Text and Translation

Shaykh Ibn Fahad has reported Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) as saying, “Any supplication that is not commenced with a statement of glorification of the Lord is imperfect. Glorification may always precede praise.”

The reporter asked the Imam (a.s.), “What is the least acceptable statement of glorification?”

The Imam (a.s.) taught him to say this supplicatory prayer:

ALLAAHUMMA ANTAL AWWALO FALAYSA QABLAKA SHAY-UN WA ANTAL AAKHERO FALAYSA BA’DAKA SHAY-UN WA ANTAZ ZAAHERO FALAYSA FAW-QAKA SHAY-UN WA ANTAL BAATENO FALAYSA DOONAKA SHAY-UN WA ANTAL A’ZEEZUL HAKEEMO.

O Allah, You are the First, so there is nothing before You; You are the Last, so there is nothing after You; You are the Manifest, so there is nothing above You; and You are the Hidden, so there is nothing beyond You; and You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.
