The trustworthy Shaykh al-Kulayni, may Allah have mercy upon him, reports in al-Kafi that 'Abd al-Rahim al-Qasir said: I once visited Imam al-Sadiq (a) and said, "May Allah accept me as ransom for you! I have invented a formula of supplicatory prayer."

The Imam (a) answered, "Save me from your inventions! Whenever a disaster befalls you, you should have recourse to the Messenger of Allah and offer a two-unit prayer and dedicate it to him, peace be upon him and his Household."

"How can I do that?" I asked.

The Imam (a) answered, "You should bathe yourself and offer a two-unit prayer, beginning it with the prefatory part of obligatory prayers, and say the tashahhud statement of obligatory prayers. When you finish saying the tashahhud and taslim statements, you should say the following:

ALLAAHUMMA ANTAS SALAAMU WA MINKAS SALAAMU WA ILAYKA YARJI-U'S SALAAM, ALLAAHUMMA SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMADIN WA BALLIGH ROOHA MUHAMMADIM MINNIS SALAAMA WA ARWAAHAL A-IMMATIS SAADIQEENA SALAAMEE WARDUD A'LAYYA MINHUMUS SALAAM, WAS SALAAMU A'LAYHIM WA RAHMATULLAAHI WA BARAKAATUH

O Allah, You are Peace, and from You is peace, and unto You returns peace. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, and convey from me a greeting of peace to the spirit of Muhammad, and my peace to the spirits of the truthful Imams, and return their peace to me; and peace be upon them, and Allah's mercy and blessings.

ALLAAHUMMA INNA HAATAYNIR RAK-A'TAYNI HADIYYATUM MINNEE ILAA RASOOLILLAAHI SALLALLAAHU A'LAYHI WA AALIHI, FA-ASIBNEE A'LAYHIMAA MAA AMMALTU WA RAJAWTU FEEKA WA FEE RASOOLIKA YAA WALIYYAL MU-MINEEN

O Allah, these two units of prayer are a gift from me to the Messenger of Allah, Allah's blessings be upon him and his Household; so reward me for them with what I have hoped for and wished from You and from Your Messenger, O Guardian of the believers.

You may then prostrate and repeat the following forty times:

YAA HAYYU YAA QAYYOOM, YAA HAYYAL LAA YAMOOT, YAA HAYYAL LAA ILAAHA ILLAA ANT, YAA ZAL JALAALI WAL IKRAAM, YAA ARHAMAR RAAHIMEEN

O Living, O Self-subsisting; O Living Who does not die; O Living, there is no god except You; O Possessor of Majesty and Honor; O most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

You may then put your right cheek on the ground and repeat the aforesaid supplication forty times; then put your left cheek on the ground and repeat it forty more times.

Then raise your head from prostration, extend your hands towards the sky, and repeat the supplication forty times. Then pull your hands to your neck, point with your forefinger, and repeat the supplication forty times. Then hold your beard with your left hand, weep or try to weep, and say the following:

YAA MUHAMMADU YAA RASOOLALLAAHI ASHKOO ILALLAAHI WA ILAYKA HAAJATEE WA ILAAA AHLI BAYTIKAR RAASHIDEENA HAAJATEE WA BIKUM ATAWAJJAHU ILALLAAHI FEE HAAJATEE

O Muhammad, O Messenger of Allah, I complain to Allah and to you of my need, and to your rightly-guided Household of my need, and through you all do I turn towards Allah in my need.

You should then prostrate and repeat the following word for as long as one breath can take:

YAA ALLAAH YAA ALLAAH

O Allah, O Allah.

You may then say the following:

SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMAD

Send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad.

You may now mention your need. If you do so, Imam al-Sadiq (a) added, I guarantee that Allah the Almighty and Majestic will settle your need before you leave your place."
