76: al-Insaan الانسان

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

هَلْ اَتٰى عَلَى الْاِنْسَانِ حِيْنٌ مِّنَ الدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُنْ شَيْئًا مَّذْكُوْرًا‏(1)

HAL ATAA A’LAL INSAANE HEENUM MENAD DAHRE LAM YAKUN SHAY-AM MAZKOORAA.

Has there been a period of time for man when he was not anything worthy of mention?

اِنَّا خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ مِنْ نُّطْفَةٍ اَمْشَاجٍۖ نَّبْتَلِيْهِ فَجَعَلْنٰهُ سَمِيْعًۢا بَصِيْرًا‏(2)

INNAA KHALAQNAL INSAANA MIN NUTFATIN AMSHAAZIN, NABTALEEHE FA-JA-A’LNAAHO SAMEE-A’M BASEERAA.

Indeed We created man from the drop of a mixed fluid so that We may put him to test, so We endowed with hearing and sight.

اِنَّا هَدَيْنٰهُ السَّبِيْلَ اِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَّاِمَّا كَفُوْرًا‏(3)

INNAA HADAYNAAHUS SABEELA IMMAA SHAAKERAWN WA IMMAA KAFOORAA.

Indeed We have guided him to the way, be he grateful or ungrateful.

اِنَّاۤ اَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكٰفِرِيْنَ سَلٰسِلَا۟ وَاَغْلٰلًا وَّسَعِيْرًا‏(4)

INNAA A-A’TADNAA LIL KAAFEREENA SALAASELAA WA AGHLAALAWN WA SA-E’ERAA.

Indeed for the faithless We have prepared chains, iron collars, and a blaze.

اِنَّ الْاَبْرَارَ يَشْرَبُوْنَ مِنْ كَاْسٍ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُوْرًاۚ‏(5)

INNAL ABRAARA YASHRABOONA MIN KA’SIN KAANA MEZAAJOHAA KAAFOORAA.

Indeed the pious will drink from a cup seasoned with Kafur,

عَيْنًا يَّشْرَبُ بِهَا عِبَادُ اللّٰهِ يُفَجِّرُوْنَهَا تَفْجِيْرًا‏(6)

A’YNAYN YASHRABO BEHAA E’BAADULLAAHE YOFAJJEROONAHAA TAFJEERAA.

a spring where Allah’s servants will drink, making it gush forth as they please.

يُوْفُوْنَ بِالنَّذْرِ وَيَخَافُوْنَ يَوْمًا كَانَ شَرُّهٗ مُسْتَطِيْرًا‏(7)

YOOFOONA BIN-NAZRE WA YAKHAAFOONA YAWMAN KAANA SARROHU MUSTA-TEERAA.

They fulfill their vows and fear a day whose ill will be widespread.

وَيُطْعِمُوْنَ الطَّعَامَ عَلٰى حُبِّهٖ مِسْكِيْنًا وَّيَتِيْمًا وَّاَسِيْرًا‏(8)

WA YUT-E’MUNAT TA-A’AMA A’LAA HUBBEHI MISKEENAWN WA YATEEMAWN WA ASEERAA.

For the love of Him, they feed the needy, the orphan and the prisoner,

اِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ اللّٰهِ لَا نُرِيْدُ مِنْكُمْ جَزَآءً وَّلَا شُكُوْرًا‏(9)

INNAMAA NUT-E’MOKUM LE WAJHIL LAAHE LAA NOREEDO MINKUM JA-ZAAA-AWN WA LAA SHOKOORAA.

[saying,] ‘We feed you only for the sake of Allah. We desire no reward from you, nor thanks.

اِنَّا نَخَافُ مِنْ رَّبِّنَا يَوْمًا عَبُوْسًا قَمْطَرِيْرًا‏(10)

INNAA NAKHAAFO MIR RABBENAA YAWMAN A’BOOSAN QAMTAREERAA.

Indeed we fear a frowning and fateful day from our Lord.’

