55: al-Rahmaan الرحمن

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

اَلرَّحْمٰنُۙ‏(1)

AR-RAHMAAN.

The All-beneficent

عَلَّمَ الْقُرْاٰنَؕ‏(2)

A’LLAMAL QURAAN.

has taught the Quran.

خَلَقَ الْاِنْسَانَۙ‏(3)

KHALAQAL INSAAN.

He created man,

عَلَّمَهُ الْبَيَانَ‏(4)

A’LLAMAHUL BAYAAN.

[and] taught him articulate speech.

اَلشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ بِحُسْبَانٍ‏(5)

ASH-SHAMSO WAL-QAMARO BE HUSBAANIN.

The sun and the moon are [disposed] calculatedly,

وَّالنَّجْمُ وَالشَّجَرُ يَسْجُدٰنِ‏(6)

WAN-NAJMO WASH-SHAJARO YASJODAAN.

and the herb and the tree prostrate [to Allah].

وَالسَّمَآءَ رَفَعَهَا وَوَضَعَ الْمِيْزَانَۙ‏(7)

WAS-SAMAAA-A RAFA-A’HAA WA-WAZA-A’L MEEZAAN.

He raised the heaven high and set up the balance,

اَلَّا تَطْغَوْا فِى الْمِيْزَانِ‏(8)

ALLAA TATGHAW FIL MEEZAAN.

declaring, ‘Do not infringe the balance!

وَاَقِيْمُوا الْوَزْنَ بِالْقِسْطِ وَلَا تُخْسِرُوا الْمِيْزَانَ‏(9)

WA AQEEMUL WAZNA BIL QISTE WA LAA TUKHSERUL MEEZAAN.

Maintain the weights with justice, and do not shorten the balance!’

وَالْاَرْضَ وَضَعَهَا لِلْاَنَامِۙ‏(10)

WAL ARZA WA ZA-A’HAA LIL ANAAM.

And the earth—He laid it out for mankind.

فِيْهَا فَاكِهَةٌ  ۙ وَّالنَّخْلُ ذَاتُ الْاَكْمَامِ ۖ‏(11)

FEEHAA FAAKEHATUNW WAN-NAKHLO ZAATUL AKMAAM.

In it are fruits and date-palms with sheaths,

وَالْحَبُّ ذُو الْعَصْفِ وَالرَّيْحَانُۚ‏(12)

WAL-HABBO ZUL-A’SFE WAR-RAYHAAN.

grain with husk, and fragrant herbs.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(13)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

خَلَقَ الْاِنْسَانَ مِنْ صَلْصَالٍ كَالْفَخَّارِۙ‏(14)

KHALAQAL INSAANA MIN SALSAALIN KAL-FAKHKHAAR.

He created man out of dry clay, like the potter’s,

وَخَلَقَ الْجَآنَّ مِنْ مَّارِجٍ مِّنْ نَّارٍۚ‏(15)

WA KHALAQAL JAAAN-NA MIN MAAREJIM MIN NAAR.

and created the jinn out of a flame of a fire.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(16)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

رَبُّ الْمَشْرِقَيْنِ وَ رَبُّ الْمَغْرِبَيْنِۚ‏(17)

RABBUL MASHREQAYNE WA RABBUL MAGHREBAYN.

Lord of the two easts, and Lord of the two wests!

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(18)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

مَرَجَ الْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيٰنِۙ‏(19)

MARAJAL BAHRAYNE YALTAQEYAAN.

He merged the two seas, meeting each other.

بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لَّا يَبْغِيٰنِۚ‏(20)

BAYNAHOMAA BARZAKHUL LAA YABGHEYAAN.

There is a barrier between them, which they do not overstep.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(21)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

يَخْرُجُ مِنْهُمَا اللُّؤْلُؤُ وَالْمَرْجَانُۚ‏(22)

YAKHROJO MINHOMAL LO-LO-O WAL MARJAAN.

From them emerge the pearl and the coral.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(23)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

وَلَهُ الْجَوَارِ الْمُنْشَئٰتُ فِى الْبَحْرِ كَالْاَعْلَامِۚ‏(24)

WA LAHUL JAWAARIL MUNSHA-AATO FIL BAHRE KAL-A-A’LAAM.

His are the sailing ships on the sea [appearing] like landmarks.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(25)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ ۚ ۖ‏(26)

KULLO MAN A’LAYHAA FAANIN.

