Namaz-e-Shab

Text and Translation

First Recite 8 rak’ats prayer (in units of 2 rak’ats each) with the intention of reciting the Naafelah of Namaaz-e-Shab. In the first rak’at, after surah Hamd recite surah Tawheed once and in the second rak’at after surah Hamd, recite surah Kaaferoon once.

In the remaining six rak’ats recite any short surah after surah Hamd. After completing 8 rak'ats of Naafelah recite Tasbih of Faatemah Zahra (s.a.). Thereafter recite 2 rak’ats ‘Namaaz-e-Shaf’. In the first rakat after surah Hamd recite surah Tawheed once. In the second rak’at after surah Hamd recite surah Falaq once.

After ‘Namaaz-e-Shaf’ recite the following dua:

اِلٰهِی تَعَرَّضَ لَكَ فِیْ ھٰذَا اللَّیْلِ الْمُتَعَرِّضُوْنَ

ELAAHEE TA-A’RRAZA LAKA FEE HAAZAL LAYLIL MOTA-A’RREZOON

O Allah! Tonight, the seekers of favors, restless and eager, present themselves to You,

وَقَصَدَكَ الْقَاصِدُوْنَ

WA QASADAKA FEEHIL QAASEDOON

the determined aspirers have You in mind,

وَاَمَّلَ فَضْلَكَ وَمَعْرُوْفَكَ الطَّالِبُوْنَ

WA AMMALA FAZLAKA WA MA’ROOFAQAT TAALEBOON

and those who make requests look long and attentively at Your obligingness and kindness.

وَلَكَ فِیْ ھٰذَا اللَّیْلِ نَفَحَاتٌ وَجَوَآئِزُ

WA LAKA FEE HAAZAL LAYLE NAFAHAATUN

You, at this night, give gifts, bounties beyond measure,

وَعَطَایَا وَمَوَاھِبُ

WA JAWAAA-EZO WA A’TAAYAA WA MAWAAHEBO

free donations, and favors

تَمُنُّ بِھَا عَلٰی مَنْ تَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ

TAMUNNO BEHAA A’LAA MAN TASHAAA-O MIN E’BAADEKA

to those whom You will from among Your servants when they make a request,

وَتَمْنَعُھَا مَنْ لَّمْ تَسْبِقُ لَهُ الْعِنَایَۃُ مِنْكَ

WA TAMNA-O’HAA MAN LAM TASBEQO LAHUL E’NAAYATO MINKA

and You say no to those who do not try to get in advance (i.e. remain behind) for obtaining the bounties from You.

وَھَا اَنَاذَا عُبَیْدُكَ الْفَقِیْرُ اِلَیْكَ

WA HAA ANAA ZAA O’BAIDOKAL FAQEERO ELAYKAL

I, a modest needy bondman,

الْمُؤَمِّلُ فَضْلَكَ وَمَعْرُوْفَكَ

MO-AMMELO FAZLAKA WA MA’ROOFAKA

am hopeful of Your obligingness and kindness.

فَاِنْ كُنْتَ یَا مَوْلَایَ

FA-IN KUNTA YAA MAWLAAYA

Indeed, if You, O My Master,

تَفَضَّلْتَ فِیْ ھٰذِهٖ اللَّیْلَۃِ

TAFAZZALTA FEE HAAZEHIL LAYLATE

bestows a favor on any one, at this night,

عَلٰیٓ اَحَدٍ مِّنْ خَلْقِكَ

A’LAA AHADIM MIN KHALQEKA

from among Your created beings,

وَعُدْتَ عَلَیْهِ بِعَآئِدَۃٍ مِّنْ عَطْفِكَ

WA U’DTA A’LAYHE BE-A’AEDATIM MIN A’TFEKA

and multiply profits and gains for him out of Your love and affection,

فَصَلِّ عَلٰی مُحَمَّدٍ وَّاٰلِ مُحَمّدٍ

FA-SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADIN WA AALE MOHAMMADENIT

please send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad:

