Merits
Surah al-Homazah (The Slanderer)
This Surah was revealed in Makkah and it has 9 verses. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) said that the reward for reciting this Surah can be compared to ten times the number of disbelievers who were present in Makkah.
Reciting Surah al-Homazah in compulsory prayers keeps a person safe from poverty. Sustenance comes towards him. His death will not be of a sudden and terrifying nature. This Surah is also a cure for pain in the eyes and should be recited before blowing gently into the eyes for relief from pain. Keeping this Surah in a talisman around one’s neck acts as a protection from the ‘evil eye’.
Text and Translation
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
In the Name of Allah, the All-merciful, the All-compassionate
وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةِ ۙ(1)
WAYLUL LEKULLE HOMAZATIL LOMAZATE. NIL
Woe to every slanderer, defamer,
اۨلَّذِىْ جَمَعَ مَالًا وَّعَدَّدَهٗ ۙ(2)
LAZEE JAMA-A’ MAALAWN WA A’DDADAHU.
Who amasses wealth and considers it a provision (against mishap);
يَحْسَبُ اَنَّ مَالَهٗۤ اَخْلَدَهٗ ۚ(3)
YAHSABO ANNA MAALAHU AKHLADAH.
He thinks that his wealth will make him immortal.
كَلَّا لَيُنْۢبَذَنَّ فِى الْحُطَمَةِ ۖ(4)
KALLAA LAYUMBAZANNA FIL HOTAMATE.
Nay! he shall most certainly be hurled into the crushing disaster,
وَمَاۤ اَدْرٰٮكَ مَا الْحُطَمَةُ ؕ(5)
WA MAA ADRAAKA MAL-HOTAMAH.
And what will make you realize what the crushing disaster is?
نَارُ اللّٰهِ الْمُوْقَدَةُ ۙ(6)
NAARUL LAAHIL MOOQADAUL.
It is the fire kindled by Allah,
الَّتِىْ تَطَّلِعُ عَلَى الْاَفْئِدَةِ ؕ(7)
LATEE TAT-TA-LE-O’ A’LAL AF-EDAH.
Which rises above the hearts.
اِنَّهَا عَلَيْهِمْ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ ۙ(8)
INNAHAA A’LAYHIM MOOSADATUN.
Surely it shall be closed over upon them,
فِىْ عَمَدٍ مُّمَدَّدَةٍ(9)
FEE A’MADIM MOMADDADAH.
