Recommended Rites of Friday Night (Shab-e-Jumu'ah)

Text and Translation

Imam Zainul Abedeen (as) says, “Supplication removes afflictions, those that have descended and those which have not yet descended.”

In the last part of Dua-e-Kumayl by Ameerul Momeneen Ali Ibne Abi Talib (a.s.) we find the sentence, “Forgive the one whose owns nothing but supplication.”

By grace of Allah, we have been bestowed supplications from the fourteen infallibles for all occasions, time, place, need etc.

There is great emphasis on the place of supplication for the acceptance of duas. For example, the acceptance of dua is higher in mosques and places of worship like the shrine of Imam Husain (a.s.) and those of other Imams (a.s.). Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says “Allah has specified lands where Duas are accepted and the Holy Shrine of Imam Husain (a.s.) is one of them.” It is also recommended to recite supplication in congregation to increase the chances of its acceptance.

In the same way, Imams (a.s.) have recommended special times when the supplications are accepted. For instance, at the time of Morning Prayer, at the time of namaze shab, on the day of Friday and on Thursday – the eve of Friday or Shabe Jumuah.

Abu Abdillah, Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says, “The sun has not arisen on a day better than Friday. When the birds of the sky meet each other on this day, they greet themselves saying. ‘what a good day it is!’”

Imam Baqir (a.s.), while emphasising the importance of Shabe Jumuah says,

“Throughout this night, Allah calls out

– is there any believing servant who calls upon Me until dawn so that I will grant his worldly and spiritual desires?

– Is there any believing servant who repents from his sins before dawn so that I will forgive him?

– Is there any believing servant whose sustenance is meager and asks Me to increase it before dawn so that I will increase it?

– Is there any ailing, believing servant who asks Me before dawn to heal him so that I will cure him?

– Is there any imprisoned servant who asks Me before dawn to free him so that I will free him from prison?

– Is there any oppressed believing servant who asks Me before dawn to extract his right from an oppressor so that I will help him and restore his right?”

When the children of Hazrat Yaqoob (a.s.) requested their father to seek forgiveness for them from Allah, Hazrat Yaqoob (a.s.) said, “I will seek forgiveness for you from my Lord.” In the tafseer of this verse, Imam Sadiq (a.s.) said that Hazrat Yaqoob (a.s.) delayed seeking forgiveness until the dawn on Shabe Jumuah.

The above verse and tradition while highlighting the significance of this night for seeking forgiveness also draws attention to the importance of seeking the medium (waseelah or tawassul) of the prophet or Imam while seeking the forgiveness of Allah.

There are several such incidents and traditions which underscore the value of Shabe Jumuah. Our scholars, quoting from traditions recommend three focal points to be kept in mind on this night – firstly one must remember death. Secondly, one must remember Imam Husain (a.s.) and the tragedies which befell him and his family.

Thirdly, one must remember the Imam Mahdi, the Imam of the time (a.s.).

There is a rationale for all of these. The remembrance of death inculcates in us a sense of humility; it makes us reflect on the temporary nature of this world and makes us turn towards Allah.

The remembrance of Imam Husain (a.s.) instills in us hope and a spirit of sacrifice for Islam. Traditions remind us that every Thursday night, the prophets (a.s.) Imams (a.s.) and Hazrat Zahra (s.a.) are in Karbala; they salute him and mourn his tragedies. Therefore as the lovers of Imam Husain (a.s.), it is our duty that wherever we are in the world on Thursday night, we too must do the same.

The remembrance of Imam Mahdi (a.s.) reminds us that every Thursday night our deeds are presented to him. He smiles when he sees our good actions and weeps at our sins and seeks forgiveness for us. It also makes us aware that Friday is the designated day of his reappearance. Therefore every Thursday night one should pray that this night is the last night of the occultation of the Imam and the dawn of Friday should bring us the glad news of his reappearance.

Dear brothers, our lives are short and death is a certainty! It is therefore important to make the best use of the opportunities that Allah provides so that we can redeem ourselves through supplication, turn toward Him in humility, seek our legitimate desires and acquire his pleasure through the expression of our poverty before Him. Shabe Jumuah is a bounty from Allah for us to achieve all of this and more.

Let us pray to Allah that He grants us the Tawfeeq to make best use of this bounty for as long as we live. Ameen!

Glorification, Salawat and Istighfar

Although the recommended rites on Friday nights are too many, we will briefly mention some of them as follows.

First: Repeat very often the following litanies:

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ

SUBHAANALLAAH

All Glory be to Allah.

اللَّهُ اَكْبَرُ

ALLAAHU AKBAR

Allah is the Most Great.

لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللَّهُ

LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAAH

There is no god save Allah.

اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ALLAAHUMMA SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMAD

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad.

It has been narrated that because Friday nights are illustrious and their daytimes are brilliant, you may repeat very often the litanies of subhanallah, Allahu akbar and la ilaha illallah, and invoke Almighty Allah's blessings upon Muhammad and his Household very frequently on this night.

According to another narration, one may invoke blessings upon Muhammad and his Household at least one hundred times on Friday nights; and the more, the better. Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) is reported as saying, "To invoke Almighty Allah's blessings upon Muhammad and his Household on Friday nights is equal to winning one thousand rewards, having one thousand evildoings erased, and having one thousand ranks raised."

It is recommended to start these invocations immediately after the Asr Prayer on Thursday, up to the end of Friday daytime. Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.) said, "On Thursday afternoons, angels from the heavens descend to the lowest space carrying golden pens and silver papers on which they record nothing except the invocations of blessings upon Muhammad and his Household."

Shaykh al-Tusi says it is recommended on Thursdays to repeat the invocation of blessings one thousand times in the following form:

اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ALLAAHUMMA SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMAD

O Allah, send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

وَعَجِّلْ فَرَجَهُمْ

WA A'JJIL FARAJAHUM

hasten their Relief,

وَاَهْلِكْ عَدُوَّهُمْ

WA AHLIK A'DUWWAHUM

and destroy their enemies

مِنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِ

MINAL JINNI WAL INS

from both jinn and human beings,

مِنَ الْاَوَّلِينَ وَالْاٰخِرِينَ

MINAL AWWALEENA WAL AAKHIREEN

both the foremost and the later ones.

Great reward will be the share of him who says this from Thursday afternoon up to the last hour of Friday.

Shaykh al-Tusi has also recorded that it is recommended to say the following prayer of forgiveness at the last hour of Thursday:

اَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ الَّذِي لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ

ASTAGHFIRULLAAHAL LADHEE LAA ILAAHA ILLAA HUW

I pray the forgiveness of Allah; there is no god but He,

الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ

AL-HAYYUL QAYYOOM

the Ever-living, the Self-Subsisting,

وَاَتُوبُ اِلَيْهِ

WA ATOOBU ILAYH

and I repent to Him

تَوْبَةَ عَبْدٍ خَاضِعٍ

TAWBATA A'BDIN KHAADI'

as a slave who is submissive,

مِسْكِيْنٍ مُسْتَكِيْنٍ

MISKEENIN MUSTAKEEN

acquiescent, and poor,

لَا يَسْتَطِيْعُ لِنَفْسِهٖ صَرْفاً وَلَا عَدْلاً

LAA YASTATEE'U LINAFSIHEE SARFAN WA LAA A'DLAA

not controlling for himself any harm or profit,

وَلَا نَفْعاً وَلَا ضَرّاً

WA LAA NAF'AN WA LAA DARRAA

or benefit or damage

وَلَا حَيَاةً وَلَا مَوْتاً وَلَا نُشُوْرًا

WA LAA HAYAATAN WA LAA MAWTAN WA LAA NUSHOORAA

and not controlling death nor life, nor raising (the dead) to life.

وَصَلَّىٰ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ

WA SALLALLAAHU A'LAA MUHAMMAD

May Allah send peace upon Muhammad

وَعِتْرَتِهِ الطَّيِّبينَ الطَّاهِرينَ

WA I'TRATIHIT TAYYIBEENAT TAAHIREEN

and his Household; the pure, the immaculate,

الْاَخْيَارِ الْاَبْرَارِ

AL-AKHYAARIL ABRAAR

the choicest, and the pious;

وَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِيْمًا

WA SALLAMA TASLEEMAA

and may He spread thorough blessings over them.

Surahs of the Night

Second: On Friday nights it is recommended to recite the following chapters (Surahs) of the Holy Qur'an:

(1) [Surah al-Isra](A21) (No. 17), (2) [Surah al-Kahf](A22) (No. 18), (3) the three Surahs beginning with Ta-Sin, i.e. [Surah al-Shu'ara](A30) (No. 26), [Surah al-Naml](A31) (No. 27) and [Surah al-Qasas](A32) (No. 28), (4) [Surah al-Sajdah](A36) (No. 32), (5) [Surah Ya-Sin](A40) (No. 36), (6) [Surah Sad](A42) (No. 38), (7) [Surah al-Ahqaf](A50) (No. 46), (8) [Surah al-Waqi'ah](A60) (No. 56), (9) [Surah Fussilat](A45) (No. 41), (10) [Surah al-Dukhan](A48) (No. 44), (11) [Surah al-Tur](A56) (No. 52), (12) [Surah al-Qamar](A58) (No. 54), and (13) [Surah al-Jumu'ah](A66) (No. 62).

If there is not enough time to recite all these Surahs, one may choose Surah al-Waqi'ah and those preceding it in the list above.

Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) is reported to have said that one who recites Surah al-Isra' every Friday night will join Imam al-Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) as one of his companions; that one who recites Surah al-Kahf on Friday nights will die a martyr and will be resurrected with the martyrs; and that one who recites the three Surahs beginning with Ta-Sin on Friday nights will be among the intimate servants of Almighty Allah, in His vicinity and under His protection, will never be afflicted with misery in this world, and will be given beyond his pleasure on the Day of Resurrection.

He (a.s.) is also reported to have said that one who recites Surah al-Sajdah on Friday nights will be given his Record of Deeds in his right hand, will not be called to account for his evildoings, and will be included with the companions of Muhammad and his Household (a.s.).

Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.) is authentically reported to have said that one who recites Surah Sad on Friday nights will be granted the good of this world and the Hereafter as none but the Prophets and the archangels are given, and will be admitted to Paradise together with all those of his household whom he loves, including his servants.

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.) is reported to have said that one who recites Surah al-Ahqaf on Fridays or on Friday nights will be saved by Almighty Allah from terror in this world and will be secured from the horror of the Day of Resurrection; and that one who recites Surah al-Waqi'ah on Friday nights will be loved by Almighty Allah and by all people, will be saved from all misery, poverty, need and misfortune in this world, and will be among the companions of Amir al-Mu'minin (a.s.), because this Surah belongs to him.

It has also been narrated that reciting Surah al-Jumu'ah on Friday nights is an expiation for the sins committed during the week. A similar merit has been narrated for reciting Surah al-Kahf on Friday nights, or after the Zuhr and Asr Prayers on Fridays.

Prayers and Other Acts of the Night

It is highly recommended to offer many supererogatory prayers on Friday nights, such as the [Prayer of Amir al-Mu'minin (a.s.)](F15), and a two-unit prayer in each unit of which one recites [Surah al-Fatihah](A5) once and [Surah al-Zalzalah](A103) fifteen times. It has been narrated that one who offers this prayer will be saved by Almighty Allah from the torment of the grave and the horrors of the Day of Resurrection.

Third: It is recommended to recite [Surah al-Jumu'ah](A66) in the first unit of the Maghrib and Isha obligatory prayers, [Surah al-Tawhid](A116) in the second unit of the Maghrib Prayer, and [Surah al-A'la](A91) in the second unit of the Isha Prayer.

Fourth: It is highly recommended to avoid reciting poetry on Friday nights. Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.) is authentically reported to have said that it is disliked to recite poetry for one who is fasting, for one in the state of ihram, and on Fridays and Friday nights; when asked whether this applies to religiously acceptable poetry too, the Imam (a.s.) answered that it does. It has also been authentically narrated from Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said, "One who recites even one verse of poetry on a Friday or a Friday night will have no share of reward on it except for that poetry." According to another narration, the prayers of those who recite poetry on Fridays will not be accepted.

