Merits
Ja’far al-Tayyar’s Prayer is as precious as gold, since it is the most magnificent recommended devotional rite. Altogether with its great merits the most important of which is that it erases major sins, this prayer has been reported through authenticated chain of authority. The best time of its performance is the first hours of daylight on Fridays.
Text and Translation
Namaz of Jafar-e-Tayyaar
It consists of four units with two Tashahhuds (i.e. the part of prayers in which the two creeds of Islam are recited) and two Taslims. In the first unit, Surahs al-Faatehah and al-Zalzalah are recited, in the second, Surahs al-Faatehah and al-A’adeyaat, in the third, Surahs al-Faatehah and al-Nasr, and in the fourth, Surahs al-Faatehah and al-Tawheed. In each unit, after the recitation of the Surahs and before the genuflection (ruku'), the following litany (Tasbihat) should be repeated fifteen times:
سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ
SUBHAANAL LAAHE WAL HAMDO LILLAAHE
All glory be to Allah, all praise be to Allah,
وَلَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللهُ وَاللهُ اَكْبَرُ
WA LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO WAL LAAHO AKBARO.
there is no god save Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.
The same litany (Tasbihat) is repeated, yet ten times only, during the Ruku’, after the Ruku’ while standing erect, during the prostration (Sujud), after the first Sajdah, during the second Sajdah, and after the second Sajdah. The same thing is repeated in all of the four units of the prayer. Hence, the litany will have been repeated three hundred times.
Shaykh al-Kulayni has narrated that Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) said to Abu Saeed al-Madaaeni, “May I teach you something that you should recite in Ja’far al-Tayyar’s Prayer?” As the man answered in the affirmative, the Imam (a.s.) said: After you say the Tasbihat in the second Sajdah of the fourth unit, say the following litany:
سُبْحَانَ مَنْ لَبِسَ الْعِزَّ وَالْوَقَارَ
SUBHAANA MAN LABESAL I’ZZA WAL-WAQAARA
Glory be to Him Who has dressed Himself dignity and sobriety!
سُبْحَانَ مَنْ تَعَطَّفَ بِالْمَجْدِ وَتَكَرَّمَ بِهٖ
SUBHAANA MAN TA-A’TTAFA BIL-MAJDE WA TAKARRAMA BEHI
Glory be to Him Who has deigned and condescended with grandeur!
سُبْحَانَ مَنْ لَا يَنْبَغِي التَّسْبِيْحُ اِلَّا لَهٗ
SUBHAANA MAN LAA YANBAGHIT TASBEEHO ILLAA LAHU
Glory be to Him save Whom none is worthy of being glorified!
سُبْحَانَ مَنْ اَحْصٰى كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عِلْمُهٗ
SUBHAANA MAN AHSAA KULLA SHAY-IN I’LMOHU
Glory be to Him Whose knowledge has counted all things!
سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْمَنِّ وَالنِّعَمِ
SUBHAANA ZIL MANNE WAN-NE-A’ME
Glory be to the Lord of bounty and boon!
سُبْحَانَ ذِي الْقُدْرَةِ وَالْكَرَمِ
SUBHAANA ZIL QUDRATE WAL KARAME
Glory be to the Lord of omnipotence and nobility!
اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّيْ اَسْاَلُكَ بِمَعَاقِدِ الْعِزِّ مِنْ عَرْشِكَ
ALLAHUMMA INNE AS-ALOKA BE-MA-A’AQEDIL I’ZZE MIN A’RSHEKA
O Allah, I beseech You in the name of the objects of dignity in Your Throne,
وَمُنْتَهَى الرَّحْمَةِ مِنْ كِتَابِكَ وَاسْمِكَ الْاَعْظَمِ
WA MUNTAHAR RAHMATE MIN KETAABEKA WAS-MEKAL A-A’ZAME
in the name of the utmost of mercy in Your Book, and in the name of Your Greatest Name
وَكَلِمَاتِكَ التَّامَّةِ الَّتِيْ تَمَّتْ صِدْقًا وَعَدْلًا
WA KALEMAATEKAT TAAAM-MATIL LATEE TAMMAT SIDQAN WA A’DLAN
and Your Accomplished Words, which have been accomplished truly and justly,
صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاَهْلِ بَيْتِهٖ.
SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADIN WA AHLE BAYTEHI.
send blessings to Muhammad and his Household.
Then, you may mention your needs in the form of supplication.
Shaykh al-Tusi and Sayyid Ibn Tawus both narrated that al-Mufaddal ibn ‘Umar said that he heard Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) saying the following supplicatory prayer after accomplishing Ja’far al-Tayyar’s Prayer:
يَا رَبِّ
YAA RABBE, YAA RABBE
O LORD, O LORD!
