Etiquettes of Going to Toilet

Text and Translation

If you wish to offer a prayer and need to go to toilet, you may begin with the latter. There are many reported etiquettes of going to toilet. However, I will hereinafter mention some of them briefly:

You may precede your left foot to the right when entering the water closet (or the place where you excrete) and say the following:

بِسْمِ اللهِ وَبِاللهِ

BISMILLAAHE WA BILLAAHE

In the Name of Allah (I begin) and in Allah (I trust).

اَعُوذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الرِّجْسِ النَّجِسِ

A-O’OZO BILLAAHE MENAR RIJSIN NAJESIL

I pray Allah’s protection against the filthy, the impure,

الْخَبِيْثِ الْمُخْبِثِ

KHABEESIL MUKHBESISH

the wicked, and the source of wickedness;

الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيْمِ

SHAYTAANIR RAJEEME.

namely, Satan the accursed.

When you try to take off, you may utter the basmalah:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEME

In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

At such a situation, and all similar situations, you must try to cover your private parts, letting nobody see them. It is haram (i.e. religiously unlawful) to sit, for excretion, facing the kiblah direction or giving it one’s back.

While excreting, it is recommended to say the following:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اَطْعِمْنِي طَيِّبًا فِيْ عَافِيَةٍ

ALLAAHUMMA AT-I’MNEE TAYYEBAN FEE A’AFEYATIN

O Allah, (please) nourish me pleasant food in wellbeing

وَ اَخْرِجْهُ مِنِّيْ خَبِيْثًا فِيْ عَافِيَةٍ

WA AKHRIJHO MINNEE KHABEESAN FEE A’AFEYATIN

and make me excrete it repulsive in wellbeing.

If your sight falls on the excrement, you may say the following:

اَللّٰهُمَّ ارْزُقْنِي الْحَلَالَ

ALLAAHUMMAR ZUQNIL HALAALA

O Allah, (please) provide me with the legally gotten (sustenance)

وَ جَنِّبْنِيْ الْحَرَامَ

WA JANNIBNIL HARAAMA

and keep me away from the illegally gotten.

When you finish and want to clean yourself, you may first of all try to make sure that you have discharged the entire waste. Then, you may say the supplicatory prayer that is said when one’s eye falls on water:

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِيْ جَعَلَ الْمَاءَ طَهُوْرًا

ALHAMDO LILLAAHIL LAZEE JA-A’LAL MAA-A TAHOORAN

All praise be to Allah Who has made water pure

وَ لَمْ يَجْعَلْهُ نَجِسًا

WA LAM YAJ-A’LHO NAJESAN

but has not made it impure.

While cleaning yourself from the waste, you may say the following:

اَللّٰهُمَّ حَصِّنْ فَرْجِيْ وَ اَعِفَّهٗ

ALLAAHUMMA HASSIN FARJEE WA A-I’FFAHU

O Allah, make me guard my chastity, chasten me,

وَ اسْتُرْ عَوْرَتِيْ

WAS TUR A’WRATEE

cover my private parts,

وَ حَرِّمْنِيْ عَلَى النَّارِ

WA HARRIMNEE A’LAN NAARE.

and forbid Hellfire from consuming me.

When you finish and stand up, you may rub your abdomen with your right hand and say the following:

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِيْ اَمَاطَ عَنِّيَ الْاَذٰى

ALHAMDO LILLAAHIL LAZEE AMAATA A’NNEYAL AZAA

All praise be to Allah Who has warded off harm from me,

وَ هَنَّاَنِيْ طَعَامِيْ وَ شَرَابِيْ

WA HANNAANEE TA-A’AMEE WA SHARAABEE

made me find the pleasure of my food and drink,

وَ عَافَانِيْ مِنَ الْبَلْوٰى

WA A’AFAANEE MENAL BALWAA

and freed me from plague.

You may then leave the water closet (or the place where you have excreted), preceding your right foot to the left and saying the following:

اَلْحَمْدُ لِلهِ الَّذِيْ عَرَّفَنِيْ لَذَّتَهٗ

ALHAMDO LILLAAHIL LAZEE A’RRAFANEE LAZZATAHU

All praise be to Allah Who has made me find its pleasure,

وَ اَبْقٰى فِي جَسَدِيْ قُوَّتَهٗ

WA ABQAA FEE JASADEE QUWWATAHU

kept in my body its power,

وَ اَخْرَجَ عَنِّيْ اَذَاهٗ

WA AKHRAJA A’NNEE AZAAHU

and discharged its harm from me.

يَا لَهَا نِعْمَةً

YAA LAHAA NE’MATAN

How a pleasant bliss it is!

يَا لَهَا نِعْمَةً

لَا يُقَدِّرُ الْقَادِرُوْنَ قَدْرَهَا
