Dua before leaving the house

Text and Translation

First: Imam al-Sadiq (a) said: before leaving your house, say the following; whoever does will remain in Allah's custody until he returns to the place he left.

اَللهُ اَكْبَرُ

ALLAAHO AKBAR

Allah is the Greatest. (repeat three times)

بِالِلّٰهِ اَخْرُجُ وَ بِالِلّٰهِ اَدْخُلُ وَ عَلٰى الِلّٰهِ اَتَوَكَّلُ

BILLAAHI AKHRUJU WA BILLAAHI ADKHULU WA A'LAL LAAHI ATAWAKKAL

By Allah I go out, by Allah I come in, and upon Allah I rely. (repeat three times)

اَللّٰهُمَّ افْتَحْ لِىْ فِىْ وَجْهِىْ هٰذَا بِخَيْرٍ وَ اخْتِمْ لِىْ بِخَيْرٍ وَّقِنِىْ شَرَّ كُلِّ دآبَّةٍ اَنْتَ اٰخِذٌ بِنَاصِيَتِهَا اِنَّ رَبِّىْ عَلٰى صِرَاطٍ مُّسْتَقِيْمٍ

ALLAAHUMMAFTAH LEE FEE WAJHEE HAAZAA BI-KHAYRIN WAKHTIM LEE BI-KHAYRIN WA QINEE SHARRA KULLI DAAABBATIN ANTA AAKHIZUM BI-NAASIYATIHAA INNA RABBEE A'LAA SIRAATIM MUSTAQEEM

O Allah, open this venture of mine with good, seal it for me with good, and protect me from the evil of every creature whose forelock You hold; verily my Lord is on a straight path. (say once)

Second: Imam al-Sajjad (a) said: at the door of your house, just before you leave, say:

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ اٰمَنْتُ بِاللّٰهِ وَ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللّٰهِ

BISMIL LAAHI AAMANTU BILLAAHI WA TAWAKKALTU A'LAL LAAH

In the name of Allah, I believe in Allah, and I put my trust in Allah.

Third: Imam al-Baqir (a) said: whoever says the following when leaving his house, Allah will spare him whatever concerns him in this world and the next:

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ حَسْبِىَ اللّٰهُ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللّٰهِ اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ اَسْئَلُكَ خَيْرَ اُمُوْرِىْ كُلِّهَا وَ اَعُوْذُبِكَ مِنْ خِزْىِ الدُّنْيَا وَ عَذَابِ الْاٰخِرَةِ

BISMIL LAAHI HASBIYAL LAAHU TAWAKKALTU A'LAL LAAHI ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS-ALUKA KHAYRA UMOOREE KULLIHAA WA A'OOZU BIKA MIN KHIZYID DUNYAA WA A'ZAABIL AAKHIRAH

In the name of Allah, Allah suffices me, I put my trust in Allah. O Allah, I ask You for the best of all my affairs, and I seek refuge in You from the disgrace of this world and the punishment of the Hereafter.

Fourth: Imam al-Sadiq (a) said: whenever you leave your house, say:

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللّٰهِ لَا حَوْلَ وَلَاقُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ اَسْئَلُكَ خَيْرَ مَا خَرَجْتُ لَهُ وَ اَعُوْذُبِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَرَجْتُ لَهُ

BISMIL LAAHI TAWAKKALTU A'LAL LAAHI LAA HAWLA WA LAA QUWWATA ILLAA BILLAAH ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS-ALUKA KHAYRA MAA KHARAJTU LAHU WA A'OOZU BIKA MIN SHARRI MAA KHARAJTU LAHU

In the name of Allah, I put my trust in Allah; there is no power and no strength except by Allah. O Allah, I ask You for the good of what I have gone out for, and I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have gone out for,

