Surah al-Taariq (The Night-Comer)

This Surah has 17 verses and it is a ‘Makki’ Surah. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) has said that the reward for reciting this Surah is equivalent to ten times the number of heavenly bodies in space.

Imam Ja’far al-Sadiq (a.s.) has narrated that if Surah al-Taariq is recited in compulsory prayers, then the reciter is honoured by Allah (s.w.t.) and will get the opportunity of being with the Prophets (a.s.). Reciting this Surah over anything keeps it safe. If recited before taking medicine, then the medicine will be a sure cure. The water in which this Surah has been dissolved should be poured gently on a wound and it will heal with the Grace of Allah (s.w.t.).

Text and Translation

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-merciful, the All-compassionate

WAS SAMAAA-E WAT TAAREQE.

By the Sky and the Night-Visitant (therein);-

WA MAA ADRAAKA MAT-TAAREQUN.

And what will explain to thee what the Night-Visitant is?

NAJMUS SAAQEBO.

(It is) the Star of piercing brightness;-

IN KULLO NAFSIL LAMMAA A’LAYHAA HAAFEZ.

There is no soul but has a protector over it.

FAL-YANZORIL INSAANO MIMMA KHOLEQ.

Now let man but think from what he is created!

KHOLEQA MIM MAAA-IN DAAFEQIN-Y.

He is created from a drop emitted-

YAKHROJO MIM BAYNIS SULBE WAT TARAAA-EB.

Proceeding from between the backbone and the ribs:

INNAHU A’LAA RAJ-E’HI LA-QAADER.

Surely (Allah) is able to bring him back (to life)!

YAWMA TUBLAS SARAAA-ERO.

The Day that (all) things secret will be tested,

FAMAA LAHU MIN QUWWATINW WA LAA NAASER.

(Man) will have no power, and no helper.

WAS SAMAAA-E ZAATIR RAJ-E’.

By the Firmament which returns (in its round),

WAL ARZE ZAATIS SAD-E’.

And by the Earth which opens out (for the gushing of springs or the sprouting of vegetation),

INNAHU LA-QAWLUN FASLUNW.

Behold this is the Word that distinguishes (Good from Evil):

WA MAA HOWA BIL-HAZL.

It is not a thing for amusement.

INNAHUM YAKEEDOONA KAYDAANW.

As for them, they are but plotting a scheme,

WA AKEEDO KAYDAA.

And I am planning a scheme.

FA-MAH-HELIL KAAFEREENA AMHILHUM ROWAYDAA.

Therefore grant a delay to the Unbelievers: Give respite to them gently (for awhile).
