SUPPLICATIONS AFTER THE ZIYARAH

Sayyid Ibn Tawus has stated that it is recommended to say the following supplicatory prayer immediately after performing the rites of visitation to the Holy Imams (‘a):

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنْ كَانَتْ ذُنُوْبِيْ قَدْ اَخْلَقَتْ وَجْهِيْ عِنْدَكَ وَ حَجَبَتْ دُعَاۤئِيْ عَنْكَ وَ حَالَتْ بَيْنِيْ وَ بَيْنَكَ فَاَسْاَلُكَ اَنْ تُقْبِلَ عَلَيَّ بِوَجْهِكَ الْكَرِيْمِ وَ تَنْشُرَ عَلَيَّ رَحْمَتَكَ وَ تُنَزِّلَ عَلَيَّ بَرَكَاتِكَ وَ اِنْ كَانَتْ قَدْ مَنَعَتْ اَنْ تَرْفَعَ لِيۤ اِلَيْكَ صَوْتًا اَوْ تَغْفِرَ لِيْ ذَنْبًا اَوْ تَتَجَاوَزَ عَنْ خَطِيْئَةٍ مُهْلِكَةٍ فَهَاۤ اَنَا ذَا مُسْتَجِيْرٌ بِكَرَمِ وَجْهِكَ وَ عِزِّ جَلَالِكَ مُتَوَسِّلٌ اِلَيْكَ مُتَقَرِّبٌ اِلَيْكَ بِاَحَبِّ خَلْقِكَ اِلَيْكَ وَ اَكْرَمِهِمْ عَلَيْكَ وَ اَوْلَاهُمْ بِكَ وَ اَطْوَعِهِمْ لَكَ وَ اَعْظَمِهِمْ مَنْزِلَةً وَ مَكَانًا عِنْدَكَ مُحَمَّدٍ وَ بِعِتْرَتِهِ الطَّاهِرِيْنَ الْاَئِمَّةِ الْهُدَاةِ الْمَهْدِيِّيْنَ الَّذِيْنَ فَرَضْتَ عَلٰى خَلْقِكَ طَاعَتَهُمْ وَ اَمَرْتَ بِمَوَدَّتِهِمْ وَ جَعَلْتَهُمْ وُلَاةَ الْاَمْرِ مِنْ بَعْدِ رَسُوْلِكَ صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ اٰلِهِ يَا مُذِلَّ كُلِّ جَبَّارٍ عَنِيْدٍ وَ يَا مُعِزَّ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ بَلَغَ مَجْهُوْدِيْ فَهَبْ لِيْ نَفْسِيَ السَّاعَةَ وَ رَحْمَةً مِنْكَ تَمُنُّ بِهَا عَلَيَّ يَاۤ اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ.

ALLAAHUMMA IN KAANAT ZUNOOBEE QAD AKHLAQAT WAJHEE I'NDAKA WA HAJABAT DU'AA-EE A'NKA WA HAALAT BAYNEE WA BAYNAKA FA-AS-ALUKA AN TUQBILA A'LAYYA BIWAJHIKAL KAREEMI WA TANSHURA A'LAYYA RAHMATAKA WA TUNAZZILA A'LAYYA BARAKAATIKA WA IN KAANAT QAD MANA'AT AN TARFA'A LEE ILAYKA SAWTAN AW TAGHFIRA LEE ZANBAN AW TATAJAAWAZA A'N KHATEE-ATIN MUHLIKATIN FAHAA ANAA ZAA MUSTAJEERUN BIKARAMI WAJHIKA WA I'ZZI JALAALIKA MUTAWASSILUN ILAYKA MUTAQARRIBUN ILAYKA BI-AHABBI KHALQIKA ILAYKA WA AKRAMIHIM A'LAYKA WA AWLAAHUM BIKA WA ATWA'IHIM LAKA WA A'ZAMIHIM MANZILATAN WA MAKAANAN I'NDAKA MUHAMMADIN WA BI'ITRATIHIT TAAHIREENAL A-IMMATIL HUDAATIL MAHDIYYEENAL LAZEENA FARAZTA A'LAA KHALQIKA TAA'ATAHUM WA AMARTA BIMAWADDATIHIM WA JA'ALTAHUM WULAATAL AMRI MIN BA'DI RASOOLIKA SALLAL LAAHU A'LAYHI WA AALIHI YAA MUZILLA KULLI JABBAARIN A'NEEDIN WA YAA MU'IZZAL MU'MINEENA BALAGHA MAJHOODEE FAHAB LEE NAFSIYAS SAA'ATA WA RAHMATAN MINKA TAMUNNU BIHAA A'LAYYA YAA ARHAMAR RAAHIMEEN.

