78: al-Nabaa النبإ

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُوْنَۚ‏(1)

A’MMA YATA-SAAA-ALOON.

What is it that they are questioning each other about?!

عَنِ النَّبَاِ الْعَظِيْمِۙ‏(2)

A’NIN NABA-IL A’ZEEMIL

[Is it] about the Great Tiding,

الَّذِىْ هُمْ فِيْهِ مُخْتَلِفُوْنَؕ‏(3)

LAZEE HUM FEEHE MUKHTALEFOON.

the one about which they differ?

كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُوْنَۙ‏(4)

KALLAA SA-YA’LAMOONA.

No indeed! Soon they will know!

ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُوْنَ‏(5)

SUMMA KALLAA SAYA’LAMOON.

No indeed! Soon they will know for once again!

اَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْاَرْضَ مِهٰدًا ۙ‏(6)

ALAM NAJ-A’LIL ARZA MEHAADANW.

Did We not make the earth a resting place?

وَّالْجِبَالَ اَوْتَادًا ۙ‏(7)

WAL JEBAALA AWTAADANW

and the mountains stakes?

وَّخَلَقْنٰكُمْ اَزْوَاجًا ۙ‏(8)

WA KHALAQNAAKUM AZWAAJANW.

and create you in pairs?

وَّجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا ۙ‏(9)

WA JA-A’LNAA NAWMAKUM SOBAATANW.

and make your sleep for rest?

وَّجَعَلْنَا الَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا ۙ‏(10)

WA JA-A’LNAL LAYLA LEBAASANW.

and make the night a covering?

وَّجَعَلْنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا‏(11)

WA JA-A’LNAN NAHAARA MA-A’ASHANW.

and make the day for livelihood?

وَّبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا ۙ‏(12)

WA BANAYNAA FAWQAKUM SAB-A’N SHEDAADANW.

and build above you the seven mighty heavens?

وَّ جَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَّهَّاجًا ۙ‏(13)

WA JA-A’LNAA SERAAJANW WAH-HAAJANW.

and make [the sun for] a radiant lamp?

وَّاَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرٰتِ مَآءً ثَجَّاجًا ۙ‏(14)

WA ANZALNAA MENAL MO’SERAATE MAAA-AN SAJJAAJAL.

and send down water pouring from the rain-clouds,

لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهٖ حَبًّا وَّنَبَاتًا ۙ‏(15)

LE-NUKHREJA BEHI HABBANW WA NABAATANW

that We may bring forth with it grains and plants,

وَّجَنّٰتٍ اَلْفَافًا ؕ‏(16)

WA JANNAATIN ALFAAFAA.

and luxuriant gardens?

اِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيْقَاتًا ۙ‏(17)

INNA YAWMAL FASLE KAANA MEEQAATANY.

Indeed the Day of Judgement is the tryst,

يَّوْمَ يُنْفَخُ فِى الصُّوْرِ فَتَاْتُوْنَ اَفْوَاجًا ۙ‏(18)

YAWMA TUNFAKHO FIS SOORE FA-TAATOONA AFWAAJANW.

the day the Trumpet will be blown, and you will come in groups,

وَّفُتِحَتِ السَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ اَبْوَابًا ۙ‏(19)

WA FOTEHATIS SAMAAA-O FA KAANAT ABWAABANW.

and the sky will be opened and become gates,

وَّ سُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا ؕ‏(20)

WA SUYYERATIL JEBAALO FA KAANAT SARAABAA.

and the mountains will be set moving and become a mirage.

اِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا ۙ‏(21)

INNA JAHANNAMA KAANAT MIRSAADAL.

Indeed hell is in ambush,

لِّلطّٰغِيْنَ مَاٰبًا ۙ‏(22)

LIT-TAAGHEENA MA-AABAL.

a resort for the rebels,

لّٰبِثِيْنَ فِيْهَاۤ اَحْقَابًا ۚ‏(23)

LAABESEENA FEEHAA AHQAABAA.

to reside therein for ages,

لَا يَذُوْقُوْنَ فِيْهَا بَرْدًا وَّلَا شَرَابًا ۙ‏(24)

LAA YAZOOQOONA FEEHAA BARDANW WA LAA SHARAABAA.

tasting in it neither any coolness nor drink,

اِلَّا حَمِيْمًا وَّغَسَّاقًا ۙ‏(25)

ILLAA HAMEEMANW WA GHASSAAQAA.

except boiling water and pus,

جَزَآءً وِّفَاقًا ؕ‏(26)

JA-ZAAA-ANW WEFAAQAA.

a fitting requital.

اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا لَا يَرْجُوْنَ حِسَابًا ۙ‏(27)

INNAHUM KAANOO LAA YARJOONA HESAABANW.

Indeed they did not expect any reckoning,

وَّكَذَّبُوْا بِاٰيٰتِنَا كِذَّابًا ؕ‏(28)

WA KAZZABOO BE-AAYAATENAA KIZZAABAA.

and they denied Our signs mendaciously,

وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ اَحْصَيْنٰهُ كِتٰبًا ۙ‏(29)

WA KULLA SHAY-IN AHSAYNAAHO KETAABAA.

and We have figured everything in a Book.

فَذُوْقُوْا فَلَنْ نَّزِيْدَكُمْ اِلَّا عَذَابًا‏(30)

FA-ZOOQOO FALAN NAZEEDAKUM ILLAA A’ZAABAA.

So [now] taste! We shall increase you in nothing but punishment!

اِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِيْنَ مَفَازًا ۙ‏(31)

INNA LIL MUTTAQEENA MAFAAZAA.

Indeed a triumph awaits the Godwary:

حَدَآئِقَ وَاَعْنَابًا ۙ‏(32)

HADAAA-EQA WA A-A’NAABANW

gardens and vineyards,

وَّكَوَاعِبَ اَتْرَابًا ۙ‏(33)

WA KAWAA-E’BA ATRAABANW.

and buxom maidens of a like age,

وَّكَاْسًا دِهَاقًا ؕ‏(34)

WA KAASAN DEHAAQAA.

and brimming cups.

لَا يَسْمَعُوْنَ فِيْهَا لَغْوًا وَّلَا كِذّٰبًا ۚ‏(35)

LAA YAS-MA-O’ONA FEEHAA LAGHWANW WA LAA KIZZAABAA.

Therein they shall hear neither vain talk nor lies

جَزَآءً مِّنْ رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًا ۙ‏(36)

JA-ZAAA-AM MIR RABBEKA A’TAAA-AN HESAABAR.

—a reward and a sufficing bounty from your Lord,

رَّبِّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الرَّحْمٰنِ لَا يَمْلِكُوْنَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا ۚ‏(37)

RABBIS SAMAAWAATE WAL ARZE WA MAA BAYNAHOMAR RAHMAANE LAA YAMLEKOONA MINHO KHETAABAA.

the All-beneficent, the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. They will not be able to address Him

يَوْمَ يَقُوْمُ الرُّوْحُ وَالْمَلٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّا ؕۙ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُوْنَ اِلَّا مَنْ اَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا‏(38)

YAWMA YAQOOMUR ROOHO WAL MALAAA-EKATO SAFFAL, LAA YATAKALLAMOONA ILLAA MAN AZENA LAHUR RAHMAANO WA QAALA SAWAABAA.

on the day when the Spirit and the angels stand in an array: none shall speak except someone who is permitted by the All-beneficent and says what is rightful.

ذٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ ۚ فَمَنْ شَآءَ اتَّخَذَ اِلٰى رَبِّهٖ مَاٰبًا‏(39)

ZAALEKAL YAWMUL HAQQ, FAMAN SHAAA-AT TAKHAZA ELAA RABBEHI MA-AABAA.

That day is true for certain. So let anyone who wishes take resort with his Lord.

اِنَّاۤ اَنْذَرْنٰكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيْبًا ۖۚ يَّوْمَ يَنْظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدٰهُ وَيَقُوْلُ الْكٰفِرُ يٰلَيْتَنِىْ كُنْتُ تُرٰبًا‏(40)

INNAA ANZARNAAKUM A’ZAABAN QAREEBAN-Y, YAWMA YANZORUL MAR-O MAA QADDAMAT YADAAHO WA YAQOOLUL KAAFERO YAA LAYTANEE KUNTO TORAABAA.

Indeed We have warned you of a punishment near at hand—the day when a person will observe what his hands have sent ahead and the faithless one will say, ‘I wish I were dust!’