الطَّیِّبِیْنَ الطَّاھِرِیْنَ

TAYYEBEENAT TAAHEREENAL

the pure, the immaculate,

الْخَّیِّرِیْنَ الْفَاضِلِیْنَ

KHAYYEREE-NAL FAAZELEENA

the virtuous, and the righteous,

وَجُدْ عَلَیَّ بِطَولِكَ وَمَعْرُوْفِكَ

WA JUD A’LAYYA BE-TAWLEYA WA MA’ROOFEKA

and then give me abundantly on account of Your liberality and obligingness,

یَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ

YAA RABBAL A’ALAMEENA

O Lord of the worlds!

وَصَلَّی اللّٰهُ عَلٰی مُحَمَّدٍ خَاتَمِ النَّبِیِّیْنَ

WA SALLAL LAAHO A’LAA MOHAMMADIN KHAATAMIN NABIYYEENA

May Allah send blessings to Muhammad, the seal of the Prophets,

وَاٰلِهِ الطَّاھِرِیْنَ

WA AALEHIT TAAHEREENA

and upon his Household, the immaculate,

وَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِیْمًا

WA SALLAMA TASLEEMAA

and may He exalt them very much.

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ حَمِیْدٌ مَجِیْدٌ

INNAL LAAH HAMEEDUM MAJEED

Verily, Allah is worthy of all praise, full of all glory.

اَللَّھُمَّ اِنِّیْ اَدْعُوْكَ كَمَآ اَمَرْتَ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AD-O’OKA KAMAA AMARTA

O Allah, I am praying You as You ordered me to do;

فَاسْتَجِبْ لِیْ كَمَا وَعَدْتَ

FAS-TAJBI LEE KAMAA WA-A’DTA

so, (please) respond to me as You promised.

اِنَّكَ لَا تُخْلِفُ الْمِیْعَادَ.

INNAKA LAA TUKHLEFUL MEE-A’AD.

Verily, You never break Your promise.

After this recite one rak’at Namaaz-e-watr, in which, after surah Hamd, recite surah Tawheed, surah Falaq and surah Naas once each. Then raise your hands and recite the following Dua in Qunoot:

لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ الْحَلِیْمُ الْكَرِیْمُ

LAA ELAAHA ILAL LAAHUL HALEEMUL KAREEM

There is none worth worshipping but Allah Who is Forbearing and Generous

لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ الْعَلِیُّ الْعَظِیْمُ

LAA ELAAHA ILAL LAAHUL A’LIYYUL A’ZEEM

There is none worth worshipping but Allah Who is Most High and Great

سُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ رَبِّ السَّمٰوٰتِ السَّبْعِ

SUBHAANAL LAAHE RABBIS SAMAAWAATIS SAB-E’

Glory be to Allah, Who is the Sustainer of the seven heavens

وَرَبِّ الْاَرَضِیْنَ السَّبْعِ

WA RABBUL ARZEENAS SAB-E’

and of the seven earth

وَمَا فِیْھِنَّ وَمَا بَیْنَھُنَّ

WA MAA FEEHINNA WA MAA BAYNAHUNNA

in them, and between them,

وَمَا فَوْقَھُنَّ وَمَا تَحْتَحُنَّ

WA MAA FAWQAHUNNA WA MAA TAHTAHUNNA

above them, beneath them

وَھُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِیْمِ

WA HOWA RABBUL A’RSHIL A’ZEEM

And Who is the Lord of the great ‘Arsh (Divine Center of Authority & Power)

وَسَلَامٌ عَلٰی الْمُرْسَلِیْنَ

WA SALAAMUN A’LAL MURSALEEN

And peace be on the apostles.

وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِیْنَ

WAL HAMDO LILLAAHE RABBIL A’ALAMEEN

And all praise for Allah, the Lord of the worlds.

