Common Aamal at each of the three Qadr Nights

Text and Translation

First: It is recommended to bathe oneself at each of the Qadr Nights. According to Allamah al-Majlisi, it is preferable to perform the bathing at sunset so as to be ready for the Isha prayer with a bathing.

Second: It is recommended to offer a two-unit prayer, reciting at each unit [Surah al-Faatehah](A5) once and repeating [Surah al-Ikhlas](A116) seven times. After finishing, repeat the following seventy times:

اَسْتَغْفِرُ اللهَ وَاَتُوْبُ اِلَيْهِ

ASTAGHFIRUL LAAHA WA ATOOBU ILAYH

I implore Allah's forgiveness and I repent before Him.

According to a Hadith reported from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), Almighty Allah will forgive whoever offers this prayer, and will forgive his parents, before he leaves his place.

Third: It is recommended to open a copy of the Holy Qur'an between one's hands and say:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ اَسْاَلُكَ بِكِتَابِكَ الْمُنْزَلِ وَمَا فِيْهِ وَفِيْهِ اسْمُكَ الْاَكْبَرُ وَاَسْمَاۤؤُكَ الْحُسْنٰى

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AS-ALUKA BI-KITAABIKAL MUNZALI WA MAA FEEHI WA FEEHIS MUKAL AKBARU WA ASMAAA-UKAL HUSNAA

O Allah, I ask You by Your revealed Book and what is in it, and in it is Your Greatest Name and Your most beautiful Names,

وَمَا يُخَافُ وَيُرْجٰى اَنْ تَجْعَلَنِيْ مِنْ عُتَقَاۤئِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ

WA MAA YUKHAAFU WA YURJAA AN TAJ-A'LANEE MIN U'TAQAAA-IKA MINAN NAAR

and what is feared and hoped for, that You make me among those You have freed from the Fire.

One may then pray for the fulfillment of one's desires.

Fourth: It is recommended to place a copy of the Holy Qur'an on the head and say:

اَللّٰهُمَّ بِحَقِّ هٰذَا الْقُرْاٰنِ وَبِحَقِّ مَنْ اَرْسَلْتَهُ بِهِ

ALLAAHUMMA BI-HAQQI HAAZAL QUR-AANI WA BI-HAQQI MAN ARSALTAHU BIH

O Allah, by the right of this Qur'an, and by the right of the one You sent with it,

وَبِحَقِّ كُلِّ مُؤْمِنٍ مَدَحْتَهُ فِيْهِ وَبِحَقِّكَ عَلَيْهِمْ فَلَا اَحَدَ اَعْرَفُ بِحَقِّكَ مِنْكَ

WA BI-HAQQI KULLI MU'MININ MADAHTAHU FEEHI WA BI-HAQQIKA A'LAYHIM FALAA AHADA A'RAFU BI-HAQQIKA MINK

and by the right of every believer You have praised in it, and by Your right upon them — for no one knows Your right better than You.

Then repeat the following ten times:

بِكَ يَاۤ اَللهُ بِمُحَمَّدٍ بِعَلِيٍّ بِفَاطِمَةَ بِالْحَسَنِ بِالْحُسَيْنِ بِعَلِيِّ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ بِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ بِجَعْفَرِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ بِمُوْسَى بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ بِعَلِيِّ بْنِ مُوْسٰى بِمُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ بِعَلِيِّ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ بِالْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَلِيٍّ بِالْحُجَّةِ

BIKA YAA ALLAAHO BI-MUHAMMADIN BI-A'LEE-YIN BI-FAATIMATA BIL HASANI BIL HUSAYNI BI-A'LEE-YIBNIL HUSAYNI BI-MUHAMMADIBNI A'LEE-YIN BI-JA'FARIBNI MUHAMMADIN BI-MOOSAA IBNI JA'FARIN BI-A'LEE-YIBNI MOOSAA BI-MUHAMMADIBNI A'LEE-YIN BI-A'LEE-YIBNI MUHAMMADIN BIL HASANIBNI A'LEE-YIN BIL HUJJAH

By You, O Allah; by Muhammad; by Ali; by Fatimah; by al-Hasan; by al-Husayn; by Ali ibn al-Husayn; by Muhammad ibn Ali; by Ja'far ibn Muhammad; by Musa ibn Ja'far; by Ali ibn Musa; by Muhammad ibn Ali; by Ali ibn Muhammad; by al-Hasan ibn Ali; by al-Hujjah.

One should then pray Almighty Allah for the fulfillment of one's desires.

Fifth: It is advisable to visit the holy tomb of Imam al-Husayn (a) on these nights. A Hadith reads that at the Qadr Nights, a caller from the heavens calls out from the Seventh Sky, and specifically from the center of the Holy Throne, that Almighty Allah shall forgive whoever visits the tomb of al-Husayn (a).

Sixth: It is highly advisable to spend the whole three Qadr Nights in acts of worship. A Hadith reads that whoever spends the whole Qadr Nights in worship will have all his sins forgiven, even if they are as many as the stars, as heavy as the mountains, and as weighty as the seawater.

