Ziyarah on the day of Arbaeen; The Twentieth of Safar

Text and Translation

Two forms of ziyarah on the Arbaeen Day have been mentioned in traditions:

FIRST FORM OF ZIYARAH ON THE ARBAEEN DAY

The first has been reported by Shaykh al-Tusi, in Tahzeeb al-Ahkam and Misbah al-Mutahajjid, from Safwan al-Jammaal who said: My master al-Sadiq, Allah’s blessings be upon him, instructed me to visit Imam al-Husayn (a.s.) on the Arbaeen Day, advisably in the early forenoon, and to say the following words:

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰی وَلِیِّ اللّٰهِ وَ حَبِیْبِہٖ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA WALIYYIL LAAHE WA HABEEBEHI

Peace be upon the Representative of Allah and His beloved;

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰی خَلِیْلِ اللّٰهِ وَ نَجِیْبِہٖ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA KHALEELIL LAAHE WA NAJEEBEHI

peace be upon the Intimate Friend of Allah and His distinguished one;

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰی صَفِیِّ اللّٰهِ وَ ابْنِ صَفِیِّہٖ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA SAFIYYIL LAAHE WABNE SAFIYYEHI

peace be upon the Chosen One of Allah and the son of His chosen one.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَی الْحُسَیْنِ الْمَظْلُوْمِ الشَّھِیْدِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAL HUSAYNIL MAZLOOMISH SHAHEEDE

Peace be upon Husain, the oppressed, the martyr.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلٰی اَسِیْرِ الْكُرُبَاتِ وَ قَتِیْلِ الْعَبَرَاتِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAA ASEERIL KOROBAATE WA QATEELIL A’BARAATE

Peace be upon the prisoner of sorrows and the one slain for whose sake tears are shed.

اَللّٰھُمَّ اِنِّیْٓ اَشْھَدُ اَنَّہٗ وَلِیُّكَ وَ ابْنُ وَلِیِّكَ

ALLAAHUMMA INNEE ASH-HADO ANNAHU WALIYYOKA WABNO WALIYYEKA

O Allah, I bear witness that he is Your Representative and the son of Your Representative,

وَ صَفِیُّكَ وَ ابْنُ صَفِیِّكَ الْفَآئِزُ بِكَرَامَتِكَ

WA SAFIYYOKA WABNO SAFIYYEKAL FAAA-EZO BE-KARAAMATEKA

Your chosen one and the son of Your chosen one, the winner of Your honor.

اَکْرَمْتَہٗ بِالشَّھَادَۃِ وَ حَبَوْتَہٗ بِالسَّعَادَۃِ

AKRAMTAHU BISH SHAHAADATE WA HABAWTAHU BIS SA-A’ADATE

You honored him with martyrdom, gifted him with happiness,

وَ اجْتَبَیْتَہٗ بِطِیْبِ الْوِلاَدَۃِ وَجَعَلْتَہٗ سَیِّدًا مِّنَ السَّادَۃِ

WAJ TABAYTAHU BE-TEEBIL WELAADATE WA JA-A’LTAHU SAYYEDAN MENAS SAADATE

distinguished him with a pure birth, and made him a master among masters,

وَ قَآئِدًا مِّنَ الْقَادَۃِ وَ ذَائِدًا مِّنَ الذَّادَۃِ

WA QAAA-EDAN MENAL QAADATE WA ZAAA-EDAN MINAZ ZAADATE

a leader among leaders, and a defender among defenders.

وَ اَعْطَیْتَہٗ مَوَارِیْثَ الْاَنْبِیْآءِ وَ جَعَلْتَہٗ حُجَّۃً عَلٰی خَلْقِكَ مِنَ الْاَوْصِیَآءِ

WA AA’-TAYTAHU MAWAAREESAL AMBEYAAA-E WA JA-A’LTAHU HUJJATAN A’LAA KHALQEKA MENAL AWSEYAAA-E

You granted him the inheritances of the Prophets and made him a Proof over Your creation from among the Successors.

