First ten days of Zilhajj

Text and Translation

Salaat between Maghrib and Isha

At each of these ten nights, it is recommended to offer a two unit prayer between the Maghrib and Isha’ obligatory prayers and to recite at each unit [Surah al-Faatehah](A5) once, [Surah al-Tawheed](A116) once, and the following verse (7/142):

وَوَاعَدْنَا مُوْسٰى ثَلَاثِيْنَ لَيْلَةً

WA WAA-A’DNAA MOOSAA SALAASEENA LAYLATAN

And We appointed with Moses a time of thirty nights

وَاَتْمَمْنَاهَا بِعَشْرٍ

WA ATMAMNAAHAA BE-A’SHRIN

and completed them with ten more,

فَتَمَّ مِيْقَاتُ رَبِّهٖ اَرْبَعِيْنَ لَيْلَةً

FA-TAMMA MEEQAATO RABBEHI ARBA-E’ENA LAYLATAN

so the appointed time of his Lord was complete forty nights,

وَقَالَ مُوْسٰى لِاَخِيْهِ هَارُوْنَ

WA QAALA MOOSAA LE-AKHEEHE HAAROONAKH

and Moses said to his brother Aaron:

اخْلُفْنِيْ فِيْ قَوْمِيْ وَاَصْلِحْ

LUFNEE FEE QAWMEE WA ASLEH

Take my place among my people, and act well

وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ سَبِيْلَ الْمُفْسِدِيْنَ.

WA LAA TATTA-BE’ SABEELAL MUFSEDEEN.

and do not follow the way of the mischief-makers.

The reward of offering this prayer is to participate in the rewards of those who go on Hajj.

Dua after Fajr and Before Magrib

It is recommended to say the following supplicatory prayer, which is reported by Shaykh al-Tusi and Sayyid Ibn Tawus from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.), after the obligatory Fajr and Maghrib Prayers since the first day of Zilhajj and up to the eve of the ‘Arafat Night, the ninth of Zilhajj:

اَللّٰهُمَّ هٰذِهِ الْاَيَّامُ الَّتِيْ

ALLAAHUMMA HAAZEHIL AYYAAMUL LATEE

O Allah, these days that

فَضَّلْتَهَا عَلَى الْاَيَّامِ وَشَرَّفْتَهَا

FAZZALTAHAA A'LAL AYYAAME WA SHARRAFTAHAA

You have preferred and favored on other days,

قَدْ بَلَّغْتَنِيْهَا بِمَنِّكَ وَرَحْمَتِكَ

QAD BALLAGHTANEEHAA BEMANNEKA WA RAHMATEKA

You have allowed me to attain them out of Your favor and mercy;

فَاَنْزِلْ عَلَيْنَا مِنْ بَرَكَاتِكَ

FA-ANZIL A'LAYNAA MIN BARAKAATEKA

so, (please) descend on us Your blessings

وَاَوْسِعْ عَلَيْنَا فِيْهَا مِنْ نَعْمَاۤئِكَ

WA AW-SEA' A'LAYNAA FEEHAA MIN NA'MAAA-EKA

and expand for us Your boons.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّيْۤ اَسْاَلُكَ اَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَّاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS-ALOKA AN TOSALLEYA A'LAA MOHAMMADIWN WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

O Allah, I beseech you to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

وَاَنْ تَهْدِيَنَا فِيْهَا لِسَبِيْلِ الْهُدٰى

WA AN TAHDEYANAA FEEHAA LESABEELIL HODAA

and to guide us on these days to the path of guidance,

وَالْعَفَافِ وَالْغِنٰى

WAL A'FAAFE WAL GHENAA

chastity, sufficiency,

وَالْعَمَلِ فِيْهَا بِمَا تُحِبُّ وَتَرْضٰىۤ

WAL A'MALE FEEHAA BEMAA TOHIBBO WA TARZAA

and doing that which You like and please.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّيْۤ اَسْاَلُكَ يَا مَوْضِعَ كُلِّ شَكْوٰى

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS-ALOKA YAA MAWZE-A' KULLE SHAKWAA

O Allah, I beseech You, O object of all complaints,

وَيَا سَامِعَ كُلِّ نَجْوٰى

WA YAA SAAME-A' KULLE NAJWAA

O Hearer of all confidential talks,

وَيَا شَاهِدَ كُلِّ مَلَاٍ

WA YAA SHAAHEDA KULLE MALAA-IN

O Attendant in all sessions,

وَيَا عَالِمَ كُلِّ خَفِيَّةٍ

WA YAA A'ALEMA KULLE KHAFIYYATIN

O Knower of all hidden matters,

اَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

AN TOSALLEYA A'LAA MOHAMMADINW WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

