Ziyarah of Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (a.s.) — Kazimayn

Text and Translation

First Ziyarah

Recitation at the entrance /Izn Dukhool

اللَّهُ اكْبَرُ ٱللَّهُ اكْبَرُ

allahu akbaru allahu akbaru

Allah is the Most Great. Allah is the Most Great.

لاََ إِِلٰهَ إِِلاَّ ٱللَّهُ وَٱللَّهُ اكْبَرُ

la ilaha illa allahu wallahu akbaru

There is no god save Allah. And Allah is the Most Great.

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ عَلَىٰ هِدَايَتِهِ لِدِينِهِ

alhamdu lillahi `ala hidayatihi lidinihi

All praise be to Allah for guiding [me] to His religion

وَٱلتَّوْفِيقِ لِمَا دَعَا إِِلَيْهِ مِنْ سَبِيلِهِ

walttawfiqi lima da`a ilayhi min sabilihi

and for leading [me] successfully to His Course to which He has invited (us).

اَللَّهُمَّ إِِنَّكَ اكْرَمُ مَقْصُودٍ

allahumma innaka akramu maqsudin

O Allah, You are verily the most Honorable Besought One

وَاكْرَمُ مَاتِيٍّ

wa akramu ma'tiyyin

and the most Honorable Purposed One.

وَقَدْ اتَيْتُكَ مُتَقَرِّباً إِِلَيْكَ

wa qad ataytuka mutaqarriban ilayka

I thus have come to You, seeking nearness to You

بِٱبْنِ بِنْتِ نَبِيِّكَ

bibni binti nabiyyika

in the name of the son of Your Prophet’s daughter,

صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰ آبَائِهِ ٱلطَّاهِرِينَ

salawatuka `alayhi wa `ala aba'ihi alttahirina

Your blessings be upon him and upon his immaculate fathers

وَابْنَائِهِ ٱلطَّيِّبِينَ

wa abna'ihi alttayyibina

and pure sons.

اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍٍ

allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

O Allah, (please) send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

وَلاَ تُخَيِّبْ سَعْيِي

wa la tukhayyib sa`yi

never frustrate my efforts,

وَلاَ تَقْطَعْ رَجَائِي

wa la taqta` raja'i

never cut off my hope,

وَٱجْعَلْنِي عِنْدَكَ وَجِيهاً

waj`alni `indaka wajihan

make me illustrious in Your view

فِي ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ وَمِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ

fi alddunya wal-akhirati wa min almuqarrabina

in this world as well as the world to come, and make me of those brought near to You.

You may then enter the shrine by preceding your right foot (to the left), saying the following words:

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَبِٱللَّهِ

bismi allahi wa billahi

In the Name of Allah (I begin), in Allah (I trust),

وَفِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ

wa fi sabili allahi

and on the way of Allah

وَعَلَىٰ مِلَّةِ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ

wa `ala millati rasuli allahi

and on the norm of the Messenger of Allah (I proceed),

صَلَّىٰ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ

salla allahu `alayhi wa alihi

may Allah bless him and his Household.

اَللَّهُمَّ ٱغْفِرْ لِي وَلِوَالِدَيَّ

allahumma ighfir li wa liwalidayya

O Allah, (please do) forgive me, my parents,

وَلِجَمِيعِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ

wa lijami`i almu'minina walmu'minati

and all the believing men and women.

When you reach the gate of the dome, you may stop there and ask permission of entrance by saying the following words:

اادْخُلُ يَا رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ

a'adkhulu ya rasula allahi

O Allah’s Messenger, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا نَبِيَّ ٱللَّهِ

a'adkhulu ya nabiyya allahi

O Allah’ Prophet, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنَ عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ

a'adkhulu ya muhammadu bna `abdillahi

O Muhammad the son of `Abdullah, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا امِيرَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

a'adkhulu ya amira almu'minina

O Commander of the Faithful, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا ابَا مُحَمَّدٍ ٱلْحَسَنُ

a'adkhulu ya aba muhammadin alhasanu

O Abu-Muhammad al-Hasan, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا ابَا عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْحُسَيْنُ

a'adkhulu ya aba `abdillahi alhusaynu

O Abu-`Abdullah al-Husayn, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا ابَا مُحَمَّدٍ عَلِيُّ بْنَ ٱلْحُسَيْنِ

a'adkhulu ya aba muhammadin `aliyyu bna alhusayni

O Abu-Muhammad `Ali ibn al-Husayn, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا ابَا جَعْفَرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ

a'adkhulu ya aba ja`farin muhammadu abna `aliyyin

O Abu-Ja`far Muhammad ibn `Ali, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا ابَا عَبْدِ ٱللَّهِ جَعْفَرُ بْنَ مُحَمَّدٍ

a'adkhulu ya aba `abdillahi ja`faru bna muhammadin

O Abu-`Abdullah Ja`far ibn Muhammad, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ يَا ابَا ٱلْحَسَنِ مُوسَىٰ بْنَ جَعْفَرٍ

a'adkhulu ya mawlaya ya aba alhasani musa bna ja`farin

O my master Abu’l-Hasan Musa ibn Ja`far, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ يَا ابَا جَعْفَرٍ

a'adkhulu ya mawlaya ya aba ja`farin

O my master Abu-Ja`far, may I enter?

