Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

حٰمٓ‌ ۚ‏(1)

HAA-MEEM.

Ha, Meem.

تَنْزِيْلٌ مِّنَ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ‌ۚ‏(2)

TANZEELUM MENAR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

A [gradually] sent down [revelation] from the All-beneficent, the All-merciful,

كِتٰبٌ فُصِّلَتْ اٰيٰتُهٗ قُرْاٰنًا عَرَبِيًّا لِّقَوْمٍ يَّعْلَمُوْنَۙ‏(3)

KETAABUN FUSSELAT AAYAATOHU QURAANAN A’RABIYYAL LEQAWMIYN YA’LAMOON.

[this is] a Book whose signs have been elaborated for a people who have knowledge, an Arabic Quran,

بَشِيْرًا وَّنَذِيْرًا‌ ۚ فَاَعْرَضَ اَكْثَرُهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُوْنَ‏(4)

BASHEERAWN WA NAZEERAA, FA-A’RAZA AKSAROHUM FAHUM LAA YASMA-O’ON.

a bearer of good news and a warner. But most of them turn away [from it], [and] so they do not listen.

وَقَالُوْا قُلُوْبُنَا فِىْۤ اَكِنَّةٍ مِّمَّا تَدْعُوْنَاۤ اِلَيْهِ وَفِىْۤ اٰذَانِنَا وَقْرٌ وَّمِنْۢ بَيْنِنَا وَبَيْنِكَ حِجَابٌ فَاعْمَلْ اِنَّنَا عٰمِلُوْنَ‏(5)

WA QAALOO QOLOOBONAA FEE AKINNATIM MIMMAA TAD-O’ONAA EALYHE WA FEE AAZAANENAA WAQRUWN WA MIM BAYNENAA WA BAYNEKA HEJAABUN FA’MAL INNANAA A’AMELOON.

They say, ‘Our hearts are in veils [which shut them off] from what you invite us to, and there is a deafness in our ears, and there is a curtain between us and you. So act [as your faith requires]; we too are acting [according to our own].’

قُلْ اِنَّمَاۤ اَنَا بَشَرٌ مِّثْلُكُمْ يُوْحٰٓى اِلَىَّ اَنَّمَاۤ اِلٰهُكُمْ اِلٰهٌ وَّاحِدٌ فَاسْتَقِيْمُوْۤا اِلَيْهِ وَاسْتَغْفِرُوْهُ‌ ؕ وَوَيْلٌ لِّلْمُشْرِكِيْنَ ۙ‏(6)

QUL INNAMAA ANAA BASHARUM MISLOKUM YOOHAA ELAYYA ANNAMAA ELAAHOKUM ELAAHUWN WAAHEDUN FASTAQEEMOO ELAYHE WAS-TAGHFEROOH, WA WAYLUL LILMUSHREKEENAL.

Say, ‘I am just a human like you. It has been revealed to me that your God is the One God. So worship Him single-mindedly and plead to Him for forgiveness.’ And woe to the polytheists

الَّذِيْنَ لَا يُؤْتُوْنَ الزَّكٰوةَ وَهُمْ بِالْاٰخِرَةِ هُمْ كٰفِرُوْنَ‏(7)

LAZEENA LAA YOATOONAZ ZAKAATA WA HUM BIL AAKHERATE HUM KAAFEROON.

—those who do not pay the zakat and disbelieve in the Hereafter.

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَهُمْ اَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُوْنٍ‏(8)

INNAL LAZEENA AAMANOO WA A’MELUS SAALEHAATE LAHUM AJRUN GHAYRO MAMNOON.

As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, there will be an everlasting reward for them.

قُلْ اَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَكْفُرُوْنَ بِالَّذِىْ خَلَقَ الْاَرْضَ فِىْ يَوْمَيْنِ وَتَجْعَلُوْنَ لَهٗۤ اَنْدَادًا‌ؕ ذٰلِكَ رَبُّ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ‌ۚ‏(9)

QUL AINNAKUM LATAKFOROONA BIL-LAZEE KHALAQAL ARZA FEE YAWMAYNE WA TAJ-A’LOONA LAHU ANDAADAA, ZAALEKA RABBUL A’ALAMEEN.

Say, ‘Do you really disbelieve in Him who created the earth in two days, and ascribe partners to Him? That is the Lord of all the worlds!’

