Surah al-Alaq (The Clot)

There are 19 verses in this Surah and it was revealed in Makkah. Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) said that whoever recites this Surah in the daytime or at night, and then passes away, he will be counted amongst the martyrs who died while fighting on the side of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.).

It is highly recommended to recite this Surah while travelling and it acts as a safety from accidents. If recited on a treasure, it remains safe.

Text and Translation

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-merciful, the All-compassionate

IQRAA BISME RABBEKAL LAZEE KHALAQ.

Read in the name of your Lord Who created.

KHALAQAL INSAANA MIN A’LAQ.

He created man from a clot.

IQRAA WA RABBOKAL AKRAMUL.

Read and your Lord is Most Honorable,

LAZEE A’LLAMA BIL-QALAME.

Who taught (to write) with the pen

A’LLAMAL INSAANA MAA LAM YA’LAM.

Taught man what he knew not.

KALLAA INNAL INSAANA LA-YATGHAA.

Nay! man is most surely inordinate,

AR RA-AAHUS TAGHNAA.

Because he sees himself free from want.

INNA ELAA RABBEKAR RUJ-A’A.

Surely to your Lord is the return.

A-RA-AYTAL LAZEE YANHAA.

Have you seen him who forbids

A’BDAN EZAA SALLAA.

A servant when he prays?

A-RA-AYTA IN KAANA A’LAL HODAA.

Have you considered if he were on the right way,

AW AMARA BIT-TAQWAA.

Or enjoined guarding (against evil)?

A-RA-AYTA IN KAZZABA WA TAWALLAA.

Have you considered if he gives the lie to the truth and turns (his) back?

ALAM YA’LAM BE-ANNAL LAAHA YARAA.

Does he not know that Allah does see?

KALLAA LA-IL LAM YANTAHE, LA-NASFA-A’M BIN-NAASEYATE.

Nay! if he desist not, We would certainly smite his forehead,

NAASEYATIN KAAZEBATIN KHAATE-ATAH.

A lying, sinful forehead.

FAL-YAD-O’ NAADEYAHU.

Then let him summon his council,

SA-NAD-U’Z ZABAANEYATAH.

We too would summon the braves of the army.

KALLAA, LAA TO-TE’HO WAS-JUD WAQ TARIB.

Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah).
