Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEME

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

شَهِدَ اللَّهُ اَنَّهٗ لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ

SHAHEDAL LAAHO ANNAHU LAA ELAAHA ILLAA HOWA

“Allah bears witness that there is no god but He,

وَالْمَلائِكَةُ وَاولُوا الْعِلْمِ

WAL MALAAA-EKATO WA OOLUL I’LME

and (so do) the angels and those possessed of knowledge,

قَائِماً بِالْقِسْطِ

QAAA-EMAN BIL-QISTE

maintaining His creation with justice;

لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الْحَكِيمُ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAA HOWAL A’ZEEZUL HAKEEMO

there is no god but He, the Mighty, the Wise.

اِنَّ الدِّينَ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الاِسْلَامُ

INNAD DEENA I’NDAL LAAHIL ISLAAMO

Surely, the (true) religion with Allah is Islam.”

وَانَا الْعَبْدُ الضَّعِيفُ الْمُذْنِبُ

WA ANAL A’BDUZ ZA-E’EFUL MUZNEBO

I am the slave—feeble, sinful,

الْعَاصِي الْمُحْتَاجُ الْحَقِيرُ

AL-A’ASIL MOHTAAJUL HAQEERO

disobedient, needy, and ignoble—

اَشْهَدُ لِمُنْعِمِي وَخَاِلقِي

ASH-HADO LE-MUN-E’MEE WA KHAALEQEE

I testify to my Benefactor, Creator,

وَرَازِقِي وَمُكْرِمِي

WA RAAZEQEE WA MUKREMEE

Provider of me with my sustenance, and my Honorer,

كَمَا شَهِدَ لِذَاتِهٖ

KAMAA SHAHEDA LE-ZAATEHI

as same as He has testified to Himself

وَشَهِدَتْ لَهُ الْمَلائِكَةُ

WA SHAHEDAT LAHUL MALAAA-EKATO

and the angels have testified to Him

وَاولُوا الْعِلْمِ مِنْ عِبَادِهٖ

WA OOLUL I’LME MIN E’BAADEHI

so have those possessed with knowledge amongst His servants

بِانَّهٗ لَا اِلٰهَ اِلَّا هُوَ

BE-ANNAHU LAA ELAAHA ILLAA HOWA

that there is no god save Him

ذُو النِّعَمِ وَالاِحْسَانِ

ZUN NE-A’ME WAL EHSAANE

the Lord of bounties, favors,

وَالْكَرَمِ وَالاِمْتِنَانِ

WAL KARAME WAL IMTENAANE

generosity, and kindness.

قَادِرٌ ازَلِيٌّ

QAADERUN AZALIYYUN

He is Omnipotent, Eternal,

عَالِمٌ ابَدِيٌّ

A’ALEMUN ABADIYYUN

All-knowing, Everlasting,

حَيٌّ احَدِيٌّ

HAYYUN AHADIYYUN

Ever-living, One and Only,

مَوْجُودٌ سَرْمَدِيٌّ

MAWJOODUN SARMADIYYUN

Self-existent, Endless,

سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ

SAMEE-U’N BASEERUN

All-hearing, All-Seeing,

مُرِيدٌ كَارِهٌ

MOREEDUN KAAREHUN

Willing, Disapproving,

مُدْرِكٌ صَمَدِيٌّ

MUDREKUN SAMADIYYUN

All-aware, and eternally Besought of all.

يَسْتَحِقُّ هٰذِهِ الصِّفَاتُ

YASTAHIQQO HAAZEHIS SEFAATO

He is worthy of all these attributes,

وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ مَا هُوَ عَلَيْهِ فِي عِزِّ صِفَاتِهٖ

WA HOWA A’LAA MAA HOWA A’LAYHE FEE I’ZZE SEFAATEHI

and He, characterized by all these sublime attributes,

كَانَ قَوْيّاً قَبْلَ وُجُودِ الْقُدْرَةِ وَالْقُوَّةِ

KAANA QAWIYYAN QABLA WOJOODIL QUDRATE WAL QUWWATE

was All-powerful prior to the existence of might and power,

وَكَانَ عَلِيماً قَبْلَ اِيجَادِ الْعِلْمِ وَالْعِلَّةِ

WA KAANA A’ALEMAN QABLA EEJAADIL I’LME WAL I’LLATE

and All-knowing before the origination of knowledge and reason.