Say it as many times as possible in one breath.
يَا رَبَّاهُ يَا رَبَّاهُ
YAA RABBAAHO, YAA RABBAAHO
O my Lord, O my Lord!
Say it as many times as possible in one breath.
رَبِّ رَبِّ
RABBE, RABBE
Lord, Lord!
Say it as many times as possible in one breath.
يَا اَللهُ يَا اَللهُ
YAA ALLAAHO, YAA ALLAAHO
O Allah, O Allah!
Say it as many times as possible in one breath.
يَا حَيُّ يَا حَيُّ
YAA HAYYO, YAA HAYYO
O Ever-living, O Ever-living!
Say it as many times as possible in one breath.
يَا رَحِيْمُ يَا رَحِيْمُ
YAA RAHEEMO, YAA RAHEEMO
O All-merciful, O All-merciful!
Say it as many times as possible in one breath.
يَا رَحْمٰنُ يَا رَحْمٰنُ
YAA RAHMAANO, YAA RAHMAANO
O All-compassionate, O All-compassionate!
Repeat it seven times.
يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ
YAA ARHAMAR RAAHEMEEN
O Most Merciful of all those who show mercy!
Repeat it seven times.
Then, say the following:
اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّي اَفْتَتِحُ الْقَوْلَ بِحَمْدِكَ
ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AFTATEHUL QAWLA BE HAMDEKA
O Allah, I begin my speech with Your praise,
وَاَنْطِقُ بِالثَّنَاءِ عَلَيْكَ
WA ANTEQO BIS-SANAAA-E A'LAYKA
I speak by extolling You,
وَاُمَجِّدُكَ وَلَا غَايَةَ لِمَدْحِكَ
WA OMAJJEDOKA WA LAA GHAAYATA LE-MADHEKA
and I glorify You, and there is no limit to Your praise.
وَاُثْنِي عَلَيْكَ وَمَنْ يَبْلُغُ غَايَةَ ثَنَائِكَ وَاَمَدَ مَجْدِكَ
WA USNEE A'LAYKA WA MAN YABLOGHO GHAA-YATA SANAAA-EKA WA AMADA MAJDEKA
I laud You—and who can reach the limit of Your laudation or the extent of Your glory?
وَاَنّٰى لِخَلِيْقَتِكَ كُنْهُ مَعْرِفَةِ مَجْدِكَ
WA ANNAA LE-KHALEEQATEKA KUNHO MA'REFATE MAJDEKA
And how can Your creatures ever recognize Your glory [in its actual measure]!
وَاَيَّ زَمَنٍ لَمْ تَكُنْ مَمْدُوحًا بِفَضْلِكَ
WA AYYA ZAMANIN LAM TAKUN MAMDOOHAN BE-FAZLEKA
And how can there be any moment for which You do not deserve praise due to Your favors
مَوْصُوفًا بِمَجْدِكَ عَوَّادًا عَلٰى الْمُذْنِبِيْنَ بِحِلْمِكَ
MAWSOOFAN BE-MAJDEKA A'WWAADAN A'LAL MUZNEBEENA BE-HILMEKA
and in which You are not ascribed to glory and in which You do not incessantly treat the sinful with Your forbearance?
تَخَلَّفَ سُكَّانُ اَرْضِكَ عَنْ طَاعَتِكَ
TAKHALLAFA SUKKAANO ARDHEKA A'N TAA-A'TEKA
Although the inhabitants of Your earth have fallen behind in being obedient to You,
فَكُنْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَطُوفًا بِجُودِكَ جَوَادًا بِفَضْلِكَ
FA-KUNTA A'LAYHIM A'TOOFAN BE JOODEKA JAWAADAN BE FAZLEKA
You have been kind to them out of Your munificence, munificent out of Your favors,
عَوَّادًا بِكَرَمِكَ يَا لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ
A'WWAADAN BE KARAMEKA YAA LAA ELAAHA ILLAA ANTAL
and liberal out of Your generosity. O He save Whom there is no god!
الْمَنَّانُ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْاِكْرَامِ
MANNAANO ZUL JALAALE WAL IKRAAM.
O All-benevolent! O Lord of Glory and Honour!
Special Namaz
Al-Mufazzal then added: Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) then said to me, “If you have a significant request and you want it to be granted, you may offer this prayer, say this supplication, and implore Almighty Allah to respond to you. If you do, it will be granted, Allah willing.”