وَجَعَلَ فِيْهَا رَوَاسِىَ مِنْ فَوْقِهَا وَبٰرَكَ فِيْهَا وَقَدَّرَ فِيْهَاۤ اَقْوَاتَهَا فِىْۤ اَرْبَعَةِ اَيَّامٍؕ سَوَآءً لِّلسَّآئِلِيْنَ‏(10)

WA JA-A’LA FEEHAA AQWAATAHAA FEE ARBA-A’TE AYYAAM, SAWAAA-AL LIS-SAAELEEN.

He set in it firm mountains, [rising] above it, blessed it, and ordained in it, in four days, [various] means of sustenance, equally for all seekers.

ثُمَّ اسْتَوٰۤى اِلَى السَّمَآءِ وَهِىَ دُخَانٌ فَقَالَ لَهَا وَلِلْاَرْضِ ائْتِيَا طَوْعًا اَوْ كَرْهًا ؕ قَالَتَاۤ اَتَيْنَا طَآئِعِيْنَ‏(11)

SUMMAS TAWAA ELAS SAMAAA-E WA HEYA DOKHAANUN FAQAALA LAHAA WA LILARZEA TEYAA TAWA’N AW KARHAA, QAALATAA ATAYNAA TAAA-E-E’EN.

Then He turned to the heaven, and it was smoke, and He said to it and to the earth, ‘Come, willingly or unwillingly!’ They said, ‘We come obediently.’

فَقَضٰٮهُنَّ سَبْعَ سَمٰوَاتٍ فِىْ يَوْمَيْنِ وَاَوْحٰى فِىْ كُلِّ سَمَآءٍ اَمْرَهَا‌ ؕ وَزَ يَّنَّا السَّمَآءَ الدُّنْيَا بِمَصَابِيْحَ ‌ۖ  وَحِفْظًا ‌ؕ ذٰ لِكَ تَقْدِيْرُ الْعَزِيْزِ الْعَلِيْمِ‏(12)

FAQAZAAHUNNA SAB-A’ SAMAAWAATIN FEE YAWMAYNE WA AWHAA FEE KULLE SAMAAA-IN AMRAHAA, WA ZAYYANNAS SAMAAA-AD DUNYAA BEMASAABEEH, WA HIFZAA, ZAALEKA TAQDEERUL A’ZEEZIL A’LEEM.

Then He set them up as seven heavens in two days, and revealed [to the angels] in each heaven its ordinance. We have adorned the lowest heaven with lamps, and guarded them. That is the ordaining of the All-mighty, the All-knowing.

فَاِنْ اَعْرَضُوْا فَقُلْ اَنْذَرْتُكُمْ صٰعِقَةً مِّثْلَ صٰعِقَةِ عَادٍ وَّثَمُوْدَ ؕ‏(13)

FA-IN A-A’RAZOO FAQUL ANZARTOKUM SAA-E’QATAM MISLA SAA-E’QATE A’ADIWN WA SAMOOD.

But if they turn away, say, ‘I warn you of a thunderbolt, like the thunderbolt of ‘Ad and Thamud.’

اِذْ جَآءَتْهُمُ الرُّسُلُ مِنْۢ بَيْنِ اَيْدِيْهِمْ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ اَلَّا تَعْبُدُوْۤا اِلَّا اللّٰهَ‌ؕ قَالُوْا لَوْ شَآءَ رَبُّنَا لَاَنْزَلَ مَلٰٓئِكَةً فَاِنَّا بِمَاۤ اُرْسِلْتُمْ بِهٖ كٰفِرُوْنَ‏(14)

IZ JAAA-ATHOMUR ROSOLO MIM BAYNE AYDEEHIM WA MIN KHALFEHIM ALLAA TA’BODOO ILLAL LAAH, QAALOO LAW SHAAA-A RABBONAA LA-ANZALA MALAAA-EKATAN FAINNAA BEMAA URSILTUM BEHI KAAFEROON.

When the apostles came to them, before them and in their own time, saying, ‘Worship no one except Allah!’ They said, ‘Had our Lord wished, He would have sent down angels [to us]. We indeed disbelieve in what you have been sent with.’

