62: al-Jomoa'h الجمعة

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

يُسَبِّحُ لِلّٰهِ مَا فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَمَا فِى الْاَرْضِ الْمَلِكِ الْقُدُّوْسِ الْعَزِيْزِ الْحَكِيْمِ‏(1)

YOSABBEHO LILLAAHE MAA FIS SAMAAWAATE WA MAA FIL ARZIL MALEKIL QUDDOOSIL A’ZEEZIL HAKEEM.

Whatever there is in the heavens and in the earth glorifies Allah, the Sovereign, the All-holy, the All-mighty, the All-wise.

هُوَ الَّذِىْ بَعَثَ فِى الْاُمِّيّٖنَ رَسُوْلًا مِّنْهُمْ يَتْلُوْا عَلَيْهِمْ اٰيٰتِهٖ وَيُزَكِّيْهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتٰبَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَاِنْ كَانُوْا مِنْ قَبْلُ لَفِىْ ضَلٰلٍ مُّبِيْنٍۙ‏(2)

HOWAL LAZEE BA-A’SA FIL UMMIYYEENA RASOOLAM MINHUM YATLOO A’LAYHIM AAYAATEHI WA YOZAKKEEHIM WA YO-A’LLEMOHOMUL KETAABA WAL HIKMATA, WA IN KAANOO MIN QABLO LAFEE ZALAALIM MOBEEN.

It is He who sent to the unlettered [people] an apostle from among themselves, to recite to them His signs, to purify them, and to teach them the Book and wisdom, and earlier they had indeed been in manifest error.

وَّاٰخَرِيْنَ مِنْهُمْ لَمَّا يَلْحَقُوْا بِهِمْ‌ؕ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيْزُ الْحَكِيْمُ‏(3)

WA AAKHAREENA MINHUM LAMMAA YALHAQOO BEHIM, WA HOWAL A’ZEEZUL HAKEEM.

And to others from among them [as well] who have not yet joined them. And He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.

ذٰ لِكَ فَضْلُ اللّٰهِ يُؤْتِيْهِ مَنْ يَّشَآءُ‌ ؕ وَاللّٰهُ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيْمِ‏(4)

ZAALEKA FAZLUL LAAHE YOA-TEEHE MANY YASHAAA-O, WAL LAAHO ZUL FAZLIL A’ZEEM.

That is Allah’s grace, which He grants to whomever He wishes, and Allah is dispenser of a great grace.

مَثَلُ الَّذِيْنَ حُمِّلُوا التَّوْرٰٮةَ ثُمَّ لَمْ يَحْمِلُوْهَا كَمَثَلِ الْحِمَارِ يَحْمِلُ اَسْفَارًا‌ ؕ بِئْسَ مَثَلُ الْقَوْمِ الَّذِيْنَ كَذَّبُوْا بِاٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ ‌ؕ وَاللّٰهُ لَا يَهْدِى الْقَوْمَ الظّٰلِمِيْنَ‏(5)

MASALUL LAZEENA HUMMELUT TAWRAATA SUMMA LAM YAHMELOOHAA KAMASALIL HEMAARE YAHMELO ASFAARAA, BEA-SA MASALUL QAWMIL LAZEENA KAZZABOO BE AAYAATIL LAAH, WAL LAAHO LAA YAHDIL QAWMAZ ZAALEMEEN.

The example of those who were charged with the Torah, then failed to carry it, is that of an ass carrying books. Evil is the example of the people who deny Allah’s signs, and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.

قُلْ يٰۤاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ هَادُوْۤا اِنْ زَعَمْتُمْ اَنَّكُمْ اَوْلِيَآءُ لِلّٰهِ مِنْ دُوْنِ النَّاسِ فَتَمَنَّوُا الْمَوْتَ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ صٰدِقِيْنَ‏(6)

QUL YAA-AYYOHAL LAZEENA HAADOO IN ZA-A’MTUM ANNAKUM ANNAKUM AWLEYAAA-O LILLAAHE MIN DOONIN NAASE FATAMANNAWUL MAWTA IN KUNTUM SAADEQEEN.