Fifth: It is highly recommended to pray to Almighty Allah very frequently for the good of one's brethren-in-faith, following the example of Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (s.a.). According to a hadith, one who prays for ten deceased believers will certainly be admitted to Paradise.

It is also recommended, following Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.), to eat a pomegranate on Friday nights, preferably before going to sleep. It has been narrated that eating a pomegranate before sleeping brings security until the morning. It is also instructive to spread a cloth on the ground so as to save every seed of the pomegranate and eat them all, and it is recommended not to share it with anyone.

Sixth: It is also recommended to say the supplications dedicated to Friday nights. They are too numerous to be cited here; a few of them follow in the next tabs.

Dua in the Last Prostration of the Isha Nafilah

Imam Ja'far al-Sadiq (a.s.) is authentically reported as saying that one who says the following dua seven times in the last prostration of the supererogatory (nafilah) prayer of Isha on Friday nights will have all his sins forgiven as soon as he finishes that prayer. It is desirable to do this every night.

اَللَّهُمَّ اِنِّيْ اَسْاَلُكَ بِوَجْهِكَ الْكَريمِ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS'ALUKA BIWAJHIKAL KAREEM

O Allah, I beseech You in the name of Your Noble Face

وَاسْمِكَ الْعَظيمِ

WASMIKAL A'ZEEM

and in the name of Your Sublime Name

اَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهٖ

AN TUSALLIYA A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALIH

to send blessings to Muhammad and his Household

وَاَنْ تَغْفِرَ لِي ذَنْبِيَ الْعَظيمَ

WA AN TAGHFIRA LEE DHANBIYAL A'ZEEM

and to forgive me my grave sin.

Dua Allahumma Anta Rabbi

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) is reported to have said that one who repeats the following supplication seven times on a Friday night will be admitted to Paradise if he dies that night, and one who repeats it seven times on Friday will be admitted to Paradise if he dies that day.

اَللَّهُمَّ اَنْتَ رَبِّيْ

ALLAAHUMMA ANTA RABBEE

O Allah, You are my Lord;

لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ

LAA ILAAHA ILLAA ANT

there is no god save You;

خَلَقْتَنِيْ وَاَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَابْنُ اَمَتِكَ

KHALAQTANEE WA ANAA A'BDUKA WABNU AMATIK

You have created me, and I am Your slave and the son of Your bondmaid;

وَفِيْ قَبْضَتِكَ وَنَاصِيَتي بِيَدِكَ

WA FEE QABDATIKA WA NAASIYATEE BIYADIK

and I am in Your grip; and my forehead is in Your Hand;

اَمْسَيْتُ عَلَىٰ عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ

AMSAYTU A'LAA A'HDIKA WA WA'DIKA MAS TATA'T

I come to observe my covenant and promise to You as much as I can.

اَعُوْذُ بِرِضَاكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ

A'OODHU BIRIDAAKA MIN SHARRI MAA SANA'T

I take refuge in Your pleasure against the evil of my deeds.

اَبُوءُ بِنِعْمَتِكَ وَاَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِيْ

ABOO'U BINI'MATIKA WA ABOO'U BIDHANBEE

I acknowledge Your favors and confess of my sins.

فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ ذُنُوْبِيْ

FAGHFIR LEE DHUNOOBEE

So, (please) forgive my sins,

اِنَّهٗ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ

INNAHOO LAA YAGHFIRUDH DHUNOOBA ILLAA ANT

for none can forgive sins save You.

Dua Allahumma Man Ta'abba'a

Shaykh al-Tusi, Sayyid Ibn Tawus, al-Kaf'ami and Sayyid Ibn Baqi have recorded that it is recommended to say the following supplication on Fridays and Friday nights, and on the day and night of Arafah (the ninth of Dhul Hijjah). It is cited here as given in Shaykh al-Tusi's al-Misbah.

اَللَّهُمَّ مَنْ تَعَبَّاَ وَتَهَيَّاَ

ALLAAHUMMA MAN TA'ABBA'A WA TAHAYYA'

O Allah, One may call up, prepare,

وَاَعَدَّ وَاسْتَعَدَّ

WA A'ADDA WASTA'ADD

ready oneself, and stand prepared

لِوِفَادَةٍ اِلَىٰ مَخْلُوْقٍ

LIWIFAADATIN ILAA MAKHLOOQ

for purpose of coming to a creature

رَجَاءَ رِفْدِهٖ

RAJAA'A RIFDIH

in the hope of gaining his aid

وَطَلَبَ نَائِلِهٖ وَجَائِزَتِهٖ

WA TALABA NAA'ILIHEE WA JAA'IZATIH

and asking for his gift and present.

فَاِلَيْكَ يَا رَبِّ تَعْبِيَتِيْ وَاسْتِعْدَادِي

FA-ILAYKA YAA RABBI TA'BIYATEE WASTI'DAADEE

As for myself, to You—O my Lord—I make my preparations and readiness

رَجَاءَ عَفْوِكَ

RAJAA'A A'FWIK

hoping for Your pardon

وَطَلَبَ نَائِلِكَ وَجَائِزَتِكَ

WA TALABA NAA'ILIKA WA JAA'IZATIK

and asking for Your gift and present.

فَلَا تُخَيِّبْ دُعَاۤئِي

FALAA TUKHAYYIB DU'AA'EE

So, (please) do not disappoint my entreaty.

يَا مَنْ لَا يَخِيْبُ عَلَيْهِ سَائِلٌ

YAA MAN LAA YAKHEEBU A'LAYHI SAA'IL

O He Who never disappoints His beseechers

وَلَا يَنْقُصُهٗ نَائِلٌ

WA LAA YANQUSUHOO NAA'IL

and Whose prizes never decrease His ample-giving!

فَاِنِّيْ لَمْ اٰتِكَ ثِقَةً بِعَمَلٍ صَالِحٍ عَمِلْتُهٗ

FA-INNEE LAM AATIKA THIQATAN BI-A'MALIN SAALIHIN A'MILTUH

I have not come to You with confidence of a righteous deed that I have done

وَلَا لِوِفَادَةِ مَخْلُوْقٍ رَجَوْتُهٗ

WA LAA LIWIFAADATI MAKHLOOQIN RAJAWTUH

nor have I had any hope in a grant of any creature.

اَتَيْتُكَ مُقِرّاً عَلَىٰ نَفْسِيْ بِالْاِسَاءَةِ وَالظُّلْمِ

ATAYTUKA MUQIRRAN A'LAA NAFSEE BIL ISAA'ATI WAZ ZULM

Rather, I have come to You professing myself to be evildoer and transgressor

مُعْتَرِفاً بِاَنْ لَّا حُجَّةَ لِيْ وَلَا عُذْرَ

MU'TARIFAN BI-AL LAA HUJJATA LEE WA LAA U'DHR

and confessing that I lack any pretext or excuse.

اَتَيْتُكَ اَرْجُوْ عَظِيْمَ عَفْوِكَ

ATAYTUKA ARJOO A'ZEEMA A'FWIK

I have come to You hoping for Your great pardon

الَّذِي عَفَوْتَ بِهٖ عَنِ الْخَاطِئينَ

ALLADHEE A'FAWTA BIHEE A'NIL KHAATI'EEN

due to which You have pardoned the wrongdoers.

فَلَمْ يَمْنَعْكَ طُوْلُ عُكُوْفِهِمْ عَلِي عَظِيْمِ الْجُرْمِ

FALAM YAMNA'KA TOOLU U'KOOFIHIM A'LEE A'ZEEMIL JURM

Hence, their long-lasting retirement to their grave offenses has not prevented You

اَنْ عُدْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِالرَّحْمَةِ

AN U'DTA A'LAYHIM BIR RAHMAH

from turning to them with mercy.

فَيَا مَنْ رَحْمَتُهٗ وَاسِعَةٌ

FAYAA MAN RAHMATUHOO WAASI'AH

O He Whose mercy is huge

وَعَفْوُهٗ عَظِيْمٌ

WA A'FWUHOO A'ZEEM

and Whose pardon is great;

يَا عَظِيمُ يَا عَظِيمُ يَا عَظِيمُ

YAA A'ZEEMU YAA A'ZEEMU YAA A'ZEEM

O All-great, O All-great, O All-great;

لَا يَرُدُّ غَضَبَكَ اِلَّا حِلْمُكَ

LAA YARUDDU GHADABAKA ILLAA HILMUK

nothing can repel Your rage except Your forbearance

وَلَا يُنْجِيْ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ اِلَّا التَّضَرُّعُ اِلَيْكَ

WA LAA YUNJEE MIN SAKHATIKA ILLAT TADARRU'U ILAYK

and nothing can save from Your wrath except imploring earnestly to You.

فَهَبْ لِيْ يَا اِلٰهِي فَرَجاً

FAHAB LEE YAA ILAAHEE FARAJAA

So, my God, (please) grant me a relief

بِالْقُدْرَةِ الَّتِي تُحْيِيْ بِهَا مَيْتَ الْبِلَادِ

BIL QUDRATIL LATEE TUHYEE BIHAA MAYTAL BILAAD

in the name of the power through which You restore to life the derelict lands,

وَلَا تُهْلِكْنِيْ غَمّاً حَتَّىٰ تَسْتَجِيْبَ لِيْ

WA LAA TUHLIKNEE GHAMMAN HATTAA TASTAJEEBA LEE

and do not cause me to perish out of grief until You respond to me

وَتُعَرِّفَنِي الْاِجَابَةَ فِي دُعَائِي

WA TU'ARRIFANIL IJAABATA FEE DU'AA'EE

and show me signs of Your response to my prayers.

وَاَذِقْنِي طَعْمَ الْعَافِيَةِ اِلَىٰ مُنْتَهٰى اَجَلِيْ

WA ADHIQNEE TA'MAL A'AFIYATI ILAA MUNTAHAA AJALEE

(please) Make me taste the flavor of wellbeing up to the end of my lifetime,

وَلَا تُشْمِتْ بِيْ عَدُوِّيْ

WA LAA TUSHMIT BEE A'DUWWEE

do not make my enemies gloat over me,

وَلَا تُسَلِّطْهُ عَلَيَّ

WA LAA TUSALLIT-HU A'LAYY

do not give them a hand over me,

وَلَا تُمَكِّنْهُ مِنْ عُنُقِيْ

WA LAA TUMAKKINHU MIN U'NUQEE

and do not make them control over me.

اَللَّهُمَّ اِنْ وَضَعْتَنِيْ فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَرْفَعُنِي

ALLAAHUMMA IN WADA'TANEE FAMAN DHAL LADHEE YARFA'UNEE

O Allah, If You humiliate me, who can then exalt me?

وَاِنْ رَفَعْتَنِيْ فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَضَعُنِيْ

WA IN RAFA'TANEE FAMAN DHAL LADHEE YADA'UNEE

And if You exalt me, who can then humiliate me?

وَاِنْ اَهْلَكْتَنِيْ فَمَنْ ذَا الَّذِي يَعْرِضُ لَكَ فِي عَبْدِكَ

WA IN AHLAKTANEE FAMAN DHAL LADHEE YA'RIDU LAKA FEE A'BDIK

If You annihilate me, who can then interfere before You concerning the affair of me—Your slave

اَوْ يَسْاَلُكَ عَنْ اَمْرِهٖ،

AW YAS'ALUKA A'N AMRIH

or who can intercede to ask You about it?

وَقَدْ عَلِمْتُ اَنَّهٗ لَيْسَ فِي حُكْمِكَ ظُلْمٌ

WA QAD A'LIMTU ANNAHOO LAYSA FEE HUKMIKA ZULM

I have already known for sure that Your decrees are devoid of injustice

وَلَا فِي نَقَمَتِكَ عَجَلَةٌ

WA LAA FEE NAQAMATIKA A'JALAH

and Your punishment does not count on immediateness.

وَاِنَّمَا يَعْجَلُ مَنْ يَخَافُ الْفَوْتَ

WA INNAMAA YA'JALU MAN YAKHAAFUL FAWT

Verily, immediateness is the work of him who fears lest he may miss,

وَاِنَّمَا يَحْتَاجُ اِلَىٰ الظُّلْمِ الضَّعِيفُ

WA INNAMAA YAHTAAJU ILAZ ZULMID DA'EEF

and only do the weak need injustice.

