83: al-Motaffefeen المطففين

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِيْنَۙ‏(1)

WAYLUL LIL-MOTAFFEFEENAL.

Woe to the defrauders, who use short measures,

الَّذِيْنَ اِذَا اكْتَالُوْا عَلَى النَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُوْنَۖ‏(2)

LAZEENA EZAK TAALOO A’LAN NAASE YASTAWFOON.

who, when they measure [a commodity bought] from the people, take the full measure,

وَاِذَا كَالُوْهُمْ اَوْ وَّزَنُوْهُمْ يُخْسِرُوْنَؕ‏(3)

WA EZAA KAALOOHUM AW-WAZANOOHUM YUKHSEROON.

but diminish when they measure or weigh for them.

اَلَا يَظُنُّ اُولٰٓئِكَ اَنَّهُمْ مَّبْعُوْثُوْنَۙ‏(4)

ALAA YAZUNNO OOLAAA-EKA ANNAHUM MAB-O’OSOONA.

Do they not know that they will be resurrected

لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيْمٍۙ‏(5)

LE-YAWMIN A’ZEEMINY.

on a tremendous day,

يَّوْمَ يَقُوْمُ النَّاسُ لِرَبِّ الْعٰلَمِيْنَؕ‏(6)

YAWMA YAQOOMUN NAASO LE-RABBIL A’ALAMEEN.

a day when mankind will stand before the Lord of all the worlds?

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّ كِتٰبَ الْفُجَّارِ لَفِىْ سِجِّيْنٍؕ‏(7)

KALLAA INNA KETAABAL FUJJAARE LAFEE SIJJEEEN.

Indeed, the record of the vicious is in Sijjeen.

وَمَاۤ اَدْرٰٮكَ مَا سِجِّيْنٌؕ‏(8)

WA MAA ADRAAKA MAA SIJJEEN.

And what will show you what is Sijjeen?

كِتٰبٌ مَّرْقُوْمٌؕ‏(9)

KETAABUM MARQOOM.

It is a written record.

وَيْلٌ يَّوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِيْنَۙ‏(10)

WAYLUNY YAWMA-EZIL LIL-MOKAZZEBEENAL.

Woe to the deniers on that day,

الَّذِيْنَ يُكَذِّبُوْنَ بِيَوْمِ الدِّيْنِؕ‏(11)

LAZEENA YOKAZZEBOONA BE-YAWMID DEEN.

who deny the Day of Retribution;

وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهٖۤ اِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ اَثِيْمٍۙ‏(12)

WA MAA YOKAZZEBOKA BEHI ILLAA KULLO MO’TADIN ASEEM.

and none denies it except every sinful transgressor.

اِذَا تُتْلٰى عَلَيْهِ اٰيٰتُنَا قَالَ اَسَاطِيْرُ الْاَوَّلِيْنَؕ‏(13)

EZAA TUTLAA A’LAYHE AAYAATONAA QAALA ASAATEERUL AWWALEEN.

When Our signs are recited to him, he says, ‘Myths of the ancients!’

كَلَّا‌ بَلْ رَانَ عَلٰى قُلُوْبِهِمْ مَّا كَانُوْا يَكْسِبُوْنَ‏(14)

KALLAA BAL, RAANA A’LAA QOLOOBEHIM MAA KAANOO YAKSEBOON.

No, that is not the case! Rather, their hearts have been sullied by what they have been earning.

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّهُمْ عَنْ رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوْبُوْنَ‌ؕ‏(15)

KALLAAA INNAHUM A’R RABBEHIM YAWMAEZIL LA-MAHJOOBOON.

Indeed, they will be alienated from their Lord on that day.

ثُمَّ اِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا الْجَحِيْمِؕ‏(16)

SUMMA INNAHUM LA-SAALUL JAHEEM.

Afterward they will enter hell,

ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هٰذَا الَّذِىْ كُنْتُمْ بِهٖ تُكَذِّبُوْنَؕ‏(17)

SUMMA YOQAALO HAAZAL LAZEE KUNTUM BEHI TOKAZZEBOON.

then told, ‘This is what you used to deny!’

كَلَّاۤ اِنَّ كِتٰبَ الْاَبْرَارِ لَفِىْ عِلِّيِّيْنَؕ‏(18)

KALLAAA INNA KETAABAL ABRAARE LAFEE I’LLIYYEEN.

