Merits
The EId al-Ghadeer is the Greatest feast day of Almighty Allah. It is also the feast of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)’s Household. It is in fact the most celebrated feast day. All the Prophets that Almighty Allah appointed used to celebrate this day and maintain its sanctity. In the heavens, this day is called “the Day of the Promised Covenant” and in the earth “the Day of the Exacted Covenant and the Witnessed Crowd.”
It has been narrated that when Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) was asked whether Muslims have a feast day other than Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Azhaa, and Fridays, he (a.s.) answered, “Yes, they have. There is still the holiest feast day, which falls on the day when the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) appointed Ameer al-Momineen - Imam Ali (a.s.) - (as his successor and the coming leader of the Muslim community). On that day, the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) declared, ‘Whoever has regarded me as his master must now regard Ali as his master.’ It falls on the eighteenth of Zilhajj.”
When he was asked about the deeds that should be done on that day, Imam al-Sadiq (a.s.) instructed, “(The best acts on this day are) observance of fasting, acts of worship, mention of the Household of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), and invocation of blessings upon them. The Holy Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) instructed Imam Ali Ameer al-Momineen (a.s.) to betake that day as feast. Similarly, the Prophets (a.s.) used to instruct their successors to betake the eighteenth of Zilhajj as feast day.”
Abu Nasr al-Bizanti has narrated that Imam al-Reza (a.s.) said to him, “Wherever you are, try to be present on the Ghadeer Day at the tomb of Imam Ali Ameer al-Momineen (a.s.). Verily, Almighty Allah will forgive the sins of sixty years for any believer and Muslim - male and female - on that day and will release from Hellfire twice as many as the number of those whom He releases from Hellfire in the month of Ramazan, at the Qadr Night and at the Eid al-Fitr Night. A single dirham (a currency) that is given as alms on this day to the believing brethren is equal to one thousand dirhams (that are given as alms on other occasions). Try to do favors to your brethren on this day and try to please each believing man and woman. By Allah I swear, if people recognized the reality of this day, the angels should shake hands with them ten times a day.”
To sum it up, to honor this day is necessary.

Various Doxologies
The devotional acts on the Eid al-Ghadeer Day are as follows:
First: It is recommended to observe fasting on this day, for it erases the sins of sixty years. Furthermore, it has been narrated that to observe fasting on this day is equal to the observance of fasting of one’s whole lifetime and its reward is equal to the rewards of one hundred times of Hajj and Umrah.
Second: It is recommended to bathe oneself on this day.
Third: It is recommended to visit the holy tomb of Imam Ali Ameer al-Momineen (a.s.). It is necessary to do one’s best to attend at the holy tomb of Imam Ali (a.s.) on this day even if such a journey be difficult. Three forms of Ziyarat have been decided for this day. The first is the familiar [Ziyarat Ameenullah](G2), which can be practiced whether one is present at the holy tomb or is far away from it.
Fourth: It is recommended to say the supplication of seeking Almighty Allah’s protection against Satan (i.e. Istea'azah), which is mentioned by Sayyid Ibn Tawus, in his book of Iqbal al-Aa’maal, who has reported it from the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.).