فَاَمَّا عَادٌ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوْا فِى الْاَرْضِ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ وَقَالُوْا مَنْ اَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةً ‌ؕ اَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا اَنَّ اللّٰهَ الَّذِىْ خَلَقَهُمْ هُوَ اَشَدُّ مِنْهُمْ قُوَّةً ؕ وَكَانُوْا بِاٰيٰتِنَا يَجْحَدُوْنَ‏(15)

FA-AMMAA A’ADUN FASTAKBAROO FIL ARZE BEGHAYRIL HAQQE WA QAALOO MAN ASHADDO MINNAA QUWWAH, AWA LAM YARAW ANNAL LAAHAL LAZEE KHALAQAHUM HOWA ASHADDO MINHUM QUWWAH, WA KAANOO BEAAYAATENAA YAJHADOON.

As for [the people of] ‘Ad, they acted arrogantly in the earth unduly, and they said, ‘Who is more powerful than us?’ Did they not see that Allah, who created them, is more powerful than them? They used to impugn Our signs;

فَاَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيْحًا صَرْصَرًا فِىْۤ اَيَّامٍ نَّحِسَاتٍ لِّنُذِيْقَهُمْ عَذَابَ الْخِزْىِ فِى الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا‌ ؕ وَلَعَذَابُ الْاٰخِرَةِ اَخْزٰى‌ وَهُمْ لَا يُنْصَرُوْنَ‏(16)

FA-ARSALNAA A’LAYHIM REEHAN SARSARAN FEE AYYAAMIN NAHESAATIL LENOZEEQAHUM A’ZAABAL KHIZYE FIL HAYAATID DUNYAA, WA LA-A’ZAABUL AAKHERATE AKHZAA WA HUM LAA YUNSAROON.

so We unleashed upon them an icy gale during ill-fated days, in order that We might make them taste a humiliating punishment in the life of the world. Yet the punishment of the Hereafter will be surely more disgraceful, and they will not be helped.

وَاَمَّا ثَمُوْدُ فَهَدَيْنٰهُمْ فَاسْتَحَبُّوا الْعَمٰى عَلَى الْهُدٰى فَاَخَذَتْهُمْ صٰعِقَةُ الْعَذَابِ الْهُوْنِ بِمَا كَانُوْا يَكْسِبُوْنَ‌ۚ‏(17)

WA AMMAA SAMOODO FAHADAYNAAHUM FASTAHABBUL A’MAA A’LAL HODAA FA-AKHAZATHUM SAA-E’QATUL A’ZAABIL HOONE BEMAA KAANOO YAKSEBOON.

As for [the people of] Thamud, We guided them, but they preferred blindness to guidance. So the bolt of a humiliating punishment seized them because of what they used to earn.

وَ نَجَّيْنَا الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَكَانُوْا يَتَّقُوْنَ‏(18)

WA NAJJAYNAL LAZEENA AAMANOO WA KAANU YATTAQOON.

And We delivered those who had faith and were Godwary.

وَيَوْمَ يُحْشَرُ اَعْدَآءُ اللّٰهِ اِلَى النَّارِ فَهُمْ يُوْزَعُوْنَ‏(19)

WA YAWMA YOHSHARO A-A’DAAA-UL LAAHE ELAN NAARE FAHUM YOOZA-O’ON.

The day the enemies of Allah are marched out toward the Fire, while they are in check,

حَتّٰٓى اِذَا مَا جَآءُوْهَا شَهِدَ عَلَيْهِمْ سَمْعُهُمْ وَاَبْصَارُهُمْ وَجُلُوْدُهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ‏(20)

HATTAA IZAA MAA JAAA-OOHAA SHAHEDA A’LAYHIM SAM-O’HUM WA ABSAAROHUM WA JOLOODOHUM BEMAA KAANOO YA’MALOON.

when they come to it, their hearing, their eyes and their skins will bear witness against them concerning what they used to do.

وَقَالُوْا لِجُلُوْدِهِمْ لِمَ شَهِدْتُّمْ عَلَيْنَا‌ ؕ قَالُوْۤا اَنْطَقَنَا اللّٰهُ الَّذِىْۤ اَنْطَقَ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ وَّهُوَ خَلَقَكُمْ اَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَّاِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُوْنَ‏(21)

WA QAALOO LEJOLOODEHIM LEMA SHAHIT-TUM A’LAYNAA, QAALOO ANTAQANAL LAAHUL LAZEE ANTAQA KULLA SHAY-IWN WA HOWA KHALAQAKUM AWWALA MARRATIWN WA ELAYHE TURJA-O’ON.

They will say to their skins, ‘Why did you bear witness against us?’ They will say, ‘We were given speech by Allah, who gave speech to all things. He created you the first time, and you are being brought back to Him.