یَا اللّٰهُ الَّذِیْ لَیْسَ كَمِثْلِهٖ شَیْءٌ

YAA ALLAAHUL LAZEE LAYSA KAMISLEHI SHAYUN

O Allah! The One nothing is like Him

وَھُوَ السَّمِیْعُ الْبَصِیْرُ

WA HOWAS SAMEE-U’L BASEER

and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.

وَصَلِّ عَلٰی مُحَمَّدٍ وَّآلِ مُحَمَّدٍ.

WA SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADIN WA AALE MOHAMMAD.

And blessings be upon Muhammad and the progeny of Muhammad.

Recite the following 70 or 100 times:

اَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ رَبِّیْ وَاَتُوْبُ اِلَیْهِ.

ASTAGHFERUL LAAHA RABBEE WA ATOOBO ELAYHE.

I seek forgiveness of Allah my Lord and I turn to Him

Recite the following 7 times:

اَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ الَّذِیْ لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا ھُوَ الْحَیُّ القَیُّوْمُ بِجَمِیْعِ ظُلْمِیْ وَجُرْمِیْ وَاِسْرَافِیْ عَلٰی نَفْسِیْ وَاَتُوْبُ اِلَیْهِ.

ASTAGHFERUL LAAHAL LAZEE LAA ELAAHA ILLAA HOWAL HAYYUL QAYYOOMO BE-JAMEE-E' ZULMEE WA JURMEE WA ISRAAFEE A'LAA NAFSEE WA ATOOBO ELAYHE.

I seek forgiveness from Allah, besides Whom there is no god, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence, for all my wrongdoing, my sin, and my excesses upon myself, and I repent to Him.

Recite 7 times:

ھٰذَا مَقَامُ الْعَائِذِ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ.

HAAZAA MAQAAMUL A'AEZE BEKA MENAN NAARE.

This is the position of one who seeks refuge in You from the fire [of Hell]

Recite the following 300 times:

اَلْعَفْوَ

AL-AFWA

(I ask for) forgiveness

Then say:

رَبِّ اغْفِرْ لِيْ وَارْحَمْنِيْ وَتُبْ عَلَيَّ

RABBIGH FIR LEE WAR HAMNEE WA TUB A’LAYYA

O my Lord, (please) forgive me, have mercy upon me, and accept my repentance,

اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْمُ

INNAKA ANTAT TAWWABUL GHAFOORUR RAHEEMO

for You are surely the Oft-Returning, the All-forgiving, and the All-merciful.

Mention names of 40 living or deceased believers one by one and say:

اَللّٰھُمَّ اغفِرْ لِھٰذَا...

ALLAAHUMMAGH FIR LE-HAAZAA...

O Allah, forgive (Name)…

This dua is to be recited after Namaz-e-Shab:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ.

اُنَاجِیْكَ یَا مَوْجُوْدًا فِیْ كُلِّ مَكَانٍ

ONAAJEEKA YAA MAWJOODAN FEE KULLE MAKAANIN

O One who is present everywhere.

لَعَلَّكَ تَسْمَعُ نِدَآئِیْ

LA-A’LLAKA TASMA-O NEDAAA-EE

I beseech You (and) hoping that You will listen to my voice,

فَقَدْ عَظُمَ جُرْمِیْ وَقَلَّ حَیَآئِیْ

FAQAD A’ZOMA JURMEE WA QALLA HAYAA-EE

because surely, my sin is big and my feeling of guilt has lessened.

مَوْلَایَ یَا مَوْلَایَ اَیَّ الْاَھْوَالِ اَتَذَكَرُ وَاَیَّھَا اَنْسٰی

MAWLAAYA YAA MAWLAAYA AYYAL AHWAALE ATAZAKKARO WA AYYAHA ANSAA

My Lord, My Lord! How many fear do I recount, how many fear do I forget.