لَمْ يَزَلْ سُلْطَاناً اِذْ لَا مَمْلَكَةَ وَلَا مَالَ

LAM YAZAL SULTAANAN IZ LAA MAMLAKATA WA LAA MAALA

He has been always Authority when there was neither sovereignty nor wealth.

وَلَمْ يَزَلْ سُبْحَاناً عَلَىٰ جَمِيعِ الاحْوَاِل

WA LAM YAZAL SUBHAANAN A’LAA JAMEE-I’L AHWAALE

He has been always Glorious under all circumstances.

وُجُودُهٗ قَبْلَ الْقَبْلِ فِي اَزَلِ الآزَاِل

WOJOODOHU QABLAL QABLE FEE AZALIL AAZAALE

His Being is before all precedence in the pre-eternity of sempiternity.

وَبَقَاؤُهٗ بَعْدَ الْبَعْدِ مِنْ غَيْرِ انتِقَالٍ وَلَا زَوَالٍ

WA BAQAAA-OHU BA’DAL BA’DE MIN GHAYRIN TEQAALINW WA LAA ZAWAALIN

His Remaining will be after all endings without any extinction or disappearance.

غَنِيٌّ فِي الاوَّلِ وَالآخِرِ

GHANIYYUN FIL AWWALE WAL AAKHERE

He is self-Sufficient at the beginning and at the end

مُسْتَغْنٍ فِي الْبَاطِنِ وَالظَّاهِرِ

MUSTAGHNIN FIL BAATENE WAZ ZAAHERE

and All-independent inwardly and outwardly.

لَا جَوْرَ فِي قَضِيَّتِهٖ

LAA JAWRA FEE QAZIYYATEHI

There is no injustice in His judgment,

وَلَا مَيْلَ فِي مَشِيئَتِهٖ

WA LAA MAYLA FEE MASHEE-ATEHI

nor is there unfairness in His management,

وَلَا ظُلْمَ فِي تَقْدِيرِهٖ

WA LAA ZULMA FEE TAQDEEREHI

nor is there unfairness in His administration,

وَلَا مَهْرَبَ مِنْ حُكُومَتِهٖ

WA LAA MAHRABA MIN HOKOOMATEHI

nor is there any escape from His sovereignty,

وَلَا مَلْجَا مِنْ سَطَوَاتِهٖ

WA LAA MALJAA MIN SATAWAATEHI

nor is there any shelter against His firm grip,

وَلَا مَنجىٰ مِنْ نَقِمَاتِهٖ

WA LAA MANJAN MIN NAQEMATEHI

nor is there any salvation from His punishment.

سَبَقَتْ رَحْمَتُهٗ غَضَبَهٗ

SABAQAT RAHMATOHU GHAZABAHU

His mercy overtakes His Wrath.

وَلَا يَفُوتُهٗ اَحَدٌ اِذَا طَلَبَهُ

WA LAA YAFOOTOHU AHADUN EZAA TALABAHU

None can escape Him when He summons.

ازَاحَ الْعِلَلَ فِي التَّكْلِيفِ

AZAAHAL E’LALA FIT TAKLEEFE

He has removed all excuses in (imposing) obligations,

وَسَوَّىٰ التَّوْفِيقَ بَيْنَ الضَّعِيفِ وَالشَّرِيفِ

WA SAWWAT TAWFEEQA BAYNAZ ZA-E’EFE WASH SHAREEFE

treats absolutely equally the weak and the noble,

مَكَّنَ اَدَاءَ الْمَامُورِ

MAKKANA ADAAA-AL MAAMOORE

makes capable to carry out His commands,

وَسَهَّلَ سَبِيلَ اجْتِنَابِ الْمَحْظُورِ

WA SAHHALA SABEELAJ TENAABIL MAHZOORE

and makes easy to abstain from His prohibitions.