وَمَا كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَتِرُوْنَ اَنْ يَّشْهَدَ عَلَيْكُمْ سَمْعُكُمْ وَلَاۤ اَبْصَارُكُمْ وَلَا جُلُوْدُكُمْ وَلٰكِنْ ظَنَنْتُمْ اَنَّ اللّٰهَ لَا يَعْلَمُ كَثِيْرًا مِّمَّا تَعْمَلُوْنَ‏(22)

WA MAA KUNTUM TASTATEROONA AYN YASHHADA A’LAYKUM SAM-O’KUM WA LAA ABSAAROKUM WA LAA JOLOODOKUM WA LAAKIN ZANANTUM ANNAL LAAHA LAA YA’LAMO KASEERAM MIMMA TA’MALOON.

You did not use to conceal yourselves [while perpetrating sinful acts] lest your hearing, your eyes, or your skins should bear witness against you, but you thought that Allah did not know most of what you did.

وَذٰلِكُمْ ظَنُّكُمُ الَّذِىْ ظَنَنْتُمْ بِرَبِّكُمْ اَرْدٰٮكُمْ فَاَصْبَحْتُمْ مِّنَ الْخٰسِرِيْنَ‏(23)

WA ZAALEKUM ZANNOKOMUL LAZEE ZANANTUM BERABBEKUM ARDAAKUM FA-ASBAHTUM MENAL KHAASEREEN.

That misjudgement, which you entertained about your Lord ruined you. So you became losers.’

فَاِنْ يَّصْبِرُوْا فَالنَّارُ مَثْوًى لَّهُمْ‌ؕ وَاِنْ يَّسْتَعْتِبُوْا فَمَا هُمْ مِّنَ الْمُعْتَبِيْنَ‏(24)

FAIYN YASBEROO FANNAARO MASWAL LAHUM, WA IYN YASTA’TEBOO FAMAA HUM MENAL MOA’TABEEN.

Should they be patient, the Fire is their abode; and should they seek to propitiate [Allah], they will not be redeemed.

وَقَيَّضْنَا لَهُمْ قُرَنَآءَ فَزَيَّنُوْا لَهُمْ مَّا بَيْنَ اَيْدِيْهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ وَحَقَّ عَلَيْهِمُ الْقَوْلُ فِىْۤ اُمَمٍ قَدْ خَلَتْ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِ‌ۚ اِنَّهُمْ كَانُوْا خٰسِرِيْنَ‏(25)

WA QAYYAZNAA LAHUM QORANAAA-A FA-ZAYYANOO LAHUM MAA BAYNA AYDEEHIM WA MAA KHALFAHUM WA HAQQA A’LAYHEMUL QAWLO FEE OMAMIN QAD KHALAT MIN QABLEHIM MENAL JINNE WAL-INS, INNAHUM KAANOO KHAASEREEN.

We have assigned them companions who make their present [conduct] and future [state] seem decorous to them, and the word became due against them along with the nations of jinn and humans that passed away before them. They were indeed losers.

وَقَالَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا لَا تَسْمَعُوْا لِهٰذَا الْقُرْاٰنِ وَالْغَوْا فِيْهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَغْلِبُوْنَ‏(26)

WA QAALAL LAZEENA KAFAROO LAA TASMA-O’O LEHAAZAL QUR-AANE WAL GHAW FEEHE LA-A’LLAKUM TAGHLEBOON.

The faithless say, ‘Do not listen to this Quran and hoot it down so that you may prevail [over the Apostle].’

فَلَنُذِيْقَنَّ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا عَذَابًا شَدِيْدًاۙ وَّلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ اَسْوَاَ الَّذِىْ كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ‏(27)

FALANOZEEQANNAL LAZEENA KAFAROO A’ZAABAN SHADEEDAWN WA LANAJZEYANNAHUM ASWA-AL LAZEE KAANOO YA’MALOON.

We will surely make the faithless taste a severe punishment, and We will surely requite them by the worst of what they used to do.

ذٰ لِكَ جَزَآءُ اَعْدَآءِ اللّٰهِ النَّارُ‌ ۚ لَهُمْ فِيْهَا دَارُ الْخُلْدِ‌ ؕ جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوْا بِاٰيٰتِنَا يَجْحَدُوْنَ‏(28)

ZAALEKA JAZAAA-O A-A’DAAA-IL LAAHIN NAAR, LAHUM FEEHAA DAARUL KHULD, JAZAAA-AM BEMAA KAANOO BE-AAYAATENAA YAJHADOON.

