Merits

This Surah is ‘Makki’ and it has 83 verses. It is written in the commentary of Majma’ul Bayan whoever recites Surah Ya Sin solely for seeking the pleasure of Allah (s.w.t.), all his sins will be forgiven and he will be given the reward equal to the reward of reciting the whole Qur’an 12 times. If this Surah is recited near a person on his deathbed, then for each letter recited, 12 angels are sent to pray for his forgiveness and they remain even when the soul is being taken by the Angel of Death. The angels also take part in his funeral rites.

If recited near a person who is in Sakarat-ul-Mawt (on the verge of passing away), then an angel brings a drink for the dying person from Jannah and as he drinks of it, he feels greatly eased. In another narration, this Surah has been described as the key to all good in this life and in the hereafter and a safety from all evil in this life and in the hereafter. Needs are fulfilled if asked after the recitation of this Surah and the reward for its recitation is also compared to performing twenty hajj pilgrimages.

Drinking the water in which this Surah has been dissolved cures one of a thousand types of illnesses. The Holy Prophet (S) said that everything has its heart and the heart of the Holy Qur’an is Surah Ya Sin. He (s.a.w.a.) also said that if this Surah is recited in a graveyard then all punishment is lifted, for that day, from all the graves and the reciter gets the reward equal to the sum of all the good actions performed by all those who are buried in that graveyard.

It is narrated from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) that whoever recited this Surah in the morning will be protected from all calamities and problems during the day and whoever recites it at night will be protected from Shaitan by seventy thousand angels. Recitation of this Surah saves one from the squeezing of the grave and its other torments. Passing the difficult stages in the hereafter will also be made easy for him.

The sixth Imam (a.s.) also said that drinking this Surah after writing it in a mixture of rose water and saffron for seven days (it has to be written once for each day) makes a person have such a good memory that he will never forget what he hears. He will win debates and will gain great respect and status. If given to a woman, her breast-milk will increase.

Keeping this Surah in one’s possession as a talisman acts as a protection from the jealousy of people. The wearer remains safe from the evil designs of men and Jinn. It also acts as a cure from disease.

LE-TUNZERA QAWMAM MAA UNZERA AABAA-OHUM FAHUM GHAAFELUN.

That you may warn a people whose fathers were not warned, so they are heedless.

LAQAD HAQQAL QAWLO A’LAA AKSAREHIM FAHUM LAA YOAMENOON.

Certainly the word has proved true of most of them, so they do not believe.

INNAA JA-A’LNAA FEE A-A’NAAQEHIM AGHLAALAN FAHEYA ELAL AZQAANE FAHUM MUQMAHOON.

Surely We have placed chains on their necks, and these reach up to their chins, so they have their heads raised aloft.

WA SAWAAA-UN A’LAYHIM A-ANZARTAHUM AM LAM TUNZIRHUM LAA YOAMENUN.

And it is alike to them whether you warn them or warn them not: they do not believe.

INNAMAA TUNZERO MANIT-TABA-A’Z ZIKRA WA KHASEYAR RAHMAANA BIL-GHAYBE FA-BASH-SHIRHO BE MAGHFERATINW WA AJRIN KAREEM.

You can only warn him who follows the reminder and fears the Beneficent Allah in secret; so announce to him forgiveness and an honorable reward.

INNAA NAHNO NOHYIL MAWTAA WA NAKTOBO MAA QADDAMOO WA AASAARAHUM, WA KULLA SHAY-IN AHSAYNAAHO FEE EMAAMIM MOBEEN.

Surely We give life to the dead, and We write down what they have sent before and their footprints, and We have recorded everything in a clear writing.

WAZ RIB LAHUM MASALAN ASHAABAL QARYATE, IZ-JAA-A-HAL MURSALOON.

And set out to them an example of the people of the town, when the apostles came to it.

IZ ARSALNAA ELAYHEMUS NAYNE FA-KAZZABOOHOMAA FA-A’ZZAZNAA BE SAALESIN FA-QAALOO INNAA ELAYKUM MURSALOONA.

When We sent to them two, they rejected both of them, then We strengthened (them) with a third, so they said: Surely we are apostles to you.

QAALOO MAA ANTUM ILLAA BASHARUM MISLONAA, WA MAA ANZALAR RAHMAANO MIN SHAY-IN IN ANTUM ILLAA TAKZEBOON.

They said: You are naught but mortals like ourselves, nor has the Beneficent Allah revealed anything; you only lie.

QAALOO RABBONAA YA’LAMO INNA ELAYKUM LA-MURSALOON.

They said: Our Lord knows that we are most surely apostles to you.

WA MAA A’LAYNAA ILLAL BALAAGHUL MOBEEN.

And nothing devolves on us but a clear deliverance (of the message).

QAALOO INNAA TATAYYARNAA BEKUM, LA-IL-LAM TANTAHOO LA-NAR- JOMANNAKUM WA LAYAMASSANNAKUM MINNAA A’ZAABUN ALEEM.

They said: Surely we augur evil from you; if you do not desist, we will certainly stone you, and there shall certainly afflict vou a painful chastisement from us.

QAALOO TAAA-EROKUM MA-A’KUM, A-IN ZUKKIRTUM, BAL ANTUM QAWMUM MUSREFOON.

They said: Your evil fortune is with you; what! if you are reminded! Nay, you are an extravagant people.

WA JAA-A MIN AQSAL MADEENATE RAJOLUN-Y YAS-A’A QAALA YAA-QAWMIT TABE-U’L MURSALEENAT.

And from the remote part of the city there came a man running, he said: O my people! follow the apostles;

TABEOO’ MAL LAA YAS-ALOKUM AJRANW WA HUM MOHTADOON.

Follow him who does not ask you for reward, and they are the followers of the right course;

WA MAA LEYA LAA A-A’BODUL LAZEE FATARANEE WA ELAYHE TURJA-O’ON.

And what reason have I that I should not serve Him Who brought me into existence? And to Him you shall be brought back;

A-AT-TAKHEZO MIN DOONEHI AALEHATAN INY-YORIDNIR RAHMAANO BE-ZURRIL LAA TUGHNE A’NNEE SHAFAA-A’TOHUM SHAY-ANW WA LAA YUNQEZOON.

What! shall I take besides Him gods whose intercession, If the Beneficent Allah should desire to afflict me with a harm, shall not avail me aught, nor shall they be able to deliver me?

INNEE EZAL LAFEE ZALAALIM MOBEEN.

In that case I shall most surely be in clear error:

INNEE AAMANTO BE-RABBEKUM FAS-MA-O’ON.

Surely I believe in your Lord, therefore hear me.
