Merits
This Surah was revealed in Makkah and it has 7 verses. It is narrated from Imam Muhammad al-Baqir (a.s.) that if a person recites this Surah in any of his prayers, then they will be accepted.
The sins of those who recite this Surah are forgiven. If recited a hundred times after the Fajr prayers, one remains safe until the next day’s Fajr time. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) said that if a person recites Surah al-Maao’on fourty-one times every day, he and his family will remain free from being dependent on others for their sustenance. (It is recommended that salawaat should also be recited after the first and last ten times)
Text and Translation
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
In the Name of Allah, the All-merciful, the All-compassionate
اَرَءَيْتَ الَّذِىْ يُكَذِّبُ بِالدِّيْنِؕ(1)
ARA-AYTAL LAZEE YOKAZZEBO BID-DEEN.
Have you considered him who calls the judgment a lie?
فَذٰلِكَ الَّذِىْ يَدُعُّ الْيَتِيْمَۙ(2)
FA-ZAALEKAL LAZEE YADOA’-U’L YATEEMA.
That is the one who treats the orphan with harshness,
وَ لَا يَحُضُّ عَلٰى طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِيْنِؕ(3)
WA LAA YAHUZZO A’LAA TA-A’AMIL MISKEEN.
And does not urge (others) to feed the poor.
فَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُصَلِّيْنَۙ(4)
FA-WAYLUL LIL-MOSALLEENAL.
So woe to the praying ones,
الَّذِيْنَ هُمْ عَنْ صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُوْنَۙ(5)
LAZEENA HUM A’N SALAATEHIM SAAHOONAL.
Who are unmindful of their prayers,
الَّذِيْنَ هُمْ يُرَآءُوْنَۙ(6)
LAZEENA HUM YORAAA-OONA.
Who do (good) to be seen,
وَيَمْنَعُوْنَ الْمَاعُوْنَ(7)
WA YAMNA-O’ONAL MAA-O’ON.
And withhold the necessaries of life.