Everyone on it is ephemeral,

وَّيَبْقٰى وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلٰلِ وَالْاِكْرَامِۚ‏(27)

WA YABQAA WAJHO RABBEKA ZUL-JALAALE WAL-IKRAAM.

yet lasting is the majestic and munificent Face of your Lord.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(28)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

يَسْئَلُهٗ مَنْ فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِؕ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ هُوَ فِىْ شَاْنٍۚ‏(29)

YAS-ALOHU MAN FIS SAMAAWAATE WAL-ARZ, KULLA YAWMIN HOWA FEE SHAAN.

Everyone in the heavens and the earth asks Him. Every day He is engaged in some work.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(30)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

سَنَفْرُغُ لَكُمْ اَيُّهَ الثَّقَلٰنِۚ‏(31)

SANAFROGHO LAKUM AYYOHAS SAQALAAN.

Soon We shall make Ourselves unoccupied for you, O you notable two!

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(32)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

يٰمَعْشَرَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِ اِنِ اسْتَطَعْتُمْ اَنْ تَنْفُذُوْا مِنْ اَقْطَارِ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ فَانْفُذُوْاؕ لَا تَنْفُذُوْنَ اِلَّا بِسُلْطٰنٍۚ‏(33)

YAA MA’SHARAL JINNE WAL INSE ENIS TA-TA’TUM AN TANFOZOO MIN AQTAARIS SAMAAWAATE WAL ARZE FANFOZOO, LAA TANFOZOONA ILLAA BE SULTAAN.

O company of jinn and humans! If you can pass through the confines of the heavens and the earth, then do pass through. But you will not pass through except by an authority [from Allah].

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(34)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

يُرْسَلُ عَلَيْكُمَا شُوَاظٌ مِّنْ نَّارٍ ۙ وَّنُحَاسٌ فَلَا تَنْتَصِرٰنِۚ‏(35)

YURSALO A’LAYKOMAA SHOWAAZUM MIN NAARINW, WA NOHAASUN FALAA TANTASERAAN.

There will be unleashed upon you a flash of fire and a smoke; then you will not be able to help one another.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(36)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

فَاِذَا انْشَقَّتِ السَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ وَرْدَةً كَالدِّهَانِۚ‏(37)

FA-EZAN SHAQQATIS SAMAAA-O FA-KAANAT WARDATAN KAD-DEHAAN.

When the sky is split open, and turns crimson like tanned leather.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(38)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُسْئَلُ عَنْ ذَنْۢبِهٖۤ اِنْسٌ وَّلَا جَآنٌّۚ‏(39)

FA YAWMA-EZIL LAA YUS-ALO A’N ZANBEHI INSUNW WA LAA JAAAN.

On that day neither humans will be questioned about their sins nor jinn.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(40)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

يُعْرَفُ الْمُجْرِمُوْنَ بِسِيْمٰهُمْ فَيُؤْخَذُ بِالنَّوَاصِىْ وَ الْاَقْدَامِۚ‏(41)

YO’RAFUL MUJREMOONA BE SEEMAAHUM FA-YOO-KHAZO BIN NAWAASEE WAL AQDAAM.

The guilty will be recognized by their mark; so they will be seized by their forelocks and feet.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(42)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

هٰذِهٖ جَهَنَّمُ الَّتِىْ يُكَذِّبُ بِهَا الْمُجْرِمُوْنَۘ‏(43)

HAAZEHI JAHANNAMUL LATEE YOKAZZEBO BEHAL MUJREMOON.

‘This is the hell which the guilty would deny!’

يَطُوْفُوْنَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ حَمِيْمٍ اٰنٍۚ‏(44)

YATOOFOONA BAYNAHAA WA BAYNA HAMEEMIN AAN.

They shall circuit between it and boiling hot water.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(45)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهٖ جَنَّتٰنِۚ‏(46)

WA LEMAN KHAAFA MAQAAMA RABBEHI JANNATAAN.

For him who stands in awe of his Lord will be two gardens.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۙ‏(47)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

ذَوَاتَاۤ اَفْنَانٍۚ‏(48)

ZAWAATAA AFNAAN.

Both abounding in branches.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(49)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

فِيْهِمَا عَيْنٰنِ تَجْرِيٰنِۚ‏(50)

FEEHEMAA A’YNAANE TAJREYAAN.