O Allah, if my sins have caused my face to be tattered in Your view, my prayers to be screened from You, and put a barrier between You and me, then I beseech You to come to me with Your noble Face, to spread Your mercy upon me, and to pour down Your benedictions on me. And if my sins have impeded from raising my voice to You, impeded form forgiving any of my sins, or overlooking any of my destructive fault, then, here I am seeking shelter with the nobleness of Your Face and the dignity of Your majesty; and (here I am) begging You and seeking nearness to You through the most beloved of Your creatures to You, the most honorable with You, the nearest to You, the most obedient to You, and the owners of the greatest standing and position with You; namely, Muhammad and his immaculate descendants, the Imams, the guide and well-guided, the obedience to whom has been imposed by You on Your creatures, the love for whom has been ordered by You, and whom You have made the men in authority after Your Messenger, Allah's blessings be upon him and his Household. O He Who humiliates every obstinate tyrant! O He Who grants dignity to the faithful believers! I have exerted all my efforts; so, (please) release me at this very moment and grant me mercy from You that You may endow me, O most merciful of all those who show mercy.

You may now kiss the holy tomb, put your two cheeks on it, and say the following words:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنَّ هٰذَا مَشْهَدٌ لَا يَرْجُوْ مَنْ فَاتَتْهُ فِيْهِ رَحْمَتُكَ اَنْ يَّنَالَهَا فِي غَيْرِهٖ وَ لَاۤ اَحَدٌ اَشْقٰى مِنِ امْرِئٍ قَصَدَهٗ مُؤَمِّلًا فَاٰبَ عَنْهُ خَاۤئِبًا اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّيۤ اَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ الْاِيَابِ وَ خَيْبَةِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ وَ الْمُنَاقَشَةِ عِنْدَ الْحِسَابِ وَ حَاشَاكَ يَا رَبِّ اَنْ تَقْرِنَ طَاعَةَ وَلِيِّكَ بِطَاعَتِكَ وَ مُوَالَاتَهٗ بِمُوَالَاتِكَ وَ مَعْصِيَتَهٗ بِمَعْصِيَتِكَ ثُمَّ تُؤْيِسَ زَاۤئِرَهٗ وَ الْمُتَحَمِّلَ مِنْ بُعْدِ الْبِلَادِ اِلٰى قَبْرِهٖ وَ عِزَّتِكَ يَا رَبِّ لَا يَنْعَقِدُ عَلٰى ذَالِكَ ضَمِيْرِيْ اِذْ كَانَتِ الْقُلُوْبُ اِلَيْكَ بِالْجَمِيْلِ تُشِيْرُ

ALLAAHUMMA INNA HAAZAA MASHHADUN LAA YARJOO MAN FAATATHU FEEHI RAHMATUKA AN YANAALAHAA FEE GHAYRIHEE WA LAA AHADUN ASHQAA MINIMRI-IN QASADAHOO MU-AMMILAN FAABA A'NHU KHAA-IBAN ALLAAHUMMA INNEE A'OOZU BIKA MIN SHARRIL IYAABI WA KHAYBATIL MUNQALABI WAL MUNAAQASHATI I'NDAL HISAABI WA HAASHAAKA YAA RABBI AN TAQRINA TAA'ATA WALIYYIKA BITAA'ATIKA WA MUWAALAATAHOO BIMUWAALAATIKA WA MA'SIYATAHOO BIMA'SIYATIKA SUMMA TU'YISA ZAA-IRAHOO WAL MUTAHAMMILA MIN BU'DIL BILAADI ILAA QABRIHEE WA I'ZZATIKA YAA RABBI LAA YAN'AQIDU A'LAA ZAALIKA ZAMEEREE IZ KAANATIL QULOOBU ILAYKA BIL JAMEELI TUSHEER

