56: al-Waaqeah الواقعة

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

اِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ ۙ‏(1)

EZAA WAQA-A’TIL WAAQE-A’TO.

When the Imminent [Hour] befalls

لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ ۘ‏(2)

LAYSA LE-WAQA’TEHAA KAAZEBAH.

—there is no denying that it will befall—

خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ ۙ‏(3)

KHAAFEZATUR RAAFE-A’TUN.

[it will be] lowering and exalting.

اِذَا رُجَّتِ الْاَرْضُ رَجًّا ۙ‏(4)

EZAA RUJJATIL ARZO RAJJANW.

When the earth is shaken violently,

وَّبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا ۙ‏(5)

WA BUSSATIL JEBAALO BASSAN.

and the mountains are shattered into bits

فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنْۢبَثًّا ۙ‏(6)

FA-KAANAT HABAAA-AM MUMBASSANW.

and become scattered dust,

وَّكُنْتُمْ اَزْوَاجًا ثَلٰثَةً ؕ‏(7)

WA KUNTUM AZWAAJAN SALAASAH.

you will be three groups:

فَاَصْحٰبُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ ۙ مَاۤ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ ؕ‏(8)

FA-ASHAABUL MAYMANATE MAA ASHAABUL MAYMANAH.

The People of the Right Hand—and what are the People of the Right Hand?!

وَاَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْئَمَةِ ۙ مَاۤ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْئَمَةِؕ‏(9)

WA ASHAABUL MASH-AMATE, MAA ASHAABUL MASH-AMAH.

And the People of the Left Hand—and what are the People of the Left Hand?!

وَالسّٰبِقُوْنَ السّٰبِقُوْنَۚ ۙ‏(10)

WAS-SAABEQOONAS SAABEQOON.

And the Foremost Ones are the foremost ones:

اُولٰٓئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُوْنَۚ‏(11)

OOLAAEKAL MOQARRABOON.

they are the ones brought near [to Allah],

فِىْ جَنّٰتِ النَّعِيْمِ‏(12)

FEE JANNATIN NA-EE’M.

[who will reside] in the gardens of bliss.

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْاَوَّلِيْنَۙ‏(13)

SULLATUM MENAL AWWALEEN.

A multitude from the former [generations]

وَقَلِيْلٌ مِّنَ الْاٰخِرِيْنَؕ‏(14)

WA QALEELUM MENAL AAKHEREEN.

and a few from the latter ones.

عَلٰى سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُوْنَةٍۙ‏(15)

A’LAA SORORIM MAWZOONATIM.

On brocaded couches

مُّتَّكِئِيْنَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقٰبِلِيْنَ‏(16)

MUTTAKE-EENA A’LAYHAA MOTAQAABELEEN.

reclining on them, face to face.

يَطُوْفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُّخَلَّدُوْنَۙ‏(17)

YATOOFO A’LAYHIM WILDAANUM MOKHALLADOON.

They will be waited upon by immortal youths,

بِاَكْوَابٍ وَّاَبَارِيْقَ ۙ وَكَاْسٍ مِّنْ مَّعِيْنٍۙ‏(18)

BE-AKWAABIWN WA ABAAREEQA, WA KAASIM MIM MA-E’ENIL.

with goblets and ewers and a cup of a clear wine,

لَّا يُصَدَّعُوْنَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنْزِفُوْنَۙ‏(19)

LAA YOSADDA-O’ONA A’NHAA WA LAA YUNZEFOON.

which causes them neither headache nor stupefaction,

وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُوْنَۙ‏(20)

WA FAAKEHATIM MIMMAA YATAKHAY-YAROON.

and such fruits as they prefer

وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُوْنَؕ‏(21)

WA LAHME TAYRIM MIMMAA YASHTAHOON.

and such flesh of fowls as they desire,

وَحُوْرٌ عِيْنٌۙ‏(22)

WA HOORUN E’ENUN.

and big-eyed houris

كَاَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِالْمَكْنُوْنِۚ‏(23)

KA-AMSAALIL LO-LO-IL MAKNOON.

like guarded pearls,

جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ‏(24)

JAZAAA-AM BEMAA KAANOO YA’MALOON.

a reward for what they used to do.