وَقَدْ تَعَالَيْتَ يَا اِلٰهِي عَنْ ذٰلِكَ عُلُوّاً كَبِيراً

WA QAD TA'AALAYTA YAA ILAAHEE A'N DHAALIKA U'LUWWAN KABEERAA

As for You, O my God, You are too exalted to be so—Exalted and Great You are beyond all measure!

اَللَّهُمَّ اِنِّيْ اَعُوْذُ بِكَ فَاَعِذْنِيْ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE A'OODHU BIKA FA-A'IDHNEE

O Allah, I take refuge in You; so, (please) have protection upon me!

وَاَسْتَجِيرُ بِكَ فَاَجِرْنِيْ

WA ASTAJEERU BIKA FA-AJIRNEE

I call for Your safekeeping; so, (please) keep me under Your security!

وَاَسْتَرْزِقُكَ فَارْزُقْنِيْ

WA ASTARZIQUKA FARZUQNEE

I appeal for Your sustenance; so, (please) provide me with sustenance!

وَاَتَوَكَّلُ عَلَيْكَ فَاكْفِنِيْ

WA ATAWAKKALU A'LAYKA FAKFINEE

I put trust in You; so, (please) keep me under Your supervision!

وَاَسْتَنْصِرُكَ عَلَىٰ عَدُوِّيْ فَانْصُرْنِيْ

WA ASTANSIRUKA A'LAA A'DUWWEE FANSURNEE

I call for Your aid against my enemy; so, (please) grant me support!

وَاَسْتَعِينُ بِكَ فَاَعِنِّيْ

WA ASTA'EENU BIKA FA-A'INNEE

I seek Your assistance; so, (please) assist me!

وَاَسْتَغْفِرُكَ يَا اِلٰهِي فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ

WA ASTAGHFIRUKA YAA ILAAHEE FAGHFIR LEE

I ask for Your forgiveness; so, (please) forgive me.

اٰمِيْنَ اٰمِيْنَ اٰمِيْنَ.

AAMEENA AAMEENA AAMEEN

So, respond! Respond! Respond!

Dua Ya Shahida Kulli Najwa

Eighth: It is also recommended to say the following supplication, which is also recommended on the night of Arafah. Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.), narrating from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), said that Almighty Allah will forgive one who says this prayer on the night of Arafah or on Friday nights.

اَللّٰهُمَّ يَا شَاهِدَ كُلِّ نَجْوَىٰ

ALLAAHUMMA YAA SHAAHIDA KULLI NAJWAA

O Allah Who witnesses all secrets of hearts,

وَمَوْضِعَ كُلِّ شَكْوَىٰ

WA MAWDI'A KULLI SHAKWAA

Who is the object of all complaints,

وَعَالِمَ كُلِّ خَفِيَّةٍ

WA A'ALIMA KULLI KHAFIYYAH

Who knows all hidden things,

وَمُنْتَهَىٰ كُلِّ حَاجَةٍ

WA MUNTAHAA KULLI HAAJAH

and Who is the aim of all needs!

يَا مُبْتَدِئاً بِالنِّعَمِ عَلَىٰ الْعِبَادِ

YAA MUBTADI'AN BIN NI'AMI A'LAL I'BAAD

O He Who instigates favoring on the Servants!

يَا كَرِيْمَ الْعَفْوِ

YAA KAREEMAL A'FW

O He Who is All-generous in pardoning!

يَا حَسَنَ التَّجَاوُزِ

YAA HASANAT TAJAAWUZ

O He Who is All-excellent in overlooking!

يَا جَوَادُ

YAA JAWAAD

O All-magnanimous!

يَا مَنْ لَا يُوَارِيْ مِنْهُ لَيْلٌ دَاجٍ

YAA MAN LAA YUWAAREE MINHU LAYLUN DAAJ

O He Who cannot be concealed by the covering darkness of night,

وَلَا بَحْرٌ عَجَّاجٌ

WA LAA BAHRUN A'JJAAJ

the roaring clamor of oceans,

وَلَا سَمَاءٌ ذَاتُ اَبْرَاجٍ

WA LAA SAMAA'UN DHAATU ABRAAJ

the skies along with their constellations,

وَلَا ظُلَمٌ ذَاتُ ارْتِتَاجٍ

WA LAA ZULAMUN DHAATUR TITAAJ

or the thunderous murk.

يَا مَنِ الظُّلْمَةُ عِنْدَهٗ ضِيَاءٌ

YAA MANIZ ZULMATU I'NDAHOO DIYAA'

O He with Whom the entire murk is light,

اَسْاَلُكَ بِنُوْرِ وَجْهِكَ الْكَرِيمِ

AS'ALUKA BINOORI WAJHIKAL KAREEM

I beseech You in the name of the brightness of Your Noble Face

الَّذِي تَجَلَّيْتَ بِهٖ لِلْجَبَلِ فَجَعَلْتَهٗ دَكّاً

ALLADHEE TAJALLAYTA BIHEE LIL JABALI FAJA'ALTAHOO DAKKAA

through which You manifested Your glory to the mountain; so, You made it crumble

وَخَرَّ مُوسَىٰ صَعِقاً

WA KHARRA MOOSAA SA'IQAA

and (Prophet) Moses fell down in a swoon,

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي رَفَعْتَ بِهٖ السَّمَاوَاتِ بِلَا عَمَدٍ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE RAFA'TA BIHIS SAMAAWAATI BILAA A'MAD

in the name of Your Name by which You raised the heavens without any pillars

وَسَطَحْتَ بِهٖ الْاَرْضَ عَلَىٰ وَجْهِ مَاءٍ جَمَدٍ

WA SATAHTA BIHIL ARDA A'LAA WAJHI MAA'IN JAMAD

and by which You flattened the earth on the surface of solid water,

وَبِاسْمِكَ الْمَخْزُونِ الْمَكْنُونِ

WA BISMIKAL MAKHZOONIL MAKNOON

in the name of Your Name—the concealed, the stored,

الْمَكْتُوبِ الطَّاهِرِ

AL-MAKTOOBIT TAAHIR

the scribed, and the pure,

الَّذِي اِذَا دُعِيْتَ، بِهٖ اَجَبْتَ

ALLADHEE IDHAA DU'EETA BIHEE AJABT

which You answer any one who beseeches You in its name

وَاِذَا سُئِلْتَ بِهٖ اَعْطَيْتَ

WA IDHAA SU'ILTA BIHEE A'TAYT

and grant any one who asks You his request,

وَبِاسْمِكَ السُّبُّوحِ الْقُدُّوسِ الْبُرْهَانِ

WA BISMIKAS SUBBOOHIL QUDDOOSIL BURHAAN

in the name of Your Name; the Praised, Holy, and Demonstrative,

الَّذِي هُوَ نُوْرٌ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ نُوْرٍ

ALLADHEE HUWA NOORUN A'LAA KULLI NOOR

which is light over the entire light,

وَنُورٌ مِنْ نُوْرٍ

WA NOORUN MIN NOOR

which is light made of light,

يُضِيْۤءُ مِنْهُ كُلُّ نُوْرٍ

YUDEE'U MINHU KULLU NOOR

and from which all lights take their brightness;

اِذَا بَلَغَ الْاَرْضَ انْشَقَّتْ

IDHAA BALAGHAL ARDAN SHAQQAT

if it reaches the earth, it will be rent asunder,

وَاِذَا بَلَغَ السَّمَاوَاتِ فُتِحَتْ

WA IDHAA BALAGHAS SAMAAWAATI FUTIHAT

if it reaches the heavens, they will be opened,

وَاِذَا بَلَغَ الْعَرْشَ اهْتَزَّ

WA IDHAA BALAGHAL A'RSHAH TAZZ

and if it reaches the throne, it will quiver;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي تَرْتَعِدُ مِنْهُ فَرَائِصُ مَلَاۤئِكَتِكَ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE TARTA'IDU MINHU FARAA'ISU MALAA'IKATIK

and in the name of Your Name from the fear of which the muscles of Your angels tremble.

وَاَسْاَلُكَ بِحَقِّ جَبْرَائِيلَ وَمِيكَائِيلَ وَاِسْرَافِيلَ

WA AS'ALUKA BIHAQQI JABRAA'EELA WA MEEKAA'EELA WA ISRAAFEEL

I beseech You in the name of [Archangels] Gabriel, Michael, and Seraph,

وَبِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ الْمُصْطَفَىٰ

WA BIHAQQI MUHAMMADINIL MUSTAFAA

in the name of Muhammad, the Divinely-chosen Prophet,

صَلَّىٰ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهٖ

SALLALLAAHU A'LAYHI WA AALIH

peace be upon him, his Household,

وَعَلَىٰ جَمِيْعِ الْاَنْبِيَاءِ وَجَمِيعِ الْمَلَائِكَةِ

WA A'LAA JAMEE'IL ANBIYAA'I WA JAMEE'IL MALAA'IKAH

and all prophets and angels;

وَبِالْاِسْمِ الَّذِي مَشَىٰ بِهٖ الْخِضْرُ عَلَىٰ قُلَلِ الْمَاءِ

WA BIL ISMIL LADHEE MASHAA BIHIL KHIDRU A'LAA QULALIL MAA'

in the name of the Name through which al-Khadir could walk on waters

كَمَا مَشَىٰ بِهٖ عَلَىٰ جَدَدِ الْاَرْضِ

KAMAA MASHAA BIHEE A'LAA JADADIL ARD

just as he used to walk on lands;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي فَلَقْتَ بِهٖ الْبَحْرَ لِمُوسَىٰ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE FALAQTA BIHIL BAHRA LIMOOSAA

in the name of You Name through which You caused the sea to cleave asunder for Moses,

وَاَغْرَقْتَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَقَوْمَهٗ

WA AGHRAQTA FIR'AWNA WA QAWMAH

You drowned Pharaoh and his people,

وَاَنْجَيْتَ بِهٖ مُوسَىٰ بْنَ عِمْرَانَ وَمَنْ مَعَهٗ

WA ANJAYTA BIHEE MOOSABNA I'MRAANA WA MAN MA'AH

and saved Moses, the son of 'Imran, and those who accompanied him;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي دَعَاكَ بِهٖ مُوسَىٰ بْنُ عِمْرَانَ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE DA'AAKA BIHEE MOOSABNU I'MRAAN

in the name of Your Name by which Moses, the son of 'Imran, besought You

مِنْ جَانِبِ الطُّورِ الْاَيْمَنِ

MIN JAANIBIT TOORIL AYMAN

from the right slope of the Mount;

فَاسْتَجَبْتَ لَهٗ وَالْقَيْتَ عَلَيْهِ مَحَبَّةً مِنْكَ

FASTAJABTA LAHOO WAL QAYTA A'LAYHI MAHABBATAN MINK

so, You responded to him and cast down upon him love from You;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي بِهٖ اَحْيَا عِيسَىٰ بْنُ مَرْيَمَ الْمَوْتَىٰ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE BIHEE AHYAA I'EESABNU MARYAMAL MAWTAA

in the name of Your Name by which Jesus, the son of Mary, brought life to the dead,

وَتَكَلَّمَ فِيْ الْمَهْدِ صَبِيّاً

WA TAKALLAMA FIL MAHDI SABIYYAA

could speak while he was a child in the cradle,

وَاَبْرَاُ الْاَكْمَهَ وَالْاَبْرَصَ بِاِذْنِكَ

WA ABRA'UL AKMAHA WAL ABRASA BI-IDHNIK

and healed the blind and the leprous by Your permission;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي دَعَاكَ بِهٖ حَمَلَةُ عَرْشِكَ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE DA'AAKA BIHEE HAMALATU A'RSHIK

in the name of Your Name by which the bearers of Your Throne besought You

وَجَبْرَائِيلُ وَمِيكَائِيلُ وَاِسْرَافِيلُ

WA JABRAA'EELU WA MEEKAA'EELU WA ISRAAFEEL

and so did Gabriel, Michael, Seraph,

وَحَبِيبُكَ مُحَمَّدٌ صَلَّىٰ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهٖ

WA HABEEBUKA MUHAMMADUN SALLALLAAHU A'LAYHI WA AALIH

Muhammad Your most beloved one (peace be upon him and upon his Household)

وَمَلائِكَتُكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ

WA MALAA'IKATUKAL MUQARRABOON

Your favorite angels,

وَاَنْبِيَاؤُكَ الْمُرْسَلُونَ

WA ANBIYAA'UKAL MURSALOON

Your messaged Prophets,

وَعِبَادُكَ الصَّالِحُونَ مِنْ اَهْلِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْاَرَضِينَ

WA I'BAADUKAS SAALIHOONA MIN AHLIS SAMAAWAATI WAL ARADEEN

and Your righteous servants from among the inhabitants of the heavens and the layers of the earth;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي دَعَاكَ بِهٖ ذُوْ النُّونِ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE DA'AAKA BIHEE DHUN NOON

in the name of Your Name by which Dhu’l-Nun (Prophet Jonah) besought You

اِذْ ذَهَبَ مُغَاضِباً فَظَنَّ اَنْ لَنْ تَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ

IDH DHAHABA MUGHAADIBAN FAZANNA AN LAN TAQDIRA A'LAYH

when he departed in wrath: he imagined that You had no power over him,

فَنَادَىٰ فِي الظُّلُمَاتِ اَنْ لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ

FANAADAA FIZ ZULUMAATI AN LAA ILAAHA ILLAA ANTA SUBHAANAK

but he cried through the depths of darkness, “There is no god but You. Glory be to You.