Namaz on the Day of Ghadeer
Fifth: It is recommended to offer a two unit prayer. After accomplishment, one should prostrate oneself and thank Almighty Allah one hundred times. Then, one should raise the head from the prostration and say the following:

O Allah, indeed I ask You by virtue of the fact that all praise belongs to You alone, You have no partner; and that You are One, Unique, Absolute, Who begets not nor is He begotten, and there is none like unto Him; and that Muhammad is Your servant and Your Messenger, Your blessings be upon him and his family. O He Who every day is engaged in a matter! Just as it was part of Your matter that You bestowed favor upon me by making me among the people who answer You, the people of Your religion, and the people of Your call, and You guided me to that at the very beginning of my creation out of Your grace, generosity, and bounty; then You followed up favor with favor, bounty with bounty, and generosity with generosity, out of Your kindness and mercy, until You renewed that covenant for me, a thorough renewal after Your renewal of my creation, when I was something forgotten, unremembered, oblivious, inadvertent, and heedless. Thus, You completed Your blessing by reminding me of it, favored me with it, and guided me to it. So let it be part of Your matter, O my God, my Master, and my Chief, to complete this for me and not to strip me of it until You take me in death while I am upon this state and You are well-pleased with me; for You are the most entitled of all benefactors to complete Your blessing upon me. O Allah, we have heard, we have obeyed, and we have answered Your caller through Your favor, so to You belongs all praise. We seek Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the eventual return. We believe in Allah alone, Who has no partner, and in His Messenger Muhammad; we have verified [the truth], answered the caller of Allah, and followed the Messenger in accepting the guardianship (Wilayah) of our master and the master of the believers, the Commander of the Faithful (Amir al-Mu'minin), Ali ibn Abi Talib—the servant of Allah, the brother of His Messenger, the Greatest Truthful One (al-Siddiq al-Akbar), the proof over His creation, through whom He supported His Prophet and His religion, the manifest truth, a beacon for the religion of Allah, a treasurer of His knowledge, the repository of the unseen of Allah, the location of the secret of Allah, the trustee of Allah over His creation, and His witness among His creatures. O Allah, our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, saying, 'Believe in your Lord,' so we have believed. Our Lord, forgive us our sins, expiate from us our evil deeds, and take us in death with the righteous. Our Lord, grant us what You promised us through Your Messengers and do not disgrace us on the Day of Resurrection; indeed, You never break Your promise. For indeed, O our Lord, by Your favor and Your kindness, we have answered Your caller, followed the Messenger, and believed him; and we have believed the master of the believers, and we have disbelieved in the false sorcerer (Jibt) and the tyrant (Taghut). Therefore, turn us toward that which we have turned to, and gather us with our Imams, for we are believers in them, certain of them, and submissive to them. We believe in their secret and their public, their witness and their absent, their living and their dead. We are well-pleased with them as Imams, leaders, and masters; they are sufficient for us between us and Allah to the exclusion of the rest of His creation—we seek no substitute for them, nor do we take any intimate support besides them. We disassociate ourselves before Allah from everyone who waged war against them, from among the jinn and mankind, from the first to the last; and we disavow the false sorcerer (Jibt), the tyrant (Taghut), the four idols, their factions, their followers, and everyone who aligned with them from among the jinn and mankind, from the beginning of time to its end. O Allah, indeed we call You to witness that we profess the religion that Muhammad and the family of Muhammad (may the blessings of Allah be upon him and upon them) professed. Our word is what they said, and our religion is what they practiced as religion; what they spoke of, we speak of, and what they took as religion, we take as religion. What they denied, we deny; whomever they aligned with, we align with; whomever they cursed, we curse; whomever they disassociated from, we disassociate from; and whomever they invoked mercy upon, we invoke mercy upon. We believe, we submit, we are well-pleased, and we follow our masters—may the blessings of Allah be upon them. O Allah, so complete this for us and do not strip us of it. Make it permanently settled and firmly established with us, and do not make it a temporary loan. Keep us alive upon it as long as You keep us alive, and cause us to die upon it when You cause us to die. The family of Muhammad are our Imams, so by them we lead ourselves, to them we give our allegiance, and their enemy—the enemy of Allah—we oppose. Therefore, place us with them in this world and the Hereafter, and make us among those brought near [to You]; for indeed, we are well-pleased with that, O Most Merciful of the merciful.
One may then prostrate oneself again and repeat each of the following doxological prayers one hundred times:
ALHAMDO LILLAAHE SHUKRAN LILLAAHE.
All praise is for Allah, and thanks be to Allah.
According to a narration, to practice this act brings about the same reward of one who was present at that day and swore allegiance to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) as regards the divinely commissioned leadership (wilayah) of Imam Ali (a.s.). Besides, it is preferable to offer this prayer at midday (zohr), which is the very time when the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) declared the successorship and leadership of Imam Ali (a.s.) at Ghadeer Khumm. It is also preferable to recite Surah al-Qadr at the first unit of the prayer and Surah al-Tawheed at the second (of course, after Surah al-Faatehah).