لَا يَسْمَعُوْنَ فِيْهَا لَغْوًا وَّلَا تَاْثِيْمًا ۙ‏(25)

LAA YASMA-O’ONA FEEHAA LAGHWANW WA LAA TAA-SEEMAN.

They will not hear therein any vain talk or sinful speech,

اِلَّا قِيْلًا سَلٰمًا سَلٰمًا‏(26)

ILLAA QEELAN SALAAMAN SALAAMAA.

but only the watchword, ‘Peace!’ ‘Peace!’

وَاَصْحٰبُ الْيَمِيْنِ ۙ مَاۤ اَصْحٰبُ الْيَمِيْنِؕ‏(27)

WA AS-HAABUL YAMEENE, MAA AS-HAABUL YAAMEEN.

And the People of the Right Hand—what are the People of the Right Hand?!

فِىْ سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُوْدٍۙ‏(28)

FEE SIDRIM MAKHZOODIN.

Amid thornless lote trees

وَّطَلْحٍ مَّنْضُوْدٍۙ‏(29)

WA TALHIM MANZOODIN.

and clustered spathes

وَّظِلٍّ مَّمْدُوْدٍۙ‏(30)

WA ZILLIM MAMDOODIN.

and extended shade,

وَّ مَآءٍ مَّسْكُوْبٍۙ‏(31)

WA MAAA-IM MASKOOBINW.

and ever-flowing water

وَّفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِيْرَةٍۙ‏(32)

WA FAAKEHATIN KASEERATIL.

and abundant fruits,

لَّا مَقْطُوْعَةٍ وَّلَا مَمْنُوْعَةٍۙ‏(33)

LAA MAQTOO-A’TIN WA LAA MAMNOO-A’TINW.

neither inaccessible, nor forbidden,

وَّ فُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوْعَةٍؕ‏(34)

WA FOROSHIM MARFOO-A’H.

and noble spouses.

اِنَّاۤ اَنْشَاْنٰهُنَّ اِنْشَآءًۙ‏(35)

INNAA AN-SHAANAAHUNNA INSHAA-AN.

We have created them with a special creation,

فَجَعَلْنٰهُنَّ اَبْكَارًاۙ‏(36)

FA JA-A’LNAAHUNNA ABKAARAN.

and made them virgins,

عُرُبًا اَتْرَابًاۙ‏(37)

O’ROBAN ATRAABAL.

loving, of a like age,

لِّاَصْحٰبِ الْيَمِيْنِؕ‏(38)

LE-ASHAABIL YAMEEN.

for the People of the Right Hand.

ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْاَوَّلِيْنَۙ‏(39)

SULLATUM MENAL AWWALEENA.

A multitude from the former [generations]

وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ الْاٰخِرِيْنَؕ‏(40)

WA SULLATUM MENAL AAKHEREEN.

and a multitude from the latter [ones].

وَاَصْحٰبُ الشِّمَالِ ۙ مَاۤ اَصْحٰبُ الشِّمَالِؕ‏(41)

WA AS-HAABUSH SHEMAALE, MAA AS-HAABUSH SHEMAAL.

And the People of the Left Hand—what are the People of the Left Hand?!

فِىْ سَمُوْمٍ وَّحَمِيْمٍۙ‏(42)

FEE SAMOOMINW WA HAMEEMIWNW.

Amid infernal miasma and boiling water

وَّظِلٍّ مِّنْ يَّحْمُوْمٍۙ‏(43)

WA ZILLIM MINY YAHMOOMIL.

and the shadow of a dense black smoke,

لَّا بَارِدٍ وَّلَا كَرِيْمٍ‏(44)

LAA BAAREDINW WA LAA KAREEM.

neither cool nor beneficial.

اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا قَبْلَ ذٰ لِكَ مُتْرَفِيْنَۚ ۖ‏(45)

INNAHUM KAANOO QABLA ZAALEKA MUTRAFEEN.

Indeed they had been affluent before this,

وَكَانُوْا يُصِرُّوْنَ عَلَى الْحِنْثِ الْعَظِيْمِۚ‏(46)

WA KAANOO YOSIRROONA A’LAL HINSIL A’ZEEM.

and they used to persist in the great sin.

وَكَانُوْا يَقُوْلُوْنَ ۙ اَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَّعِظَامًا ءَاِنَّا لَمَبْعُوْثُوْنَۙ‏(47)

WA KAANU YAQOOLOONA, A-EZAA MITNAA WA KUNNAA TORAABANW WA E’ZAAMAN A-INNAA LA-MABO’OSOON.

And they used to say, ‘What! When we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we be resurrected?!

اَوَاٰبَآؤُنَا الْاَوَّلُوْنَ‏(48)

AWA-AABAAA-ONAL AWWALOON.

And our forefathers too?!’

قُلْ اِنَّ الْاَوَّلِيْنَ وَالْاٰخِرِيْنَۙ‏(49)

QUL INNAL AWWALEENA WAL AAKHEREEN.

Say, ‘Indeed the former and latter generations

لَمَجْمُوْعُوْنَ ۙ اِلٰى مِيْقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُوْمٍ‏(50)

LA-MAJMOO-OO’NA, ELAA MEEQAATE YAWMIM MA’LOOM.

will all be gathered for the tryst of a known day.

ثُمَّ اِنَّكُمْ اَيُّهَا الضَّآلُّوْنَ الْمُكَذِّبُوْنَۙ‏(51)

SUMMA INNAKUM AYYOHAZ ZAALLOONAL MOKAZZEBOON.

Then indeed, you, astray deniers,

لَاٰكِلُوْنَ مِنْ شَجَرٍ مِّنْ زَقُّوْمٍۙ‏(52)

LA-AAKELOONA MIN SHAZARIM MIN ZAQQOOMIN.

will surely eat from the Zaqqum tree

فَمٰلِئُوْنَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُوْنَۚ‏(53)

FAMAA-LE-OONA MINHAL BOTOON.

and stuff your bellies with it,

فَشٰرِبُوْنَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِيْمِۚ‏(54)

FA-SHAAREBOONA A’LAYHE MENAL HAMEEM.

and drink boiling water on top of it,

فَشٰرِبُوْنَ شُرْبَ الْهِيْمِؕ‏(55)

FA-SHAAREBOONA SHURBAL HEEM.

drinking like thirsty camels.’

هٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدِّيْنِؕ‏(56)

HAAZAA NOZOLOHUM YAWMAD DEEN.

Such will be the hospitality they receive on the Day of Retribution.

نَحْنُ خَلَقْنٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُوْنَ‏(57)

NAHNO KHALAQNAAKUM FA-LAWLAA TOSADDEQOON.

We created you. Then why do you not acknowledge it?

اَفَرَءَيْتُمْ مَّا تُمْنُوْنَؕ‏(58)

AFA-RA-AYTUM MAA TUMNOON.

Have you considered the sperm that you emit?

ءَاَنْتُمْ تَخْلُقُوْنَهٗۤ اَمْ نَحْنُ الْخٰلِقُوْنَ‏(59)

A-ANTUM TAKHLOQOO-NAHU AM NAHNUL KHAALEQOON.

Is it you who create it, or are We the creator?

نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوْقِيْنَۙ‏(60)

NAHNO QADDARNAA BAYNAKOMUL MAWTA WA MAA NAHNO BE-MASBOOQEEN.

