Merits
This Surah has 78 verses and it is ‘Makki’. Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) has said that reciting this Surah on Friday after the dawn prayers carries great reward. Surah as-Rahman removes hypocrisy from one’s heart.
On the Day of Judgement, this Surah will come in the shape of a human being who will be handsome and will have a very nice scent. Allah (s.w.t.) will then tell him to point out those people who used to recite this Surah and he will name them. Then he will be allowed to beg pardon for those whom he names and Allah (s.w.t.) will pardon them.
The Imam (a.s.) also said that if a person dies after reciting this Surah, then is considered a martyr. Writing this Surah and keeping it makes all difficulties and problems vanish and also cures eye ailments. Writing it on the walls of a house keeps away all types of household pests. If recited at night, then Allah (s.w.t.) sends an angel to guard the reciter until he wakes up and if recited in the daytime then an angel guards him until sunset.
Text and Translation
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM
In the Name of Allah, the All-merciful, the All-compassionate
اَلرَّحْمٰنُۙ(1)
AR-RAHMAAN.
The Beneficent Allah,
عَلَّمَ الْقُرْاٰنَؕ(2)
A’LLAMAL QURAAN.
Taught the Quran.
خَلَقَ الْاِنْسَانَۙ(3)
KHALAQAL INSAAN.
He created man,
عَلَّمَهُ الْبَيَانَ(4)
A’LLAMAHUL BAYAAN.
Taught him the mode of expression.
اَلشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ(5)
ASH-SHAMSO WAL-QAMARO BE HUSBAANIN.
The sun and the moon follow a reckoning.
وَّالنَّجْمُ وَالشَّجَرُ يَسْجُدٰنِ(6)
WAN-NAJMO WASH-SHAJARO YASJODAAN.
And the herbs and the trees do prostrate (to Him).
وَالسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الْمِيْزَانَۙ(7)
WAS-SAMAAA-A RAFA-A’HAA WA-WAZA-A’L MEEZAAN.
And the heaven, He raised it high, and He made the balance
اَلَّا تَطْغَوْا فِى الْمِيْزَانِ(8)
ALLAA TATGHAW FIL MEEZAAN.
That you may not be inordinate in respect of the measure.
وَاَقِيْمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا الْمِيْزَانَ(9)
WA AQEEMUL WAZNA BIL QISTE WA LAA TUKHSERUL MEEZAAN.
And keep up the balance with equity and do not make the measure deficient.
وَالْاَرْضَ وَضَعَهَا لِلْاَنَامِۙ(10)
WAL ARZA WA ZA-A’HAA LIL ANAAM.
And the earth, He has set it for living creatures;
فِيْهَا فَاكِهَةٌ ۙ وَّالنَّخْلُ ذَاتُ الْاَكْمَامِ ۖ(11)
FEEHAA FAAKEHATUNW WAN-NAKHLO ZAATUL AKMAAM.
Therein is fruit and palms having sheathed clusters,
وَالْحَبُّ ذُو الْعَصْفِ وَالرَّيْحَانُۚ(12)
WAL-HABBO ZUL-A’SFE WAR-RAYHAAN.
And the grain with (its) husk and fragrance.
فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ(13)
FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.
Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?
خَلَقَ الْاِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ كَالْفَخَّارِۙ(14)
KHALAQAL INSAANA MIN SALSAALIN KAL-FAKHKHAAR.
He created man from dry clay like earthen vessels,
وَخَلَقَ الْجَآنَّ مِنْ مَّارِجٍ مِّنْ نَّارٍۚ(15)
WA KHALAQAL JAAAN-NA MIN MAAREJIM MIN NAAR.
And He created the jinn of a flame of fire.
فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ(16)
FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.
Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?
رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقَيْنِ وَ رَبُّ الْمَغْرِبَيْنِۚ(17)
RABBUL MASHREQAYNE WA RABBUL MAGHREBAYN.
Lord of the East and Lord of the West.
فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ(18)
FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.
Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?
مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيٰنِۙ(19)
MARAJAL BAHRAYNE YALTAQEYAAN.
He has made the two seas to flow freely (so that) they meet together:
بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَّا يَبْغِيٰنِۚ(20)
BAYNAHOMAA BARZAKHUL LAA YABGHEYAAN.
Between them is a barrier which they cannot pass.
فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ(21)
FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.
Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?
يَخْرُجُ مِنْهُمَا اللُّؤْلُؤُ وَالْمَرْجَانُۚ(22)
YAKHROJO MINHOMAL LO-LO-O WAL MARJAAN.
There come forth from them pearls, both large and small.
فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ(23)
FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.
Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?
وَلَهُ الْجَوَارِ الْمُنْشَئٰتُ فِى الْبَحْرِ كَالْاَعْلَامِۚ(24)
WA LAHUL JAWAARIL MUNSHA-AATO FIL BAHRE KAL-A-A’LAAM.
And His are the ships reared aloft in the sea like mountains.
فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ(25)
FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.
Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?
كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ ۚ ۖ(26)
KULLO MAN A’LAYHAA FAANIN.