Shaykh al-Tusi has narrated that Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) recommended the following supplicatory prayer for having one’s requests granted:
Observe fasting on consecutive Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. At Thursday evening, give half bushel of food for ten poor people as alms. On Friday, wash yourself and go out to a wasteland and offer therein Ja’far al-Tayyaar’s Prayer sticking your knees to the ground after you uncover them. You may then say the following supplicatory prayer:
يَا مَنْ اَظْهَرَ الْجَمِيْلَ وَسَتَرَ الْقَبِيْحَ
YAA MAN AZHARAL JAMEELA WA SATARAL QABEEHA
O He Who has shown only goodness and concealed the evil (deeds of His servants)!
يَا مَنْ لَمْ يُؤَاخِذْ بِالْجَرِيْرَةِ
YAA MAN LAM YO-AAKHIZ BIL-JAREERATE
O You who do not seize based on crime
وَلَمْ يَهْتِكِ السِّتْرَ يَا عَظِيْمَ الْعَفْوِ
WA LAM YAHTEKIS SITRA YAA A'ZEEMAL A'FWE
and do not tear the veil; O Great in Forgiveness;
يَا حَسَنَ التَّجَاوُزِ يَا وَاسِعَ الْمَغْفِرَةِ
YAA HASANAT TAJAAWOZE YAA WAASE-A'L MAGHFERATE
O Excellent in Overlooking; O Vast in Pardon;
يَا بَاسِطَ الْيَدَيْنِ بِالرَّحْمَةِ
YAA BAASETAL YADAYNE BIR-RAHMATE
O Extender of hands with mercy;
يَا صَاحِبَ كُلِّ نَجْوٰى وَمُنْتَهٰى كُلِّ شَكْوٰى
YAA SAAHEBA KULLE NAJWAA WA MUNTAHAA KULLE SHAKWAA
O Listener of every secret and Goal of every complaint;
يَا مُقِيْلَ الْعَثَرَاتِ يَا كَرِيْمَ الصَّفْحِ
YAA MOQEELAL A’SARAATE YAA KAREEMAS SAF-HE
O Granter of reprieves from lapses; O Noble in Forbearing;
يَا عَظِيْمَ الْمَنِّ يَا مُبْتَدِئًا بِالنِّعَمِ قَبْلَ اسْتِحْقَاقِهَا
YAA A'ZEEMAL MANNE YAA MUBTADEAN BIN-NE-A'ME QABLAS TEH-QAAQEHAA
O Great in Bestowal; O Initiator of blessings before they are deserved;
يَا رَبَّاهُ يَا رَبَّاهُ يَا رَبَّاهُ،
YAA RABBAAHO YAA RABBAAHO YAA RABBAAHO.
O My Lord, O My Lord, O My Lord.
Repeat this statement ten times.
يَا اَللهُ يَا اَللهُ يَا اَللهُ
YAA ALLAAHO YAA ALLAAHO YAA ALLAAHO
O Allah, O Allah, O Allah!
Repeat it ten times, too.
يَا سَیِّدَاهُ يَا سَيِّدَاهُ
YAA SAYYEDAAHO YAA SAYYEDAAHO
O my Master, O my Master!
Repeat it ten times.
يَا مَوْلَايَاهُ،يَا مَوْلَايَاهُ
YAA MAWLAAYAAHO, YAA MAWLAAYAAHO
O my Chief, O my Chief!
Repeat it ten times.
يَا رَجَآئَاهُ
YAA RAJAAA-AAHO
O my hope!
Repeat it ten times.
يَا غِيَاثَاهُ
YAA GHEYAASAAHO
O my succor!
Repeat it ten times.
يَا غَايَةَ رَغَبَتَاهُ
YAA GHAAYATA RAGHBATAAHO
O ultimate of my desire!
Repeat it ten times.
يَا رَحْمٰنُ
YAA RAHMAANO
O All-beneficent!
Repeat it ten times.
يَا رَحِيْمُ
YAA RAHEEMO
O All-merciful!
Repeat it ten times.
يَا مُعْطِىَ الْخَيْرَاتِ
YAA MO’TEYAL KHAYRAATE
O Giver of fortunes!
Repeat it ten times.
صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ كَثِيْرًا طَيِّبًا
SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADIN WA AALE MOHAMMADIN KASEERAN TAYYEBAN
Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad as much as
كَاَفْضَلِ مَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلٰى اَحَدٍ مِنْ خَلْقِكَ
KA-AFZALE MAA SALLAYTA A’LAA AHADIN MIN KHALQEKA
and as decently as You have ever blessed any of Your creatures.
You may then mention your requests.
Many narrations have mentioned emphatically fasting on these three days and then performance of a two-unit prayer at midday (zohr) on Friday so that one’s requests are granted.