Indeed, the record of the pious is in Illeeyun.

وَمَاۤ اَدْرٰٮكَ مَا عِلِّيُّوْنَؕ‏(19)

WA MAA ADRAAKA MAA I’LLIYYOON.

And what will show you what is Illeeyun?

كِتٰبٌ مَّرْقُوْمٌۙ‏(20)

KETAABUM MARQOOMUN-Y.

It is a written record,

يَّشْهَدُهُ الْمُقَرَّبُوْنَؕ‏(21)

YASHADOHUL MOQARRABOON.

witnessed by those brought near [to Allah].

اِنَّ الْاَبْرَارَ لَفِىْ نَعِيْمٍۙ‏(22)

INNAL ABRAARA LAFEE NA-E’EMIN.

The pious shall be amid bliss,

عَلَى الْاَرَآئِكِ يَنْظُرُوْنَۙ‏(23)

A’LAL ARAAA-EKE YANZOROONA.

observing, [as they recline] on couches.

تَعْرِفُ فِىْ وُجُوْهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ النَّعِيْمِ‌ۚ‏(24)

TA’REFO FEE WOJOOHEHIM NAZRATAN NA-E’EM.

You will perceive in their faces the freshness of bliss.

يُسْقَوْنَ مِنْ رَّحِيْقٍ مَّخْتُوْمٍۙ‏(25)

YUSQAWNA MIR RAHEEQIM MAKHTOOMIN.

They will be served with a sealed pure wine,

خِتٰمُهٗ مِسْكٌ ‌ؕ وَفِىْ ذٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ الْمُتَنَافِسُوْنَ‏(26)

KHETAAMOHU MISK, WA FEE ZAALEKA FAL-YATANAAFASIL MOTANAAFESOON.

whose seal is musk—for such let the viers vie—

وَ مِزَاجُهٗ مِنْ تَسْنِيْمٍۙ‏(27)

WA ME-ZAAJOHU MIN TASNEEMIN.

and whose seasoning is from Tasneem,

عَيْنًا يَّشْرَبُ بِهَا الْمُقَرَّبُوْنَؕ‏(28)

A’YNANY YASHRABO BEHAL MOQARRABOON.

a spring where those brought near [to Allah] drink.

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ اَجْرَمُوْا كَانُوْا مِنَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا يَضْحَكُوْنَ ۖ‏(29)

INNAL LAZEENA AJRAMOO KAANOO MENAL LAZEENA AAMANOO YAZHAKOON.

Indeed the guilty used to laugh at the faithful,

وَاِذَا مَرُّوْا بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُوْنَ ۖ‏(30)

WA EZAA MARROO BEHIM YATAGHAAMAZOON.

and when they passed them by they would wink at each other,

وَاِذَا انْقَلَبُوْۤا اِلٰٓى اَهْلِهِمُ انْقَلَبُوْا فَكِهِيْنَ ۖ‏(31)

WA EZAN QALABOO ELAA AHLEHEMUN QALABOO FAKEHEEN.

and when they returned to their folks they would return amused,

وَاِذَا رَاَوْهُمْ قَالُوْۤا اِنَّ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ لَضَآلُّوْنَۙ‏(32)

WA EZAA RA-AWHUM QAALOO INNA HAA-OOLAAA-E LA-ZAAAL-LOONA.

and when they saw them they would say, ‘Indeed those are the astray!’

وَمَاۤ اُرْسِلُوْا عَلَيْهِمْ حٰفِظِيْنَۙ‏(33)

WA MAA URSELOO A’LAYHIM HAAFEZEEN.

Though they were not sent to watch over them.

فَالْيَوْمَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا مِنَ الْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُوْنَۙ‏(34)

FAL-YAWMAL LAZEENA AAMANOO MENAL KUFFAARE YAZHAKOONA.

So today the faithful will laugh at the faithless,

عَلَى الْاَرَآئِكِۙ يَنْظُرُوْنَؕ‏(35)

A’LAL ARAAA-EKE, YANZOROON.

observing from their couches:

هَلْ ثُوِّبَ الْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوْا يَفْعَلُوْنَ‏(36)

HAL SUWWEBAL KUFFAARO MAA KAANOO YAF-A’LOON.

Have the faithless been requited for what they used to do?
