Aamaal of Zohr Prayers on Friday

Text and Translation

Twenty-First: Among the recommended acts on Fridays is that one may say the following supplicatory prayer at midday (zohr) as is narrated by Muhammad ibn Muslim on the authority of Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq, peace be upon him. Yet, the following form of the supplication has been quoted from Shaykh al-Tusi’s famous book entitled Misbah al-Mutahajjid:

لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اللهُ

LAA ELAAHA ILLAL LAAHO

There is no god save Allah.

وَاللهُ اَكْبَرُ

WAL LAAHO AKBARO

Allah is the Most Great.

وَسُبْحَانَ اللّٰهِ

WA SUBHAANAL LAAHE

Glory be to Allah.

وَالْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ الَّذِيْ لَمْ يَتَّخِذْ وَلَدًا

WAL HAMDO LILLAAHIL LAZEE LAM YATTAKHIZ WALADAN

All praise be to Allah Who has not taken to Himself a son

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهٗ شَرِيْكٌ فِي الْمُلْكِ

WA LAM YAKUN LAHU SHAREEKUN FIL MULKE

nor has He had any partner in sovereignty

وَلَمْ يَكُنْ لَهٗ وَلِيٌّ مِنَ الذُّلِّ

WA LAM YAKUN LAHU WALIYYUN MENAZ ZULLE

nor does He need any to protect Him from humiliation,

وَكَبِّرْهُ تَكْبِيْرًا

WA KABBIRHO TAKBEERAN

and magnify Him for His greatness and glory.

You may then say the following:

يَا سَابِغَ النِّعَمِ

YAA SAABEGHAN NE-A’ME

O Conferrer of boon amply!

يَا دَافِعَ النِّقَمِ

YAA DAAFE-A’N NE-QAME

O Repeller of troubles!

يَا بَارِءَ النَّسَمِ

YAA BAARE-AN NASAME

O Maker of souls!

يَا عَلِيَّ الْهِمَمِ

YAA A’LIYYAL HEMAME

O Sublime in determinations!

يَا مُغْشِيَ الظُّلَمِ

YAA MUGHSHEYAZ ZOLAME

O Coverer [of daylight] with darkness!

يَا ذَا الْجُوْدِ وَالْكَرَمِ

YAA ZAL JOODE WAL KARAME

O Lord of magnanimity and nobility!

يَا كَاشِفَ الضُّرِّ وَالْاَلَمِ

YAA KAASHEFAZ ZURRE WAL ALAME

O Remover of harm and pains!

يَا مُوْنِسَ الْمُسْتَوْحِشِيْنَ فِي الظُّلَمِ

YAA MOONESAL MUSTAWHESHEENE FIZ ZOLAME

O Entertainer of those lonely in darkness!

يَا عَالِمًا لَا يُعَلَّمُ

YAA A’ALEMAN LAA YO-A’LLAMO

O All-knowing Who never needs teaching!

صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADIN WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

Send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad

وَافْعَلْ بِيْ مَا اَنْتَ اَهْلُهٗ

WAF A’L BEE MAA ANTA AHLOHU

and do to me all that which befits You.

يَا مَنِ اسْمُهٗ دَوَاۤءٌ

YAA MANIS MOHU DAWAAA-UN

O He Whose Name is remedy,

وَذِكْرُهٗ شِفَاۤءٌ

WA ZIKROHU SHEFAAA-UN

the remembrance of Whom is cure,

وَطَاعَتُهٗ غَنَاۤءٌ

WA TAA-A’TOHU GHANAAA-UN

and the obedience to Whom is sufficiency,

اِرْحَمْ مَنْ رَأْسُ مَالِهِ الرَّجَاۤءُ

IRHAM MAN RAASO MAALEHIR RAJAAA-O

have mercy upon him whose wealth is only hope [for You]

وَسِلَاحُهُ الْبُكَاۤءُ

WA SELAAHOHUL BOKAAA-O

and whose weapon is only weeping.

سُبْحَانَكَ لَاۤ اِلٰهَ اِلَّا اَنْتَ

SUBHAANAKA LAAA ELAAHA ILLAA ANTA

Glory be to You. There is no god save You.

يَا حَنَّانُ يَا مَنَّانُ

YAA HANNAANO YAA MANNAANO

O All-tender, O All-Bestower,

يَا بَدِيْعَ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضِ

YAA BADEE-U’S SAMAAWAATE WAL ARZE

O Fashioner of the heavens and the earth,

يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْاِكْرَامِ.

YAA ZAL JALAALE WAL IKRAAME.

O Lord of majesty and honor.

Twenty-Second: It is recommended to recite [Surah al-Jumu’ah](A66) (No. 62) and [Surah al-Munafiqun](A67) (No. 63) in the Zohr (noon) Prayer on Fridays and to recite [Surah al-Jumu’ah](A66) and [Surah al-Tawheed](A116) in the Asr (afternoon) Prayer.