O Allah, this is verily a place wherein one who misses Your mercy must never expect to find it elsewhere. None can be more miserable than one who visits this place, bearing hope, but leaves it with disappointment. O Allah, I do seek Your protection against evil return, hopeless retirement, and hard interrogation when I am called to account. It is too far from You, O my Lord, that after You matched the obedience to Your (visited) representative to the obedience to You, the loyalty to him to the loyalty to You, and the disobedience to him to the disobedience to You, You may then shock with despair one who has visited him and who has undergone remoteness from homeland to come to his grave! By Your Honor, O my Lord, I swear; my conscience can never even think of so, because all hearts always have excellent ideas about You.

You may now offer the prayer of ziyarah. If you intend to bid farewell to the visited holy person and leave, you may say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ يَا اَهْلَ بَيْتِ النُّبُوَّةِ وَ مَعْدِنَ الرِّسَالَةِ سَلَامَ مُوَدِّعٍ لَا سَئِمٍ وَ لَا قَالٍ وَ رَحْمَةُ اللّٰهِ وَ بَرَكَاتُهٗ.

ASSALAAMU A'LAYKUM YAA AHLA BAYTIN NUBUWWATI WA MA'DINAR RISAALATI SALAAMA MUWADDI'IN LAA SA-IMIN WA LAA QAALIN WA RAHMATUL LAAHI WA BARAKAATUH.

Peace be upon you all, O household of prophethood and essence of the (divine) Message. I offer you the salutation of one who has to bid farewell to you although he is neither bored with you nor tired of you. Allah's mercy and blessings be upon you.

Shaykh al-Mufid has also mentioned these words, but he added: After the statement, you may say the following words:

يَا وَلِيَّ اللّٰهِ اِنَّ بَيْنِيْ وَ بَيْنَ اللّٰهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ ذُنُوْبًا لَا يَاْتِيْ عَلَيْهَاۤ اِلَّا رِضَاكَ فَبِحَقِّ مَنِ ائْتَمَنَكَ عَلٰى سِرِّهٖ وَ اسْتَرْعَاكَ اَمْرَ خَلْقِهٖ وَ قَرَنَ طَاعَتَكَ بِطَاعَتِهٖ وَ مُوَالَاتَكَ بِمُوَالَاتِهٖ تَوَلَّ صَلَاحَ حَالِى مَعَ اللّٰهِ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ وَ اجْعَلْ حَظِّيْ مِنْ زِيَارَتِكَ تَخْلِيْطِيْ بِخَالِصِيْ زُوَّارِكَ الَّذِيْنَ تَسْاَلُ اللّٰهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فِي عِتْقِ رِقَابِهِمْ وَ تَرْغَبُ اِلَيْهِ فِيْ حُسْنِ ثَوَابِهِمْ وَ هَاۤ اَنَا الْيَوْمَ بِقَبْرِكَ لَاۤئِذٌ وَ بِحُسْنِ دِفَاعِكَ عَنِّيْ عَاۤئِذٌ فَتَلَافَنِيْ يَا مَوْلَايَ وَ اَدْرِكْنِيْ وَ اَسْاَلِ اللّٰهَ عَزَّ وَ جَلَّ فِيۤ اَمْرِيْ فَاِنَّ لَكَ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ مَقَامًا كَرِيْمًا وَ جَاهًا عَظِيْمًا صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْكَ وَ سَلَّمَ تَسْلِيْمًا.

