Dua between Sunset and Bedtime

Text and Translation

Know that the first thing to do at sunset is to hurry to the mosque. When the sun turns yellowish, say:

اَمْسٰى ظُلْمِىْ مُسْتَجِيْرًا بِعَفْوِكَ وَاَمْسَتْ ذُنُوْبِىْ مُسْتَجِيْرَةً بِمَغْفِرَتِكَ وَاَمْسٰى خَوْفِىْ مُسْتَجِيْرًا بِاَمَانِكَ

AMSAA ZULMEE MUSTAJEERAM BI-A'FWIKA WA AMSAT ZUNOOBEE MUSTAJEERATAM BI-MAGHFIRATIKA WA AMSAA KHAWFEE MUSTAJEERAM BI-AMAANIK

My wrongdoing has entered this evening seeking refuge in Your pardon, my sins have entered this evening seeking refuge in Your forgiveness, and my fear has entered this evening seeking refuge in Your protection,

وَاَمْسٰى ذُلِّىْ مُسْتَجِيْرًا بِعِزِّكَ وَاَمْسٰى فَقْرِىْ مُسْتَجِيْرًا بِغِنَاكَ وَاَمْسٰى وَجْهِىَ الْبَالِىْ مُسْتَجِيْرًا بِوَجْهِكَ الدَّاۤئِمِ الْبَاقِىْ

WA AMSAA ZULLEE MUSTAJEERAM BI-I'ZZIKA WA AMSAA FAQREE MUSTAJEERAM BI-GHINAAKA WA AMSAA WAJHIYAL BAALEE MUSTAJEERAM BI-WAJHIKAD DAAA-IMIL BAAQEE

my abasement has entered this evening seeking refuge in Your might, my poverty has entered this evening seeking refuge in Your richness, and my perishing face has entered this evening seeking refuge in Your everlasting, remaining Countenance.

اَللّٰهُمَّ اَلْبِسْنِىْ عَافِيَتَكَ وَغَشِّنِىْ بِرَحْمَتِكَ وَجَلِّلْنِىْ كَرَامَتَكَ وَقِنِىْ شَرَّ خَلْقِكَ مِنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِ يَاۤ اَللهُ يَا رَحْمٰنُ يَا رَحِيْمُ

ALLAAHUMMA ALBISNEE A'AAFIYATAKA WA GHASHSHINEE BI-RAHMATIKA WA JALLILNEE KARAAMATAKA WA QINEE SHARRA KHALQIKA MINAL JINNI WAL INS YAA ALLAAHO YAA RAHMAANO YAA RAHEEM

O Allah, clothe me in Your well-being, envelop me in Your mercy, robe me in Your honor, and protect me from the evil of Your creation among the jinn and mankind; O Allah, O All-beneficent, O All-merciful.

At this hour it is highly recommended to occupy oneself with glorifying Allah and seeking His forgiveness, for it is as honorable an hour as the one before sunrise, as Allah says in the Qur'an:

وَ سَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوْعِ الشَّمْسِ وَ قَبْلَ الْغُرُوْبِ

WA SABBIH BI-HAMDI RABBIKA QABLA TULOO-I'SH SHAMSI WA QABLAL GHUROOB

And glorify your Lord with praise before the rising of the sun and before its setting.

Imam al-Sadiq (a) said: when the color of the sun changes, as it is about to set, you must remember Allah, the Almighty and Majestic; if at that hour you are with someone who distracts you from this, leave him and supplicate.

Sunset Supplication — the supplication to be said at sunset:

يَا مَنْ خَتَمَ النُّبُوَّةَ بِمُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ اِخْتِمْ لِىْ فِىْ يَوْمِىْ هٰذَا بِخَيْرٍ وَشَهْرِىْ بِخَيْرٍ وَسَنَتِىْ بِخَيْرٍ وَعُمْرِىْ بِخَيْرٍ

YAA MAN KHATAMAN NUBUWWATA BI-MUHAMMADIN SALLAL LAAHO A'LAYHI WA AALIHI IKHTIM LEE FEE YAWMEE HAAZAA BI-KHAYRIW WA SHAHREE BI-KHAYRIW WA SANATEE BI-KHAYRIW WA U'MREE BI-KHAYR

O He Who sealed prophethood with Muhammad — Allah's blessings be upon him and his Household — seal for me this day of mine with good, this month of mine with good, this year of mine with good, and my life with good.

Rites at Sunset: say the words professing that there is no god but Allah, and the words of seeking His protection, mentioned in the coming chapter on the supplications for mornings and evenings. Then place your hand on your head and pass it over your face, then hold your beard and say:

اَحَطْتُ عَلٰى نَفْسِىْ وَاَهْلِىْ وَمَالِىْ وَوَلَدِىْ مِنْ غَاۤئِبٍ وَشَاهِدٍ بِاللّٰهِ الَّذِىْ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ

AHATTU A'LAA NAFSEE WA AHLEE WA MAALEE WA WALADEE MIN GHAAA-IBIW WA SHAAHIDIM BILLAAHIL LAZEE LAA ILAAHA ILLAA HUWA

I have encompassed myself, my family, my wealth, and my children — the unseen and the seen among them — with the protection of Allah, besides Whom there is no god,

then recite the remainder of [Ayat al-Kursi](A4), from "the All-beneficent, the All-merciful" to its closing "the Most High, the All-magnificent."