More Zikrs
Sixth: It is recommended to bathe oneself and offer a two unit prayer half an hour before midday (zohr). At each unit, one should recite Surah al-Faatehah once, Surah al-Tawheed ten times, Ayah al-Kursi ten times, and Surah al-Qadr ten times. The reward of practicing this act is equal, in the sight of Almighty Allah, to the rewards of one hundred thousand times of Hajj and one hundred thousand times of Umrah. Almighty Allah will also grant all the worldly and religious needs of the performer with easiness and good health.
It is however worth mentioning that Sayyid Ibn Taaoos, in Iqbal al-Aa’maal, referring to this prayer, has preceded Surah al-Qadr to Ayah al-Kursi. Also, Allamah al-Majlisi, in Zaad al-Ma’ad, mentioned that Surah al-Qadr should be preceded to Ayah al-Kursi. But it is found out that the majority of scholars who have mentioned this prayer preceded Ayah al-Kursi to Surah al-Qadr. At any rate, there is probability that such confusion has occurred due to an error in writing by Sayyed Ibn Taaoos himself or the copiers of the book, since Sayyid Ibn Taaoos is too lofty to disagree with the consensus of the other scholars. Finally, Almighty Allah alone knows the most accurate form.
It is preferable to say the supplicatory prayer that begins with the following statement, after this prayer:
Seventh: It is recommended to say [Dua al-Nudbah](E34).
Eighth: It is recommended to say the following supplicatory prayer, which is reported by Sayyid Ibn Taaoos from Shaykh al-Mufeed:

O Allah, indeed I ask You by the right of Muhammad Your Prophet and Ali Your close friend, and by the status and the measure with which You have uniquely favored them both to the exclusion of the rest of Your creation, that You bless Muhammad and Ali, and that You begin with them both in every immediate good. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the leading Imams, the master callers, the brilliant stars, the radiant beacons, the statesmen of the servants, the pillars of the lands, the sent-forth she-camel, and the rescuing ark that courses through the overwhelming deep waters. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the treasurers of Your knowledge, the pillars of Your monotheism, the supports of Your religion, the sources of Your nobility, Your elite selection from Your creation, and Your chosen ones from Your creatures—the God-fearing, the pure, the noble, the righteous, and the gate through which mankind is tested: whoever comes to it is saved, and whoever rejects it falls into destruction. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, the People of the Remembrance (Ahl al-Dhikr) whom You commanded to be questioned, and the near kindred whose love You commanded and whose right You made obligatory, and for whom You made Paradise the ultimate return for whoever follows their traces. O Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, just as they commanded obedience to You, forbade disobedience to You, and guided Your servants to Your Oneness. O Allah, indeed I ask You by the right of Muhammad Your Prophet, Your elite choice, Your select friend, Your trustee, and Your Messenger to Your creation; and by the right of the Commander of the Faithful (Amir al-Mu'minin), the chief of the religion, the leader of the radiant white-faced ones, the loyal executor, the Greatest Truthful One, the distinguisher between truth and falsehood, the witness for You, the guide to You, the proclaimer of Your command, and the warrior in Your path—never swayed in Your service by the blame of any blamer—that You bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad. And [I ask] that You place me on this day—in which You bound the covenant of Your close friend upon the necks of Your creation and perfected the religion for them—among those who recognize its sanctity and acknowledge his merit, and among those whom You liberate and set free from the Fire; and do not let those who envy Your blessings rejoice over my misfortune. O Allah, just as You made it Your greatest Eid, and named it in the heaven "the Day of the Witnessed Covenant" and on the earth "the Day of the Taken Pledge and the Questioned Assembly," bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and comfort our eyes through it, bring our unity together through it, do not misguide us after You have guided us, and make us among the thankful for Your bounties, O Most Merciful of the merciful. All praise is for Allah, Who made known to us the merit of this day, granted us insight into its sanctity, honored us through it, ennobled us with its recognition, and guided us by its light. O Messenger of Allah, O Commander of the Faithful, upon both of you, upon your progeny, and upon your lovers, be my most excellent greetings of peace, as long as the night and the day endure. Through both of you, I turn toward Allah, my Lord and your Lord, for the success of my pursuit, the fulfillment of my needs, and the easing of my affairs. O Allah, indeed I ask You by the right of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, that You bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, and that You curse whoever denied the right of this day, rejected its sanctity, and barred from Your path to extinguish Your light—but Allah refuses except to perfect His light. O Allah, grant relief to the People of the House (Ahl al-Bayt) of Muhammad Your Prophet, and remove distress from the believers through them and on their account. O Allah, fill the earth through them with justice just as it has been filled with tyranny and oppression, and fulfill for them what You have promised them; indeed, You never break Your promise.
