Merits

You may now prepare yourself for performing the prayer. You must have heart-presence and pay attention to your prayer, considering the humility of your situation and the all-greatness and majesty of your Lord to Whom you are speaking in your prayer. Behave as if you can see Him in front of you, and be ashamed of speaking to Him with your tongue while your heart is preoccupied with something else. Then stand up with respect and reverence, putting your two hands on your thighs opposite your knees, separating your two feet by an amount between three fingers and one span, and casting your sight on the place of your prostration. You may then intend to perform this dawn (fajr) Prayer for seeking nearness to Allah the Exalted, then say the Takbirat al-Ihram statement ("Allahu Akbar", the introductory statement to prayer). It is recommended to add further statements of Takbir to it, at each of which you raise your hands to the level of the lower part of your ears, turning the palms of your hands towards the qiblah direction, keeping all your fingers, except the thumb, close to one another but not open. You may say the supplications of the Takbir statements as follows.

Text and Translation

After the third Takbir statement, say the following:

ALLAAHUMMA ANTAL MALIKUL HAQQUL MUBEEN, LAA ILAAHA ILLAA ANT, SUBHAANAKA INNEE ZALAMTU NAFSEE FAGHFIR LEE ZANBEE INNAHU LAA YAGHFIRUZ ZUNOOBA ILLAA ANT

O Allah, You are the true, manifest King; there is no god except You. Glory be to You; verily I have wronged myself, so forgive me my sin, for none forgives sins except You.

After the fifth Takbir statement, say the following:

Here I am, at Your service, granted success by You; good is in Your two hands, and evil is not attributed to You. Rightly-guided is whomever You guide. I am Your servant, the son of Your two servants, abject before You — from You, by You, for You, and unto You. There is no refuge, no escape, and no fleeing from You except unto You. Glory be to You, and mercy upon mercy from You; blessed are You and exalted are You; glory be to You, Lord of the Sacred House.

After the seventh Takbir statement, say the following:

WAJJAHTU WAJHIYA LIL LAZEE FATARAS SAMAAWAATI WAL ARDA A'AALIMAL GHAYBI WASH SHAHAADATI HANEEFAM MUSLIMAA, WA MAAA ANAA MINAL MUSHRIKEEN, INNA SALAATEE WA NUSUKEE WA MAHYAAYA WA MAMAATEE LILLAAHI RABBIL A'AALAMEEN, LAA SHAREEKA LAH, WA BI-ZAALIKA UMIRTU WA ANAA MINAL MUSLIMEEN

I have turned my face towards Him Who originated the heavens and the earth, the Knower of the unseen and the seen, upright in submission, and I am not of the polytheists. Verily my prayer, my rites, my life, and my death belong to Allah, Lord of the worlds; He has no partner, and thus I have been commanded, and I am of those who submit.
