Etiquettes of attending Mosques

Text and Translation

You may then walk to the mosque with tranquility and solemnity. While leaving your house towards the mosque, you may say the following:

بِسْمِ اللهِ الَّذِيْ خَلَقَنِيْ فَهُوَيَهْدِيْنِيْ

BISMIL LAAHIL LAZEE KHALAQANEE FAHOWA YAHDEENEE

In the Name of Allah Who created me, then He has shown me the way,

وَ الَّذِيْ هُوَيُطْعِمُنِيْ وَيَسْقِيْنِيْ

WAL LAZEE HOWA YUT-E’MONEE WA YASQEENEE

Who gives me to eat and gives me to drink,

وَ اِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَيَشْفِيْنِيْ

WA EZAA MARIZTO FAHOWA YASHFEENEE

when I am sick, then He restores me to health,

وَ الَّذِيْ يُمِيْتُنِيْ ثُمَّ يُحْيِيْنِيْ

WAL LAZEE YOMEETONEE SUMMA YOHYEENEE

Who will cause me to die, then give me life,

وَ الَّذِيْٓ اَطْمَعُ اَنْ يَّغْفِرَ لِيْ خَطِيَْۗٔتِيْ يَوْمَ الدِّيْنِ

WAL LAZEE ATMA-O’ ANY YAGHFERA LEE KHATEEE-ATEE YAWMAD DEENE

and Who, I hope, will forgive me my mistakes on the day of judgment.

رَبِّ هَبْ لِيْ حُكْمًا وَّاَلْحِقْنِيْ بِالصّٰلِحِيْنَ

RABBE HAB LEE HUKMANW WA ALHIQNEE BIS-SAALEHEEN

My Lord, (please) grant me wisdom, join me with the righteous ones,

وَ اجْعَلْ لِّيْ لِسَانَ صِدْقٍ فِي الْاٰخِرِيْنَ

WAJ A’L LEE LESAANA SIDQIN FIL AAKHEREENA

ordain for me a goodly mention among posterity,

وَ اجْعَلْنِيْ مِنْ وَّرَثَۃِ جَنَّۃِ النَّعِيْمِ

WAJ A’LNEE MINW WARASATE JANNATIN NA-E’EME

make me of the heirs of the garden of bliss,

وَ اغْفِرْ لِاَبِيْٓ

WAGH FIR LE-ABEE.

and forgive my father.

Before you enter the mosque, you may check the bottom of your shoes, lest there may be an impure thing sticking to them.

You may then enter, by preceding your right foot to the left, and say the following:

بِسْمِ اللهِ وَبِاللهِ

BISMIL LAAHE WA BILLAAHE

In the Name of Allah (I begin), in Allah (I trust),

وَمِنَ اللهِ وَاِلٰى اللهِ

WA MENAL LAAHE WA ELAL LAAHE

from Allah (I derive power), to Allah (I refer all my affairs),

وَخَيْرُ الْاَسْمَاءِ كُلِّهَا لِلهِ

WA KHAYRUL ASMAA-E KULLEHAA LILLAAHE

and the most excellent of all names are Allah’s.

تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلٰى اللهِ

TAWAKKALTO A’LAL LAAHE

I put my trust in Allah.

وَ لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللهِ

WA LAA HAWLA WA LAA QUWWATA ILLAA BILLAAHE

There is neither might nor power except with Allah.

اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

ALLAHUMMA SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADIN WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

O Allah, (please) send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

وَ افْتَحْ لِيْ اَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ وَ تَوْبَتِكَ

WAF TAH LEE ABWABA RAHMATEKA WA TAWBATEKA

open before me the doors to Your mercy and admission of repentance,

وَ اَغْلِقْ عَنِّيْ اَبْوَابَ مَعْصِيَتِكَ

WA AGHLIQ A’NNEE ABWABA MA’SEYATEKA

close in my face the doors to the acts of disobedience to You,

وَ اجْعَلْنِيْ مِنْ زُوَّارِكَ

WAJ A’LNEE MIN ZUWWAAREKA

make me of Your frequent visitors,

وَ عُمَّارِ مَسَاجِدِكَ

WA U’MMAARE MASAAJEDEKA

constructors of Your mosques,

وَ مِمَّنْ يُنَاجِيْكَ فِيْ اللَّيْلِ وَ النَّهَارِ

WA MIMMAN YONAAJEEKA FIL LAYLE WAN NAHAARE

those who talk to You confidentially at nights and on days,

وَ مِنَ الَّذِيْنَ هُمْ فِي صَلَاتِهِمْ خَاشِعُوْنَ

WA MENAL LAZEENA HUM FEE SALAATEHIM KHAASHEO’ONA

and those who are submissive in their prayers,

وَ ادْحَرْ عَنِّي الشَّيْطَانَ الرَّجِيْمَ

WAD HAR A’NNISH SHAYTAANAR RAJEEMA

and fend off from me the accursed Satan

وَ جُنُوْدَ اِبْلِيسَ اَجْمَعِيْنَ

WA JONOODA IBLEESA AJMAE’ENA

and all troops of Iblees.