اادْخُلُ يَا مَوْلاَيَ مُحَمَّدُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ

a'adkhulu ya mawlaya muhammadu abna `aliyyin

O my master Muhammad ibn `Ali, may I enter?

While entering, you may repeat the following statement four times:

اَللَّهُ اكْبَرُ

allahu akbar

Allah is the Most Great.

About the ziyarah form dedicated to Imam Muhammad al-Jawad (peace be upon him), the three master scholars (Shaykh al-Mufid, al-Shahid, and Muhammad ibn al-Mashhadi) have said the following: You may direct yourself to the tomb of Abu-Ja`far Muhammad ibn `Ali al-Jawad (peace be upon him). When you stop near the tomb, you may say the following words:

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya waliyya allahi

Peace be upon you, O intimate servant of Allah.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حُجَّةَ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya hujjata allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s argument.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نُورَ ٱللَّهِ فِي ظُلُمَاتِ ٱلأَرْضِ

alssalamu `alayka ya nura allahi fi zulumati al-ardi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s light in the darkness of the earth.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا بْنَ رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka yabna rasuli allahi

Peace be upon you, O son of Allah’s Messenger.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ آبَائِكَ

alssalamu `alayka wa `ala aba'ika

Peace be upon you and upon your fathers.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ أَبْنَائِكَ

alssalamu `alayka wa `ala abna'ika

Peace be upon you and upon your descendants.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ أَوْلِيَائِكَ

alssalamu `alayka wa `ala awliya'ika

Peace be upon you and upon your loyalists.

أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ أَقَمْتَ ٱلصَّلاَةَ

ashhadu annaka qad aqamta alssalata

I bear witness that you performed the prayers,

وَآتَيْتَ ٱلزَّكَاةَ

wa atayta alzzakata

defrayed the poor-rate,

وَأَمَرْتَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

wa amarta bilma`rufi

enjoined the right,

وَنَهَيْتَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنْكَرِ

wa nahayta `an almunkari

forbade the wrong,

وَتَلَوْتَ ٱلْكِتَابَ حَقَّ تِلاَوَتِهِ

wa talawta alkitaba haqqa tilawatihi

recited the Book as it should be recited,

وَجَاهَدْتَ فِي ٱللَّهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهِ

wa jahadta fi allahi haqqa jihadihi

strove for Allah as exactly as striving should be,

وَصَبَرْتَ عَلَىٰ ٱلأَذَىٰ فِي جَنْبِهِ

wa sabarta `ala al-adha fi janbihi

and endured harm for His sake

حَتَّىٰ أَتَاكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ

hatta ataka alyaqinu

until death came upon you.

أَتَيْتُكَ زَائِراً

ataytuka za'iran

I have come to you, visiting you,

عَارِفاً بِحَقِّكَ

`arifan bihaqqika

recognizing your right,

مُوَالِياً لأَوْلِيَائِكَ

muwaliyan li'awliya'ika

declaring loyalty to your loyalists,

مُعَادِياً لأَعْدَائِكَ

mu`adiyan lia`da'ika

and incurring the animosity of your enemies;

فَٱشْفَعْ لِي عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ

fashfa` li `inda rabbika

so, (please) intercede for me with Your Lord.

You may then kiss the tomb and put your both cheeks on it. You may then offer the two-unit prayer of ziyarah, after which you may offer any other prayers. You may then prostrate and say the following words:

إِرْحَمْ مَنْ أَسَاءَ وَٱقَتَرَفَ

irham man asa'a waqatarafa

(Please) have mercy upon him who had misbehaved and committed sins,

وَٱسْتَكَانَ وَٱعْتَرَفَ

wastakana wa`tarafa

but he then submitted and confessed.

You may then place your right cheek on the ground and say the following words:

إِنْ كُنْتُ بِئْسَ ٱلْعَبْدُ

in kuntu bi'sa al`abdu

If I am the worst servant (of You),

فَأَنْتَ نِعْمَ ٱلرَّبُّ

fa'anta ni`ma alrrabbu

then You are the All-excellent Lord.