Say, ‘O Jews! If you claim that you are Allah’s favourites, to the exclusion of other people, then long for death, should you be truthful.’

وَلَا يَتَمَنَّوْنَهٗۤ اَبَدًۢا بِمَا قَدَّمَتْ اَيْدِيْهِمْ‌ؕ وَاللّٰهُ عَلِيْمٌۢ بِالظّٰلِمِيْنَ‏(7)

WA LAA YATAMANNAW-NAHU ABADAM BEMAA QADDAMAT AYDEEHIM, WAL LAAHO A’LEEMUM BIZ-ZAALEMEEN.

Yet they will never long for it, because of what their hands have sent ahead, and Allah knows best the wrongdoers.

قُلْ اِنَّ الْمَوْتَ الَّذِىْ تَفِرُّوْنَ مِنْهُ فَاِنَّهٗ مُلٰقِيْكُمْ‌ ثُمَّ تُرَدُّوْنَ اِلٰى عٰلِمِ الْغَيْبِ وَالشَّهَادَةِ فَيُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَ‏(8)

QUL INNAL MAWTAL LAZEE TAFIRROONA MINHO FA-INNAHU MOLAAQEEKUM SUMMA TORADDOONA ELAA A’ALEMIL GHAYBE WASH-SHAHAADATE FAYONABBEOKUM BEMAA KUNTUM TA’MALOON.

Say, ‘The death that you flee will indeed encounter you. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the sensible and the Unseen, and He will inform you about what you used to do.’

يٰۤاَيُّهَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْۤا اِذَا نُوْدِىَ لِلصَّلٰوةِ مِنْ يَّوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَاسْعَوْا اِلٰى ذِكْرِ اللّٰهِ وَذَرُوا الْبَيْعَ‌ ؕ ذٰ لِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُوْنَ‏(9)

YAA AYYOHAL LAZEENA AAMANOO EZAA NOODEYA LIS SALAATE MINY YAWMIL JOMO-A’TE FAS-A’W ELAA ZIKRIL LAAHE WA ZARUL BAY’, ZAALEKUM KHAYRUL LAKUM IN KUNTUM TA’LAMOON.

O you who have faith! When the call is made for prayer on Friday, hurry toward the remembrance of Allah, and leave all business. That is better for you, should you know.

فَاِذَا قُضِيَتِ الصَّلٰوةُ فَانْتَشِرُوْا فِى الْاَرْضِ وَابْتَغُوْا مِنْ فَضْلِ اللّٰهِ وَاذْكُرُوا اللّٰهَ كَثِيْرًا لَّعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُوْنَ‏(10)

FA-EZAA QOZEYATIS SALAATO FANTASHEROO FIL ARZE WABTAGHOO MIN FAZLIL LAAHE WAZKORUL LAAHA KASEERAL LA-A’LLAKUM TUFLEHOON.

And when the prayer is finished disperse through the land and seek Allah’s grace, and remember Allah much so that you may be felicitous.

وَاِذَا رَاَوْا تِجَارَةً اَوْ لَهْوَا۟ اۨنْفَضُّوْۤا اِلَيْهَا وَتَرَكُوْكَ قَآئِمًا‌ ؕ قُلْ مَا عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ اللَّهْوِ وَمِنَ التِّجَارَةِ‌ ؕ وَاللّٰهُ خَيْرُ الرّٰزِقِيْنَ‏(11)

WA EZAA RA-AW TEJAARATAN AW LAHWAA NINFAZZOO ELAYHAA WA TARAKOOKA QAAA-EMAA, QUL MAA I’NDAL LAAHE KHAYRUM MENAL LAHWE WA MENAT TEJAARAH, WAL LAAHO KHAYRUR RAAZEQEEN.

When they sight a deal or a diversion, they scatter off towards it and leave you standing! Say, ‘What is with Allah is better than diversion and dealing, and Allah is the best of providers.’