اِنِّيْۤ كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

INNEE KUNTU MINAZ ZAALIMEEN

I was indeed one of those who are wrong!”

فَاسْتَجَبْتَ لَهٗ وَنَجَّيْتَهٗ مِنَ الْغَمِّ

FASTAJABTA LAHOO WA NAJJAYTAHOO MINAL GHAMM

So, You responded to him and delivered him from the grief

وَكَذٰلِكَ تُنْجِيْ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ

WA KADHAALIKA TUNJIL MU'MINEEN

and thus do You deliver the believers;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الْعَظِيمِ الَّذِي دَعَاكَ بِهٖ دَاوُودُ

WA BISMIKAL A'ZEEMIL LADHEE DA'AAKA BIHEE DAAWOOD

in the name of Your Great Name by which David besought You

وَخَرَّ لَكَ سَاجِداً فَغَفَرْتَ لَهٗ ذَنْبَهٗ

WA KHARRA LAKA SAAJIDAN FAGHAFARTA LAHOO DHANBAH

and as he fell down prostrating himself to You, You rectified it for him;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي دَعَتْكَ بِهٖ اٰسِيَةُ امْرَاَةُ فِرْعَوْنَ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE DA'ATKA BIHEE AASIYATUM RA'ATU FIR'AWN

in the name of Your Name by which Asiyah, the wife of Pharaoh, besought You,

اِذْ قَالَتْ: ”رَبِّ ابْنِ لِيْ عِنْدَكَ بَيْتاً فِي الْجَنَّةِ

IDH QAALAT RABBIBNI LEE I'NDAKA BAYTAN FIL JANNAH

saying, “My Lord! Build for me a house with You in Paradise,

وَنَجِّنِي مِنْ فِرْعَوْنَ وَعَمَلِهٖ

WA NAJJINEE MIN FIR'AWNA WA A'MALIH

deliver me from Pharaoh and his doing,

وَنَجِّنِي مِنَ الْقَوْمِ الظَّالِمِينَ“

WA NAJJINEE MINAL QAWMIZ ZAALIMEEN

and deliver me from the unjust people.”

فَاسْتَجَبْتَ لَهَا دُعَاءَهَا

FASTAJABTA LAHAA DU'AA'AHAA

So, You responded to her prayer;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي دَعَاكَ بِهٖ اَيُّوْبُ اِذْ حَلَّ بِهٖ الْبَلَاءُ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE DA'AAKA BIHEE AYYOOBU IDH HALLA BIHIL BALAA'

in the name of Your Name by which (Prophet) Job besought You after misfortune had befallen him;

فَعَافَيْتَهٗ وَآتَيْتَهٗ اَهْلَهٗ وَمِثْلَهُمْ مَعَهُمْ

FA'AAFAYTAHOO WA AATAYTAHOO AHLAHOO WA MITHLAHUM MA'AHUM

so, You healed him and gave him his family and the like of them with them:

رَحْمَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ وَذِكْرَىٰ لِلْعَابِدِيْنَ

RAHMATAN MIN I'NDIKA WA DHIKRAA LIL A'ABIDEEN

a mercy from You and a reminder to the worshippers;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي دَعَاكَ بِهٖ يَعْقُوْبُ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE DA'AAKA BIHEE YA'QOOB

in the name of Your Name by which (Prophet) Jacob besought You;

فَرَدَدْتَ عَلَيْهِ بَصَرَهٗ وَقُرَّةَ عَيْنِهٖ يُوْسُفَ وَجَمَعْتَ شَمْلَهٗ

FARADADTA A'LAYHI BASARAHOO WA QURRATA A'YNIHEE YOOSUFA WA JAMA'TA SHAMLAH

so, You returned to him his sight and the delight of his heart, Joseph, and You reunified him.

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي دَعَاكَ بِهٖ سُلَيْمَانُ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE DA'AAKA BIHEE SULAYMAAN

in the name of Your Name by which (Prophet) Solomon besought You;

فَوَهَبْتَ لَهٗ مُلْكاً لَا يَنْبَغِيْ لِاَحَدٍ مِنْ بَعْدِهٖ

FAWAHABTA LAHOO MULKAN LAA YANBAGHEE LI-AHADIN MIN BA'DIH

So, You gifted him kingdom that none else should never gain,

اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ الْوَهَّابُ

INNAKA ANTAL WAHHAAB

for You are verily the Granter of bounties;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي سَخَّرْتَ بِهٖ الْبُرَاقَ لِمُحَمَّدٍ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE SAKHKHARTA BIHIL BURAAQA LIMUHAMMAD

in the name of Your Name by which You subdued the Buraq to Muhammad,

صَلَّىٰ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهٖ وَسَلَّمَ

SALLALLAAHU A'LAYHI WA AALIHEE WA SALLAM

peace and blessings be upon him and his Household,

اِذْ قَالَ تَعَالَىٰ: ”سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي اَسْرٰى بِعَبْدِهٖ لَيْلاً

IDH QAALA TA'AALAA SUBHAANAL LADHEE ASRAA BI-A'BDIHEE LAYLAA

as Almighty Allah says, “Glory be to Him Who made His servant to go on a night

مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ اِلَىٰ الْمَسْجِدِ الْاَقْصَىٰ“

MINAL MASJIDIL HARAAMI ILAL MASJIDIL AQSAA

from the Sacred Mosque to the remote mosque.”

وَقَوْلُهٗ: ”سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهٗ مُقْرِنِيْنَ

WA QAWLUHOO SUBHAANAL LADHEE SAKHKHARA LANAA HAADHAA WA MAA KUNNAA LAHOO MUQRINEEN

He also says, “Glory be to Him Who made this subservient to us and we were not able to do it.

وَاِنَّا اِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُوْنَ

WA INNAA ILAA RABBINAA LAMUNQALIBOON

Surely, to our Lord we must return;”

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي تَنَزَّلَ بِهٖ جَبْرَائِيلُ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE TANAZZALA BIHEE JABRAA'EELU A'LAA MUHAMMAD

in the name of Your Name by which (Archangel) Gabriel used to ascend to Muhammad,

صَلَّىٰ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهٖ

SALLALLAAHU A'LAYHI WA AALIH

peace be upon him and his Household;

وَبِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي دَعَاكَ بِهٖ اٰدَمُ

WA BISMIKAL LADHEE DA'AAKA BIHEE AADAM

and in the name of Your Name by which Adam besought You;

فَغَفَرْتَ لَهٗ ذَنْبَهٗ وَاَسْكَنْتَهٗ جَنَّتَكَ

FAGHAFARTA LAHOO DHANBAHOO WA ASKANTAHOO JANNATAK

so, You rectified him and allowed him to dwell in Your Paradise.

وَاَسْاَلُكَ بِحَقِّ الْقُرْآنِ الْعَظِيمِ

WA AS'ALUKA BIHAQQIL QUR'AANIL A'ZEEM

I beseech You in the name of the Great Qur'an,

وَبِحَقِّ مُحَمَّدٍ خَاتَمِ النَّبِيِّينَ

WA BIHAQQI MUHAMMADIN KHAATAMIN NABIYYEEN

in the name of Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets,

وَبِحَقِّ اِبْرَاهِيْمَ

WA BIHAQQI IBRAAHEEM

in the name of Abraham,

وَبِحَقِّ فَصْلِكَ يَوْمَ الْقَضَاءِ

WA BIHAQQI FASLIKA YAWMAL QADAA'

in the name of Your Judgment on the Day of the Administration of Justice,

وَبِحَقِّ الْمَوَازِينِ اِذَا نُصِبَتْ

WA BIHAQQIL MAWAAZEENI IDHAA NUSIBAT

in the name of the Scales when they shall be set up,

وَالصُّحُفِ اِذَا نُشِرَتْ

WAS SUHUFI IDHAA NUSHIRAT

the Scrolls when they shall be laid open,

وَبِحَقِّ الْقَلَمِ وَمَا جَرَىٰ

WA BIHAQQIL QALAMI WA MAA JARAA

the Pen and whatever has been decided,

وَاللَّوْحِ وَمَا اَحْصٰى

WAL LAWHI WA MAA AHSAA

and the Tablet and whatever it has recorded;

وَبِحَقِّ الْاِسْمِ الَّذِي كَتَبْتَهٗ عَلَىٰ سُرَادِقِ الْعَرْشِ

WA BIHAQQIL ISMIL LADHEE KATABTAHOO A'LAA SURAADIQIL A'RSH

in the name of the Name that You had inscribed on the pavilion of the Divine Throne

قَبْلَ خَلْقِكَ الْخَلْقَ وَالدُّنْيَا

QABLA KHALQIKAL KHALQA WAD DUNYAA

two thousand years before You created the beings, the world,

وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ بِاَلْفَيْ عَامٍ

WASH SHAMSA WAL QAMARA BI-ALFAY A'AM

the sun, and the moon.

وَاَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللَّهُ

WA ASH-HADU AN LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAAH

I bear witness that there is no god save Allah,

وَحْدَهٗ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهٗ

WAHDAHOO LAA SHAREEKA LAH

alone without having any partner,

وَاَنَّ مُحَمَّداً عَبْدُهٗ وَرَسُولُهٗ

WA ANNA MUHAMMADAN A'BDUHOO WA RASOOLUH

and that Muhammad is his servant and messenger.

وَاَسْاَلُكَ بِاسْمِكَ الْمَخْزُونِ فِيْ خَزَائِنِكَ

WA AS'ALUKA BISMIKAL MAKHZOONI FEE KHAZAA'INIK

I beseech You in the name of Your Name that is hoarded in Your stores,

الَّذِي اسْتَاْثَرْتَ بِهٖ فِيْ عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ

ALLADHIS TA'THARTA BIHEE FEE I'LMIL GHAYBI I'NDAK

You have kept in the knowledge of the Unseen with You

لَمْ يَظْهَرْ عَلَيْهِ اَحَدٌ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ

LAM YAZHAR A'LAYHI AHADUN MIN KHALQIK

and it has not been shown to any of Your creatures,

لَا مَلَكٌ مُقَرَّبٌ

LAA MALAKUN MUQARRAB

be him a favorite angel,

وَلَا نَبِيٌّ مُرْسَلٌ

WA LAA NABIYYUN MURSAL

a missioned Prophet,

وَلَا عَبْدٌ مُصْطَفَىٰ

WA LAA A'BDUN MUSTAFAA

or a chosen servant.