You may then place your left cheek on the ground and say the following words:

عَظُمَ ٱلذَّنْبُ مِنْ عَبْدِكَ

`azuma aldhdhanbu min `abdika

Your servant’s sin has been very flagrant,

فَلْيَحْسُنِ ٱلْعَفْوُ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ

falyahsun al`afwu min `indika

then let Your pardon be very excellent.

يَا كَرِيمُ

ya karimu

O All-generous!

you may then return to the position of prostration and repeat the following word one hundred times:

شُكْراً

shukran

Thanks.

In his book of al-Mazar, Sayyid Ibn Tawus says: You may stop at the tomb of Imam al-Jawad (peace be upon him), kiss it, and say the following words:

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا جَعْفَرٍ

alssalamu `alayka ya aba ja`farin

Peace be upon you, O Abu-Ja`far

مُحَمَّدُ بْنَ عَلِيٍّ

muhammadu bna `aliyyin

Muhammad the son of `Ali,

ٱلْبَرُّ ٱلتَّقِيُّ

albarru alttaqiyyu

the righteous, pious,

ٱلإِمَامُ ٱلْوَفِيُّ

al-imamu alwafiyyu

and faithful leader.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلرَّضِيُّ ٱلزَّكِيُّ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha alrradiyyu alzzakiyyu

Peace be upon you, O pleased and pure.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya waliyya allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s intimate servant.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نَجِيَّ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya najiyya allahi

Peace be upon you, O confidentially talked by Allah.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سَفِيرَ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya safira allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s emissary.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سِرَّ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya sirra allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s secret.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ضِيَاءَ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya diya'a allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s brightness.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا سَنَاءَ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya sana'a allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s brilliance.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا كَلِمَةَ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya kalimata allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s Word.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا رَحْمَةَ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya rahmata allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s mercy.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلنُّوُرُ ٱلسَّاطِعُ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha alnnuru alssati`u

Peace be upon you, O shining light.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْبَدْرُ ٱلطَّالِعُ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha albadru alttali`u

Peace be upon you, O rising full moon.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلطَّيِّبُ مِنَ ٱلطَّيِّبِينَ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha alttayyibu min alttayyibina

Peace be upon you, O pure who is the descendant of the pure ones.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلطَّاهِرُ مِنَ ٱلْمُطَهَّرِينَ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha alttahiru min almutahharina

Peace be upon you, O immaculate who is the descendant of the the immaculate ones.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلآيَةُ ٱلْعُظْمَىٰ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha al-ayatu al`uzma

Peace be upon you, O greatest sign.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْحُجَّةُ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha alhujjatu alkubra

Peace be upon you, O grandest argument.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُ مِنَ ٱلزَّلاَّتِ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha almutahharu min alzzallati

Peace be upon you, O purified from slips.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُنَزَّهُ عَنِ ٱلْمُعْضِلاَتِ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha almunazzahu `an almu`dilati

Peace be upon you, O deemed above unforgivable failings.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلْعَلِيُّ عَنْ نَقْصِ ٱلأَوْصَافِ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha al`aliyyu `an naqsi al-awsafi

Peace be upon you, O raised high against imperfect traits.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا ٱلرَّضِيُّ عِنْدَ ٱلأَشْرَافِ

alssalamu `alayka ayyuha alrradiyyu `inda al-ashrafi

Peace be upon you, O pleased in the sight of the honorable ones.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا عَمُودَ ٱلدِّينَ

alssalamu `alayka ya `amuda alddini

Peace be upon you, O pillar of the religion.

أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ وَلِيُّ ٱللَّهِ

ashhadu annaka waliyyu allahi wa hujjatuhu fi ardihi

I bear witness that you are the intimate servant of Allah,

وَحُجَّتُهُ فِي أَرْضِهِ

wa annaka janbu allahi

the argument of Him in His lands,

وَأَنَّكَ جَنْبُ ٱللَّهِ وَخِيَرَةُ ٱللَّهِ

wa khiyaratu allahi

the side of Allah, the best in the view of Allah,

وَمُسْتَوْدَعُ عِلْمِ ٱللَّهِ وَعِلْمِ ٱلأَنْبِيَاءِ

wa mustawda`u `ilmi allahi wa `ilmi al-anbiya'i

the store of the knowledge of Allah and the knowledge of the Prophets,

وَرُكْنُ ٱلإِيمَانِ وَتَرْجُمَانُ ٱلْقُرْآنِ

wa ruknu al-imani wa tarjumanu alqur'ani

the cornerstone of faith, and the interpreter of the Qur'an.

وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ عَلَىٰ ٱلْحَقِّ وَٱلْهُدَىٰ

wa ashhadu anna man ittaba`aka `ala alhaqqi walhuda

I also bear witness that whoever follows you has been on the right and true guidance

وَأَنَّ مَنْ أَنْكَرَكَ وَنَصَبَ لَكَ ٱلْعَدَاوَةَ

wa anna man ankaraka wa nasaba laka al`adawata

but whoever denies you and incurs your animosity

عَلَىٰ ٱلضَّلاَلَةِ وَٱلرَّدَىٰ

`ala alddalalati walrrada

has been on deviation and perdition.

أَبْرَأُ إِلَىٰ ٱللَّهِ وَإِلَيْكَ مِنْهُمْ فِي ٱلدُّنْيَا وَٱلآخِرَةِ

abra'u ila allahi wa ilayka minhum fi alddunya wal-akhirati

I repudiate these in the presence of Allah and you in this world and in the Hereafter.

وَٱلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ مَا بَقِيتُ وَبَقِيَ ٱللَّيْلُ وَٱلنَّهَارُ

wa alssalamu `alayka ma baqitu wa baqiya allaylu walnnaharu

Peace be upon you as long as I am existent and as long as there are day and night.

Then recite this salawaat (invocation of blessings) upon Imam Mohammed Taqi Jawad (peace be upon him)

اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِهِ

allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa ahli baytihi

O Allah, (please) send blessings upon Muhammad and his Household,

وَصَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ

wa salli `ala muhammadi bni `aliyyin

send blessings upon Muhammad the son of `Ali,

ٱلزَّكِيِّ ٱلتَّقِيِّ

alzzakiyyi alttaqiyyi

the pure, the pious,

وَٱلْبَرِّ ٱلْوَفِيِّ

walbarri alwafiyyi

the righteous, the faithful,

وَٱلْمُهَذَّبِ ٱلنَّقِيِّ

walmuhadhdhabi alnnaqiyyi

the refined, the bright,

هَادِي ٱلأُمَّةِ

hadi al-ummati

the guide of the nation,

وَوَارِثِ ٱلأَئِمَّةِ

wa warithi al-a'immati

the inheritor of the Imams,

وَخَازِنِ ٱلرَّحْمَةِ

wa khazini alrrahmati

the hoarder of mercy,

وَيَنْبُوعِ ٱلْحِكْمَةِ

wa yanbu`i alhikmati

the spring of wisdom,

وَقَائِدِ ٱلْبَرَكَةِ

wa qa'idi albarakati

the leader of blessing,

وَعَدِيلِ ٱلْقُرْآنِ فِي ٱلطَّاعَةِ

wa `adili alqur'ani fi altta`ati

the match of the Qur'an in obedience,

وَوَاحِدِ ٱلأَوْصِيَاءِ فِي ٱلإِخْلاَصِ وَٱلْعِبَادَةِ

wa wahidi al-awsiya'i fi al-ikhlasi wal`ibadati

the distinctive among the Successors in sincerity and worship,

وَحُجَّتِكَ ٱلْعُلْيَا

wa hujjatika al`ulya

Your premier argument,

وَمَثَلِكَ ٱلأَعْلَىٰ

wa mathalika al-a`la

Your highest example,

وَكَلِمَتِكَ ٱلْحُسْنَىٰ

wa kalimatika alhusna

Your most excellent Word,

ٱلدَّاعِي إِلَيْكَ

aldda`i ilayka

the caller to You,

وَٱلدَّالِّ عَلَيْكَ

walddalli `alayka

and the director towards You,

ٱلَّذِي نَصَبْتَهُ عَلَماً لِعِبَادِكَ

alladhi nasabtahu `alaman li`ibadika

whom You have appointed as signpost for Your servants,

وَمُتَرْجِماً لِكِتَابِكَ

wa mutarjiman likitabika

interpreter of Your Book,

وَصَادِعاً بِأَمْرِكَ

wa sadi`an bi'amrika

expounder of Your commands,

وَنَاصِراً لِدِينِكَ

wa nasiran lidinika

supporter of Your religion,

وَحُجَّةً عَلَىٰ خَلْقِكَ

wa hujjatan `ala khalqika

argument against Your creatures,

وَنُوراً تَخْرُقُ بِهِ ٱلظُّلَمَ

wa nuran takhruqu bihi alzzulama

radiance through whom darkness is penetrated,

وَقُدْوَةً تُدْرَكُ بِهَا ٱلْهِدَايَةُ

wa qudwatan tudraku biha alhidayatu

excellent example through whom true guidance is hit,

وَشَفيعاً تُنَالُ بِهِ ٱلْجَنَّةُ

wa shafi`an tunalu bihi aljannatu

and intercessor through whom Paradise is won.