Shaykh al-Saduq has narrated that Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq(a.s.) said: It is obligatory upon all believers who claim being adherents (Shi’ah) to us (i.e. to the Ahl al-Bayt) to recite [Surah al-Jumu’ah](A66) and Surah al-A’la (No. 78) in the obligatory prayers at Friday nights and to recite [Surah al-Jumu’ah](A66) and [Surah al-Munafiqun](A67) in the Zohr Prayer on Fridays. One who does so will be regarded as following the example of the Holy Messenger, peace be upon him and his Household, and Almighty Allah will award him Paradise.

Shaykh al-Kulayni has narrated in a semi-authentic narration that al-Halabi asked Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) whether one should recite the Zohr Prayer audibly on Fridays (in case one cannot attend the congregational Friday Prayer). The Imam (a.s.) answered on the affirmative and confirmed that one should recite [Surah al-Jumu’ah](A66) and al-Munafiqun in the Zohr Prayer on Fridays.

Twenty-Third: With reference to the post-prayer litanies in general and the supplications to be said after the Friday Zohr Prayer, Shaykh al-Tusi has quoted Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq(a.s.) as saying: Whoever recites on Friday after the concluding part of the Zohr Prayer the following parts of the Holy Qur’an, will be under the divine protection all over the week:

(1) [Surah al-Faatehah](A5) seven times, (2) [Surah al-Naas](A118) seven times, (3) [Surah al-Falaq](A117) seven times, (4) [Surah al-Tawheed](A116) seven times, (5) [Surah al-Kafirun](A113) seven times, (6) the last two verses of [Surah al-Tawbah](A13) (No. 9), (7) the final verses of [Surah al-Hashr](A63), and (8) the final verses of Surah Aal-e-Imran.

Twenty-Fourth: Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) is also reported to have said: If one says the following supplicatory prayer after the Fajr Prayer or the Zohr Prayer, no sin will be recorded against him for a whole year:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْ صَلَاتَكَ

ALLAAHUMMAJ A’L SALAATAKA

O Allah, (please do) let Your blessings

وَصَلَاةَ مَلَاۤئِكَتِكَ وَرُسُلِكَ

WA SALAATA MALAAA-EKATEKA WA ROSOLEKA

and the blessings of Your angels and Messengers

عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

A’LAA MOHAMMADIN WA AALE MOHAMMADIN

be on Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad.

Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq(a.s.) is also reported to have said: If one says the following supplicatory prayer after the Fajr Prayer or the Zohr Prayer (on Fridays), he will not die before he catches the age of Imam al-Mahdi, peace be upon him:

اَللّٰهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَاٰلِ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَجِّلْ فَرَجَهُمْ

ALLAAHUMMA SALLE A’LAA MOHAMMADIN WA AALE MOHAMMADIN WA A’JJIL FARAJAHUM

O Allah, send blessings to Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad and hasten their Relief.

The earlier supplication also brings about security from misfortunes up to the next Friday if it is repeated three times after the Friday Zohr Prayer.

It has been also narrated that one who invokes Almighty Allah’s blessings upon the Holy Prophet and his Household, peace be upon them, between the two obligatory Zohr and Asr prayers will have the reward of offering a seventy-unit prayer.

Twenty-Fifth: It is recommended to say the following two supplications of al-Sahifah al-Sajjadiyyah al-Kamilah:

1) Dua No. 46

2) Dua No.48

Then, supplicate as seems proper to you and invoke blessings upon the Holy Prophet and his Household one thousand times. Thus was Imam Zayn al-’Abidin (a.s.) used to do.

Twenty-Sixth: In his book of Misbah al-Mutahajjid, Shaykh al-Tusi says that the Holy Imams, peace be upon them, are reported to have said: When one offers, after the obligatory Zohr Prayer on Fridays, a two-unit prayer reciting in each unit [Surah al-Faatehah](A5) once and repeating [Surah al-Tawheed](A116) seven times and after accomplishment says the following supplicatory prayer, one will be saved against all misfortunes and seditious matters up to the next Friday, and will be joined with Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him and his Household, and Prophet Abraham, peace be upon him:

اَللّٰهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِيْ مِنْ اَهْلِ الْجَنَّةِ

ALLAAHUMMAJ A’LNEE MIN AHLIL JANNATIL

O Allah, include me with the inhabitants of Paradise

الَّتِيْ حَشْوُهَا الْبَرَكَةُ

LATEE HASHWOHAL BARAKATO

whose stuffing is blessing

وَعُمَّارُهَا الْمَلَاۤئِكَةُ

WA U’MMAAROHAL MALAAA-EKATO

and whose constructors are the angels

مَعَ نَبِيِّنَا مُحَمَّدٍ

MA-A’ NABIYYENA MOHAMMADIN

with our Prophet Muhammad,

صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ

SALLAL LAAHO A’LAYHE WA AALEHI

peace of Allah be upon him and his Household,

وَاَبِيْنَا اِبْرَاهِيْمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ

WA ABEENAA IBRAAHEEMA A’LAYHIS SALAAMO

and our father Abraham, peace be upon him.

Commenting on this supplication, Shaykh al-Tusi instructs that one who is not from the Holy Prophet’s offspring should say, “his father (abihi)” instead of “our father (abina).”