We have ordained death among you, and We are not to be outmaneuvered

عَلٰٓى اَنْ نُّبَدِّلَ اَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنْشِئَكُمْ فِىْ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُوْنَ‏(61)

A’LAA AN NOBADDELA AMSAALAKUM WA NUNSHE-AKUM FEE MAA LAA TA’LAMOON.

from replacing you with your likes and recreating you in [a realm] you do not know.

وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْاَةَ الْاُوْلٰى فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُوْنَ‏(62)

WA LAQAD A’LIMTOMUN NASH-ATAL OOLAA FA LAWLAA TAZAKKAROON.

Certainly you have known the first genesis, then why do you not take admonition?

اَفَرَءَيْتُمْ مَّا تَحْرُثُوْنَؕ‏(63)

AFARA-AYTUM MAA TAHROSOON.

Have you considered what you sow?

ءَاَنْتُمْ تَزْرَعُوْنَهٗۤ اَمْ نَحْنُ الزّٰرِعُوْنَ‏(64)

A-ANTUM TAZRA-O’ONAHU AM NAHNUZ ZAARE-O’ON.

Is it you who make it grow, or are We the grower?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنٰهُ حُطَامًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُوْنَ‏(65)

LAW NASHAAA-O LAJA-A’LNAAHO HOTAAMAN FA ZALTUM TAFAKKAHOON.

If We wish, We turn it into chaff, whereat you are left stunned [saying to yourselves,]

اِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُوْنَۙ‏(66)

INNAA LA MUGHRAMOON.

‘Indeed we have suffered loss!

بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُوْمُوْنَ‏(67)

BAL NAHNO MAHROOMOON.

No, we are deprived!’

اَفَرَءَيْتُمُ الْمَآءَ الَّذِىْ تَشْرَبُوْنَؕ‏(68)

AFARA-AYTOMUL MAAA-AL LAZEE TASHRABOON.

Have you considered the water that you drink?

ءَاَنْتُمْ اَنْزَلْتُمُوْهُ مِنَ الْمُزْنِ اَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْزِلُوْنَ‏(69)

A-ANTUM ANZALTOMOOHO MENAL MUZNE AM NAHNUL MUNZELOON.

Is it you who bring it down from the rain cloud, or is it We who bring [it] down?

لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنٰهُ اُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُوْنَ‏(70)

LAW NASHAAA-O JA-A’LNAAHO OJAAJAN FALAWLAA TASHKOROON.

If We wish We can make it bitter. Then why do you not give thanks?

اَفَرَءَيْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِىْ تُوْرُوْنَؕ‏(71)

AFARA-AYTOMUN NAARAL LATEE TOOROON.

Have you considered the fire that you kindle?

ءَاَنْتُمْ اَنْشَاْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَاۤ اَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْشِئُوْنَ‏(72)

A-ANTUM AN-SHAATUM SHAJARATAHAA AM NAHNUL MUNSHE-OON.

Was it you who caused its tree to grow, or were We the grower?

نَحْنُ جَعَلْنٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَّمَتَاعًا لِّلْمُقْوِيْنَۚ‏(73)

NAHNO JA-A’LNAAHAA TAZKERATANW WA MATAA-A’L LILMUQWEEN.

It was We who made it a reminder and a boon for the desert-dwellers.

فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيْمِ‏(74)

FA-SABBEH BISME RABBEKAL A’ZEEM.

So celebrate the Name of your Lord, the All-supreme.

فَلَاۤ اُقْسِمُ بِمَوٰقِعِ النُّجُوْمِۙ‏‏(75)

FALAA UQSEMO BE MAWAA-QE-I’N NOJOOM.

I swear by the places where the stars set!

وَاِنَّهٗ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُوْنَ عَظِيْمٌۙ‏(76)

WA INNAHU LAQASAMUL LAW TA’LAMOONA A’ZEEM.

And indeed it is a great oath, should you know.

اِنَّهٗ لَقُرْاٰنٌ كَرِيْمٌۙ‏(77)

INNAHU LA-QURAANUN KAREEMUN.