اَللَّهُمَّ وَكَمَا أَخَذَ فِي خُشُوعِهِ لَكَ حَظَّهُ

allahumma wa kama akhadha fi khushu`ihi laka hazzahu

O Allah, just as he took his share of reverence for You

وَٱسْتَوْفَىٰ مِنْ خَشْيَتِكَ نَصِيبَهُ

wastawfa min khashyatika nasibahu

and received completely his portion of fear of You,

فَصَلِّ عَلَيْهِ أَضْعَافَ مَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ وَلِيٍّ

fasalli `alayhi ad`afa ma sallayta `ala waliyyin

so (please) bless him with many folds of blessings that You have ever poured down on an intimate servant of You

ٱرْتَضَيْتَ طَاعَتَهُ

irtadayta ta`atahu

whose obedience to You has been approved of by You

وَقَبِلْتَ خِدْمَتَهُ

wa qabilta khidmatahu

and whose servitude has been admitted by You.

وَبَلِّغْهُ مِنَّا تَحِيَّةً وَسَلاَماً

wa ballighhu minna tahiyyatan wa salaman

Convey to him greetings and salutations from us,

وَآتِنَا فِي مُوَالاَتِهِ مِنْ لَدُنْكَ فَضْلًا وَإِحْسَاناً

wa atina fi muwalatihi min ladunka fadlan wa ihsanan

and give us - from You on account of our loyalty to him - favors, kindness,

وَمَغْفِرَةً وَرِضْوَاناً

wa maghfiratan wa ridwanan

forgiveness, and pleasure.

إِنَّكَ ذُو ٱلْمَنِّ ٱلْقَدِيمِ

innaka dhulmanni alqadimi

You are verily the Lord of eternal favoring

وَٱلصَّفْحِ ٱلْجَمِيلِ

walssafhi aljamili

and nice pardoning.

You may then offer the two-unit prayer of ziyarah and say the supplication, which begins with this statement:

اَللَّهُمَّ انْتَ ٱلرَّبُّ وَانَا ٱلْمَرْبُوبُ…

allahumma anta alrrabbu wa ana almarbubu…

O Allah, You are the Sustainer and I am the sustained…

In Man-la Yadhahrul Faqih, Shaykh al-Saduq has reported the following: When you intend to visit Imam al-Jawad (peace be upon him), you may bathe yourself and put on two clean (and ceremonially pure) pieces of clothes. You may then say the following words:

َللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ

allahumma salli `ala muhammadi abni `aliyyin

O Allah, (please) send blessings upon Muhammad the son of `Ali,

ٱلإِمَامِ ٱلتَّقِيِّ ٱلنَّقِيِّ

al-imami alttaqiyyi alnnaqiyyi

the pious, bright,

ٱلرِّضِيِّ ٱلْمَرْضِيِّ

alrradiyyi almardiyyi

pleasing, and pleased Imam

وَحُجَّتِكَ عَلَىٰ مَنْ فَوْقَ ٱلأَرْضِ

wa hujjatika `ala man fawqa al-ardi

and Your argument against all those who are on the earth

وَمَنْ تَحْتَ ٱلثَّرَىٰ

wa man tahta alththara

and those who are beneath the ground

صَلاَةً كَثِيرَةً

salatan kathiratan

with such blessings that are plentiful,

نَامِيَةً زَاكِيَةً مُبَارَكَةً

namiyatan zakiyatan mubarakatan

ever-increasing, pure, blessed,

مُتَوَاصِلَةً مُتَرَادِفَةً مُتَوَاتِرَةً

mutawasilatan mutaradifatan mutawatiratan

continuous, consecutive, and uninterrupted

كَأَفْضَلِ مَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَىٰ أَحَدٍ مِنْ أَوْلِيَائِكَ

ka'afdali ma sallayta `ala ahadin min awliya'ika

and with the most excellent blessings that You have ever conferred upon any of Your intimate servants.

وَٱلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ

wa alssalamu `alayka ya waliyya allahi

And peace be upon you, O Allah’s most intimate servant.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نُورَ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya nura allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s brightness.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا حُجَّةَ ٱللَّهِ

alssalamu `alayka ya hujjata allahi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s argument.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا إِمَامَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

alssalamu `alayka ya imama almu'minina

Peace be upon you, O leader of the believers,

وَوَارِثَ عِلْمِ ٱلنَّبِيِّينَ

wa waritha `ilmi alnnabiyyina

inheritor of the knowledge of the Prophets,

وَسُلاَلَةَ ٱلْوَصِيِّينَ

wa sulalata alwasiyyina

and descendant of the Prophets’ successors.

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ يَا نُورَ ٱللَّهِ فِي ظُلُمَاتِ ٱلأَرْضِ

alssalamu `alayka ya nura allahi fi zulumati al-ardi

Peace be upon you, O Allah’s light in the darkness of the earth.

