Dua Jawshan al Sagir

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

اِلٰهِيْ كَمْ مِنْ عَدُوٍّ انْتَضٰى عَلَيَّ سَيْفَ عَدَاوَتِهٖ

O my God, many an enemy unsheathed the sword of his hostility against me,

وَ شَحَذَ لِيْ ظُبَةَ مُدْيَتِهٖ

honed his dagger's edge against me,

وَ اَرْهَفَ لِيْ شَبَا حَدِّهٖ

sharpened the heads of his weapons against me,

وَ دَافَ لِيْ قَوَاتِلَ سُمُوْمِهٖ

mixed for me his deadly poisons,

وَ سَدَّدَ نَحْوِيْ صَوَائِبَ سِهَامِهٖ

leveled at me his hitting arrow,

وَ لَمْ تَنَمْ عَنِّيْ عَيْنُ حِرَاسَتِهٖ

kept a sleepless eye on me,

وَ اَضْمَرَ اَنْ يَسُوْمَنِي الْمَكْرُوْهَ

and decided secretly to target harm to me

وَ يُجَرِّعَنِيْ ذُعَافَ مَرَارَتِهٖ

and to make me taste the deadly poison of his bitterness.

فَنَظَرْتَ اِلٰى ضَعْفِيْ عَنِ احْتِمَالِ الْفَوَادِحِ

Then [Amid all that] You considered that I am too weak to bear hardships,

وَ عَجْزِيْ عَنِ الْاِنْتِصَارِ مِمَّنْ قَصَدَنِيْ بِمُحَارَبَتِهٖ

I am too short to have aid against him who aimed at attacking me,

وَ وَحْدَتِيْ فِيْ كَثِيْرِ مَنْ نَاوَانِيْ وَ اِرْصَادِهِمْ لِيْ

and You perceived my loneliness to confront many of those who incurred my hostility and laid in wait for me,

فِيْمَا لَمْ اُعْمِلْ فِيْهِ فِكْرِيْ فِيْ الْاِرْصَادِ لَهُمْ بِمِثْلِهٖ

while I have not been ready to give any thought to sitting in ambush and retaliating.

فَاَيَّدْتَنِيْ بِقُوَّتِكَ

So, You came to stand by me with Your might,

وَ شَدَدْتَ اَزْرِيْ بِنَصْرِكَ

made me strong through Your support,

وَ فَلَلْتَ لِيْ شَبَا حَدِّهٖ

notched his sharpness against me,

وَ خَذَلْتَهٗ بَعْدَ جَمْعِ عَدِيْدِهٖ وَ حَشْدِهٖ

disappointed him although he concentrated all his troops and crowds,

وَ اَعْلَيْتَ كَعْبِيْ عَلَيْهِ

You gave me the upper hand over him,

وَ وَجَّهْتَ مَا سَدَّدَ اِلَيَّ مِنْ مَكَايِدِهٖ‏ اِلَيْهِ

directed toward him the same traps that he had laid for me,

وَ رَدَدْتَهٗ عَلَيْهِ

and caused him to be engaged with his own traps.

وَ لَمْ يَشْفِ غَلِيْلَهٗ

Thus, he could not quench his thirst,

وَ لَمْ تَبْرُدْ حَرَارَاتُ غَيْظِهٖ

did not assuage the fury of his anger,

وَ قَدْ عَضَّ عَلَيَّ اَنَامِلَهٗ

bit his thumb [out of his malice toward me],

وَ اَدْبَرَ مُوَلِّيًا قَدْ اَخْفَقَتْ سَرَايَاهُ

and turned his back fleeing after his pennons had failed.

فَلَكَ الْحَمْدُ يَا رَبِّ

So, all praise be to You, O Lord;

مِنْ مُقْتَدِرٍ لَا يُغْلَبُ

You are invulnerably Omnipotent

وَ ذِي اَنَاةٍ لَا يَعْجَلُ

and prudently Forbearing.

صَلِّ عَلٰى مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

Bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

وَ اجْعَلْنِيْ لِاَنْعُمِكَ مِنَ الشَّاكِرِيْنَ

and include me with those who are thankful for Your bounties

وَ لِآلَائِكَ مِنَ الذَّاكِرِيْنَ

and those who permanently mention Your graces.

اِلٰهِيْ وَ كَمْ مِنْ بَاغٍ

O my God, many a tyrannical oppressor

بَغَانِيْ بِمَكَايِدِهٖ

made me the target of his oppressive trickeries,

وَ نَصَبَ لِيْ اَشْرَاكَ مَصَايِدِهٖ

set the traps of his hunting for me,

وَ وَكَّلَ بِيْ تَفَقُّدَ رِعَايَتِهٖ

continuously spied on me,

وَ اَضْبَاَ اِلَيَّ اِضْبَاءَ السَّبُعِ لِطَرِيْدَتِهِ

and waylaid me like a beast waylaying its prey

انْتِظَارًا لِانْتِهَازِ فُرْصَتِهٖ

in waiting for seizing the best opportunity [to catch me],

وَ هُوَ يُظْهِرُ لِيْ بَشَاشَةَ الْمَلَقِ

While he was showing me happy mien flatteringly

وَ يَبْسُطُ لِيْ وَجْهًا غَيْرَ طَلِقٍ

and displaying an uncheerful face.

فَلَمَّا رَاَيْتَ دَغَلَ سَرِيْرَتِهٖ

So, when You saw ill intention of his inner self

وَ قُبْحَ مَا انْطَوٰى عَلَيْهِ لِشَرِيْكِهٖ فِيْ مُلَبِّهٖ

and the ugliness of his determination against his partner in religion,
