAL KAWNA FEE

visit your holy Haram and be near your resting

مَشْهَدِكَ اٰمِیْنَ رَبَّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ

MASH-HADEKA AAMEEN RABBAL A’ALAMEENA

abode. So let it be, O Lord of the worlds!

You may then kiss the tomb and try to pass your entire body over it, because this tomb is security and protection. You may then leave it by walking backwards without giving your back to the tomb. You may say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا بَابَ الْمَقَامَ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA BAABAL MAQAAMA

Peace be on you, O the door of dignity.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا شَرِیْكَ الْقُرْآنِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA SHAREEKAL QUR-AAANE

Peace be on you, O the associate of Holy Quran.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا حُجَّۃَ الْخِصَامِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA HUJJATAL KHESAAME

Peace be on you, O the argument of Allah against the enemies.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَا سَفِیْنَۃَ النَّجَاۃِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YAA SAFEENATAN NAJAATE

Peace be on you, O the ark of salvation.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكُمْ یَا مَلآئِكَۃَ رَبِّیْ الْمُقِیْمِیْنَ فِیْ هٰذَا الْحَرَمِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKUM YAA MALAAA-EKATA RABBIL MOQEEMEENA FEE HAAZAL HARAME

Peace be on you, O the angles of my Lord who reside in this sanctuary.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ اَبَدًا مَا بَقِیْتُ وَبَقِیَ اللَّیْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA ABADAN MAA BAQEETO WA BAQEYAL LAYLO WAN NAHAARO

Peace be on you always till I exist and the night and the day exist.

You may also say the following words:

اِنَّا لِلّٰهِ وَاِنَّا اِلَیْهِ رَاجِعُوْنَ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا

INNAA LILLAAHE WA INNAA ELAYHE RAAJE-O’ONA WA LAA HAWLA

To Allah we belong to Him shall we return. And there is no Power

قُوَّۃَ اِلاَّ بِاﷲِ الْعَلِیَّ الْعَظِیْمِ

WA LAA QUWWATA ILLAA BILLAAHIL A’LIYYIL A’ZEEME

no Strength except with Allah, the exalted, the great.

You may then leave.

Sayyid Ibn Tawus and Muhammad ibn al-Mashhadi said, “If you do all these devotional acts (correctly), you will be as if you have visited Almighty Allah in His Divine Throne.”
