Merits
The month of Moharram is the month of sadness for the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) and their followers. In this respect, Imam al-Reza (a.s.) is reported to have said, “With the beginning of Moharram, my father (a.s.) would never smile at all. He would be dominated by depression for ten days. The tenth of this month would be the day of his misfortune, sadness, and weeping. He used to say that on this day Imam al-Husayn (a.s.) was slain.”

The First Night Of Muharram
Sayyed Ibn Taaoos, in Iqbal al-Aa’maal, has mentioned that a number of prayers should be advisably offered at this night:
First Prayer: A one hundred unit prayer with Surahs al-Faatehah and al-Tawheed.
Second Prayer: A two unit prayer at the first of which Surahs al-Faatehah and [al-An’aam](A10) (No. 6) are recited and at the second unit Surahs al-Faatehah and Yasin (No. 36).
Third Prayer: A two unit prayer at each of which Surah al-Faatehah is recited once and Surah al-Tawheed is repeated eleven times is offered.
The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) is reported to have said that whoever offers this prayer at this night and observes fasting the next day, which is the first day in the New Year, the New Year will be wholly good for him, and he will be saved throughout the year, and if he dies, he will be allowed Paradise.
Sayyed Ibn Taaoos has also mentioned a lengthy supplicatory prayer to be said at the sight of the new moon of Moharram.
The First Day Of Moharram
Being the first day in the New Year, there are two acts that are advisably practiced on the first of Moharram:
First: It is recommended to observe fasting on this day. Rayyan ibn Shabeeb has reported that Imam al-Reza (a.s.) said, “Just as He responded to the prayer of Prophet Zakariyyah, Almighty Allah shall respond the prayer of one who observes fasting on this day and prays Him.”
Second: Imam al-Reza (a.s.) is reported to have said that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), on the first of Moharram, used to offer a two unit prayer. When he finished, he would raise his hands towards the heavens and repeat the following supplicatory prayer three times:

O Allah, You are the Eternal God, and this is a new year. I ask You during it for protection from the devil, strength over this soul that commands toward evil, and engagement in that which brings me closer to You, O Generous One! O Owner of Majesty and Honor! O Pillar of him who has no pillar! O Treasure of him who has no treasure! O Sanctuary of him who has no sanctuary! O Succor of him who has no succor! O Support of him who has no support! O Reserve of him who has no reserve! O Benevolent in testing! O Great Object of hope! O Might of the weak! O Rescuer of the drowning! O Savior of the perishing! O Bestower of blessings! O Beautifier! O Giver of bounty! O Benefactor! You are the One to Whom the darkness of the night prostrates, as does the light of the day, the illumination of the moon, the rays of the sun, the murmur of the water, and the rustling of the trees—O Allah, You have no partner. O Allah, make us better than what they think, forgive us what they do not know, and do not call us to account for what they say. Allah is sufficient for me; there is no god but He. In Him I have put my trust, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne. We believe in it; all is from our Lord, and none take heed except the people of understanding. Our Lord, do not cause our hearts to deviate after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from Yourself; indeed, You are the Bestower.
Shaykh al-Tusi says: It is recommended to observe fasting on the first nine days of Moharram. On the tenth of Moharram, it is recommended to abstain from eating and drinking up to afternoon. After that, one may eat a little of the soil of Imam al-Husayn (a.s.)’s tomb (turbat al-Husayn; soil taken from the area around the holy tomb of Imam al-Husayn (a.s.)).
Sayyed Ibn Taaoos has mentioned the merits of observing fasting during the whole month of Moharram adding that such a deed protects against committing any sin.
