Merits
Surah al-Balad (The City)
This Surah has 20 verses and it was revealed in Makkah. the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) has said that whoever recites this Surah will be safe from the Wrath of Allah (s.w.t.) on the Day of Reckoning. Those who recite this Surah in their obligatory prayers, will be counted among the pious and will given a highly status in the company of the Prophets and martyrs.
Writing this Surah as a talisman and tying it around the neck of a child keeps him safe from illness. Water on which this Surah has been dissolved, if put in the nostrils, acts as a cure for nose ailments.
Text and Translation
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
In the Name of Allah, the All-merciful, the All-compassionate
لَاۤ اُقْسِمُ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِۙ(1)
LAA UQSEMO BE-HAAZAL BALADE.
I do call to witness this City;-
وَاَنْتَ حِلٌّ ۢ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِۙ(2)
WA ANTA HILLUM BE-HAAZAL BALADE.
And thou art a freeman of this City;-
وَوَالِدٍ وَّمَا وَلَدَ ۙ(3)
WA WAALEDINW WA MAA WALADA.
And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;-
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ فِىْ كَبَدٍؕ(4)
LAQAD KHALAQNAL INSAANA FEE KABAD.
Verily We have created man into toil and struggle.
اَيَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَّنْ يَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ اَحَدٌ ۘ(5)
A-YAHSABO AL LAN-Y YAQDERA A’LAYHE AHAD.
Thinketh he, that none hath power over him?
يَقُوْلُ اَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ؕ(6)
YAQOOLO AHLAKTO MAALAL LOBADAA.
He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance!
اَيَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَّمْ يَرَهٗۤ اَحَدٌ ؕ(7)
A-YAHSABO AL LAM YARAHU AHAD.
Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?
اَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَّهٗ عَيْنَيْنِۙ(8)
ALAM NAJ-A’L LAHU A’YNAYNE.
Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?
وَلِسَانًا وَّشَفَتَيْنِۙ(9)
WA LESAANANW WA SHAFATAYNE.
And a tongue, and a pair of lips?
وَهَدَيْنٰهُ النَّجْدَيْنِۚ(10)
WA HADAYNAAHUN NAJDAYN.
And shown him the two highways?
فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَۖ(11)
FALAQ TAHAMAL A’QABAH.
But he hath made no haste on the path that is steep.
وَمَاۤ اَدْرٰٮكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ ؕ(12)
WA MAA ADRAAKA MAL A’QABAH.
And what will explain to thee the path that is steep?
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ۙ(13)
FAKKO RAQABATIN.
(It is:) freeing the bondman;
اَوْ اِطْعٰمٌ فِىْ يَوْمٍ ذِىْ مَسْغَبَةٍ ۙ(14)
AW IT-A’AMUN FEE YAWMIN ZEE MASGHABATIN-Y.
Or the giving of food in a day of privation
يَّتِيْمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ۙ(15)
YATEEMAN ZAA MAQRABATIN.
To the orphan with claims of relationship,
اَوْ مِسْكِيْنًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ؕ(16)
AW MISKEENAN ZAA MATRABAH.
Or to the indigent (down) in the dust.
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ ؕ(17)
SUMMA KAANA MENAL LAZEENA AAMANOO WA TAWAASAW BIS-SABRE WA TAWAASAW BIL MARHAMAH.
Then will he be of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and compassion.
اُولٰٓئِكَ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ ؕ(18)
OOLAAA-EKA ASHAABUL MAYMANAH.
Such are the Companions of the Right Hand.
وَالَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِاٰيٰتِنَا هُمْ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْئَمَةِ ؕ(19)
WAL LAZEENA KAFAROO BE-AAYAATENA HUM ASHAABUL MASH-AMAH.
But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand.
عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّؤْصَدَةٌ(20)
A’LAYHIM NAARUM MOOSADAH.
On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round).