لَمْ يُكَلِّفِ الطَّاعَةَ اِلَّا دُونَ الْوُسْعِ وَالطَّاقَةِ

LAM YOKALLEFIT TAA-A’TA ILLAA DOONAL WUS-E’ WAT TAAQATE

He does not make obedience a burden but according to one's real capacity.

سُبْحَانَهٗ مَا ابْيَنَ كَرَمَهٗ

SUBHAANAHU MAA ABYANA KARAMAHU

All glory be to Him! How manifest His generosity is!

وَاعْلَىٰ شَانَهٗ

WA A-A’LAA SHAANAHU

How sublime His standing is!

سُبْحَانَهٗ مَا اَجَلَّ نَيلَهٗ

SUBHAANAHU MAA AJALLA NAYLAHU

All glory be to Him! How magnificent His bestowal is!

وَاعْظَمَ اِحْسَانَهٗ

WA A-A’ZAMA EHSAANAHU

How splendid His favors are!

بَعَثَ الانْبِيَاءَ لِيُبَيِّنَ عَدْلَهٗ

BA-A’SAL ANBEYAAA-A LE-YOBAYYENA A’DLAHU

He has sent the Prophets in order to show His justice,

وَنَصَبَ الاوْصِيَاءَ لِيُظْهِرَ طَوْلَهٗ وَفَضْلَهٗ

WA NASABAL AWSEYAAA-A LE-YUZHERA TAWLAHU WA FAZLAHU

and appointed successors [for the Prophets] in order to make known His munificence and grace.

وَجَعَلَنَا مِنْ امَّةِ سَيِّدِ الانْبِيَاءِ

WA JA-A’LANAA MIN UMMATE SAYYEDIL ANBEYAAA-E

He has made us of the community of the Chief of Prophets,

وَخَيْرِ الاوْلِيَاءِ

WA KHAYRIL AWLEYAAA-E

the most favorable of His saints,

وَافْضَلِ الاصْفِيَاءِ

WA AFZALIL ASFEYAAA-E

the best of His elite ones,

وَاعْلىٰ الازْكِيَاءِ

WA A-A’LAL AZKEYAAA-E

and the most sublime of the pure ones;

مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّىٰ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهٖ وَسَلَّمَ

MOHAMMADIN SALLAL LAAHO A’LAYHE WA AALEHI WA SALLAMA

that is Muhammad, may Allah send blessings and benedictions upon him and his Household.

آمَنَّا بِهٖ وَبِمَا دَعَانَا اِلَيْهِ

AAMANNAA BEHI WA BEMAA DA-A’ANAA ELAYHE

We thus believe in him, in all that to which he has called us,

وَبِالْقُرْآنِ الَّذِي انْزَلَهٗ عَلَيْهِ

WA BIL-QUR-AANIL LAZEE ANZALAHU A’LAYHE

in the Qur'an which He revealed to him,

وَبِوَصِيِّهِ الَّذِي نَصَبَهٗ يَوْمَ الْغَدِيرِ

WA BE-WASIYYEHIL LAZEE NASABAHU YAWMAL GHADEERE

and in his Successor whom he appointed on the Ghadir Day

وَاشَارَ اِلَيْهِ بِقَوْلِهٖ: "هٰذَا عَلِيٌّ"

WA ASHAARA ELAYHE BE-QAWLEHI HAAZAA A’LIYYUN

and to whom he referred by saying, “This is `Ali.”

وَاشْهَدُ اَنَّ الائِمَّةَ الابْرَارَ

WA ASH-HADO ANNAL A-IMMATAL ABRAARA

I also bear witness that the Imams—the pious

وَالْخُلَفَاءَ الاخْيَارَ

WAL KHOLAFAAA-AL AKHYAARA

and benign vicegerents [of Allah]

بَعْدَ الرَّسُولِ الْمُخْتَارِ

BA’DAR RASOOLIL MUKHTAARE

after the Chosen Prophet are:

عَلِيٌّ قَامِعُ الْكُفَّارِ

A’LIYYUN QAAME-U’L KUFFAARE

`Ali, the subduer of the infidels.