وَاَسْاَلُكَ بِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي شَقَقْتَ بِهٖ الْبِحَارَ

WA AS'ALUKA BISMIKAL LADHEE SHAQAQTA BIHIL BIHAAR

I beseech You in the name of Your Name by which You rent asunder the oceans,

وَقَامَتْ بِهٖ الْجِبَالُ

WA QAAMAT BIHIL JIBAAL

the mountains rose,

وَاخْتَلَفَ بِهٖ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ

WAKHTALAFA BIHIL LAYLU WAN NAHAAR

and night and day follow each other,

وَبِحَقِّ السَّبْعِ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنِ الْعَظِيمِ

WA BIHAQQIS SAB'IL MATHAANEE WAL QUR'AANIL A'ZEEM

in the name of the seven of the oft-repeated verses and the Grand Qur'an,

وَبِحَقِّ الْكِرَامِ الْكَاتِبِينَ

WA BIHAQQIL KIRAAMIL KAATIBEEN

in the name of the noble, recording angels,

وَبِحَقِّ طٰهٰ وَيس وَكهيعص

WA BIHAQQI TAA HAA WA YAA SEEN WA KAAAF HAA YAA A'YN SAAAD

in the name of Ta-Ha, Ya-Sin, Kaf-Ha-Ya-'Ayn-Sad,

وَحم عسق

WA HAA MEEM A'YN SEEN QAAAF

Ha-Mim-'Ayn-Sin-Qaf,

وَبِحَقِّ تَوْرَاةِ مُوسَىٰ

WA BIHAQQI TAWRAATI MOOSAA

and in the name of the Torah of Moses,

وَاِنْجِيلِ عِيسَىٰ

WA INJEELI I'EESAA

the Gospel of Jesus,

وَزَبُورِ دَاوُودَ

WA ZABOORI DAAWOOD

the Psalms of David,

وَفُرْقَانِ مُحَمَّدٍ

WA FURQAANI MUHAMMAD

the Furqan (Criterion) of Muhammad,

صَلَّىٰ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهٖ

SALLALLAAHU A'LAYHI WA AALIH

peace be upon him, his Household,

وَعَلَىٰ جَمِيْعِ الرُّسُلِ وَبَاهِيّاً شَرَاهِيّاً

WA A'LAA JAMEE'IR RUSULI WA BAAHIYYAN SHARAAHIYYAA

and all the messengers and bahiyya sharahiyya.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّيْۤ اَسْاَلُكَ بِحَقِّ تِلْكَ الْمُنَاجَاةِ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS'ALUKA BIHAQQI TILKAL MUNAAJAAH

O Allah, I beseech You in the name of this confidential talk

الَّتِي كَانَتْ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ مُوسَىٰ بْنِ عِمْرَانَ

ALLATEE KAANAT BAYNAKA WA BAYNA MOOSABNI I'MRAAN

which took place between You and Moses, the son of 'Imran,

فَوْقَ جَبَلِ طُوْرِ سَيْنَاءَ

FAWQA JABALI TOORI SAYNAA'

on the Mount Tur Sayna',

وَاَسْاَلُكَ بِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي عَلَّمْتَهٗ مَلَكَ الْمَوْتِ لِقَبْضِ الْاَرْوَاحِ

WA AS'ALUKA BISMIKAL LADHEE A'LLAMTAHOO MALAKAL MAWTI LIQABDIL ARWAAH

I beseech You in the name of Your Name which You taught the Angel of Death so that he would be able to grasp the souls,

وَاَسْاَلُكَ بِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي كُتِبَ عَلَىٰ وَرَقِ الزَّيْتُونِ

WA AS'ALUKA BISMIKAL LADHEE KUTIBA A'LAA WARAQIZ ZAYTOON

I beseech You in the name of Your Name which was written on the leaves of olive-trees;

فَخَضَعَتِ النِّيرَانُ لِتِلْكَ الْوَرَقَةِ

FAKHADA'ATIN NEERAANU LITILKAL WARAQAH

so, fires subdued to these leaves

فَقُلْتَ: ”يَا نَارُ كُوْنِيْ بَرْداً وَسَلَاماً“

FAQULTA YAA NAARU KOONEE BARDAN WA SALAAMAA

after You said, “O fire! Be a comfort and peace,”

وَاَسْاَلُكَ بِاسْمِكَ الَّذِي كَتَبْتَهٗ عَلَىٰ سُرَادِقِ الْمَجْدِ وَالْكَرَامَةِ

WA AS'ALUKA BISMIKAL LADHEE KATABTAHOO A'LAA SURAADIQIL MAJDI WAL KARAAMAH

and I beseech You in the name of Your Name that You wrote on the canopies of Glory and Dignity.

يَا مَنْ لَا يُخْفِيهِ سَائِلٌ

YAA MAN LAA YUKHFEEHI SAA'IL

O He Who cannot be annoyed by any beseecher

وَلَا يَنْقُصُهٗ نَائِلٌ

WA LAA YANQUSUHOO NAA'IL

He Who cannot be influenced by any reward (that He presents)!

يَا مَنْ بِهٖ يُسْتَغَاثُ وَاِلَيْهِ يُلْجَاُ

YAA MAN BIHEE YUSTAGHAATHU WA ILAYHI YULJA'

O He Whose refuge is taken and to Whom resort is made!

اَسْاَلُكَ بِمَعَاقِدِ الْعِزِّ مِنْ عَرْشِكَ

AS'ALUKA BIMA'AAQIDIL I'ZZI MIN A'RSHIK

I beseech You in the name of the Seats of Honor belonging to Your Throne,

وَمُنْتَهَىٰ الرَّحْمَةِ مِنْ كِتَابِكَ

WA MUNTAHAR RAHMATI MIN KITAABIK

the utmost of mercy in Your Book,

وَبِاسْمِكَ الْاَعْظَمِ

WA BISMIKAL A'ZAM

Your All-great Name,

وَجَدِّكَ الْاَعْلَىٰ

WA JADDIKAL A'LAA

Your All-high majesty,

وَكَلِمَاتِكَ التَّامَّاتِ الْعُلَىٰ

WA KALIMAATIKAT TAAMMAATIL U'LAA

and Your most high, perfect Words.

اَللّٰهُمَّ رَبَّ الرِّيَاحِ وَمَا ذَرَتْ

ALLAAHUMMA RABBAR RIYAAHI WA MAA DHARAT

O Allah, Lord of winds and whatever they scatter far,

وَالسَّمَاءِ وَمَا اَظَلَّتْ

WAS SAMAA'I WA MAA AZALLAT

Lord of the sky and whatever it covers,

وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا اَقَلَّتْ

WAL ARDI WA MAA AQALLAT

the Lord of the earth and whatever it carries,

وَالشَّيَاطِينِ وَمَا اَضَلَّتْ

WASH SHAYAATEENI WA MAA ADALLAT

the Lord of the devils and whomever they mislead,

وَالْبِحَارِ وَمَا جَرَتْ

WAL BIHAARI WA MAA JARAT

and the Lord of the oceans and wherever they flow.

وَبِحَقِّ كُلِّ حَقٍّ هُوَ عَلَيْكَ حَقٌّ

WA BIHAQQI KULLI HAQQIN HUWA A'LAYKA HAQQ

I beseech You in the name of everything that enjoys a right with You,

وَبِحَقِّ الْمَلَائِكَةِ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ

WA BIHAQQIL MALAA'IKATIL MUQARRABEEN

in the name of the favorite angels,

وَالرَّوْحَانِيِّينَ وَالْكَرُّوبِيِّينَ

WAR RAWHAANIYYEENA WAL KARROOBIYYEEN

the angels managing the spirits, the cherubim,

وَالْمُسَبِّحِينَ لَكَ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَا يَفْتُرُوْنَ

WAL MUSABBIHEENA LAKA BIL LAYLI WAN NAHAARI LAA YAFTUROON

and the angels praising You night and day without showing sluggishness,

وَبِحَقِّ اِبْرَاهِيْمَ خَلِيْلِكَ

WA BIHAQQI IBRAAHEEMA KHALEELIK

in the name of Abraham, Your intimate friend,

وَبِحَقِّ كُلِّ وَلِيٍّ يُنَادِيْكَ بَيْنَ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةِ

WA BIHAQQI KULLI WALIYYIN YUNAADEEKA BAYNAS SAFAA WAL MARWAH

and in the name of each and every saint who calls You between Safa and Marwah

وَتَسْتَجِيبُ لَهٗ دُعَاءَهٗ

WA TASTAJEEBU LAHOO DU'AA'AH

and You respond to his/her prayer.

يَا مُجِيْبُ اَسْاَلُكَ بِحَقِّ هٰذِهِ الْاَسْمَاءِ وَبِهٰذِهِ الدَّعَوَاتِ

YAA MUJEEBU AS'ALUKA BIHAQQI HAADHIHIL ASMAA'I WA BIHAADHIHID DA'AWAAT

O Responsive Lord! I beseech You in the name of all these names and all these prayers

اَنْ تَغْفِرَ لَنَا مَا قَدَّمْنَا وَمَا اَخَّرْنَا

AN TAGHFIRA LANAA MAA QADDAMNAA WA MAA AKHKHARNAA

to forgive us all our past and coming sins,

وَمَا اَسْرَرْنَا وَمَا اَعْلَنَّا

WA MAA ASRARNAA WA MAA A'LANNAA

including the secret and the open,

وَمَا اَبْدَيْنَا وَمَا اَخْفَيْنَا

WA MAA ABDAYNAA WA MAA AKHFAYNAA

the hidden and the public,

وَمَا اَنْتَ اَعْلَمُ بِهٖ مِنَّا

WA MAA ANTA A'LAMU BIHEE MINNAA

and those whom You know better than we do.

اِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ

INNAKA A'LAA KULLI SHAY'IN QADEER

Verily, You have power over all things.

بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ

BIRAHMATIKA YAA ARHAMAR RAAHIMEEN

[Respond] in the name of Your mercy, O most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

يَا حَافِظَ كُلِّ غَرِيْبٍ

YAA HAAFIZA KULLI GHAREEB

O He Who guards all strangers!

يَا مُؤْنِسَ كُلِّ وَحِيْدٍ

YAA MU'NISA KULLI WAHEED

O He Who brings entertainment to all lonely ones!

يَا قُوَّةَ كُلِّ ضَعِيْفٍ

YAA QUWWATA KULLI DA'EEF

O He Who is the power of all the weak!

يَا نَاصِرَ كُلِّ مَظْلُوْمٍ

YAA NAASIRA KULLI MAZLOOM

O He Who is the support of all the persecuted!

يَا رَازِقَ كُلِّ مَحْرُوْمٍ

YAA RAAZIQA KULLI MAHROOM

O He Who bestows upon all the deprived!

يَا مُؤْنِسَ كُلِّ مُسْتَوْحِشٍ

YAA MU'NISA KULLI MUSTAWHISH

O He Who brings entertainment to all the lonesome!

يَا صَاحِبَ كُلِّ مُسَافِرٍ

YAA SAAHIBA KULLI MUSAAFIR

O He Who is the company of all those on journeys!

يَا عِمَادَ كُلِّ حَاضِرٍ

YAA I'MAADA KULLI HAADIR

O He Who is the pillar of all the present!

يَا غَافِرَ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ وَخَطِيئَةٍ

YAA GHAAFIRA KULLI DHANBIN WA KHATEE'AH

O He Who forgives all sins and offenses!

يَا غِيَاثَ الْمُسْتَغِيثِينَ

YAA GHIYAATHAL MUSTAGHEETHEEN

O He Who is the aid of all those begging aid!

يَا صَرِيْخَ الْمُسْتَصْرِخِينَ

YAA SAREEKHAL MUSTASRIKHEEN

O He Who is the relief of all those pleading for relief!

يَا كَاشِفَ كَرْبِ الْمَكْرُوبِينَ

YAA KAASHIFA KARBIL MAKROOBEEN

O He Who relieves the calamity of those inflicted with calamities!

يَا فَارِجَ هَمِّ الْمَهْمُومِينَ

YAA FAARIJA HAMMIL MAHMOOMEEN

O He Who alleviate the distress of the distressed ones!

يَا بَدِيْعَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْاَرَضِينَ

YAA BADEE'AS SAMAAWAATI WAL ARADEEN

O He Who is the Originator of the heavens and the layers of the earth!

يَا مُنْتَهَىٰ غَايَةِ الطَّالِبِينَ

YAA MUNTAHAA GHAAYATIT TAALIBEEN

O He Who is the utmost hope of the seekers!

يَا مُجِيْبَ دَعْوَةِ الْمُضْطَرِّينَ

YAA MUJEEBA DA'WATIL MUDTARREEN

O He Who responds to the prayers of the troubled!

يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ

YAA ARHAMAR RAAHIMEEN

O He Who is the most Merciful of all those who show mercy!

يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِينَ

YAA RABBAL A'ALAMEEN

O Lord of the worlds!

يَا دَيَّانَ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ

YAA DAYYAANA YAWMID DEEN

O Master of the Judgment Day!

يَا اَجْوَدَ الْاَجْوَدِينَ

YAA AJWADAL AJWADEEN

O most Magnanimous of all those who act magnanimously!

يَا اَكْرَمَ الْاَكْرَمِينَ

YAA AKRAMAL AKRAMEEN

O most Generous of all those who act generously!

يَا اَسْمَعَ السَّامِعِينَ

YAA ASMA'AS SAAMI'EEN

O most Hearing of all those who can hear!

يَا اَبْصَرَ النَّاظِرِينَ

YAA ABSARAN NAAZIREEN

O most Seeing of all those who can see!

يَا اَقْدَرَ الْقَادِرِينَ

YAA AQDARAL QAADIREEN

O most Powerful of all those who have power!

اغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي تُغَيِّرُ النِّعَمَ

IGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE TUGHAYYIRUN NI'AM

(Please) forgive my sins that change the bounties

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي تُوْرِثُ النَّدَمَ

WAGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE TOORITHUN NADAM

And forgive me my sins that bring about remorse,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي تُوْرِثُ السَّقَمَ

WAGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE TOORITHUS SAQAM

forgive me my sins that result in ailment,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي تَهْتِكُ الْعِصَمَ

WAGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE TAHTIKUL I'SAM

forgive me my sins that tear safeguards,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي تَرُدُّ الدُّعَاءَ

WAGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE TARUDDUD DU'AA'

forgive me my sins that repel prayers,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي تَحْبِسُ قَطْرَ السَّمَاءِ

WAGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE TAHBISU QATRAS SAMAA'

forgive me my sins that withhold the drops of the sky,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي تُعَجِّلُ الْفَنَاءَ

WAGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE TU'AJJILUL FANAA'

forgive me my sins that hasten extinction,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي تَجْلِبُ الشَّقَاءَ

WAGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE TAJLIBUSH SHAQAA'

forgive me my sins that beget misery,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي تُظْلِمُ الْهَوَاءَ

WAGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE TUZLIMUL HAWAA'

forgive me my sins that darken the atmospheres,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي تَكْشِفُ الْغِطَاءَ

WAGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE TAKSHIFUL GHITAA'

forgive me my sins that disclose the coverings,

وَاغْفِرْ لِيَ الذُّنُوبَ الَّتِي لَا يَغْفِرُهَا غَيْرُكَ يَا اَللّٰهُ

WAGHFIR LIYADH DHUNOOBAL LATEE LAA YAGHFIRUHAA GHAYRUKA YAA ALLAAH

forgive me my sins that none can forgive save You, O Allah,

وَاحْمِلْ عَنِّيْ كُلَّ تَبِعَةٍ لِاَحَدٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ

WAHMIL A'NNEE KULLA TABI'ATIN LI-AHADIN MIN KHALQIK

bear from me every offensive that I have made against any of Your creatures,

وَاجْعَلْ لِيْ مِنْ اَمْرِيْ فَرَجاً وَمَخْرَجاً وَيُسْراً

WAJ'AL LEE MIN AMREE FARAJAN WA MAKHRAJAN WA YUSRAA

make all my affairs reach at relief, exit, and easiness,

وَاَنْزِلْ يَقِيْنَكَ فِيْ صَدْرِيْ

WA ANZIL YAQEENAKA FEE SADREE

make Your tranquility ascend on my chest,

وَرَجَاءَكَ فِيْ قَلْبِيْ حَتَّىٰ لَا اَرْجُوَ غَيْرَكَ

WA RAJAA'AKA FEE QALBEE HATTAA LAA ARJUWA GHAYRAK

and make hope in You ascend on my heart so that I shall never hope for anyone save You.

اَللّٰهُمَّ احْفَظْنِيْ وَعَافِنِي فِيْ مَقَامِيْ

ALLAAHUMMAH FAZNEE WA A'AFINEE FEE MAQAAMEE

O Allah, (please) safeguard me, heal me in all my situations,

وَاصْحَبْنِي فِيْ لَيْلِيْ وَنَهَارِي

WAS-HABNEE FEE LAYLEE WA NAHAAREE

be my companion at nights and days,

وَمِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيَّ وَمِنْ خَلْفِيْ

WA MIN BAYNI YADAYYA WA MIN KHALFEE

be ahead of me, behind me,

وَعَنْ يَمِيْنِيْ وَعَنْ شِمَالِيْ

WA A'N YAMEENEE WA A'N SHIMAALEE

from my right side, from my left side,

وَمِنْ فَوْقِيْ وَمِنْ تَحْتِيْ

WA MIN FAWQEE WA MIN TAHTEE

from above me, and from beneath me,

وَيَسِّرْ لِيَ السَّبِيلَ

WA YASSIR LIYAS SABEEL

make easy all the ways for me,

وَاَحْسِنْ لِيَ التَّيْسِيرَ

WA AHSIN LIYAT TAYSEER

make excellent facilitation for me,

وَلَا تَخْذُلْنِيْ فِي الْعَسِيرِ

WA LAA TAKHDHULNEE FIL A'SEER

do not disappoint me in hardships,

وَاهْدِنِي يَا خَيْرَ دَلِيْلٍ،

WAHDINEE YAA KHAYRA DALEEL

guide me, O Best of all guides,

وَلَا تَكِلْنِيْ اِلَى نَفْسِيْ فِيْ الْاُمُورِ

WA LAA TAKILNEE ILAA NAFSEE FIL UMOOR

do not leave me alone in all my affairs,

وَلَقِّنِي كُلَّ سُرُوْرٍ

WA LAQQINEE KULLA SUROOR

make me receive all pleasures,

وَاقْلِبْنِي اِلَىٰ اَهْلِيْ بِالْفَلَاحِ وَالنَّجَاحِ

WAQLIBNEE ILAA AHLEE BIL FALAAHI WAN NAJAAH

and make me return to my family with prosperity, success,

مَحْبُوْرًا فِي الْعَاجِلِ وَالْاٰجِلِ

MAHBOORAN FIL A'AJILI WAL AAJIL

and gladness in the present and in the future.

اِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ

INNAKA A'LAA KULLI SHAY'IN QADEER

Verily, You have power over all things.

وَارْزُقْنِي مِنْ فَضْلِكَ

WARZUQNEE MIN FADLIK

(Please) bestow upon me with Your favors,

وَاَوْسِعْ عَلَيَّ مِنْ طَيِّبَاتِ رِزْقِكَ

WA AWSI' A'LAYYA MIN TAYYIBAATI RIZQIK

expand for me the most favorable of Your sustenance,

وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِي فِيْ طَاعَتِكَ

WASTA'MILNEE FEE TAA'ATIK

apply me to the obedience to You,

وَاَجِرْنِي مِنْ عَذَابِكَ وَنَارِكَ

WA AJIRNEE MIN A'DHAABIKA WA NAARIK

redeem me from Your chastisement and Fire,

وَاقْلِبْنِي اِذَا تَوَفَّيْتَنِيْۤ اِلَىٰ جَنَّتِكَ بِرَحْمَتِكَ

WAQLIBNEE IDHAA TAWAFFAYTANEE ILAA JANNATIKA BIRAHMATIK

and when You grasp my soul, lead me to Your Paradise, by Your mercy.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّي اَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ زَوَالِ نِعْمَتِكَ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE A'OODHU BIKA MIN ZAWAALI NI'MATIK

O Allah, I seek Your protection against confiscation of Your graces,

وَمِنْ تَحْوِيْلِ عَافِيَتِكَ

WA MIN TAHWEELI A'AFIYATIK

against alternation of Your conferral of wellbeing on me,

وَمِنْ حُلُوْلِ نَقِمَتِكَ

WA MIN HULOOLI NAQIMATIK

against the befalling of Your punishment,

وَمِنْ نُزُوْلِ عَذَابِكَ

WA MIN NUZOOLI A'DHAABIK

and against the ensuing of Your chastisement.

وَاَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ جَهْدِ الْبَلَاءِ

WA A'OODHU BIKA MIN JAHDIL BALAA'

I seek Your protection against arduous hardships,

وَدَرَكِ الشَّقَاءِ

WA DARAKISH SHAQAA'

against coming about of misery,

وَمِنْ سُوْۤءِ الْقَضَاءِ

WA MIN SOO'IL QADAA'

against evil end results,

وَشَمَاتَةِ الْاَعْدَاءِ

WA SHAMAATATIL A'DAA'

against my enemies’ gloating over my grief,

وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا يَنْزِلُ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ

WA MIN SHARRI MAA YANZILU MINAS SAMAA'

against the evil of everything that ascends from the heavens,

وَمِنْ شَرِّ مَا فِيْ الْكِتَابِ الْمُنْزَلِ

WA MIN SHARRI MAA FIL KITAABIL MUNZAL

and against the evils mentioned in the Revealed Book.

اَللّٰهُمَّ لَا تَجْعَلْنِيْ مِنَ الْاَشْرَارِ

ALLAAHUMMA LAA TAJ'ALNEE MINAL ASHRAAR

O Allah, (please) do not include me with the evil ones,

وَلَا مِنْ اَصْحَابِ النَّارِ

WA LAA MIN AS-HAABIN NAAR

do not include me with the people of Hellfire,

وَلَا تَحْرِمْنِيْ صُحْبَةَ الْاَخْيَارِ

WA LAA TAHRIMNEE SUHBATAL AKHYAAR

do not deprive me of the companionship of the upright people,

وَاَحْيِنِي حَيَاةً طَيِّبَةً

WA AHYINEE HAYAATAN TAYYIBAH

grant me a pleasant lifetime,

وَتَوَفَّنِي وَفَاةً طَيِّبَةً تُلْحِقُنِيْ بِالْاَبْرَارِ

WA TAWAFFANEE WAFAATAN TAYYIBATAN TULHIQUNEE BIL ABRAAR

decide for me a kind of death due to which You will join me to the Pious Ones,

وَارْزُقْنِي مُرَافَقَةَ الْاَنْبِيَاءِ

WARZUQNEE MURAAFAQATAL ANBIYAA'

and confer upon me with the companionship of the Prophets

فِيْ مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِنْدَ مَلِيْكٍ مُقْتَدِرٍ

FEE MAQ'ADI SIDQIN I'NDA MALEEKIN MUQTADIR

in the seat of honesty with the All-powerful King.

اَللّٰهُمَّ لَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَىٰ حُسْنِ بَلَائِكَ وَصُنْعِكَ

ALLAAHUMMA LAKAL HAMDU A'LAA HUSNI BALAA'IKA WA SUN'IK

O Allah, all praise be to You for Your pleasant trials and deeds to us.

وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَىٰ الْاِسْلَامِ وَاتِّبَاعِ السُّنَّةِ

WA LAKAL HAMDU A'LAL ISLAAMI WATTIBAA'IS SUNNAH

All praise be to You for my being Muslim and for my following the Prophet’s traditions.

يَا رَبِّ كَمَا هَدَيْتَهُمْ لِدِيْنِكَ

YAA RABBI KAMAA HADAYTAHUM LIDEENIK

O my Lord, as You have guided them (i.e. the pious)

وَعَلَّمْتَهُمْ كِتَابَكَ فَاهْدِنَا وَعَلِّمْنَا

WA A'LLAMTAHUM KITAABAKA FAHDINAA WA A'LLIMNAA

and taught them Your Book, (please) guide us and teach us.

وَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَىٰ حُسْنِ بَلَائِكَ وَصُنْعِكَ عِنْدِيْ خَاصَّةً

WA LAKAL HAMDU A'LAA HUSNI BALAA'IKA WA SUN'IKA I'NDEE KHAASSAH

All praise be to You for Your pleasant trials and deeds to me in private,

كَمَا خَلَقْتَنِيْ فَاَحْسَنْتَ خَلْقِيْ

KAMAA KHALAQTANEE FA-AHSANTA KHALQEE

as You created me, gifted me an excellent form,

وَعَلَّمْتَنِي فَاَحْسَنْتَ تَعْلِيْمِيْ

WA A'LLAMTANEE FA-AHSANTA TA'LEEMEE

taught me, gifted me excellent erudition,

وَهَدَيْتَنِي فَاَحْسَنْتَ هِدَايَتِيْ

WA HADAYTANEE FA-AHSANTA HIDAAYATEE

guided me, and gifted me excellent guidance.

فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَىٰ اِنْعَامِكَ عَلَيَّ قَدِيْمًا وَحَدِيثاً

FALAKAL HAMDU A'LAA IN'AAMIKA A'LAYYA QADEEMAN WA HADEETHAA

So, all praise be to You for Your favors that You conferred upon me in the past and in the present.

فَكَمْ مِنْ كَرْبٍ يَا سَيِّدِيْ قَدْ فَرَّجْتَهٗ

FAKAM MIN KARBIN YAA SAYYIDEE QAD FARRAJTAH

Too many are the agonies that You, my Master, relieved.

وَكَمْ مِنْ غَمٍّ يَا سَيِّدِيْ قَدْ نَفَّسْتَهٗ

WA KAM MIN GHAMMIN YAA SAYYIDEE QAD NAFFASTAH

Too many are the distresses that You, my Master, eased.

وَكَمْ مِنْ هَمٍّ يَا سَيِّدِيْ قَدْ كَشَفْتَهٗ

WA KAM MIN HAMMIN YAA SAYYIDEE QAD KASHAFTAH

Too many are the sufferings that You, my Master, alleviated.

وَكَمْ مِنْ بَلَاءٍ يَا سَيِّدِيْ قَدْ صَرَفْتَهٗ

WA KAM MIN BALAA'IN YAA SAYYIDEE QAD SARAFTAH

Too many are the hardships from which You, my Master, saved me.

وَكَمْ مِنْ عَيْبٍ يَا سَيِّدِيْ قَدْ سَتَرْتَهٗ

WA KAM MIN A'YBIN YAA SAYYIDEE QAD SATARTAH

Too many are the defects that You, my Master, covered.

فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ حَالٍ

FALAKAL HAMDU A'LAA KULLI HAAL

So, all praise be to You for all conditions,

فِيْ كُلِّ مَثْوَىٰ وَزَمَانٍ

FEE KULLI MATHWAA WA ZAMAAN

in every place and time,

وَمُنْقَلَبٍ وَمَقَامٍ

WA MUNQALABIN WA MAQAAM

every circumstance and situation,

وَعَلَىٰ هٰذِهِ الْحَالِ وَكُلِّ حَالٍ

WA A'LAA HAADHIHIL HAALI WA KULLI HAAL

and for the current condition and all conditions.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِيْ مِنْ اَفْضَلِ عِبَادِكَ نَصِيْبًا

ALLAAHUMMAJ A'LNEE MIN AFDALI I'BAADIKA NASEEBAA

O Allah, (please) shower upon me the best share of every good thing

فِيْ هٰذَا الْيَوْمِ مِنْ خَيْرٍ تَقْسِمُهٗ

FEE HAADHAL YAWMI MIN KHAYRIN TAQSIMUH

that You decide for Your servants on this day,

اَوْ ضُرٍّ تَكْشِفُهٗ

AW DURRIN TAKSHIFUH

such as harm that You decide to hold off,

اَوْ سُوْۤءٍ تَصْرِفُهٗ

AW SOO'IN TASRIFUH

evil that You decide to ward off,

اَوْ بَلَاءٍ تَدْفَعُهٗ

AW BALAA'IN TADFA'UH

ordeal that You decide to deter,

اَوْ خَيْرٍ تَسُوْقُهٗ

AW KHAYRIN TASOOQUH

grace that You decide to grant,

اَوْ رَحْمَةٍ تَنْشُرُهَا

AW RAHMATIN TANSHURUHAA

item of mercy that You decide to distribute,

اَوْ عَافِيَةٍ تُلْبِسُهَا

AW A'AFIYATIN TULBISUHAA

and item of wellbeing that You decide to cover up (on one of Your servants),

فَاِنَّكَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ

FA-INNAKA A'LAA KULLI SHAY'IN QADEER

for You verily have power over all things,

وَبِيَدِكَ خَزَائِنُ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ

WA BIYADIKA KHAZAA'INUS SAMAAWAATI WAL ARD

in Your hands lie the hoards of the heavens and the earth,

وَاَنْتَ الْوَاحِدُ الْكَرِيمُ الْمُعْطِي

WA ANTAL WAAHIDUL KAREEMUL MU'TEE

You are verily the One, the All-generous, and the Best Bestower,

الَّذِي لَا يُرَدُّ سَائِلُهٗ

ALLADHEE LAA YURADDU SAA'ILUH

You are the One Whose beseechers are not rejected,

وَلَا يُخَيَّبُ اٰمِلُهٗ

WA LAA YUKHAYYABU AAMILUH

and You are the One Who never disappoint those who put hope in Him,

وَلَا يَنْقُصُ نَائِلُهٗ

WA LAA YANQUSU NAA'ILUH

the One Who is never influenced by the rewards that He bestows upon anyone,

وَلَا يَنْفَدُ مَا عِنْدَهٗ

WA LAA YANFADU MAA I'NDAH

and the One Whose possessions never run out;

بَلْ يَزْدَادُ كَثْرَةً وَطِيباً

BAL YAZDAADU KATHRATAN WA TEEBAA

rather, You always increase in quantity, excellent gift,

وَعَطَاءً وَجُوداً

WA A'TAA'AN WA JOODAA

conferrals, and magnanimity.

وَارْزُقْنِي مِنْ خَزَائِنِكَ الَّتِي لَا تَفْنَىٰ

WARZUQNEE MIN KHAZAA'INIKAL LATEE LAA TAFNAA

(Please) bestow upon me from Your hoards that never come to an end

وَمِنْ رَحْمَتِكَ الْوَاسِعَةِ

WA MIN RAHMATIKAL WAASI'AH

and from Your expansive mercy.

اِنَّ عَطَاءَكَ لَمْ يَكُنْ مَحْظُوْرًا

INNA A'TAA'AKA LAM YAKUN MAHZOORAA

Your conferral shall never be confined

وَاَنْتَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ

WA ANTA A'LAA KULLI SHAY'IN QADEER

and You have power over all things;

بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ

BIRAHMATIKA YAA ARHAMAR RAAHIMEEN

in the name of Your mercy; O most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

Dua Ya Da'im al-Fadl

Ninth: It is recommended to repeat the following supplication ten times:

يَا دَائِمَ الْفَضْلِ عَلَىٰ الْبَرِيَّةِ

YAA DAA'IMAL FADLI A'LAL BARIYYAH

O He Who is ever-Favorer on the beings!

يَا بَاسِطَ الْيَدَيْنِ بِالْعَطِيَّةِ

YAA BAASITAL YADAYNI BIL A'TIYYAH

O He Who is openhandedly Bestower of gifts!

يَا صَاحِبَ الْمَوَاهِبِ السَّنِيَّةِ

YAA SAAHIBAL MAWAAHIBIS SANIYYAH

O He Who is the Giver of sublime donations!

صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهٖ

SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALIH

Bless Muhammad and his Household,

خَيْرِ الْوَرَىٰ سَجِيَّةً

KHAYRIL WARAA SAJIYYAH

the best of all creatures in traits,

وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا يَا ذَا الْعُلَىٰ

WAGHFIR LANAA YAA DHAL U'LAA

and forgive us, O Lord of Highness,

فِي هٰذِهِ الْعَشِيَّةِ

FEE HAADHIHIL A'SHIYYAH

at this evening.

This honorable supplication is also recommended on the night of Eid al-Fitr and the night of Eid al-Adha.

Between the Fajr Nafilah and the Fajr Prayer

Eleventh: In his book al-'Arus, Shaykh Ja'far ibn Ahmad al-Qummi has recorded that Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) said that one who repeats the following one hundred times between the supererogatory (nafilah) and obligatory prayers of Fajr will be given a house in Paradise by Almighty Allah:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظيمِ وَبِحَمْدِهٖ

SUBHAANA RABBIYAL A'ZEEMI WA BIHAMDIH

All glory be to Allah, the All-great and with the Praising of Him;

اَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ رَبِّيْ وَاَتُوبُ اِلَيْهِ

ASTAGHFIRULLAAHA RABBEE WA ATOOBU ILAYH

I pray the forgiveness of Allah, my Lord, and I turn repentant to Him.

Dua Before Dawn on Friday

Twelfth: Shaykh al-Tusi, Sayyid Ibn Tawus and others have mentioned the following supplication, recommended on Friday nights just before dawn (Fajr):

اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهٖ

ALLAAHUMMA SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALIH

O Allah, send blessings to Muhammad and his Household,

وَهَبْ لِيَ الْغَدَاةَ رِضَاكَ

WA HAB LIYAL GHADAATA RIDAAK

grant me Your satisfaction this very early morning,

وَاَسْكِنْ قَلْبِيْ خَوْفَكَ

WA ASKIN QALBEE KHAWFAK

place fear of You in my heart,

وَاقْطَعْهُ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ

WAQTA'HU A'MMAN SIWAAK

and separate it from (leaning to) anyone other than You,

حَتَّىٰ لَا اَرْجُوَ وَلَا اَخَافَ اِلَّا اِيَّاكَ

HATTAA LAA ARJUWA WA LAA AKHAAFA ILLAA IYYAAK

so that I will hope for and fear none save You.

اَللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهٖ

ALLAAHUMMA SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALIH

O Allah, send blessings to Muhammad and his Household

وَهَبْ لِيْ ثَبَاتَ الْيَقينِ

WA HAB LEE THABAATAL YAQEEN

and grant me resolute faith,

وَمَحْضَ الْاِخْلَاصِ

WA MAHDAL IKHLAAS

pure sincerity (to You),

وَشَرَفَ التَّوْحيدِ

WA SHARAFAT TAWHEED

honorable belief in (Your) oneness,

وَدَوَامَ الْاِسْتِقَامَةِ

WA DAWAAMAL ISTIQAAMAH

persistent straightness,

وَمَعْدِنَ الصَّبْرِ

WA MA'DINAS SABR

essential tolerance,

وَالرِّضَا بِالْقَضَاءِ وَالْقَدَرِ

WAR RIDAA BIL QADAA'I WAL QADAR

and satisfaction with (Your) predetermination and decrees.

يَا قَاضِيَ حَوَائِجِ السَّائِلينَ

YAA QAADIYA HAWAA'IJIS SAA'ILEEN

O He Who settles the needs of His beseechers;

يَا مَنْ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِيْ ضَمِيْرِ الصَّامِتِينَ

YAA MAN YA'LAMU MAA FEE DAMEERIS SAAMITEEN

O He Who knows what is in the innermost of the silent;

صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهٖ

SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALIH

send blessings to Muhammad and his Household,

وَاسْتَجِبْ دُعَائِي

WASTAJIB DU'AA'EE

respond to my prayers,

وَاغْفِرْ ذَنْبِيْ

WAGHFIR DHANBEE

forgive my sins,

وَاَوْسِعْ رِزْقِيْ

WA AWSI' RIZQEE

expand my means of livelihood,

وَاقْضِ حَوَاۤئِجِيْ فِي نَفْسِيْ

WAQDI HAWAA'IJEE FEE NAFSEE

and settle the needs of myself

وَاِخْوَانِي فِيْ دِيْنِيْ وَاَهْلِي

WA IKHWAANEE FEE DEENEE WA AHLEE

and my brethren-in-faith and my family members.

اِلٰهِي طُمُوْحُ الْاٰمَالِ قَدْ خَابَتْ اِلَّا لَدَيْكَ

ILAAHEE TUMOOHUL AAMAALI QAD KHAABAT ILLAA LADAYK

O Allah, all ambitions of expectations are disappointed except those addressed to You,

وَمَعَاكِفُ الْهِمَمِ قَدْ تَعَطَّلَتْ اِلَّا عَلَيْكَ

WA MA'AAKIFUL HIMAMI QAD TA'ATTALAT ILLAA A'LAYK

all resolute determinations are paralyzed except those relied upon You,

وَمَذَاهِبُ الْعُقُولِ قَدْ سَمَتْ اِلَّا اِلَيْكَ

WA MADHAAHIBUL U'QOOLI QAD SAMAT ILLAA ILAYK

and all reason-based tendencies are wasted except those directed to You.