وَلَوْ لَمْ یَكُنْ اِلاَّ الْمَوْتُ لَكَفٰی

WA LAW LAM YAKUN ILLAL MAWTO LAKAFAA

It there was no fear except fear of death, that fear was enough.

كَیْفَ وَمَا بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ اَعْظَمُ وَاَدْھٰی

KAYFA WA MAA BA’DAL MAWTE A-A’ZAMO WA ADHAA

The fear of after death is very big and very severe.

مَولاَیَ یَا مَوْلاَیَ حَتّٰی مَتٰی وَاِلٰي مَتٰي

MAWLAAYA YAA MAWLAAYA HATTAA MATAA WA ELAA MATAA

My Master and My Lord! How many times should I say that I want You should be pleased with me.

اَقُوْلُ لَكَ الْعُتْبٰی مَرَّۃً بَعْدَ اُخْرٰی

AQOOLO LAKAL UTBAA MARRATAN BA’DA UKHRAA

I say this again and again.

ثُمَّ لاَ تَجِدُ عِنْدِیْ صِدْقًا وَلاَ وَفَآءً

SUMMA LAA TAJEDO I’NDEE SIDQAN WA LAA WAFAAA-AN

Even then, You do not get truth and acceptance of faithfulness from me!

فَیَاغَوْثَاهُ ثُمَّ وَاغَوْثَاهُ بِكَ

FA-YAA GHAWSAA-HO SUMMA WAA GHAWSAA-HO BEKA

So give me protection. There is no protection save from You.

یَا اَللّٰهُ مِنْ ھَوًی قَدْ غَلَبَنِیْ

YAA ALLAAHO MIN HAWAN QAD GHALABANEE

O Allah, safeguard me from the desires of the soul which have overpowered me,

وَمِنْ عَدُوٍّ قَدِ اسْتَكْلَبَ عَلَیَّ

WA MIN A’DUWWIN QADIS TAKLABA A’LAYYA

safeguard me from the enemy who is ready to attack me,

وَمِنْ دُنْیَا قَدْ تَزَیَّنَتْ لِیْ

WA MIN DUNYAA QAD TAZAYYANAT LEE

protect me from the evils of the world

وَمِنْ نَفْسٍ اَمَّارَۃٍ بِالسُّوٓءِ اِلاَّ مَا رَحِمَ رَبِّیْ

WA MIN NAFSIN AMMAARATIN BIS-SOOO-E ILLAA MAA RAHEMA RABBEE

and the evil of the soul which has disobeyed me. Except that You have mercy on me.

مَوْلاَیَ یَا مَوْلاَیَ اِنْ كُنْتَ رَحِمْتَ مِثْلِی فَارْحَمْنِیْ

MAWLAAYA YAA MAWLAAYA IN KUNTA RAHIMTA MISLEE FARHAMNEE

My Lord, My Lord! if You have shown Mercy on someone like me, then have mercy on me.

وَاِنْ كُنْتَ قَبِلْتَ مِثْلِیْ فَاقْبَلْنِیْ

WA IN KUNTA QABILTA MISLEE FAQBALNEE

If you have accepted repentance of someone like me, then forgive me.

یَا قَبِلَ السَّحَرَۃِ اِقْبَلْنِیْ

YAA KAABELAS-SAHARATE IQBALNEE

O Acceptor of morning Dua. Accept my Dua.

یَا مَنْ لَمْ اَزَلْ اَتَعَرَّفُ مِنْهُ الْحُسْنٰی

YAA MAN LAM AZAL ATA-A’RRAFO MINHUL HUSNAA

O whom I always consider goodness.

یَا مَنْ یُغَذِّیْنِیْ بِالنِّعَمِ صَبَاحًا وَمَسَآءً

YAA MAN YOGAZZEENEE BIN NEA’ME SABAAHAN WA MASAAHAN

O who provides me sustenance morning and evening.

