Hirz-e-Imam Zainul Aabedeen (a.s.)

Text and Translation

This evil-repelling prayer is ascribed to Imam Ali ibn al-Husayn Zayn al-Aabedin (a.s.):

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ وَ بِاللّٰهِ سَدَدْتُ اَفْوَاهَ الْجِنِّ وَ الْاِنْسِ

BISMIL LAAHE WA BILAAHE SADADTO AFWAAHAL JINNE WAL INSE

In the Name of Allah, and by Allah, I have sealed the mouths of the jinn, mankind,

وَ الشَّيَاطِيْنِ وَ السَّحَرَةِ وَ الْاَبَالِسَةِ مِنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِ

WASH SHAYAATEENE WAS SAHARATE WAL ABAALESATE MENAL JINNE WAL INSE

the devils, the sorcerers, the demons from among the jinn and mankind,

وَ السَّلَاطِيْنِ وَ مَنْ يَلُوْذُ بِهِمْ بِاللّٰهِ الْعَزِيْزِ الْاَعَزِّ

WAS SALAATEENE WA MAN YALOOZO BEHIM BILLAAHIL A’ZEEZIL A’AZZE

the rulers, and whoever seeks refuge with them—by Allah, the Almighty, the Most Mighty,

وَ بِاللّٰهِ الْكَبِيْرِ الْاَكْبَرِ

WA BILLAAHIL KABEERIL AKBARE

and by Allah, the Great, the Greatest.

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الظَّاهِرِ الْبَاطِنِ الْمَكْنُوْنِ الْمَخْزُوْنِ

BISMIL LAAHIZ ZAAHERIL BAATENIL MAKNOONIL MAKHZOONIL

In the Name of Allah, the Manifest, the Hidden, the Concealed, the Treasured,

الَّذِىْۤ اَقَامَ بِهِ السَّمٰوَاتِ وَالْاَرْضَ

LAZEE AQAAMA BEHIS SAMAAWAATE WAL ARZA

by means of which He established the heavens and the earth,

ثُمَّ اسْتَوٰى عَلَى الْعَرْشِ

SUMMAS TAWAA A’LAL A’RSHE

then established Himself upon the Throne.

بِسْمِ اللّٰهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah; the All-beneficent, the All-merciful.

وَ وَقَعَ الْقَوْلُ عَلَيْهِمْ بِمَا ظَلَمُوْا فَهُمْ لَا يَنْطِقُوْنَ

WA WAQA-A’L QAWLO A’LAYHIM BEMAA ZALAMOO FAHUM LAA YANTEQOON

And the word shall come to pass against them because they were unjust, so they shall not speak

قَالَ اخْسَؤُا فِيْهَا وَ لَا تُكَلِّمُوْنَ

QAALAKHSA-OO FEEHAA WA LAA TOKALLEMOON

He shall say: Go away into it and speak not to Me;

وَ عَنَتِ الْوُجُوْهُ لِلْحَىِّ الْقَيُّوْمِ

WA A’NATIL WOJOOHO LIL HAYYIL QAYYOOME

And the faces shall be humbled before the Living, the Self-subsistent Allah,

وَ قَدْ خَابَ مَنْ حَمَلَ ظُلْمًا

WA QAD KHAABA MAN HAMALA ZULMAW

and he who bears iniquity is indeed a failure.

وَّ خَشَعَتِ الْاَصْوَاتُ لِلرَّحْمٰنِ

WA KHASHA-A’TIL ASWAATO LIRRAHMAANE

and the voices shall be low before the Beneficent Allah

فَلَا تَسْمَعُ اِلَّا هَمْسًا

FALAA TASMA-O’ ILLAA HAMSAA

so that you shall not hear aught but a soft sound.

وَ جَعَلْنَا عَلٰى قُلُوْبِهِمْ اَكِنَّةً اَنْ يَّفْقَهُوْهُ وَ فِىْ اٰذَانِهِمْ وَقْرًا

WA JA-A’LNAA A’LAA QOLOOBEHIM AKINNATAN ANY YAFQAHOOHO WA FEE AAZAANEHIM WAQRAN

And We have placed coverings on their hearts and a heaviness in their ears lest they understand it,

وَ اِذَا ذَكَرْتَ رَبَّكَ فِى الْقُرْاٰنِ وَحْدَهٗ وَلَّوْا عَلٰى اَدْبَارِهِمْ نُفُوْرًا

WA EZAA ZAKARTA RABBAKA FIL QUR-AANE WAHDAHU WALLAW A’LAA ADBAAREHIM NOFOORAA

and when you mention your Lord alone in the Quran they turn their backs in aversion.

وَ اِذَا قَرَاْتَ الْقُرْاٰنَ جَعَلْنَا بَيْنَكَ

WA EZAA QARAA-TAL QUR-AANA JA-A’LNAA BAYNAKA

And when you recite the Quran, We place between you

وَ بَيْنَ الَّذِيْنَ لَا يُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِالْاٰخِرَةِ حِجَابًا مَسْتُوْرًا

WA BAYNAL LAZEENA LAA YO-MENOONA BIL-AAKHERATE HEJAABAM MASTOORAA

and those who do not believe in the hereafter a hidden barrier;

وَ جَعَلْنَا مِنْ ۢبَيْنِ اَيْدِيْهِمْ سَدًّا وَّ مِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ سَدًّا

WA JA-A’LNAA MIM BAYNE AYDEEHIM SADDANW WA MIN KHALFEHIM SADDAN

And We have made before them a barrier and a barrier behind them,

فَاَغْشَيْنَاهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُبْصِرُوْنَ

FA-AGHSHAYNAAHUM FAHUM LAA YUBSEROONA

then We have covered them over so that they do not see.

اَلْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلٰى اَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَ تُكَلِّمُنَا اَيْدِيْهِمْ

ALYAWMA NAKHTEMO A’LAA AFWAAHEHIM WA TOKALLEMONAA AYDEEHIM

On that day We will set a seal upon their mouths, and their hands shall speak to Us,

فَهُمْ لَا يَنْطِقُوْنَ

FAHUM LAA YANTEQOONA

so they shall not speak.

لَوْ اَنْفَقْتَ مَا فِى الْاَرْضِ جَمِيْعًا

LAW ANFAQTA MAA FIL ARZE JAMEEA’M

had you spent all that is in the earth,

مَّا اَلَّفْتَ بَيْنَ قُلُوْبِهِمْ

MAA ALLAFTA BAYNA QOLOOBEHIM

you could not have united their hearts,

وَلٰكِنَّ اللّٰهَ اَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ

WA LAAKINNAL LAAHA ALLAFA BAYNAHUM

but Allah united them;

اِنَّهٗ عَزِيْزٌ حَكِيْمٌ