أَتَيْتُكَ زَائِراً

ataytuka za'iran

I have come to you, visiting you,

عَارِفاً بِحَقِّكَ

`arifan bihaqqika

recognizing your right,

مُعَادِياً لأَعْدَائِكَ

mu`adiyan li'a`da'ika

incurring the animosity of your enemies,

مُوَالِياً لأَوْلِيَائِكَ

muwaliyan li'awliya'ika

and showing loyalty to your loyalists.

فَٱشْفَعْ لِي عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ

fashfa` li `inda rabbika

So, (please) intercede for me with your Lord.

You may then pray to Almighty Allah to grant you your personal needs.

Another Ziyarah (from Baqiyat al-Salihat)

اَلسَّلاَمُ عَلَىٰ ٱلْبَابِ ٱلأَقْصَدِ

alssalamu `ala albabi al-aqsadi

Peace be upon the most straight door (to true guidance),

وَٱلطَّرِيقِ ٱلأَرْشَدِ

walttariqi al-arshadi

the most upright path,

وَٱلْعَالِمِ ٱلْمُؤَيَّدِ

wal`alimi almu'ayyadi

the Divinely supported knower,

يُنْبُوعِ ٱلْحِكَمِ

yunbu`i alhikami

the spring of wisdoms,

وَمِصْبَاحِ ٱلظُّلَمِ

wa misbahi alzzulami

the lantern in darkness,

سَيِّدِ ٱلْعَرَبِ وَٱلْعَجَمِ

sayyidi al`arabi wal`ajami

the chief of Arabs and non-Arabs,

ٱلْهَادِي إِلَىٰ ٱلرَّشَادِ

alhadi ila alrrashadi

the guide to orthodoxy,

ٱلْمُوَفَّقِ بِٱلتَّأْيِيدِ وَٱلسَّدَادِ

almuwaffaqi biltta'yidi walssadadi

and the granted success by means of support and leading to trueness;

مَوْلاَيَ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ

mawlaya abi ja`farin

my master Abu-Ja`far

مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ ٱلْجَوَادِ

muhammadi bni `aliyyin aljawadi

Muhammad the son of `Ali the Magnanimous.

أَشْهَدُ يَا وَلِيَّ ٱللَّهِ

ashhadu ya waliyya allahi

I bear witness that you are the intimate servant of Allah;

أَنَّكَ أَقَمْتَ ٱلصَّلاَةَ

annaka aqamta alssalata

you performed the prayers,

وَآتَيْتَ ٱلزَّكَاةَ

wa atayta alzzakata

defrayed the poor-rate,

وَأَمَرْتَ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

wa amarta bilma`rufi

enjoined the right,

وَنَهَيْتَ عَنِ ٱلْمُنْكَرِ

wa nahayta `an almunkari

forbade the wrong,

وَجَاهَدْتَ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ حَقَّ جِهَادِهِ

wa jahadta fi sabili allahi haqqa jihadihi

strove in the way of Allah as exactly as strife should be,

وَعَبَدْتَ ٱللَّهَ مُخْلِصاً حَتَّىٰ أَتَاكَ ٱلْيَقِينُ

wa `abadta allaha mukhlisan hatta ataka alyaqinu

and served Allah sincerely until death came upon you.

فَعِشْتَ سَعِيداً

fa`ishta sa`idan

So, you lived happily

وَمَضَيْتَ شَهَِيداً

wa madayta shahaidan

and passed away as martyr.

يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ مَعَكُمْ

ya laytani kuntu ma`akum

Would that I were with you,

فَأَفُوزَ فَوْزاً عَظِيماً

fa'afuza fawzan `aziman

then should I achieve a great success.

وَرَحْمَةُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ

wa rahmatu allahi wa barakatuhu

Allah’s mercy and blessings be upon you.

You may then kiss the blessed soil (of the tomb) and place your right cheek on it.

You may then offer the two-unit prayer of ziyarah after which you may pray Almighty Allah for any thing you want.

Dua After Ziyarah

اَللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ ٱلرَّبُّ وَأَنَا ٱلْمَرْبُوبُ

allahumma anta alrrabbu wa ana almarbubu

O Allah, You are the Sustainer and I am the sustained.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْخَالِقُ وَأَنَا ٱلْمَخْلُوقُ

wa anta alkhaliqu wa ana almakhluqu

You are the Creator and I am the created.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْمَالِكُ وَأَنَا ٱلْمَمْلُوكُ

wa anta almaliku wa ana almamluku

You are the Owner and I am the owned.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْمُعْطِي وَأَنَا ٱلسَّائِلُ

wa anta almu`ti wa ana alssa'ilu

You are the Granter and I am the beggar.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلرَّازِقُ وَأَنَا ٱلْمَرْزُوقُ