فَاعْذَرَ فِیْ الدُّعَآءِ وَ مَنَحَ النُّصْحَ وَ بَذَلَ مُھْجَتَہٗ فِیْكَ

FA-AA’-ZARA FID DO-AAA-E WA MANAHAN NUSHA WA BAZALA MOHJATAHU FEEKA

So he removed all excuses in his calling (towards You), provided sincere advice, and sacrificed his lifeblood for Your sake

لِیَسْتَنْقِذَ عِبَادَكَ مِنَ الْجَھَالَۃِ وَ حَیْرَۃِ الضَّلاَ لَۃِ

LE-YASTANQEZA E’BAADEKA MENAL JAHAALATE WA HAYRATIZ ZALAALATE

to rescue Your servants from ignorance and the bewilderment of misguidance.

وَ قَدْ تَوَازَرَ عَلَیْهِ مَنْ غَرَّتْهُ الدُّنْیَا

WA QAD TAWAAZARA A’LAYHE MAN GHARRAT-HUD DUNYAA

Indeed, those whom the world had deceived leagued together against him;

وَ بَاعَ حَظَّہٗ بِالْاَرْذَلِ الْاَدْنٰی

WA BAA-A’ HAZZAHU BIL-ARZALIL ADNAA

they sold their share for the meanest price

وَ شَرٰی اٰخِرَتَہٗ بِالثَّمَنِ الْاَوْكَسِ وَ تَغْطَرَسَ

WA SHARAA AAKHERATAHU BIS-SAMANIL AWKASE WA TA-GHAT-RASA

and traded their Hereafter for the lowest value. They acted arrogantly,

وَ تَرَدّٰی فِیْ ھَوَاهُ وَ اَسْخَطَكَ وَ اَسْخَطَ نَبِیِّكَ

WA TARADDAA FEE HAWAAHO WA ASKHATAKA WA ASKHATA NABIYYAKA

perished in their desires, provoked Your anger and the anger of Your Prophet,

وَ اَطَاعَ مِنْ عِبَادِكَ اَھْلَ الشِّقَاقِ وَ النِّفَاقِ

WA ATAA-A’ MIN E’BAADEKA AHLASH SHEQAAQE WAN NEFAAQE

and obeyed from among Your servants the people of discord and hypocrisy—

وَ حَمَلَۃَ الْاَوْزَارِ الْمُسْتَوْجِبِیْنَ النَّارَ فَجَاھَدَھُمْ فِیْكَ

WA HAMALATAL AWZAARIL MUSTAWJEBEENAN NAARA FA-JAAHADAHUM FEEKA

those who carry the burden of sins and deserve the Fire. So he fought them for Your sake,

صَابِرًا مُّحْتَسِبًا حَتّٰی سُفِكَ فِیْ طَاعَتِكَ دَمُہٗ

SAABERAN MOHTASEBAN HATTAA SOFEKA FEE TAA-A’TEKA DAMOHU

patient and seeking reward, until his blood was spilled in obedience to You

وَ اسْتُبِیْحَ حَرِیْمُہٗ

WASTOBEEHA HAREEMOHU

and his sanctity was violated.

اَللّٰهُمَّ فَالْعَنْهُمْ لَعْنًا وَبِیْلًا وَّ عَذِّبْهُمْ عَذَابًا اَلِیْمًا

ALLAAHUMMA FAL-A’NHUM LA’-NAN WABEELAN WA A’ZZIBHUM A’ZAABAN ALEEMAN

O Allah, curse them with a heavy curse and punish them with a painful punishment.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ رَسُوْلِ اللّٰهِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA RASOOLIL LAAHE

Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah.

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْكَ یَابْنَ سَیِّدِ الْاَوْصِیَآءِ

ASSALAAMO A’LAYKA YABNA SAYYEDIL AWSEYAAA-E

Peace be upon you, O son of the Chief of the Successors.

اَشْهَدُ اَنَّكَ اَمِیْنُ اللّٰهِ وَ ابْنُ اَمِیْنِہٖ

ASH-HADO ANNAKA AMEENUL LAAHE WABNO AMEENEHI

I bear witness that you are the trustee of Allah and the son of His trustee;

عِشْتَ سَعِیْدًا وَ مَضَیْتَ حَمِیْدًا

I’SHTA SA-E’EDAN WA MAZAYTA HAMEEDAN