YAA WALIYYAL LAAHI INNA BAYNEE WA BAYNAL LAAHI A'ZZA WA JALLA ZUNOOBAN LAA YA'TEE A'LAYHAA ILLAA RIZAAKA FABIHAQQI MANITAMANAKA A'LAA SIRRIHEE WASTAR'AAKA AMRA KHALQIHEE WA QARANA TAA'ATAKA BITAA'ATIHEE WA MUWAALAATAKA BIMUWAALAATIHEE TAWALLA SALAAHA HAALEE MA'AL LAAHI A'ZZA WA JALLA WAJ'AL HAZZEE MIN ZIYAARATIKA TAKHLEETEE BIKHAALISEE ZUWWAARIKAL LAZEENA TAS-ALUL LAAHA A'ZZA WA JALLA FEE I'TQI RIQAABIHIM WA TARGHABU ILAYHI FEE HUSNI SAWAABIHIM WA HAA ANAL YAWMA BIQABRIKA LAA-IZUN WA BIHUSNI DIFAA'IKA A'NNEE A'A-IZUN FATALAAFANEE YAA MAWLAAYA WA ADRIKNEE WA AS-ALIL LAAHA A'ZZA WA JALLA FEE AMREE FA-INNA LAKA I'NDAL LAAHI MAQAAMAN KAREEMAN WA JAAHAN A'ZEEMAN SALLAL LAAHU A'LAYKA WA SALLAMA TASLEEMAA.

O representative of Allah, there are sins that I have committed against Allah and nothing can mend them except winning your pleasure. So, I ask you in the name of Him Who has entrusted you with His secret, Who has commended you the affairs of His creation, and Who has matched the obedience to you to the obedience to Him and the loyalty to you to the loyalty to Him, to be in charge of setting aright my relationship with Allah the Almighty and All-majestic, to decide my share of my visit to you to be that you link me to the elite visitors of you whom you ask Allah the Almighty and All-majestic to set free (from punishment) and whom you beg Him to grant excellent rewards. Here I am now seeking refuge in your tomb and seeking the protection of your excellent defense of me. So, O my master, succor me, help me, and ask Allah the Almighty and All-majestic about my condition. Verily, you enjoy an honorable standing with Allah as well as a great esteem. May Allah bless you and endue you with thorough benediction.

A visitor of any of the holy shrines, or any suppliant wherever he may be and whatever prayer he may say, is highly recommended to begin with praying Almighty Allah for the good of Imam al-Mahdi, Almighty Allah’s argument in this age and the patron of the divine mission. Although this issue is of great importance and brings about many significant advantages, it seems unsuitable to refer to this importance or mention these advantages in this place.

However, Shaykh al-Nuri, in Chapter Ten of his book of al-Najm al-Thaqib, has discussed this issue in details and mentioned some supplications in this regard. It is thus recommended to refer to this chapter. The briefest supplication in this connection has been previously cited in this book within the recommended acts at the twenty-third night of Ramazan. It is the following supplication:

اَللّٰهُمَّ كُنْ لِوَلِيِّكَ الْحُجَّةِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ صَلَوَاتُكَ عَلَيْهِ وَعَلٰى اٰبَاۤئِه فِىْ هٰذِهِ السَّاعَةِ وَ فِىْ كُلِّ سَاعَةٍ وَلِيًّا وَّ حَافِظًا وَّ قَاۤئِدًا وَّ نَاصِرًا وَّ دَلِيْلًا وَّ عَيْنًا حَتّٰى تُسْكِنَهٗ اَرْضَكَ طَوْعًا وَتُمَتِّعَهٗ فِيْهَا طَوِيْلًا.

ALLAAHUMMA KUN LIWALIYYIKAL HUJJATI BNIL HASANI SALAWAATUKA A'LAYHI WA'ALAA AABAA-IH FEE HAAZIHIS SAA'ATI WA FEE KULLI SAA'ATIN WALIYYAN WA HAAFIZAN WA QAA-IDAN WA NAASIRAN WA DALEELAN WA A'YNAN HATTAA TUSKINAHOO ARZAKA TAW'AN WATUMATTI'AHOO FEEHAA TAWEELAA.

O Allah, (please) be for Your representative, al-Hujjah the son of al-Hasan, Your blessings be on him and on his forefathers, now and at all times protector, guardian, leader, helper, guide, and watcher so that You shall allow him to prevail on Your lands willingly and You shall make him enjoy it for a long time.

Within the etiquettes of visiting Imam al-Husayn (‘a), I have mentioned another supplication that can be said at all of the holy shrines. The supplication begins with the following statement:

اَللّٰهُمَّ قَدْ تَرَيٰ مَكَانِيْ وَتَسْمَعُ كَلَامِيْ...

ALLAAHUMMA QAD TARAYAA MAKAANEE WATASMA'U KALAAMEE...

O Allah, You do see my place, hear my words...
