Merits

Whoever intends to strengthen his memory is advised to use the miswak frequently, observe fasting, regularly read the Holy Qur'an in general and Ayat al-Kursi in particular, and take twenty grains of red raisins before eating anything else in the morning — useful for understanding, mentality, and memory. Eating the meat at the back of the neck, candy, honey, and lentils is also said to help. Equal parts olibanum, galingale, and sugar candy may be crushed together and about five dirhams' worth of the mixture swallowed daily, three days on and five days off, repeated.

Text and Translation

For good memory, it is advisable to say these words every day after the Dawn (Fajr) prayer, before the taslim:

YAA HAYYO YAA QAYYOOMO FALAA YAFOOTO SHAY-AN ILMOHU WA LAA YA-ODOHU

O Ever-Living, O Self-Subsisting, from Whose knowledge nothing escapes, and Whom nothing wearies.

It is also recommended to say the post-prayer supplication that begins with this statement, taught by the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) to Imam Ali (a.s.) for retaining what one hears, recited after every obligatory prayer:

SUBHAANA MAN LAA YATADEE ALAA AHLE MAMLAKATIHI

Glory be to Him Who does not treat the people of His kingdom unjustly and harshly,

SUBHAANA MAN LAA YAAKHUZO AHLAL ARZE BE-ALWAANIL AZAABI

Glory be to Him Who does not let various kinds of torment come suddenly upon the people of the earth,

SUBHAANAR RA-OOFIR RAHEEM

Glory be to the Compassionate, the Merciful.

ALLAAHUMMAJ AL LEE FEE QALBEE NOORAN WA BASARAN WA FAHMAN WA ILMAN INNAKA ALAA KULLE SHAY-IN QADEER

O Allah, fill my heart with light, insight, understanding and knowledge; verily You have power over all things.
