Merits
This Surah was revealed in Madinah and it has 8 verses. It is narrated from Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) that whoever recites this Surah in his recommended prayers will not die as a result of an earthquake and will be saved from all the natural calamities.
The experience of death is made easy for the one who recites this Surah and he sees the light of Jannah as he is about to die. Then, seventy thousand angels accompany his soul to the heavens. Keeping this Surah in one’s possession is a safety from tyrant rulers.
Text and Translation
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful
اِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْاَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا ۙ(1)
EZAA ZULZELATIL ARZO ZILZAALAHAA.
When the earth is rocked with a terrible quake
وَاَخْرَجَتِ الْاَرْضُ اَثْقَالَهَا ۙ(2)
WA AKHRAJATIL ARZO ASQAALAHAA.
and discharges its burdens,
وَقَالَ الْاِنْسَانُ مَا لَهَا ۚ(3)
WA QAALAL INSAANO MAA LAHAA.
and man says, ‘What is the matter with her?’
يَوْمَئِذٍ تُحَدِّثُ اَخْبَارَهَا ۙ(4)
YAWMAEZIN TOHADDESO AKHBAARAHAA.
On that day she will relate her chronicles
بِاَنَّ رَبَّكَ اَوْحٰى لَهَا ؕ(5)
BE-ANNA RABBAKA AWHAA LAHAA.
for her Lord will have inspired her.
يَوْمَئِذٍ يَّصْدُرُ النَّاسُ اَشْتَاتًا ۙ لِّيُرَوْا اَعْمَالَهُمْؕ(6)
YAWMAEZIN-Y YASDORUN NAASO ASHTAATAL, LEYORAW A-A’MAALAHUM.
On that day, mankind will issue forth in various groups to be shown their deeds.
فَمَنْ يَّعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًا يَّرَهٗ ؕ(7)
FAMAN-Y YA’MAL MISQAALA ZAARATIN KHAYRAN-Y YARAH.
So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it,
وَمَنْ يَّعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ شَرًّا يَّرَهٗ(8)
WA MAN-Y YA’MAL MISQAALA ZARRATIN SHARRAN-Y YARAH.
and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.
