Merits
There are 19 verses in this Surah and it was revealed in Makkah. It is narrated that the reciter of this Surah will get the reward equal to ten times the number of letters in the divine books that were revealed to the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.) and Prophet Musa (a.s.). It is also said that in the hereafter, he will be told to enter Jannah through whichever door he pleases.
Imam Ali (a.s.) used to recite this Surah often in his compulsory prayers. Surah al-A’ala is also good for relieving ear pains and other ailments.
Text and Translation
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
In the Name of Allah, the All-merciful, the All-compassionate
سَبِّحِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ الْاَعْلَىۙ(1)
SABBEH ISME RABBEKAL A-A’LAL.
Glorify the name of thy Guardian-Lord Most High,
الَّذِىْ خَلَقَ فَسَوّٰى ۙ(2)
LAZEE KHALAQA FASAWWAA.
Who hath created, and further, given order and proportion;
وَالَّذِىْ قَدَّرَ فَهَدٰى ۙ(3)
WAL LAZEE QADDARA FA-HADAA.
Who hath ordained laws. And granted guidance;
وَالَّذِىْۤ اَخْرَجَ الْمَرْعٰى ۙ(4)
WAL LAZEE AKHRAJAL MAR-A’A.
And Who bringeth out the (green and luscious) pasture,
فَجَعَلَهٗ غُثَآءً اَحْوٰىؕ(5)
FA-JA-A’LAHU GHOSAAA-AN AHWAA.
And then doth make it (but) swarthy stubble.
سَنُقْرِئُكَ فَلَا تَنْسٰٓىۙ(6)
SANUQRE-OKA FALAA TANSAA.
By degrees shall We teach thee to declare (the Message), so thou shalt not forget,
اِلَّا مَا شَآءَ اللّٰهُؕ اِنَّهٗ يَعْلَمُ الْجَهْرَ وَمَا يَخْفٰىؕ(7)
ILLAA MAA SHAAA-AL LAAH, INNAHU YA’LAMUL JAHRA WA MAA KAKHFAA.
Except as Allah wills: For He knoweth what is manifest and what is hidden.
وَنُيَسِّرُكَ لِلْيُسْرٰى ۖۚ(8)
WA NOYASSEROKA LIL-YUSRAA.
And We will make it easy for thee (to follow) the simple (Path).
فَذَكِّرْ اِنْ نَّفَعَتِ الذِّكْرٰىؕ(9)
FA-ZAKKIR IN NAFA-A’TIZ ZIKRAA.
Therefore give admonition in case the admonition profits (the hearer).
سَيَذَّكَّرُ مَنْ يَّخْشٰىۙ(10)
SAYAZZAKKARO MAN-Y YAKHSHAA.
The admonition will be received by those who fear (Allah):
وَيَتَجَنَّبُهَا الْاَشْقَىۙ(11)
WA YATAJANNABOHAL ASQAL.
But it will be avoided by those most unfortunate ones,
الَّذِىْ يَصْلَى النَّارَ الْكُبْرٰىۚ(12)
LAZEE YASLAN NAARAL KUBRAA.
Who will enter the Great Fire,
ثُمَّ لَا يَمُوْتُ فِيْهَا وَلَا يَحْيٰىؕ(13)
SUMMA LAA YAMOOTO FEEHAA WA LAA YAHYAA.
In which they will then neither die nor live.
قَدْ اَفْلَحَ مَنْ تَزَكّٰىۙ(14)
QAD AFLAHA MAN TAZAKKAA.
But those will prosper who purify themselves,
وَذَكَرَ اسْمَ رَبِّهٖ فَصَلّٰى ؕ(15)
WA ZAKARAS MA RABBEHI FA-SALLAA.
And glorify the name of their Guardian-Lord, and (lift their hearts) in prayer.
بَلْ تُؤْثِرُوْنَ الْحَيٰوةَ الدُّنْيَاۖ(16)
BAL TOA-SEROONAL HAYAATAD DUNYAA.
Nay (behold), ye prefer the life of this world;
وَالْاٰخِرَةُ خَيْرٌ وَّ اَبْقٰىؕ(17)
WAL AAKHERATO KHAYRUNW WA ABQAA.
But the Hereafter is better and more enduring.
اِنَّ هٰذَا لَفِى الصُّحُفِ الْاُوْلٰىۙ(18)
INNA HAAZAA LAFIS SOHOFIL OOLAA.
And this is in the Books of the earliest (Revelation),
صُحُفِ اِبْرٰهِيْمَ وَمُوْسٰى(19)
SOHOFE IBRAAHEEMA WA MOOSAA.
The Books of Abraham and Moses.