Seventh: To win its remarkable reward, it is recommended to offer the one-hundred-unit prayer, reciting at each unit [Surah al-Faatehah](A5) once and repeating [Surah al-Ikhlas](A116) ten times.

Eighth: It is recommended to say the following supplicatory prayer:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اِنِّىْ اَمْسَيْتُ لَكَ عَبْدًا دَاخِرًا لَا اَمْلِكُ لِنَفْسِيْ نَفْعًا وَلَا ضَرًّا وَلَا اَصْرِفُ عَنْهَا سُوْۤءًا

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE AMSAYTU LAKA A'BDAN DAAKHIRAN LAA AMLIKU LI-NAFSEE NAF-A'N WA LAA DARRAN WA LAA ASRIFU A'NHAA SOOO-AA

O Allah, I have entered this evening as Your humble servant, having no power to bring myself benefit or harm, nor to turn evil away from myself,

اَشْهَدُ بِذٰلِكَ عَلٰى نَفْسِيْ وَاَعْتَرِفُ لَكَ بِضَعْفِ قُوَّتِيْ وَقِلَّةِ حِيْلَتِيْ

ASH-HADU BI-ZAALIKA A'LAA NAFSEE WA A'TARIFU LAKA BI-DA'FI QUWWATEE WA QILLATI HEELATEE

I bear witness to that against myself, and I confess to You the weakness of my strength and the paucity of my resource,

فَصَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَاَنْجِزْ لِيْ مَا وَعَدْتَنِيْ وَجَمِيْعَ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ مِنَ الْمَغْفِرَةِ فِيْ هٰذِهِ اللَّيْلَةِ

FASALLI A'LAA MUHAMMADIN WA AALI MUHAMMADIN WA ANJIZ LEE MAA WA-A'DTANEE WA JAMEE-A'L MU'MINEENA WAL MU'MINAATI MINAL MAGHFIRATI FEE HAAZIHIL LAYLAH

so bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, and fulfil for me — and for all the believing men and women — what You have promised of forgiveness on this night,

وَاَتْمِمْ عَلَيَّ مَا اٰتَيْتَنِيْ فَاِنِّيْ عَبْدُكَ الْمِسْكِيْنُ الْمُسْتَكِيْنُ الضَّعِيْفُ الْفَقِيْرُ الْمَهِيْنُ

WA ATMIM A'LAYYA MAA AATAYTANEE FA-INNEE A'BDUKAL MISKEENUL MUSTAKEENUD DA-E'EFUL FAQEERUL MAHEEN

and complete for me what You have given me, for I am Your poor, humble, weak, needy, lowly servant.

اَللّٰهُمَّ لَا تَجْعَلْنِيْ نَاسِيًا لِذِكْرِكَ فِيْمَا اَوْلَيْتَنِيْ وَلَا لِاِحْسَانِكَ فِيْمَا اَعْطَيْتَنِيْ

ALLAAHUMMA LAA TAJ-A'LNEE NAASIYAL LI-ZIKRIKA FEEMAA AWLAYTANEE WA LAA LI-IHSAANIKA FEEMAA A'TAYTANEE

O Allah, do not make me forgetful of Your remembrance in what You have bestowed on me, nor of Your kindness in what You have given me,

وَلَا اٰيِسًا مِنْ اِجَابَتِكَ وَاِنْ اَبْطَاَتَ عَنِّيْ فِيْ سَرَّاۤءَ اَوْ ضَرَّاۤءَ اَوْ شِدَّةَ اَوْ رَخَاۤءَ

WA LAA AAYISAM MIN IJAABATIKA WA IN ABTA-AT A'NNEE FEE SARRAAA-I AW DARRAAA-I AW SHIDDATIN AW RAKHAAA-I

nor despairing of Your response, even if it be delayed for me, whether in ease or hardship, in adversity or comfort,

اَوْ عَافِيَةٍ اَوْ بَلَاۤءٍ اَوْ بُؤْسٍ اَوْ نَعْمَاۤءَ اِنَّكَ سَمِيْعُ الدُّعَاۤءِ

AW A'AAFIYATIN AW BALAAA-IN AW BU'SIN AW NA'MAAA-I INNAKA SAMEE-U'D DUA-A'

in well-being or trial, in misery or blessing; verily You are the Hearer of supplications.

Al-Kaf'ami has narrated that Imam Zayn al-Abidin (a) used to say this supplicatory prayer very frequently at the Qadr Nights while sitting, standing, bowing, and prostrating.

Allamah al-Majlisi has mentioned that the most favorable rite at the Qadr Nights is to implore Almighty Allah's forgiveness, to mention Him, and to pray for the settlement of one's worldly and religious affairs as well as for one's parents, relatives, and brethren-in-faith — the dead and the living — and to invoke blessings upon the Holy Prophet and his Household.

According to some narrations, it is recommended to say [Dua Jawshan al-Kabir](E29) at the three Qadr Nights.

It has also been narrated that when the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) was asked about the best prayer to say on the Qadr Night, he said, "Pray for good health."
