Taweez against Evil Eyes

Text and Translation

To fend off the evil eye, it is reported to recite verse 51 of Surah al-Qalam (68):

وَاِنْ يَّكَادُ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا لَيُزْلِقُوْنَكَ بِاَبْصَارِهِمْ لَمَّا سَمِعُوْا الذِّكْرَ وَيَقُوْلُوْنَ اِنَّهُ لَمَجْنُوْنٌ

WA IY YAKAADUL LAZEENA KAFAROO LA-YUZLIQOONAKA BI-ABSAARIHIM LAMMAA SAMI-U'Z ZIKRA WA YAQOOLOONA INNAHU LA-MAJNOON

And indeed those who disbelieve would almost make you slip with their eyes when they hear the Reminder, and they say, "Indeed he is mad."

Imam al-Sadiq (a) said: whenever you fear being affected by an evil eye, or fear affecting others with it, repeat the following three times:

مَا شَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ لَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ الْعَلِىِّ الْعَظِيْمِ

MAA SHAAA-AL LAAHO LAA QUWWATA ILLAA BILLAAHIL A'LIYYIL A'ZEEM

What Allah wills comes to be; there is no strength except with Allah, the Most High, the All-magnificent.

It is also reported that whoever wears an attractive garment should recite [Surah al-Falaq](A117) and [Surah al-Nas](A118) before leaving his house; if he does, nothing will harm him, Allah willing. To fend off the evil eye one may also raise a hand to the level of the face, recite [Surah al-Faatehah](A5), Surah al-Falaq, and Surah al-Nas, and pass the hands over the forelocks.

The following supplicatory amulet may be said to fend off the evil eye:

اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ مَطَرٍ حَابِسٍ وَ حَجَرٍ يَّابِسٍ وَّ لَيْلٍ دَامِسٍ وَّ رَطْبٍ وَّ يَابِسٍ

ALLAAHUMMA RABBA MATARIN HAABISIW WA HAJARIY YAABISIW WA LAYLIN DAAMISIW WA RATBIW WA YAABIS

O Allah, Lord of withheld rain, of dry stone, of pitch-dark night, of what is moist and what is dry,

رُدَّ عَيْنَ الْعَايِنِ عَلَيْهِ فِىْ كَبِدِهِ وَ نَحْرِهِ وَ مَالِهِ

RUDDA A'YNAL A'AAINI A'LAYHI FEE KABIDIHI WA NAHRIHI WA MAALIH

turn back the eye of whoever casts an evil eye upon himself, in his own liver, his own throat, and his own wealth,

فَارْجِعِ الْبَصَرَ هَلْ تَرٰى مِنْ فُطُوْرٍ ثُمَّ ارْجِعِ الْبَصَرَ كَرَّتَيْنِ يَنْقَلِبْ اِلَيْكَ الْبَصَرُ خَاسِئًا وَّ هُوَ حَسِيْرٌ

FARJI-I'L BASARA HAL TARAA MIN FUTOOR THUMMAR JI-I'L BASARA KARRATAYNI YANQALIB ILAYKAL BASARU KHAASI-AW WA HUWA HASEER

so look again — do you see any flaw? Then look again, twice more; your sight will turn back to you humbled and worn out.

Another supplicatory amulet against the evil eye:

اَللّٰهُمَّ ذَا السُّلْطَانِ الْعَظِيْمِ وَالْمَنِّ الْقَدِيْمِ وَالْوَجْهِ الْكَرِيْمِ ذَا الْكَلِمَاتِ التَّآمَّاتِ وَالدَّعَوَاتِ الْمُسْتَجَابَاتِ

ALLAAHUMMA ZAS SULTAANIL A'ZEEM WAL MANNIL QADEEM WAL WAJHIL KAREEM ZAL KALIMAATIT TAAA-MMAAT WAD DA'AWAATIL MUSTAJAABAAT

O Allah, Possessor of the Great Dominion, the Ancient Bounty, and the Noble Countenance; Possessor of the Perfect Words and the Answered Supplications,

عَافِ فُلَانًا مِّنْ اَنْفُسِ الْجِنِّ وَ اَعْيُنِ الْاِنْسِ

A'AAFI FULAANAM MIN ANFUSIL JINNI WA A'YUNIL INS

grant so-and-so well-being from the souls of the jinn and the eyes of mankind.

Having applied this amulet to Imam al-Hasan and Imam al-Husayn (a), the Holy Prophet (s) told his companions, "Apply this amulet to your children."

To protect animals and other property from the evil eye, Imam Ali (a) advised this amulet:

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الْعَظِيْمِ عَبَسَ عَابِسٍ وَّ شَهَابَ قَابِسٍ حَجَرَ يَابِسٍ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM BISMIL LAAHIL A'ZEEM A'BASA A'ABISIW WA SHIHAABA QAABISIN HAJARA YAABIS

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful; in the Name of Allah, the All-magnificent — the frown of a frowner, the flame of a firebrand, the dry stone,

رَدَدْتُ عَيْنَ الْعَايِنِ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ رَّاۤءْسِهِ اِلٰى قَدَمَيْهِ اَخَذَ عَيْنَاهُ قَابِضٌ بِكَلَاِهِ وَ عَلٰى جَارِهِ وَاَقَارِبِهِ

RADADTU A'YNAL A'AAINI A'LAYHI MIR RA-SIHI ILAA QADAMAYHI AKHAZA A'YNAAHU QAABIDUM BI-KALAA-IHI WA A'LAA JAARIHI WA AQAARIBIH

I turn back the eye of whoever casts an evil eye, upon himself, from his head to his feet — his own eyes are seized by one who withholds it — and upon his neighbor and his relatives,

جِلْدُهُ دَقِيْقٌ وَّ دَمُهُ رَقِيْقٌ وَ بَابُ الْمَكْرُوْهِ تَلِيْقُ

JILDUHU DAQEEQUW WA DAMUHU RAQEEQUW WA BAABUL MAKROOHI TALEEQ

his skin is thin, his blood is thin, and the door of misfortune suits him,

فَارْجِعِ الْبَصَرَ هَلْ تَرٰى مِنْ فُطُوْرٍ ثُمَّ ارْجِعِ الْبَصَرَ كَرَّتَيْنِ يَنْقَلِبْ اِلَيْكَ الْبَصَرُ خَاسِئًا وَّ هُوَ حَسِيْرٌ

FARJI-I'L BASARA HAL TARAA MIN FUTOOR THUMMAR JI-I'L BASARA KARRATAYNI YANQALIB ILAYKAL BASARU KHAASI-AW WA HUWA HASEER

so look again — do you see any flaw? Then look again, twice more; your sight will turn back to you humbled and worn out.