وَمِنْ بَعْدِهٖ سَيِّدُ اوْلَادِهِ الْحَسَنُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ

WA MIM BA’DEHI SAYYEDO AWLAADEHIL HASANUBNO A’LIYYIN

Following him is the chief of his sons, al-Hasan, the son of `Ali.

ثُمَّ اخُوهُ السِّبْطُ التَّابِعُ لِمَرْضَاةِ اللَّهِ الْحُسَيْنُ

SUMMA AKHOOHUS SIBTUT TAABE-O’ LE-MARZAATIL LAAHIL HOSAYNO

Then comes his brother, the grandson and seeker of Allah’s pleasure; al-Husayn.

ثُمَّ الْعَابِدُ عَلِيٌّ

SUMMAL A’ABEDO A’LIYYUN

Then comes `Ali, the [distinctive] worshipper [of Allah].

ثُمَّ الْبَاقِرُ مُحَمَّدٌ

SUMMAL BAAQERO MOHAMMADUN

Then comes the Splitter (of knowledge), Muhammad.

ثُمَّ الصَّادِقُ جَعْفَرٌ

SUMMAS SAADEQO JA’FARUN

Then comes the veracious Ja`far.

ثُمَّ الْكَاظِمُ مُوسَىٰ

SUMMAL KAAZEMO MOOSAA

Then comes the suppressor of rage, Musa.

ثُمَّ الرِّضَا عَلِيٌّ

SUMMAR REZAA A’LIYYUN

Then comes the pleased, `Ali.

ثُمَّ التَّقِيُّ مُحَمَّدٌ

SUMMAT TAQIYYO MOHAMMADUN

Then comes the pious, Muhammad.

ثُمَّ النَّقِيُّ عَلِّيٌّ

SUMMAN NAQIYYO A’LIYYUN

Then comes the refined, `Ali.

ثُمَّ الزَّكِيُّ الْعَسْكَرِيُّ الْحَسَنُ

SUMMAZ ZAKIYYUL A’SKARIYYUL HASANO

Then comes the pure resident of `Askar, al-Hasan.

ثُمَّ الْحُجَّةُ الْخَلَفُ الْقَائِمُ

SUMMAL HUJJATUL KHALAFUL QAAA-EMO

Then comes the Argument, Successor, Assumer,

الْمُنْتَظَرُ الْمَهْدِيُّ الْمُرْجَىٰ

AL-MUNTAZARUL MAHDIYYUL MURJAA

Awaited, Well-guided, and Expected

الَّذِي بِبَقَائِهٖ بَقِيَتِ الدُّنْيَا

ALLAZEE BE-BAQAAA-EHI BAQEYATID DUNYAA

on account of whose existence, this world is kept in existence,

وَبِيُمْنِهٖ رُزِقَ الْوَرَىٰ

WA BE-YUMNEHI ROZEQAL WARAA

on account of whose blessing, the created beings are provided sustenance,

وَبِوُجُودِهٖ ثَبَتَتِ الارْضُ وَالسَّمَاءُ

WA BE-WOJOODEHI SABATATIL ARZO WAS SAMAAA-O

and on account of whose existence, the earth and the sky are kept in firmness.

وَبِهٖ يَمْلَا اللَّهُ الارْضَ قِسْطاً وَعَدْلاً

WA BEHI YAMLA-UL LAAHUL ARZA QISTANW WA A’DLAN

Through him, Allah shall fill the earth with equity and justice

بَعْدَ مَا مُلِئَتْ ظُلْماً وَجَوْراً

BA’DA MAA MOLE-AT ZULMANW WA JAWRAN

after it will be filled with inequity and injustice.

