Text and Translation

This is the supplicatory prayer the Holy Prophet (s) said on the days of the Battle of Badr and the Battle of the Allies (al-Ahzab). Imam al-Husayn (a), chief of the martyrs, also said this same supplication at Karbala on the day of Ashura. Two further supplications were said by Imam al-Husayn (a) that day; the first is the one he taught his son Imam Zayn al-Abidin (a) as he embraced him to his chest while blood poured from his wounds, for use in urgent need, intense grief, hardship, and difficulty:

BI-HAQQI YAASEEN WAL QUR-AANIL HAKEEM WA BI-HAQQI TAA-HAA WAL QUR-AANIL A'ZEEM

By the right of Ya-Sin and the Wise Qur'an, and by the right of Ta-Ha and the Great Qur'an,

YAA MAY YAQDIRU A'LAA HAWAAA-IJIS SAAA-ILEENA YAA MAY YA'LAMU MAA FID DAMEER

O He Who has power over the needs of those who ask, O He Who knows what is in the innermost heart,

YAA MUNAFFISAN A'NIL MAKROOBEENA YAA MUFARRIJAN A'NIL MAGHMOOMEEN

O He Who relieves the distressed, O He Who removes the grief of the grieved,

YAA RAAHIMASH SHAYKHIL KABEERI YAA RAAZIQAT TIFLIS SAGHEER

O He Who has mercy on the elderly, O He Who sustains the young child,

YAA MAL LAA YAHTAAJU ILAT TAFSEER SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMAD

O He Who needs no explanation, bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

WAF-A'L BEE KAZAA WA KAZAA

and do with me such-and-such (mention your need).

One may then submit his requests.

Fifth: Imam al-Sadiq (a) is reported to have raised his hands towards the sky and said:

RABBI LAA TAKILNEE ILAA NAFSEE TARFATA A'YNIN ABADAL LAA AQALLA MIN ZAALIKA WA LAA AKTHAR

My Lord, do not entrust me to myself even for the blink of an eye, ever — neither less than that nor more.

Sixth: Imam al-Sadiq (a) is also reported to have advised saying:

IRHAMNEE MIMMAA LAA TAAQATA LEE BIHI WA LAA SABRA LEE A'LAYH

Have mercy on me from that which I have no strength to bear and no patience for.

Seventh: Imam al-Sadiq (a) is also reported to have advised saying:

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS-ALUKA BI-JALAALIKA WA JAMAALIKA WA KARAMIKA AN TAF-A'LA BEE KAZAA WA KAZAA

O Allah, I ask You by Your majesty, Your beauty, and Your generosity, to do with me such-and-such.

One may then submit his requests.

Eighth: Fazl ibn Yunus reports that Imam al-Kazim (a) advised him to repeat this supplication frequently:

ALLAAHUMMA LAA TAJ-A'LNEE MINAL MU-A'AREENA WA LAA TUKHRIJNEE MINAT TAQSEER

O Allah, do not count me among those whose faith is only lent, and do not exempt me from feeling my shortcoming.

The first statement asks not to be counted among those whose faith is as unsettled as a loan, not firmly fixed in the heart, or among those left entirely to themselves with no reliance on Allah. The second asks not to be counted among those who feel they have discharged their duty to their Lord perfectly — one should always feel one's efforts fall short of that duty, however much is exerted.

Ninth: Imam al-Baqir (a) said that Almighty Allah forgave a Bedouin for two words he said in his supplication:

ALLAAHUMMA IN TU-A'ZZIBNEE FA-AHLUL LI-ZAALIKA ANAA WA IN TAGHFIRLEE FA-AHLUL LI-ZAALIKA ANT

O Allah, if You punish me, I deserve it; and if You forgive me, You are worthy of that.

Tenth: Dawud al-Raqqi said that whenever he pressed his request in prayer, Imam al-Sadiq (a) would ask Almighty Allah in the name of the Five Persons: the Holy Prophet, Imam Ali, Lady Fatimah, Imam al-Hasan, and Imam al-Husayn, peace be upon them.

Eleventh: Yazid al-Sa'igh said: I asked Imam al-Sadiq (a) to pray for our good, so he said:

ALLAAHUMMAR ZUQHUM SIDQAL HADEETHI WA ADAAA-AL AMAANATI WAL MUHAAFAZATA A'LAS SALAWAAT

O Allah, grant them truthfulness in speech, the fulfilling of trusts, and the safeguarding of their prayers,

ALLAAHUMMA INNAHUM AHAQQU KHALQIKA AN TAF-A'LAHU BIHIM ALLAAHUMMAF-A'LHU BIHIM

O Allah, they are the most deserving of Your creatures for You to do this for; O Allah, do it for them.

Twelfth: say this supplication, which Imam Ali, Amir al-Mu'minin (a), used to say:

ALLAAHUMMA MUNNA A'LAYYA BIT TAWAKKULI A'LAYKA WAT TAFWEEDI ILAYKA WAR RIDAA BI-QADARIKA WAT TASLEEMI LI-AMRIK

O Allah, favor me with reliance upon You, entrusting my affairs to You, contentment with Your decree, and submission to Your command,

HATTAA LAA UHIBBA TA'JEELA MAA AKHKHARTA WA LAA TA-KHEERA MAA A'JJALTA YAA RABBAL A'ALAMEEN

so that I do not wish to hasten what You have delayed, nor to delay what You have hastened, O Lord of the worlds.

Thirteenth: it is reported that the Angel Gabriel came to the Holy Prophet (s) with this message from Almighty Allah: if you want to worship Me a whole night and day perfectly, raise your hands towards Me and say:

ALLAAHUMMA LAKAL HAMDU HAMDAN KHAALIDAM MA-A' KHULOODIK

O Allah, to You is praise, everlasting praise along with Your everlastingness,

WA LAKAL HAMDU HAMDAL LAA MUNTAHAA LAHU DOONA I'LMIK

and to You is praise, praise with no limit short of Your knowledge,

WA LAKAL HAMDU HAMDAL LAA AMADA LAHU DOONA MASHEE-ATIK

and to You is praise, praise with no bound short of Your will,

WA LAKAL HAMDU HAMDAL LAA JAZAAA-A LI-QAAA-ILIHI ILLAA RIDAAK

and to You is praise, praise whose speaker's only reward is Your good pleasure.

ALLAAHUMMA LAKAL HAMDU KULLUHU WA LAKAL MANNU KULLUHU WA LAKAL FAKHRU KULLUH

O Allah, to You belongs all praise, to You belongs all favor, to You belongs all pride,

WA LAKAL BAHAAA-O KULLUHU WA LAKAN NOORU KULLUHU WA LAKAL I'ZZATU KULLUHAA

to You belongs all splendor, to You belongs all light, to You belongs all might,

WA LAKAL JABAROOTU KULLUHAA WA LAKAL A'ZAMATU KULLUHAA

to You belongs all sovereignty, to You belongs all greatness,