In both of them will be two flowing springs.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(51)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAANE.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

فِيْهِمَا مِنْ كُلِّ فَاكِهَةٍ زَوْجٰنِۚ‏(52)

FEEHEMAA MIN KULLE FAAKEHATIN ZAWJAAN.

In both of them will be two kinds of every fruit.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(53)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

مُتَّكِئِيْنَ عَلٰى فُرُشٍۢ بَطَآئِنُهَا مِنْ اِسْتَبْرَقٍؕ وَجَنَی الْجَنَّتَيْنِ دَانٍۚ‏(54)

MUTTAKE-EENA A’LAA FOROSHIM BATAAA-ENOHAA MIN ISTABRAQIN, WA JANAL JANNATAYNE DAAN.

[They will be] reclining on beds lined with green silk. And the fruit of the two gardens will be near at hand.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(55)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

فِيْهِنَّ قٰصِرٰتُ الطَّرْفِۙ لَمْ يَطْمِثْهُنَّ اِنْسٌ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلَا جَآنٌّۚ‏(56)

FEEHINNA QAASERAATUT TARFE, LAM YATMISHUNNA INSUN QABLAHUM WALAA JAAAN.

In them are maidens of restrained glances, whom no human has touched before, nor jinn.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ ۚ‏(57)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

كَاَنَّهُنَّ الْيَاقُوْتُ وَالْمَرْجَانُۚ‏(58)

KA-ANNAHUNNAL YAAQOOTO WAL MARJAAN.

As though they were rubies and corals.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(59)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

هَلْ جَزَآءُ الْاِحْسَانِ اِلَّا الْاِحْسَانُۚ‏(60)

HAL JAZAAA-UL EHSAANE ILLAL EHSAAN.

Is the requital of goodness anything but goodness?

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(61)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

وَمِنْ دُوْنِهِمَا جَنَّتٰنِۚ‏(62)

WA MIN DOONEHEMAA JANNATAAN.

Beside these two, there will be two [other] gardens.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۙ‏(63)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

مُدْهَآمَّتٰنِۚ‏(64)

MUD-HAAMMATAAN.

Dark green.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ‏(65)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

فِيْهِمَا عَيْنٰنِ نَضَّاخَتٰنِۚ‏(66)

FEEHEMAA A’YNAANE NAZZAAKHATAAN.

In both of them will be two gushing springs.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(67)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

فِيْهِمَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَّنَخْلٌ وَّرُمَّانٌۚ‏(68)

FEEHEMAA FAAKEHATUNW WA NAKHLUNW WA RUMMAAN.

In both of them will be fruits, date-palms and pomegranates.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ‏(69)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

فِيْهِنَّ خَيْرٰتٌ حِسَانٌۚ‏(70)

FEEHINNA KHAYRAATUN HESAAN.

In them are maidens good and lovely.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ‏(71)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

حُوْرٌ مَّقْصُوْرٰتٌ فِى الْخِيَامِۚ‏(72)

HOORUM MAQSOORAATUN FIL KHEYAAM.

Houris secluded in pavilions.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ‏(73)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

لَمْ يَطْمِثْهُنَّ اِنْسٌ قَبْلَهُمْ وَلَا جَآنٌّۚ‏(74)

LAM YAT-MISHUNNA INSUN QABLAHUM WA LAA JAAAN.

Whom no human has touched before, nor jinn.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِۚ‏(75)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

مُتَّكِئِيْنَ عَلٰى رَفْرَفٍ خُضْرٍ وَّعَبْقَرِىٍّ حِسَانٍۚ‏(76)

MUTTAKE-EENA A’LAA RAFRAFIN KHUZRINW WA A’BQARIYYIN HESAAN.

Reclining on green cushions and lovely carpets.

فَبِاَىِّ اٰلَاۤءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبٰنِ‏(77)

FABE-AYYE AALAAA-E RABBEKOMAA TOKAZZEBAAN.

So which of your Lord’s bounties will you both deny?

تَبٰرَكَ اسْمُ رَبِّكَ ذِى الْجَلٰلِ وَالْاِكْرَامِ‏(78)

TABAARAKAS-MO RABBEKA ZIL JALAALE WAL IKRAAM.

Blessed is the Name of your Lord, the Majestic and the Munificent!