فَوَقٰٮهُمُ اللّٰهُ شَرَّ ذٰلِكَ الْيَوْمِ وَ لَقّٰٮهُمْ نَضْرَةً وَّسُرُوْرًاۚ‏(11)

FA-WAQAAHOMUL LAAHO SHARRA ZAALEKAL YAWME WA LAQQAAHUM NAZRATAWN WA SOROORAA.

So Allah saved them from that day’s ills and graced them with freshness [on this faces] and joy [in their hearts].

وَجَزٰٮهُمْ بِمَا صَبَرُوْا جَنَّةً وَّحَرِيْرًا ۙ‏(12)

WA JA-ZAAHUM BEMAA SABAROO JANNATAWN WA HAREERAM.

He rewarded them for their patience with a garden and [garments of] silk,

مُّتَّكِئِيْنَ فِيْهَا عَلَى الْاَرَآئِكِۚ لَا يَرَوْنَ فِيْهَا شَمْسًا وَّلَا زَمْهَرِيْرًاۚ‏(13)

MUT-TAKE-EENA FEEHAA A’LAL A-RAAA-EK, LAA YARAWNA FEEHAA SHAMSAWN WA LAA ZAMHAREERAA.

reclining therein on couches, without facing any [scorching] sun, or [biting] cold.

وَدَانِيَةً عَلَيْهِمْ ظِلٰلُهَا وَذُلِّلَتْ قُطُوْفُهَا تَذْلِيْلًا‏(14)

WA DAANEYATAN A’LAYHIM ZELAALOHAA WA ZULLAT QOTOOFOHAA TAZLEELAA.

Its shades will be close over them and its clusters [of fruits] will be hanging low.

وَيُطَافُ عَلَيْهِمْ بِاٰنِيَةٍ مِّنْ فِضَّةٍ وَّاَكْوَابٍ كَانَتْ قَوَارِيْرَا۟ؔ ۙ‏(15)

WA YOTAAFO A’LAYHIM BE-AANEYATIM MIN FIZZATIWN WA AKWAABIN KAANAT QAWAAREERAA.

They will be served around with vessels of silver and goblets of crystal

قَوَارِيْرَا۟ؔ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ قَدَّرُوْهَا تَقْدِيْرًا‏(16)

QAWAAREERAA MIN FIZZATIN QADDAROOHAA TAQDEERAA.

—crystal of silver— [from] which they will dispense in a precise measure.

وَيُسْقَوْنَ فِيْهَا كَاْسًا كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنْجَبِيْلًا ۚ‏(17)

WA YUSQAWNA FEEHAA KA’SAN KAANA MEZAAJOHAA ZANJABEELAA.

They will be served therein with a cup of a drink seasoned with Zanjabeel,

عَيْنًا فِيْهَا تُسَمّٰى سَلْسَبِيْلًا‏(18)

A’YNAN FEEHAA TOSAMMAA SAL-SABEELAA.

from a spring in it named Salsabeel.

وَيَطُوْفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُوْنَۚ اِذَا رَاَيْتَهُمْ حَسِبْتَهُمْ لُؤْلُؤًا مَّنْثُوْرًا‏(19)

WA YATOOFO A’LAYHIM WILDAANUM MOKHALLADOON, EZAA RA-AYTAHUM HASIBTAHUM LO’LO-AM MANSOORAA.

They will be waited upon by immortal youths, whom, were you to see them, you will suppose them to be scattered pearls.

وَاِذَا رَاَيْتَ ثَمَّ رَاَيْتَ نَعِيْمًا وَّمُلْكًا كَبِيْرًا‏(20)

WA EZAA RA-AYTA SUMMA RA-AYTA NA-E’EMAWN WA MULKAN KABEERAA.

As you look on, you will see there bliss and a great kingdom.

عٰلِيَهُمْ ثِيَابُ سُنْدُسٍ خُضْرٌ وَّاِسْتَبْرَقٌ وَّحُلُّوْۤا اَسَاوِرَ مِنْ فِضَّةٍ ۚوَسَقٰٮهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ شَرَابًا طَهُوْرًا‏(21)

A’ALEYAHUM SEYAABO SUNDOSIN KHUZRUWN WA ISTABRAQUWN, WA HULLOO ASAAWERA MIN FIZZAH, WA SAQAAHUM RABBOHUM SHARAABAN TAHOORAA.