وَاشْهَدُ اَنَّ اقْوَالَهُمْ حُجَّةً

WA ASH-HADO ANNA AQWAALAHUM HUJJATUN

I also bear witness that their words are decisive arguments,

وَامْتِثَالَهُمْ فَرِيضَةً

WAM TESAALAHUM FAREEZATUN

to comply with their orders is obligatory,

وَطَاعَتَهُم مَفْرُوضَةً

WA TAA-A’TAHUM MAFROOZATUN

the obedience to them is commissioned [by Allah],

وَمَوَدَّتَهُمْ لازِمَةً مَقْضِيَّةً

WA MAWADDATAHUM LAAZEMATUM MAQZIYYATUN

to love them is necessary and pre-ordained,

وَالاِقْتِدَاءُ بِهٖم مُنجِيَةً

WAL IQTEDAAA-A BEHIM MUNJEYATUN

and to pattern after them will definitely achieve salvation,

وَمُخَالَفَتَهُم مُرْدِيَةً

WA MOKHAALAFATAHUM MURDEYATUN

but to oppose them will definitely bring about destruction.

وَهُمْ سَادَاتُ اهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ اَجْمَعِينَ

WA HUM SAADAATO AHLIL JANNATE AJMA-E’ENA

They are, moreover, the chiefs of all the inhabitants of Paradise,

وَشُفَعَاءُ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ

WA SHOFA-A’A-O YAWMID DEENE

the interceders on the Judgment Day,

وَائِمَّةُ اهْلِ الارْضِ عَلىٰ الْيَقِينِ

WA A-IMMATO AHLIL ARZE A’LAL YAQEENE

and, undoubtedly, the leaders of the inhabitants of the earth,

وَافْضَلُ الاوْصِيَاءِ الْمَرْضِيِّينَ

WA AFZALUL AWSEYAAA-IL MARZIYYEENA

and the best of the satisfied Successors [of the Prophets].

وَاشْهَدُ اَنَّ الْمَوْتَ حَقٌّ

WA ASH-HADO ANNAL MAWTA HAQQUN

I also bear witness that death is certain,

وَمُسَاءَلَةَ مُنْكَرٍ وَنَكِيرٍ فِي الْقَبْرِ حَقٌّ

WA MOSAAA-ALATA MUNKARINW WA NAKEERIN FIL QABRE HAQQUN

the interrogation by Munkar and Nakir in the grave is certain,

وَالْبَعْثَ حَقٌّ

WAL BA’SA HAQQUN

the raising of the dead is certain,

وَالنُّشُورَ حَقٌّ

WAN NOSHOORA HAQQUN

the final assemblage is certain,

وَالصِّرَاطَ حَقٌّ

WAS SERAATA HAQQUN

the Discriminating Bridge is certain,

وَالْمِيزَانَ حَقٌّ

WAL MEEZAANA HAQQUN

the Scales [of deeds] is certain,

وَالْحِسَابَ حَقٌّ

WAL HESAABA HAQQUN

the calling into account is certain,

وَالْكِتَابَ حَقٌّ

WAL KETAABA HAQQUN

the record book [of deeds] is certain,

وَالْجَنَّةَ حَقٌّ

WAL JANNATA HAQQUN

Paradise is certain,

وَالنَّارَ حَقٌّ

WAN NAARA HAQQUN

Hellfire is certain,

وَانَّ السَّاعَةَ آتِيَةٌ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهَا

WA ANNAS SAA-A’TA AATEYATUL LAA RAYBA FEEHAA

the Hour [of resurrection] will certainly come, without any dispute,

وَانَّ اللَّهَ يَبْعَثُ مَنْ فِي الْقُبُورِ

WA ANNAL LAAHA YAB-A’SO MAN FIL QOBOORE

and Allah shall raise up those who are in graves.

اللَّهُمَّ فَضْلُكَ رَجَائِي

ALLAAHUMMA FAZLOKA RAJAAA-EE

O Allah, in Your favor do I put my hope,

وَكَرَمُكَ وَرَحْمَتُكَ اَمَلِي

WA KARAMOKA WA RAHMATOKA AMALEE

Your generosity and mercy do I expect confidently,

لَا عَمَلَ لِي اسْتَحِقُّ بِهٖ الْجَنَّةَ

LAA A’MALA LEE ASTAHIQQO BEHIL JANNATA

I have no single deed by which I deserve Paradise,

وَلَا طَاعَةَ لِي اسْتَوْجِبُ بِهَا الرِّضْوَانَ

WA LAA TAA-A’TA LEE ASTAWJEBO BEHAR RIZWAANA

nor do I have any act of obedience [to You] due to which I deserve Your pleasure;

اِلَّا اِنِّي اعْتَقَدتُّ تَوْحِيدَكَ وَعَدْلَكَ

ILLAA ANNEE E’TAQADTO TAWHEEDAKA WA A’DLAKA

except that I believe in Your Oneness and Your Justice

وَارْتَجَيْتُ اِحْسَانَكَ وَفَضْلَكَ

WAR TAJAYTO EHSAANAKA WA FAZLAKA

and I hope for Your benevolence and Your favor.

