Dua Maknoon and its merits

Text and Translation

Al-Tusi, Ibn Babawayh, and others have reported through valid chains of authority that Imam Ali, Amir al-Mu'minin (a), said, "Whoever wishes to leave this worldly life as pure of sins as untainted gold, with none to demand him to answer for a wrongdoing, must recite twelve times after each of the five obligatory prayers the Chapter that describes Almighty Allah - Surah al-Tawhid. He may then stretch out his hand and pray to Almighty Allah with this supplicatory prayer, which is one of the redeeming matters that Allah's Messenger (s) taught and ordered me to convey to al-Hasan and al-Husayn (a):

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنّي اَسْئَلُكَ بِاسْمِكَ الْمَكْنُوْنِ الْمَخْزُوْنِ الطَّاهِرِ الطُّهْرِ الْمُبَارَكِ وَاَسْئَلُكَ بِاسْمِكَ الْعَظِيْمِ وَسُلْطَانِكَ الْقَدِيْمِ يَا وَاهِبَ الْعَطَايَا يَا مُطْلِقَ الْاُسَارٰى يَا فَكَّاكَ الرِّقَابِ مِنَ النَّارِ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَفُكَّ رَقَبَتِيْ مِنَ النّارِ وَاَخْرِجْنِيْ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا اٰمِنًا وَاَدْخِلْنِي الْجَنَّةَ سَالِمًا وَاجْعَلْ دُعاۤئِيْ اَوَّلَهُ فَلَاحًا وَاَوْسَطَهُ نَجَاحًا وَاٰخِرَهُ صَلَاحًا اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوْبِ۔

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS-ALUKA BI-ISMIKAL MAKNOONIL MAKHZOONIT TAAHIRIT TUHRIL MUBAARAK, WA AS-ALUKA BI-ISMIKAL A'ZEEMI WA SULTAANIKAL QADEEM, YAA WAAHIBAL A'TAAYAA, YAA MUTLIQAL USAARAA, YAA FAKKAAKAR RIQAABI MINAN NAAR, SALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMAD, WA FUKKA RAQABATEE MINAN NAAR, WA AKHRIJNEE MINAD DUNYAA AAMINAW WA ADKHILNIL JANNATA SAALIMAW WAJ-A'L DU-A'AAA-EE AWWALAHU FALAAHAW WA AWSATAHU NAJAAHAW WA AAKHIRAHU SALAAHAA, INNAKA ANTA A'LLAAMUL GHUYOOB.

O Allah, I beseech You by Your name - the Well-guarded, the Treasured, the Pure, the Purity, the Blessed - and I beseech You by Your Great Name and Your Eternal Sovereignty. O Bestower of gifts! O Releaser of captives! O Deliverer of necks from the Fire! Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, deliver my neck from the Fire, take me out of this world in safety, admit me into Paradise unharmed, and make the beginning of my prayer success, its middle triumph, and its end righteousness; surely You are the Knower of the unseen.

The same supplicatory prayer, in other validly reported copies of the tradition, is as follows:

يَا فَكَّاكَ الرِّقَابِ مِنَ النَّارِ اَسْئَلُكَ اَنْ تُصَلِّيَ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاَنْ تُعْتِقَ رَقَبَتِيْ مِنَ النَّارِ وَاَنْ تُخْرِجَنِيْ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا سَالِمًا وَتُدْخِلَنِي الْجَنَّةَ اٰمِنًا وَاَنْ تَجْعَلَ دُعاۤئِيْ اَوَّلَهُ فَلَاحًا وَاَوْسَطَهُ نَجَاحًا وَاٰخِرَهُ صَلَاحًا اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ عَلَّامُ الْغُيُوْبِ۔

YAA FAKKAAKAR RIQAABI MINAN NAAR, AS-ALUKA AN TUSALLIYA A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMAD, WA AN TU'TIQA RAQABATEE MINAN NAAR, WA AN TUKHRIJANEE MINAD DUNYAA SAALIMAW WA TUDKHILANIL JANNATA AAMINAW WA AN TAJ-A'LA DU-A'AAA-EE AWWALAHU FALAAHAW WA AWSATAHU NAJAAHAW WA AAKHIRAHU SALAAHAA, INNAKA ANTA A'LLAAMUL GHUYOOB.

O Deliverer of necks from the Fire! I beseech You to bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, to free my neck from the Fire, to take me out of this world in safety and admit me into Paradise secure, and to make the beginning of my prayer success, its middle triumph, and its end righteousness; surely You are the Knower of the unseen.