wa anta alrraziqu wa ana almarzuqu

You are the Provider with sustenance and I am the receiver of sustenance.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْقَادِرُ وَأَنَا ٱلْعَاجِزُ

wa anta alqadiru wa ana al`ajizu

You are the All-powerful and I am the powerless.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْقَوِيُّ وَأَنَا ٱلضَّعِيفُ

wa anta alqawiyyu wa ana aldda`ifu

You are the All-forceful and I am the weak.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْمُغِيثُ وَأَنَا ٱلْمُسْتَغِيثُ

wa anta almughithu wa ana almustaghithu

You are the Aide and I am the seeker of aid.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلدَّائِمُ وَأَنَا ٱلزَّائِلُ

wa anta aldda'imu wa ana alzza'ilu

You are the Everlasting and I am destined to die.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْكَبِيرُ وَأَنَا ٱلْحَقِيرُ

wa anta alkabiru wa ana alhaqiru

You are the Significant and I am the trivial.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْعَظِيمُ وَأَنَا ٱلصَّغِيرُ

wa anta al`azimu wa ana alssaghiru

You are the Great and I am the tiny.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْمَوْلَىٰ وَأَنَا ٱلْعَبْدُ

wa anta almawla wa ana al`abdu

You are the Lord and I am the slave.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْعَزِيزُ وَأَنَا ٱلذَّلِيلُ

wa anta al`azizu wa ana aldhdhalilu

You are the Almighty and I am the humble.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلرَّفِيعُ وَأَنَا ٱلْوَضِيعُ

wa anta alrrafi`u wa ana alwadi`u

You are the Elevated and I am the meek.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْمُدَبِّرُ وَا نَا ٱلْمُدَبَّرُ

wa anta almudabbiru wa ana almudabbaru

You are the Manager and I am managed.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْبَاقِي وَأَنَا ٱلْفَانِي

wa anta albaqi wa ana alfani

You are the Eternal and I am mortal.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلدَّيَّانُ وَأَنَا ٱلْمُدَانُ

wa anta alddayyanu wa ana almudanu

You are the Judge and I am judged.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْبَاعِثُ وَأَنَا ٱلْمَبْعُوثُ

wa anta alba`ithu wa ana almab`uthu

You are the Resurrector and I am resurrected.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْغَنِيُّ وَأَنَا ٱلْفَقِيرُ

wa anta alghaniyyu wa ana alfaqiru

You are the Rich and I am the poor.

وَأَنْتَ ٱلْحَيُّ وَأَنَا ٱلْمَيِّتُ

wa anta alhayyu wa ana almayyitu

You are the Ever-living and I am subjected to death.

تَجِدُ مَنْ تُعَذِّبُ يَا رَبِّ غَيْرِي

tajidu man tu`adhdhibu ya rabbi ghayri

You, O my Lord, can find someone to torment other than me

وَلاَ أَجِدُ مَنْ يَرْحَمُنِي غَيْرُكَ

wa la ajidu man yarhamuni ghayruka

but I cannot find anyone to have mercy on me other than You.

اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

O Allah, (please) send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

وَقَرِّبْ فَرَجَهُمْ

wa qarrib farajahum

hasten their Relief,

وَٱرْحَمْ ذُلِّي بَيْنَ يَدَيْكَ

warham dhulli bayna yadayka

and have mercy on my humiliation before You,

وَتَضَرُّعِي إِلَيْكَ

wa tadarru`i ilayka

my imploration to You,

وَوَحْشَتِي مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ

wa wahshati min alnnasi

my disassociation from people,

وَأُنْسِي بِكَ يَا كَرِيمُ

wa unsi bika ya karimu

and my entertainment with You, O All-generous.