وَاَنْ تَكْشِفَ عَنَّا فِيْهَا الْبَلَاۤءَ

WA AN TAKSHEFA A'NNAA FEEHAL BALAAA-A

relieve us from all hardships on these days,

وَتَسْتَجِيْبَ لَنَا فِيْهَا الدُّعَاۤءَ

WA TASTAJEEBA LANAA FEEHAD DO-A'AA-A

respond to our prayers,

وَتُقَوِّيَنَا فِيْهَا وَتُعِيْنَنَا

WA TOQAWWEYANAA FEEHAA WA TO-E'ENANAA

grant us power, aid us,

وَتُوَفِّقَنَا فِيْهَا لِمَا تُحِبُّ رَبَّنَا وَتَرْضٰى

WA TOWAFFEQANAA FEEHAA LEMAA TOHIBBO RABBANAA WA TARZAA

and lead us successfully to all that which You,

وَعَلٰى مَا افْتَرَضْتَ عَلَيْنَا

WA A'LAA MAF TARAZTA A'LAYNAA

O our Lord, like and please and to do acts of

مِنْ طَاعَتِكَ وَطَاعَةِ رَسُوْلِكَ

MIN TAA-A'TEKA WA TAA-A'TE RASOOLEKA

obedience to You that which You have made obligatory upon us as well as acts of obedience to Your Messenger

وَاَهْلِ وِلَايَتِكَ

WA AHLE WELAAYATEKA

and to the men of Your leadership.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّيْۤ اَسْاَلُكَ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS-ALOK YAA ARHAMAR RAAHEMEENA

O Allah, I beseech You, O most Merciful of all those who show mercy,

اَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

AN TOSALLEYA A'LAA MOHAMMADINW WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

to send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

وَاَنْ تَهَبَ لَنَا فِيْهَا الرِّضَا

WA AN TAHABA LANAA FEEHAR REZAA

and grant us [Your] pleasure on these days.

اِنَّكَ سَمِيْعُ الدُّعَاۤءِ

INNAKA SAMEE-U'D DO-A'AA-E

You are verily Hearer of prayers.

وَلَا تَحْرِمْنَا خَيْرَ مَا تُنْزِلُ فِيْهَا مِنَ السَّمَاۤءِ

WA LAA TAHRIMNAA KHAYRA MAA TUNZELO FEEHAA MENAS SAMAAA-E

Do not deprive us of the good that You cause to come down from the heavens on these days,

وَطَهِّرْنَا مِنَ الذُّنُوْبِ

WA TAHHIRNAA MENAZ ZONOOBE

purify us from sins,

يَا عَلَّامَ الْغُيُوْبِ

YAA A'LLAAMAL GHOYOOBE

O Knower of all unseen things,

وَاَوْجِبْ لَنَا فِيْهَا دَارَ الْخُلُوْدِ

WA AWJIB LANAA FEEHAA DAARAL KHOLOODE

and make certain for us the abode of immortality.

اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ALLAAHUMMA SALLE A'LAA MOHAMMAHDINW WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

O Allah, send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

وَلَا تَتْرُكْ لَنَا فِيْهَا ذَنْبًا اِلَّا غَفَرْتَهٗ

WA LAA TATRUK LANAA FEEHAA ZANBAN ILLAA GHAFARTAHU

and do not leave for us a sin but that You forgive it,

وَلَا هَمًّا اِلَّا فَرَّجْتَهٗ

WA LAA HAMMAN ILLAA FARRAJTAHU

no depression but that You relieve it,

وَلَا دَيْنًا اِلَّا قَضَيْتَهٗ

WA DAYNAN ILLAA QAZAYTAHU

no debt but that You help us settle it,

وَلَا غَاۤئِبًا اِلَّاۤ اَدَّيْتَهٗ

WA LAA GHAAA-EBAN ILLAA ADDAYTAHU

no absent but that You make join us,

وَلَا حَاجَةً مِنْ حَوَاۤئِجِ الدُّنْيَا وَالْاٰخِرَةِ

WA LAA HAAJATAN MIN HAWAA-EJID DUNYAA WAL AAAKHERATE

and no need in this world and the Next World

اِلَّا سَهَّلْتَهَا وَيَسَّرْتَهَا

ILLAA SAHHALTAHAA WA YASSARTAHAA

but that You make it easy and obtainable.

اِنَّكَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ قَدِيْرٌ

INNAKA A'LAA KULLE SHAY-IN QADEERUN

You, verily, have power over all things.

اَللّٰهُمَّ يَا عَالِمَ الْخَفِيَّاتِ

ALLAAHUMMA YAA A'ALEMAL KHAFIYYAATE

O Allah! O Knower of all hidden things!

يَا رَاحِمَ الْعَبَرَاتِ يَا مُجِيْبَ الدَّعَوَاتِ

YAA RAAHEMAL A'BARAATE YAA MOJEEBAD DA'WAATE

O Merciful of all tears! O Answerer of all prayers!

يَا رَبَّ الْاَرَضِيْنَ وَالسَّمَاوَاتِ

YAA RABBAL ARAZEENA WAS SAMAAWAATE

O Lord of the [layers of the] earth and the heavens!

يَا مَنْ لَا تَتَشَابَهٗ عَلَيْهِ الْاَصْوَاتُ

YAA MAN LAA TATASHAABAHU A'LAYHIL ASWAATO

O He Who is not confused by various sounds!

صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

SALLE A'LAA MOHAMMADIWN WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

(Please) send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

وَاجْعَلْنَا فِيْهَا مِنْ عُتَقَاۤئِكَ

WAJ A'LNAA FEEHAA MIN O'TAQAAA-EKA

and include us, on these days, with those whom You release

وَطُلَقَاۤئِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ

WA TOLA-QAAA-EKA MENAN NAARE

and discharge from Hellfire,

وَالْفَاۤئِزِيْنَ بِجَنَّتِكَ وَالنَّاجِيْنَ

WAL FAAA-EZEENA BEJANNATEKA WAN NAAJEENA

those whom You make win Your Paradise, and those whom You save,

بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَاۤ اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِيْنَ

BERAHMATEKA YAA ARHAMAR RAAHEMEENA

out of Your mercy. O most Merciful of all those who show mercy!

وَصَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلٰى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِهٖ اَجْمَعِيْنَ

WA SALLAL LAAHO A'LAA SAYYEDENA MOHAMMADINW WA AALEHI AJMA-E'ENA.

Allah may send blessings to our master, Muhammad, and to his entire Household.

Five Tasbeeh

It is recommended to say the following five testaments on the first ten days of Zilhajj:

(1) اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهٗ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهٗ

ASH-HADO AN LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO WAHDAHU LAA SHAREEKA LAHU

I bear witness that there is no god save Allah, alone without having any partner.

لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ

LAHUL MULKO WA LAHUL HAMDO BEYADEHIL KHAYRO

His is the kingdom and His is all praise. In His Hand is all goodness,

وَهُوَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ قَدِيْرٌ

WA HOWA A'LAA KULLE SHAY-IN QADEERUN.

and He has power over all things.

(2) اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهٗ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهٗ

ASH-HADO AN LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO WAHDAHU LAA SHAREEKA LAHU

I bear witness that there is no god save Allah, alone without having any partner.

اَحَدًا صَمَدًا لَمْ يَتَّخِذْ صَاحِبَةً وَّلَا وَلَدًا

AHADAN SAMADAN LAM YATTAKHIZ SAAHEBATAN WA LAA WALADAN.

One and Only and Besought of all. He has not taken to Himself wife nor son.

(3) اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهٗ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهٗ

ASH-HADO AN LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO WAHDAHU LAA SHAREEKA LAHU

I bear witness that there is no god save Allah, alone without having any partner,

اَحَدًا صَمَدًا لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُوْلَدْ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهٗ كُفُوًا اَحَدٌ

AHADAN SAMADAN LAM YALID WA LAM YOOLAD WA LAM YAKUN LAHU KOFOWAN AHADUN.

One and Only and Besought of all. He begets not, nor is He begotten, and there is none comparable to Him.

(4) اَشْهَدُ اَنْ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهٗ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهٗ

ASH-HADO AN LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO WAHDAHU LAA SHAREEKA LAHU

I bear witness that there is no god save Allah, alone without having any partner.

لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِيْ وَيُمِيْتُ

LAHUL MULKO WA LAHUL HAMDO YOHYEE WA YOMEETO

His is the kingdom and His is all praise. He brings to life and causes to die,

وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لَا يَمُوْتُ بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ وَهُوَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَيْ‏ءٍ قَدِيْرٌ

WA HOWA HAYYUN LAA YAMOOTO BEYADEHIL KHAYRO WA HOWA A'LAA KULLE SHAY-IN QADEERUN.

and He is Ever-living and never dies. In His Hand is all goodness and He has power over all things.

(5) حَسْبِيَ اللّٰهُ وَكَفٰى سَمِعَ اللّٰهُ لِمَنْ دَعَا

HASBEYAL LAAHO WA KAFAA SAME-A'L LAAHO LEMAN DA-A'A

Sufficient to me is Allah and nothing else. May Allah listen from him who prays to Him.

لَيْسَ وَرَاۤءَ اللّٰهِ مُنْتَهٰى اَشْهَدُ لِلّٰهِ بِمَا دَعَا

LAYSA WARAAA-AL LAAHE MUNTAHAA ASH-HADO LILLAAHE BEMAA DA-A'AA

There is no end beyond Allah. I bear witness to Allah for all that He has declared,

وَاَنَّهٗ بَرِيْۤ‏ءٌ مِمَّنْ تَبَرَّاَ وَاَنَّ لِلّٰهِ الْاٰخِرَةَ وَالْاُوْلٰى.

WA ANNAHU BAREE-UN MIMMAN TABARRA-A WA ANNA LILLAAHIL AAKHERATO WAL OOLAA.

He is clear of all that from which He has declared clearness, and Allah’s is the end and the beginning of all things.

Archangel Gabriel has conveyed these five testaments as gift of Almighty Allah to Prophet Jesus (a.s.) and instructed him to say them on the first ten days of Zilhajj.

An excellent reward has been mentioned to be for whoever repeats these five statements one hundred times each day. However, ‘Allamah al-Majlisi (r.a.) says that it is not improbable that each of these five testaments is repeated ten times each day. Yet, to repeat them one hundred times is better.

Tahlilaat (hymns of God's unity)

It is recommended to say the following doxology (zikr), which is reported from Imam Ali Ameer al-Momineen (a.s.), on the first ten days of Zilhajj. An excellent reward has been reported for those saying this doxology (zikr), which should preferably be repeated ten times a day:

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ عَدَدَ اللَّيَالِيْ وَالدُّهُوْرِ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO A'DADAL LAYAALEE WAD DOHOORE

There is no god save Allah as many as nights and ages.

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ عَدَدَ اَمْوَاجِ الْبُحُوْرِ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO A'DADA AMWAAJIL BOHOORE

There is no god save Allah as many as the waves of oceans.

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَرَحْمَتُهٗ خَيْرٌ مِمَّا يَجْمَعُوْنَ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO WA RAHMATOHU KHAYRUN MIMMAA YAJ-MA-O'ONA

There is no god save Allah and His mercy is better than what they amass.

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ عَدَدَ الشَّوْكِ وَالشَّجَرِ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO A'DADASH SHAWKE WASH SHAJARE

There is no god save Allah as many as thorns and trees.

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ عَدَدَ الشَّعْرِ وَالْوَبَرِ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO A'DADASH SHA’RE WAL WABARE

There is no god save Allah as many as hairs and piles.

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ عَدَدَ الْحَجَرِ وَالْمَدَرِ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO A'DADAL HAJARE WAL MADARE

There is no god save Allah as many as stones and loams.

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ عَدَدَ لَمْحِ الْعُيُوْنِ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO A'DADA LAMHIL O'YOONE

There is no god save Allah as many as sights of eyes.

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ فِي اللَّيْلِ اِذَا عَسْعَسَ وَالصُّبْحِ اِذَا تَنَفَّسَ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO FIL LAYLE EZAA A'S-A'SA WA FISH SUBHE EZAA TANAFFASA

There is no god save Allah in the night when it departs and in the morning when it brightens.

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ عَدَدَ الرِّيَاحِ فِي الْبَرَارِيْ وَالصُّخُوْرِ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO A'DADAR REYAAHE FIL BARAAREE WAS-SOKHOORE

There is no god save Allah as much as wind in lands and rocks.

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللّٰهُ مِنَ الْيَوْمِ اِلٰى يَوْمِ يُنْفَخُ فِي الصُّوْرِ.

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO MENAL YAWME ELAA YAWMIN YUNFAKHO FIS SOORE.

There is no god save Allah from this day up to the day when the Trumpet will be blown.