Upon them will be cloaks of green silk and brocade and they will be adorned with bracelets of silver. Their Lord will give them to drink a pure drink.

اِنَّ هٰذَا كَانَ لَكُمْ جَزَآءً وَّكَانَ سَعْيُكُمْ مَّشْكُوْرًا‏(22)

INNA HAAZAA KAANA LAKUM JA-ZAAA-AWN WA KAANA SA’YOKUM MASHKOORAA.

[They will be told]: ‘This is your reward, and your efforts have been well-appreciated.’

اِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْقُرْاٰنَ تَنْزِيْلًا ۚ‏(23)

INNAA NAHNO NAZZALNAA A’LAYKAL QURAANA TANZEELAA.

Indeed We have sent down to you the Quran in a gradual descent.

فَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تُطِعْ مِنْهُمْ اٰثِمًا اَوْ كَفُوْرًاۚ‏(24)

FASBIR LE HUKME RABBEKA WA LAA TO-TE’ MINHUM AASEMAN AW KAFOORAA.

So submit patiently to the judgement of your Lord and do not obey any sinner or ingrate from among them,

وَاذْكُرِ اسْمَ رَبِّكَ بُكْرَةً وَّاَصِيْلًا ۚ ۖ‏(25)

WAZKORISMA RABBEKA BUKRATAWN WA ASEELAA.

and celebrate the Name of your Lord morning and evening,

وَمِنَ الَّيْلِ فَاسْجُدْ لَهٗ وَسَبِّحْهُ لَيْلًا طَوِيْلًا‏(26)

WA MENAL LAYLE FASJUD LAHU WA SABBEH-HO LAYLAN TAWEELAA.

and worship Him for a watch of the night and glorify Him the night long.

اِنَّ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ يُحِبُّوْنَ الْعَاجِلَةَ وَيَذَرُوْنَ وَرَآءَهُمْ يَوْمًا ثَقِيْلًا‏(27)

INNA HAA-O-LAAA-E YOHIBBOONAL A’AJELATA WA YAZAROONA WA RAAA-AHUM YAWMAN SAQEELAA.

Indeed they love this transitory life, and disregard a heavy day that is ahead of them.

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنٰهُمْ وَشَدَدْنَاۤ اَسْرَهُمْۚ وَاِذَا شِئْنَا بَدَّلْنَاۤ اَمْثَالَهُمْ تَبْدِيْلًا‏(28)

NAHNO KHALAQNAAHUM WA SHADADNAA ASRAHUM, WA EZAA SHE’NAA BAD-DALNAA AMSAALAHUM TABDEELAA.

We created them and strengthened their joints, and We will replace them with others like them whenever We like.

اِنَّ هٰذِهٖ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۚ فَمَنْ شَآءَ اتَّخَذَ اِلٰى رَبِّهٖ سَبِيْلًا‏(29)

INNA HAAZEHI TAZKERAH, FAMAN SHAAA-AT TAKHAZA ELAA RABBEHI SABEELAA.

This is indeed a reminder. So let anyone who wishes take the way toward his Lord.

وَمَا تَشَآءُوْنَ اِلَّاۤ اَنْ يَّشَآءَ اللّٰهُ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ كَانَ عَلِيْمًا حَكِيْمًا ۖ‏(30)

WAMAA TA-SHAAA-OONA ILLAA AYN YA-SHAAA-ALLAAH, INNALLAAHA KAANA A’LEEMAN HAKEEMAYN.

But you will not wish unless it is willed by Allah. Indeed Allah is all-knowing, all-wise.

يُّدْخِلُ مَنْ يَّشَآءُ فِىْ رَحْمَتِهٖؕ وَالظّٰلِمِيْنَ اَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا اَلِيْمًا‏(31)

YUDKHELO MAYN YA-SHAAA-O FEE RAHMATEH, WAZ ZAALEMEENA A-A’DDA LAHUM A’ZAABAN ALEEMAA.

He admits whomever He wishes into His mercy, and He has prepared a painful punishment for the wrongdoers.