اَللّٰهُمَّ اَوْسِعْ عَلَىَّ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ وَ اَتْمِمْ عَلَىَّ نِعْمَتَكَ وَاسْتَعْمِلْنِىْ فِىْ طَاعَتِكَ وَاجْعَلْ رَغْبَتِىْ فِيْمَا عِنْدَكَ وَ تَوَفَّنِىْ عَلٰى مِلَّتِكَ وَ مِلَّةِ رَسُوْلِكَ صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَ اٰلِهٖ

ALLAAHUMMA AWSI' A'LAYYA MIN FADLIKA WA ATMIM A'LAYYA NI'MATAKA WASTA'MILNEE FEE TAA'TIKA WAJ-A'L RAGHBATEE FEEMAA I'NDAKA WA TAWAFFANEE A'LAA MILLATIKA WA MILLATI RASOOLIKA SALLAL LAAHO A'LAYHI WA AALIH

and O Allah, enlarge Your bounty upon me, complete Your favor upon me, employ me in obedience to You, place my desire in what is with You, and cause me to die upon Your religion and the religion of Your Messenger — Allah's blessings be upon him and his Household.

Fifth: Imam al-Rida (a) said his father would say this whenever he left his house:

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ خَرَجْتُ بِحَوْلِ اللّٰهِ وَ قُوَّتِهِ لَابِحَوْلٍ مِّنِّىْ وَ لَا قُوَّتِىْ بَلْ بِحَوْلِكَ وَ قُوَّتِكَ يَا رَبِّ مُتَعَرِّضًا لِرِزْقِكَ فَاْتِنِىْ بِهِ فِىْ عَافِيَةٍ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM KHARAJTU BI-HAWLIL LAAHI WA QUWWATIHI LAA BI-HAWLIM MINNEE WA LAA QUWWATEE BAL BI-HAWLIKA WA QUWWATIKA YAA RABBI MUTA'ARRIDAL LI-RIZQIKA FA-TINEE BIHI FEE A'AAFIYAH

In the name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful. I have gone out by Allah's power and strength, not by any power or strength of my own, but by Your power and Your strength, O my Lord, presenting myself before Your sustenance; so bring it to me in well-being.

Sixth: Imam al-Sadiq (a) said whoever recites [Surah al-Ikhlas](A116) ten times before leaving his house will be kept under Allah's safeguard and protection until he returns home.

Seventh: Imam Abu'l-Hasan Musa al-Kazim (a) said: when intending to travel, stand at the door of your house and recite [Surah al-Faatehah](A5) facing ahead, then to your right, then to your left, followed by [Surah al-Ikhlas](A116), [Surah al-Falaq](A117), and [Surah al-Nas](A118). Then say:

اَللّٰهُمَّ احْفَظْنِىْ وَاحْفَظْ مَا مَعِىَ وَ سَلِّمْنِىْ وَ سَلِّمْ مَا مَعِىَ وَ بَلِّغْنِىْ وَ بَلِّغْ مَا مَعِىَ بَلَاغًا حَسَنًا

ALLAAHUMMAH FAZNEE WAHFAZ MAA MA-I WA SALLIMNEE WA SALLIM MAA MA-I WA BALLIGHNEE WA BALLIGH MAA MA-I BALAAGHAN HASANAA

O Allah, protect me and protect what is with me, deliver me safely and deliver safely what is with me, and bring me to my destination and bring what is with me to their destination, in a goodly arrival.

Eighth: Imam Musa al-Kazim (a) said: whenever you leave your house, whether traveling or going somewhere within your city, say:

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ اٰمَنْتُ بِاللّٰهِ وَ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللّٰهِ مَا شَاۤءَ اللّٰهُ لَا حَوْلَ وَ لَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللّٰهِ

BISMIL LAAHI AAMANTU BILLAAHI WA TAWAKKALTU A'LAL LAAHI MAA SHAAA-AL LAAHU LAA HAWLA WA LAA QUWWATA ILLAA BILLAAH

In the name of Allah, I believe in Allah, and I put my trust in Allah — what Allah wills (comes to be); there is no power and no strength except by Allah.