اِرْحَمْنِیْ یَوْمَ اٰتِیْكَ فَرْدًا شَاخِصًا اِلَیْكَ بَصَرِیْ

IRHAMNEE YAWMAA AATEEKA FARDAN SHAAKHESAN ELAYKA BASAREE

Have mercy on me on the day when I come to You alone,

مُقَلَّدًا عَمَلِیْ قَدْ تَبَرَّءَ جَمِیْعُ الْخَلْقِ مِنِّیْ

MOQALLADAN A’MALEE QAD TABARRA-A JAMEE-U’L KHALQE MINNEE

my deeds hanging around my neck, at a time when everyone will be disgusted with me,

نَعَمْ وَاَبِیْ وَاُمِّیْ وَمَنْ كَانَ لَهٗ كَدِّیْ وَسَعْیِیْ

NA-A’M WA ABEE WA UMMEE WA MAN KAANA LAHU QADDEE WA SA’YEE

so much so that even my father and mother for whom I had tried and worked (they also will be disgusted with me)

فَاِنْ لَمْ تَرْحَمْنِیْ فَمَنْ یَرْحَمُنِیْ

FA-IN LAM TARHAMNEE FA-MAN YARHAMONEE

So (that day) if You will not show mercy on me, who will show mercy on me?

وَمَنْ یُوْنِسُ فِیْ الْقَبْرِ وَحْشَتِیْ

WA MAN YOONESO FIL QABRE WAHSHATEE

Who will be my well-wisher in the loneliness of the grave?

وَمَنْ یُنْطِقُ لِسَانِیْ اِذَا خَلَوْتُ بِعَمَلِیْ وَسَاءَلْتَنِیْ

WA MAN YUNTEQO LESAANEE EZAA KHALAWTO BE-A’MALEE WA SAA-ALTANEE

Who will activate my tongue (give me strength of speak), when I will be coming with my deeds and You will ask me about my life

عَمَّا اَنْتَ اَعْلَمُ بِهٖ مِنِّیْ

A’MMAA ANTA A-A’LAMO BEHI MINNEE

with which You are more familiar.

فَاِنْ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ فَاَیْنَ الْمَحْرَبُ مِنْ عَدْلِكَ

FA-IN QULTO NA-A’M FA-AYNAL MAHRABO MIN A’DLEKA

So, if I accept my deeds, where is the place to run away from Your Justice.

وَاِنْ قُلْتُ لَمْ اَفْعَلْ قُلْتَ اَلَمْ اَكُنِ الشَّاھِدَ عَلَیْكَ

WA IN QULTO LAM AF-A’L QULTA ALAM AKANISH SHAAHEDA A’LAYKA

If I deny me deeds, You will say ‘Was I not watching your deeds?’

فَعَفْوُكَ عَفْوُكَ یَا مَوْلاَیَ قَبْلَ سَرَابِیْلِ الْقَطِرَانِ

FA-A’FWOKA A’FWOK YAA MAWLAAYA QABLA SARAABEELIL QATERAANE

So, forgive me, O my Lord, my Master. Forgive me before I wear the dress of Hell.

عَفْوُكَ عَفْوُكَ یَا مَوْلاَیَ قَبْلَ جَھَنَّمَ وَالنِّیْرَانِ

A’FWOKA A’FWOK YAA MAWLAAYA QABLA JAHANNAMA WAN NEERAANE

O my Lord, forgive me before the Hell and Fire,

عَفْوُكَ عَفْوُكَ یَا مَوْلاَیَ قَبْلَ اَنْ تُغَلَّ الْاَیْدِیْ اِلٰی الْاَعْنَاقِ

A’FWOKA A’FWOK YAA MAWLAAYA QABLA AN TOGHALLAL AYDEE ELAL A-A’NAAKE

O my Lord, forgive me before my hands are tied towards my neck,

یَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِیْنَ وَخَیْرَ الْغَافِرِیْنَ.

YAA ARHAMAR RAAHEMEEN WA KHAYRAL GHAAFEREEN.

O the most Merciful and the most Benevolent.