وَتَشَفَّعْتُ اِلَيْكَ بِالنَّبِيِّ وَآلِهٖ مِنْ احِبَّتِكَ

WA TASHAFFA’TO ELAYKA BIN-NABIYYE WA AALEHI MIN AHIBBATEKA

I thus seek the Prophet and his Household, Your most-beloved ones, to intercede for me before You;

وَانتَ اَكْرَمُ الاكْرَمِينَ

WA ANTA AKRAMUL AKRAMEENA

and You are verily the most Generous of all those who treat generously

وَارْحَمُ الرَّاحِمِينَ

WA ARHAMUR RAAHEMEENA

and the most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

وَصَلَّىٰ اللَّهُ عَلَىٰ نَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ

WA SALLAL LAAHO A’LAA NABIYYENAA MOHAMMADIN

May Allah send blessings to Our Prophet, Muhammad

وَآلِهٖ اَجْمَعْينَ

WA AALEHI AJMA-E’ENA

and upon all of his Household,

الطَّيِّبِينَ الطَّاهِرِينَ

ATTAYYEBEENAT TAAHEREENA

the pure and immaculate,

وَسَلَّمَ تَسْلِيماً كَثِيراً كَثِيراً

WA SALLAMA TASLEEMAN KASEERAN KASEERAN

and send upon them many many benedictions.

وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ اِلَّا بِاللَّهِ الْعَلِيِّ الْعَظِيمِ

WA LAA HAWLA WA LAA QUWWATA ILLAA BILLAAHIL A’LIYYIL A’ZEEME

There is no might and no power except with Allah, the All-high, the All-great.

اللَّهُمَّ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ

ALLAAHUMMA YAA ARHAMAR RAAHEMEENA

O Allah! O most Merciful of all those who show mercy,

اِنِّي اَوْدَعْتُكَ يَقِينِي هٰذَا وَثَبَاتَ دِينِي

INNEE AWDA’TOKA YAQEENEE HAAZAA WA SABAATA DEENEE

I am depositing with You this faith of mine and my firmness on this belief;

وَانتَ خَيْرُ مُسْتَوْدَعٍ

WA ANTA KHAYRO MUSTAWDA-I’N

and You are the ever-best of all those who keep deposits.

وَقَدْ امَرْتَنَا بِحِفْظِ الْوَدَائِعِ

WA QAD AMARTANAA BE-HIFZIL WADAAA-E-E’

You have commanded us to keep safe deposits that are put with us;

فَرُدَّهٗ عَلَيَّ وَقْتَ حُضُورِ مَوْتِي

FARUDDAHU A’LAYYA WAQTA HOZOORE MAWTEE

so, (please) keep for me this deposit to give it back to me at the time of my death

وَعِنْدَ مُسَاءَلَةِ مُنْكَرٍ وَنَكِيرٍ

WA I’NDA MOSAAA-ALATE MUNKARINW WA NAKEERIN

and at the time of the interrogation of Munkar and Nakir;

بِرَحْمَتِكَ يَا اَرْحَمَ الرَّاحِمِينَ

BE-RAHMATEKA YAA ARHAMAR RAAHEMEENA

[I beseech You] in the name of Your mercy; O most Merciful of all those who show mercy.

اللَّهُمَّ اِنِّي اَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ العَدِيلَةِ عِنْدَ الْمَوْتِ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE A-O’OZO BEKA MENAL A’DEELATE I’NDAL MAWTE

O Allah, I seek Your protection against deviation at the hour of death.