فَاَنْتَ الرَّجَاءُ وَاِلَيْكَ الْمُلْتَجَاُ

FA-ANTAR RAJAA'U WA ILAYKAL MULTAJA'

So, You are the ultimate hope and to You is the resort.

يَا اَكْرَمَ مَقْصُوْدٍ وَاَجْوَدَ مَسْؤُولٍ

YAA AKRAMA MAQSOODIN WA AJWADA MAS'OOL

O He Who is the noblest objective and the most magnanimous desired,

هَرَبْتُ اِلَيْكَ بِنَفْسِيْ

HARABTU ILAYKA BINAFSEE

I am fleeing to You from myself.

يَا مَلْجَاَ الْهَارِبِينَ بِاَثْقَالِ الذُّنُوبِ

YAA MALJA'AL HAARIBEENA BI-ATHQAALIDH DHUNOOB

O shelter of those who flee overburdened with the heavy loads of sins,

اَحْمِلُهَا عَلَىٰ ظَهْرِيْ

AHMILUHAA A'LAA ZAHREE

carrying my sins on my back,

لَا اَجِدُ لِيْ اِلَيْكَ شَافِعاً

LAA AJIDU LEE ILAYKA SHAAFI'AA

I cannot find any interceder for me

سِوَىٰ مَعْرِفَتِيْ بِاَنَّكَ اَقْرَبُ مَنْ رَجَاهُ الطَّالِبُونَ

SIWAA MA'RIFATEE BI-ANNAKA AQRABU MAN RAJAAHUT TAALIBOON

except that I know for sure that You are the nearest of all those who are hoped by beseechers

وَاَمَّلَ مَا لَدَيْهِ الرَّاغِبُونَ

WA AMMALA MAA LADAYHIR RAAGHIBOON

and of all those whose donations are expected by the desirous.

يَا مَنْ فَتَقَ الْعُقُولَ بِمَعْرِفَتِهٖ

YAA MAN FATAQAL U'QOOLA BIMA'RIFATIH

O He Who has split the intellects on the recognition of Him,

وَاَطْلَقَ الْاَلْسُنَ بِحَمْدِهٖ

WA ATLAQAL ALSUNA BIHAMDIH

made tongues articulate with the praising of Him

وَجَعَلَ مَا امْتَنَّ بِهٖ عَلَىٰ عِبَادِهٖ فِي كِفَاءٍ لِتَاْدِيَةِ حَقِّهٖ

WA JA'ALA MAM TANNA BIHEE A'LAA I'BAADIHEE FEE KIFAA'IN LITA'DIYATI HAQQIH

and made that which He has conferred upon His servants enough means for the fulfillment of their duties towards Him;

صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهٖ

SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALIH

(please) send blessings to Muhammad and his Household,

وَلَا تَجْعَلْ لِّلشَّيْطَانِ عَلَىٰ عَقْلِيْ سَبِيْلًا

WA LAA TAJ'AL LISH SHAYTAANI A'LAA A'QLEE SABEELAA

do not give Satan any way (of success) over my reason,

وَلَا لِلْبَاطِلِ عَلَىٰ عَمَلِيْ دَلِيْلًا.

WA LAA LIL BAATILI A'LAA A'MALEE DALEELAA

and do not give wrongness a way to reach my deeds.

Prayer of Imam al-Mahdi (a.t.f.s.) on Friday Night

Quoting the book Kunuz al-Najah by Shaykh al-Tabrisi, the author of al-Najm al-Thaqib mentions the following statement from the Holy Region (i.e. Imam al-Mahdi, a.t.f.s.): "Whoever has a request to be granted urgently by Almighty Allah may bathe himself after midnight on a Friday night, go to his place of prayer and offer a two-unit prayer. In the first unit he recites Surah al-Fatihah, and when he reaches this verse he repeats it one hundred times:

اِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَاِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِيْنُ

IYYAAKA NA'BUDU WA IYYAAKA NASTA'EEN

You alone do we worship, and You alone do we ask for help.

He then completes the Surah and recites [Surah al-Tawhid](A116) once. In the ruku' of each unit he repeats the following seven times:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْعَظِيْمِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ

SUBHAANA RABBIYAL A'ZEEMI WA BIHAMDIH

Glory be to my Lord, the Great, and praise belongs to Him.

And in each of the two prostrations of each unit he repeats the following seven times:

سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الْاَعْلٰى وَبِحَمْدِهِ

SUBHAANA RABBIYAL A'LAA WA BIHAMDIH

Glory be to my Lord, the Most High, and praise belongs to Him.

Upon finishing the prayer he says the following supplication; if he does, Almighty Allah will certainly grant his request, unless it involves cutting off relations with his relatives:

اللَّهُمَّ اِنْ اَطَعْتُكَ فَالْمَحْمَدَةُ لَكَ

ALLAAHUMMA IN ATA'TUKA FAL MAHMADATU LAK

O Allah, if I obey You, then praise is due to You,

وَاِنْ عَصَيْتُكَ فَالْحُجَّةُ لَكَ

WA IN A'SAYTUKA FAL HUJJATU LAK

and if I disobey You, then the argument is Yours.

مِنْكَ الرَّوْحُ وَمِنْكَ الْفَرَجُ

MINKAR RAWHU WA MINKAL FARAJ

From You comes ease, and from You comes relief.

سُبْحَانَ مَنْ اَنْعَمَ وَشَكَرَ

SUBHAANA MAN AN'AMA WA SHAKAR

Glory be to Him Who bestows favor and is grateful!

سُبْحَانَ مَنْ قَدَّرَ وَغَفَرَ

SUBHAANA MAN QADDARA WA GHAFAR

Glory be to Him Who decrees and forgives!

اللَّهُمَّ اِنْ كُنْتُ عَصَيْتُكَ

ALLAAHUMMA IN KUNTU A'SAYTUK

O Allah, if I have disobeyed You,

فَاِنِّي قَدْ اَطَعْتُكَ فِي اَحَبِّ الْاَشْيَاءِ اِلَيْكَ

FA-INNEE QAD ATA'TUKA FEE AHABBIL ASHYAA'I ILAYK

I have obeyed You in the thing most beloved to You,

وَهُوَ الْاِيمَانُ بِكَ

WA HUWAL EEMAANU BIK

which is faith in You.

لَمْ اَتَّخِذْ لَكَ وَلَدًا

LAM ATTAKHIDH LAKA WALADAA

I have not taken a son for You,

وَلَمْ اَدْعُ لَكَ شَرِيكًا

WA LAM AD'U LAKA SHAREEKAA

nor have I called on any partner besides You;

مَنّاً مِنْكَ بِهٖ عَلَيَّ

MANNAN MINKA BIHEE A'LAYY

this is Your favor upon me,

لَا مَنّاً مِنِّي بِهٖ عَلَيْكَ

LAA MANNAN MINNEE BIHEE A'LAYK

not my favor upon You.

وَقَدْ عَصَيْتُكَ يَا اِلٰهِي عَلَى غَيْرِ وَجْهِ الْمُكَابَرَةِ

WA QAD A'SAYTUKA YAA ILAAHEE A'LAA GHAYRI WAJHIL MUKAABARAH

I have disobeyed You, my God, not out of arrogance,

وَلَا الْخُرُوجِ عَنْ عُبُودِيَّتِكَ

WA LAL KHUROOJI A'N U'BOODIYYATIK

nor to depart from servitude to You,

وَلَا الْجُحُودِ لِرُبُوبِيَّتِكَ

WA LAL JUHOODI LIRUBOOBIYYATIK

nor to deny Your Lordship;

وَلٰكِنْ اَطَعْتُ هَوَايَ

WA LAAKIN ATA'TU HAWAAY

rather, I followed my desires,

وَاَزَلَّنِي الشَّيْطَانُ

WA AZALLANISH SHAYTAAN

and Satan made me slip.

فَلَكَ الْحُجَّةُ عَلَيَّ وَالْبَيَانُ

FALAKAL HUJJATU A'LAYYA WAL BAYAAN

So Yours is the argument against me, and the clear proof.

فَاِنْ تُعَذِّبْنِي فَبِذُنُوبِي غَيْرَ ظَالِمٍ

FA-IN TU'ADHDHIBNEE FABIDHUNOOBEE GHAYRA ZAALIM

If You punish me, it is for my sins, and You do not wrong me;

وَاِنْ تَغْفِرْ لِي وَتَرْحَمْنِي فَاِنَّكَ جَوَادٌ كَرِيمٌ

WA IN TAGHFIR LEE WA TARHAMNEE FA-INNAKA JAWAADUN KAREEM

and if You forgive me and have mercy on me, then You are the Magnanimous, the Generous.

He then repeats the following as long as one breath lasts:

يَا كَرِيْمُ يَا كَرِيْمُ

YAA KAREEMU YAA KAREEM

O Generous! O Generous!

Then he continues:

يَا آمِنًا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ

YAA AAMINAN MIN KULLI SHAY'

O He Who is safe from everything,

وَكُلُّ شَيْءٍ مِنْكَ خَائِفٌ حَذِرٌ

WA KULLU SHAY'IN MINKA KHAA'IFUN HADHIR

while everything fears You and is wary of You!

اَسْاَلُكَ بِاَمْنِكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ

AS'ALUKA BI-AMNIKA MIN KULLI SHAY'

I ask You by Your being safe from everything

وَخَوْفِ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِنْكَ

WA KHAWFI KULLI SHAY'IN MINK

and by everything's fear of You

اَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

AN TUSALLIYA A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMAD

to send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

وَاَنْ تُعْطِيَنِي اَمَانًا لِنَفْسِي

WA AN TU'TIYANEE AMAANAN LINAFSEE

to grant me security for myself,

وَاَهْلِي وَمَالِي وَوَلَدِي

WA AHLEE WA MAALEE WA WALADEE

my family, my property, my children

وَسَائِرِ مَا اَنْعَمْتَ بِهٖ عَلَيَّ

WA SAA'IRI MAA AN'AMTA BIHEE A'LAYY

and all the favors You have bestowed upon me,

حَتَّى لَا اَخَافَ

HATTAA LAA AKHAAF

so that I fear no one

وَلَا اَحْذَرَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ اَبَدًا

WA LAA AHDHARA MIN SHAY'IN ABADAA

and am wary of nothing, ever.

اِنَّكَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

INNAKA A'LAA KULLI SHAY'IN QADEER

Verily, You have power over all things.

وَحَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

WA HASBUNALLAAHU WA NI'MAL WAKEEL

Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Guardian.

يَا كَافِيَ اِبْرَاهِيمَ نَمْرُودَ

YAA KAAFIYA IBRAAHEEMA NAMROOD

O He Who sufficed Abraham against Nimrod!

وَيَا كَافِيَ مُوسَى فِرْعَوْنَ

WA YAA KAAFIYA MOOSAA FIR'AWN

O He Who sufficed Moses against Pharaoh!

اَسْاَلُكَ اَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

AS'ALUKA AN TUSALLIYA A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMAD

I ask You to send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

وَاَنْ تَكْفِيَنِيْ شَرَّ فُلَانِ بْنِ فُلَانٍ

WA AN TAKFIYANEE SHARRA FULAANIBNI FULAAN

and to spare me the evil of so-and-so, son of so-and-so.

He then mentions by name, with his father's name, the one whose harm he fears, and asks Almighty Allah to repel his harm and save him from his evil; Almighty Allah will certainly do so, if He wills. Then he prostrates, submits his request, and beseeches Almighty Allah earnestly and sincerely. If any believing man or woman offers this prayer and says this supplication, the doors of the heavens will be opened for them, their requests will be granted, and their prayer will be answered at once, whatever it may be. This is one of the favors of Almighty Allah upon us and upon the people."

Radi al-Din Hasan ibn al-Fadl, the son of Shaykh al-Tabrisi, has also reported this prayer in Makarim al-Akhlaq with small differences in the supplication: he adds qad (surely) after kuntu, ahadan (anyone) after akhafa, and as'aluka (I beseech You) after fir'awna.