It is also recommended to say the short supplicatory prayers that are recorded by Sayyed Ibn Taaoos in Iqbal al-Aa’maal.
Ninth: It is recommended to congratulate the brethren-in-faith on this day by saying,
ALHAMDO LILLAAHIL LAZEE JA-A’LANAA MENAL MOTAMASSEKEENA BE-WELAAYATE AMEERIL MO-MENEENA WAL A-IMMATE A’LAYHEMUS SALAAMO.
All praise is for Allah, Who made us among those who hold fast to the guardianship (Wilayah) of the Commander of the Faithful and the Imams, peace be upon them.
It is also recommended to say the following:
ALHAMDO LILLAAHIL LAZEE AKRAMANAA BE-HAAZAL YAWME WA JA-A’LANAA MENAL MOOFEENA BE-A’HDEHI ELAYNAA WA MEESAAQEHIL LAZEE WAASAQANAA BEHI MIN WELAAYATE WOLAATE AMREHI WAL QUWWAAME BE-QISTEHI WA LAM YAJ-A’LNAA MENAL JAAHEDEENA WAL MOKAZZEBEENA BE-YAWMID DEENE.
All praise is for Allah, Who honored us with this day and made us among those who fulfill His covenant to us, and His pledge with which He bound us concerning the guardianship (Wilayah) of the guardians of His command and those who establish His justice; and He did not make us among the deniers and rejecters of the Day of Judgment.
Tenth: It is recommended to repeat this doxology (zikr) one hundred times:
ALHAMDO LILLAAHIL LAZEE JA-A’LA KAMAALA DEENEHI WA TAMAAMA NE’-MATEHI BE-WELAAYATE AMEERIL MO-MENEENA A’LIYYIB NE ABEE TAALEBIN A’LAYHIS SALAAMO.
All praise is for Allah, Who made the perfection of His religion and the completion of His blessing dependent upon the guardianship (Wilayah) of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib, peace be upon him.
It is worth mentioning that a great reward has been narrated to be the share of one who, on this day, puts on the best dress, adorns himself, imparts a sweet smell, shows delight and happiness, gives pleasure to the adherents of Imam Ali Ameer al-Momineen (a.s.), pardons them, settles their needs, visits the relatives, confers upon the family members with gifts and whatever they need, offers food to the believers and the observers of fasting, shakes hands with, visits, smiles in the faces of, and presents gifts to the believers, thanks Almighty Allah for the grand bliss of recognizing the Divinely commissioned leadership of Imam Ali (a.s.), invokes blessings upon the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) and his Household (a.s.), and practices acts of worship and obedience to Almighty Allah. One dirham that is given as alms on this day to a believer is equal to one thousand dirhams that are given on other days. Finally, to offer food to a believer on this day is equal, in reward, to offering food to all the prophets and the veracious people.
Addressing a sermon on the Eid al-Ghadeer Day, Imam Ali (a.s.) said, “The reward of offering food to an observant of fasting on this day is equal to the reward of offering food to two hundred thousand prophets, veracious people, and martyrs multiplied by ten. As for one who provides for a number of believing men and women, I guarantee that Almighty Allah will secure him against atheism, poverty ...etc.”