ثُمَّ تَصَدَّقْ عَلَيَّ فِي هٰذِهِ ٱلسَّاعَةِ

thumma tasaddaq `alayya fi hadhihi alssa`ati

Then, (please) endue me at this very hour

بِرَحْمَةٍ مِنْ عِنْدِكَ تُهَدِّئُ بِهَا قَلْبِي

birahmatin min `indika tuhaddi'u biha qalbi

with mercy from You by which You tranquilize my heart,

وَتَجْمَعُ بِهَا أَمْرِي

wa tajma`u biha amri

bring together my affairs,

وَتَلُمُّ بِهَا شَعَثِي

wa talummu biha sha`athi

reunite my scattering,

وَتُبَيِّضُ بِهَا وَجْهِي

wa tubayyidu biha wajhi

whiten my face,

وَتُكْرِمُ بِهَا مَقَامِي

wa tukrimu biha maqami

confer honor on my status,

وَتَحُطُّ بِهَا عَنِّي وِزْرِي

wa tahuttu biha `anni wizri

relieve me from my burdens,

وَتَغْفِرُ بِهَا مَا مَضَىٰ مِنْ ذُنُوبِي

wa taghfiru biha ma mada min dhunubi

forgive my past sins,

وَتَعْصِمُنِي فِي مَا بَقِيَ مِنْ عُمْرِي

wa ta`simuni fi ma baqiya min `umri

protect me against sinning in the rest of my lifetime,

وَتَسْتَعْمِلُنِي فِي ذٰلِكَ كُلِّهِ

wa tasta`miluni fi dhalika kullihi

employ me in my entire lifetime

بِطَاعَتِكَ وَمَا يُرْضِيكَ عَنِّي

bita`atika wa ma yurdika `anni

in acts of obedience to You and acts that bring about Your pleasure,

وَتَخْتِمُ عَمَلِي بِأَحْسَنِهِ

wa takhtimu `amali bi'ahsanihi

seal my deeds with the best of them,

وَتَجْعَلُ لِي ثَوَابَهُ ٱلْجَنَّةَ

wa taj`alu li thawabahu aljannata

decide Paradise to be my reward for that,

وَتَسْلُكُ بِي سَبِيلَ ٱلصَّالِحِينَ

wa tasluku bi sabila alssalihina

lead me to the path of the righteous,

وَتُعِينُنِي عَلَىٰ صَالِحِ مَا أَعْطَيْتَنِي

wa tu`inuni `ala salihi ma a`taytani

help me do well with the virtuous of what You have given me

كَمَا أَعَنْتَ ٱلصَّالِحِينَ عَلَىٰ صَالِحِ مَا أَعْطَيْتَهُمْ

kama a`anta alssalihina `ala salihi ma a`taytahum

in the same way as You have helped the righteous ones do well with what You have given them,

وَلاَ تَنْزَعْ مِنِّي صَالِحاً أَعْطَيْتِنِيهِ أَبَداً

wa la tanza` minni salihan a`taytinihi abadan

never deprive me of any virtuous thing that You have given me,

وَلاَ تَرُدَّنِي فِي سُوءٍ ٱسْتَنْقَذْتَنِي مِنْهُ أَبَداً

wa la taruddani fi su'in istanqadhtani minhu abadan

never send me back to a wicked matter from which You have saved me,

وَلاَ تُشْمِتْ بِي عَدُوّاً وَلاَ حَاسِداً أَبَداً

wa la tushmit bi `aduwwan wa la hasidan abadan

never make my enemy or one who envies me gloat at my misfortune,

وَلاَ تَكِلْنِي إِلَىٰ نَفْسِي طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ أَبَداً

wa la takilni ila nafsi tarfata `aynin abadan

and never leave me alone with my own affairs even for a winking of an eye

وَلاَ أَقَلَّ مِنْ ذٰلِكَ وَلاَ أَكْثَرَ

wa la aqalla min dhalika wa la akthara

or less or more than that.

يَا رَبَّ ٱلْعَالَمِينَ

ya rabba al`alamina

O Lord of the worlds!

اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

allahumma salli `ala muhammadin wa ali muhammadin

O Allah, (please) send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

وَأَرِنِي ٱلْحَقَّ حَقّاً فَأَتَّبِعَهُ

wa arini alhaqqa haqqan fa'attabi`ahu

show the right as it is in reality so that I will follow it

وَٱلْبَاطِلَ بَاطِلاً فَأَجْتَنِبَهُ

walbatila batilan fa'ajtanibahu

and the wrong as it is in reality so that I will shun it,

وَلاَ تَجْعَلْهُ عَلَيَّ مُتَشَابِهاً

wa la taj`alhu `alayya mutashabihan

never confuse the right and the wrong for me;

فَأَتَّبِعَ هَوَايَ بِغَيْرِ هُدىًٰ مِنْكَ

fa'attabi`a hawaya bighayri hudan minka

lest I will follow my own desires without finding true guidance from You.

وَٱجْعَلْ هَوَايَ تَبَعاً لِطَاعَتِكَ

waj`al hawaya taba`an lita`atika

And (please) cause all my desires to follow the obedience to You,

وَخُذْ رِضَا نَفْسِكَ مِنْ نَفْسِي

wa khudh rida nafsika min nafsi

take the pleasure of You from the pleasure of myself,

وَٱهْدِنِي لِمَا ٱخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ بِإِذْنِكَ

wahdini lima ikhtulifa fihi min alhaqqi bi'idhnika

and guide me to the right about which disagreement has taken place by permission of You;

إِنَّكَ تَهْدِي مَنْ تَشَاءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ

innaka tahdi man tasha'u ila siratin mustaqimin

verily, You guide whomever You wish to a straight path.

You may then pray to Almighty Allah for your personal requests and they shall be granted, Allah willing.
