Protection from fleas & beasts

Text and Translation

Fourth: The companions of the Holy Prophet (s) are reported, in one of the military expeditions, to have complained to him about fleas that annoyed them. Instructing them, the Holy Prophet (s) said: When you go to sleep, you may say this supplicatory prayer:

اَيُّهَا الْاَسْوَدُ الْوَثَّابُ اَلَّذِىْ لَا يُبَالِىْ غَلَقًا وَ لَا بَابًا عَزَمْتُ عَلَيْكَ بِاُمِّ الْكِتَابِ اَنْ لَا تُؤْذِيَنِىْ وَ اَصْحَابِىْ اِلٰى اَنْ يَذْهَبَ اللَّيْلُ وَ يَجِيْءَ الصُّبْحُ بِمَا جَاۤءَ

AYYUHAL ASWADUL WASSAABU ALLAZEE LAA YUBAALEE GHALAQAN WA LAA BABAN A'ZAMTU A'LAYKA BI-UMMIL KITAABI AN LAA TU'ZIYANEE WA ASHAABEE ILAA AN YAZHABAL LAYLU WA YAJEE-AS SUBHU BIMAA JAA'

O you black leaper, who cares for neither lock nor door! I adjure you by the Mother of the Book not to harm me or my companions until the night passes and the morning comes with whatever it brings.

Fifth: Imam ‘Ali Amir al-Mu’minin (‘a) is reported to have said: When you see a beast, you should say this:

اَعُوْذُ بِرَبِّ دَانِيَالَ وَ الْجُبِّ،مِنْ كُلِّ اَسَدٍ مُسْتَاْصِدٍ

A'OOZU BIRABBI DAANIYAALA WAL JUBB, MIN KULLI ASADIN MUSTA'SID

I seek refuge with the Lord of Daniel and the pit from every ferocious lion.

Imam al-Sadiq (‘a) is reported to have said: When you face a beast, you should recite in its face Ayah al-Kursi and these words:

عَزَمْتُ عَلَيْكَ بِعَزِيْمَةِ اللّٰهِ وَعَزِيْمَةِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ اٰلِهٖ وَ عَزِيْمَةِ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ دَاوُدَ وَ عَزِيْمَةِ اَمِيْرِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ عَلِىِّ بْنِ اَبِىْ طَالِبٍ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ وَالْاَئِمَّةِ الطَّاهِرِيْنَ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ

A'ZAMTU A'LAYKA BI'AZEEMATIL LAAHI WA'AZEEMATI MUHAMMADIN SALLAL LAAHU A'LAYHI WA AALIHEE WA A'ZEEMATI SULAYMAANA BNI DAAWUDA WA A'ZEEMATI AMEERIL MU'MINEENA A'LIYYI BNI ABEE TAALIBIN A'LAYHIS SALAAMU WAL A-IMMATIT TAAHIREENA A'LAYHIMUS SALAAMU MIN BA'DIH

I adjure you by the resolve of Allah, the resolve of Muhammad, Allah's blessings be upon him and his Household, the resolve of Sulayman the son of Dawud, and the resolve of the Commander of the Faithful 'Ali the son of Abu-Talib, peace be upon him, and of the Immaculate Imams after him, peace be upon them.

If you do so, the beast will go away, by the will of Allah the All-exalted.

Sixth: The Holy Prophet (s) is reported to have said to Imam ‘Ali Amir al-Mu’minin (‘a): When you fall in a trouble or an ordeal, you may say the following words. Once you do, Allah the Almighty and All-exalted will ward off from you whatever sort of misfortune He wills:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ وَ لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللهِ الْعَلِىِّ الْعَظِيْمِ.

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEMI WA LAA HAWLA WA LAA QUWWATA ILLAA BIL LAAHIL 'ALIYYIL 'AZEEM.

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful; and there is no might and no power save in Allah, the High, the Great.