This is indeed a noble Quran,

فِىْ كِتٰبٍ مَّكْنُوْنٍۙ‏(78)

FEE KETAABIM MAKNOONIL.

in a guarded Book

لَّا يَمَسُّهٗۤ اِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُوْنَؕ‏(79)

LAA YAMASSOHU ILLAL MOTAHHAROON.

—no one touches it except the pure ones—

تَنْزِيْلٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ‏(80)

TANZEELUM MIR RABBIL A’ALAMEEN.

sent down gradually from the Lord of all the worlds.

اَفَبِهٰذَا الْحَدِيْثِ اَنْتُمْ مُّدْهِنُوْنَۙ‏(81)

AFA-BE HAAZAL HADEESE ANTUM MUDHENOON.

What! Do you take lightly this discourse?

وَتَجْعَلُوْنَ رِزْقَكُمْ اَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُوْنَ‏(82)

WA TAJ-A’LOONA RIZQAKUM ANNAKUM TOKAZZEBOON.

And make your denial of it your vocation?

فَلَوْلَاۤ اِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُوْمَۙ‏(83)

FALAWLAA EZAA BALAGHATIL HULQOOM.

So when it reaches the throat [of the dying person],

وَاَنْتُمْ حِيْنَئِذٍ تَنْظُرُوْنَۙ‏(84)

WA ANTUM HEENA-EZIN TANZOROON.

and at that moment you are looking on [at his bedside]

وَنَحْنُ اَقْرَبُ اِلَيْهِ مِنْكُمْ وَلٰكِنْ لَّا تُبْصِرُوْنَ‏(85)

WA NAHNO AQRABO ELAYHE MINKUM WA LAAKIL LAA TUBSEROON.

—and We are nearer to him than you are, though you do not perceive—

فَلَوْلَاۤ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِيْنِيْنَۙ‏(86)

FA-LAWLAA IN KUNTUM GHAYRA MADEENEEN.

then why do you not restore it, if you are not subject

تَرْجِعُوْنَهَاۤ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ صٰدِقِيْنَ‏(87)

TARJE-O’ONAHAA IN KUNTUM SAADEQEEN.

[to Divine dispensation], if you are truthful?

فَاَمَّاۤ اِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِيْنَۙ‏(88)

FA-AMMAA IN KAANA MENAL MOQARRABEEN.

Then, if he be of those brought near,

فَرَوْحٌ وَّ رَيْحَانٌ ۙ وَّجَنَّتُ نَعِيْمٍ‏(89)

FA RAWHUNW WA RAYHAANUNW, WA JANNATO NA-EE’M.

then ease, abundance, and a garden of bliss.

وَاَمَّاۤ اِنْ كَانَ مِنْ اَصْحٰبِ الْيَمِيْنِۙ‏(90)

WA AMMAA IN KAANA MIN ASHAABIL YAMEEN.

And if he be of the People of the Right Hand,

فَسَلٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ اَصْحٰبِ الْيَمِيْنِؕ‏(91)

FA-SALAAMUL LAKA MIN AS-HAABIL YAMEEN.

then [he will be told,] ‘Peace be on you, from the People of the Right Hand!’

وَاَمَّاۤ اِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِيْنَ الضَّآلِّيْنَۙ‏(92)

WA AMMAA IN KAANA MENAL MOKAZZEBEENAZ ZAAL-LEEN.

But if he be of the impugners, the astray ones,

فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيْمٍۙ‏(93)

FANOZOLUM MIN HAMEEMINW.

then a treat of boiling water

وَّتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيْمٍ‏(94)

WA TASLEYATO JAHEEM.

and entry into hell.

اِنَّ هٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ الْيَقِيْنِۚ‏(95)

INNA HAAZAA LAHOWA HAQQUL YAQEEN.

Indeed this is certain truth.

فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيْمِ‏(96)

FA-SABBEH BISME RABBEKAL A’ZEEM.

So celebrate the Name of your Lord, the All-supreme!