That is the requital of the enemies of Allah—the Fire! In it, they will have an everlasting abode, as a requital for their impugning Our signs.

وَقَالَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا رَبَّنَاۤ اَرِنَا الَّذَيْنِ اَضَلّٰنَا مِنَ الْجِنِّ وَالْاِنْسِ نَجْعَلْهُمَا تَحْتَ اَقْدَامِنَا لِيَكُوْنَا مِنَ الْاَسْفَلِيْنَ‏(29)

WA QAALAL LAZEENA KAFAROO RABBANAA ARENAL LAZEENA AZALLAANAA MENAL JINNE WAL INSE NAJ-A’LHOMAA TAHTA AQDAAMENAA LEYAKOONA MENAL ASFALEEN.

The faithless will say, ‘Our Lord! Show us those who led us astray from among jinn and humans so that we may trample them under our feet, so that they may be among the lowermost!’

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ قَالُوْا رَبُّنَا اللّٰهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقَامُوْا تَتَنَزَّلُ عَلَيْهِمُ الْمَلٰٓئِكَةُ اَلَّا تَخَافُوْا وَلَا تَحْزَنُوْا وَاَبْشِرُوْا بِالْجَنَّةِ الَّتِىْ كُنْتُمْ تُوْعَدُوْنَ‏(30)

INNAL LAZEENA QAALOO RABBONAL LAAHO SUMMAS-TAQAAMOO TATANAZZALO A’LAYHEMUL MALAAA-EKATO ALLAA TAKHAAFOO WA LAA TAHZANOO WA ABSHEROO BIL-JANNATIL LATEE KUNTUM TOO-A’DOON.

Indeed those who say, ‘Our Lord is Allah!’ and then remain steadfast, the angels descend upon them, [saying,] ‘Do not fear, nor be grieved! Receive the good news of the paradise, which you have been promised.

نَحْنُ اَوْلِيٰٓؤُکُمْ فِى الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِى الْاٰخِرَةِ ۚ وَلَكُمْ فِيْهَا مَا تَشْتَهِىْۤ اَنْفُسُكُمْ وَلَكُمْ فِيْهَا مَا تَدَّعُوْنَ ؕ‏(31)

NAHNO AWLEYAAA-OKUM FIL HAYAATID DUNYAA WA FIL AAKHERAH, WA LAKUM FEEHAA MAA TASHTAHEE ANFOSOKUM WA LAKUM FEEHAA MAA TADDA-O’ON.

We are your friends in the life of this world and in the Hereafter, and you will have in it whatever your souls desire, and you will have in it whatever you ask for,

نُزُلًا مِّنْ غَفُوْرٍ رَّحِيْمٍ‏(32)

NOZOLAM MIN GHAFOORIR RAHEEM.

as a hospitality from One all-forgiving, all-merciful.’

وَمَنْ اَحْسَنُ قَوْلًا مِّمَّنْ دَعَاۤ اِلَى اللّٰهِ وَعَمِلَ صَالِحًا وَّقَالَ اِنَّنِىْ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِيْنَ‏(33)

WA MAN AHSANO QAWLAM MIMMAA DA-A’A ELAL LAAHE WA A’MELA SAALEHAWN WA QAALA INNANEE MENAL MUSLEMEEN.

Who has a better call than him who summons to Allah and acts righteously and says, ‘Indeed I am one of the Muslims’?

وَلَا تَسْتَوِى الْحَسَنَةُ وَ لَا السَّيِّئَةُ ؕ اِدْفَعْ بِالَّتِىْ هِىَ اَحْسَنُ فَاِذَا الَّذِىْ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهٗ عَدَاوَةٌ كَاَنَّهٗ وَلِىٌّ حَمِيْمٌ‏(34)

WA LAA TASTAWIL HASANATO WA LASSAYYEAH, IDFA’ BILLATEE HEYA AHSANO FA-IZAL LAZEE BAYNAKA WA BAYNAHU A’DAAWATUN KA-ANNAHU WALIYYUN HAMEEM.

Good and evil [conduct] are not equal. Repel [evil] with what is best. [If you do so,] he between whom and you was enmity, will then be as though he were a sympathetic friend.

وَمَا يُلَقّٰٮهَاۤ اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ صَبَرُوْا‌ۚ وَمَا يُلَقّٰٮهَاۤ اِلَّا ذُوْ حَظٍّ عَظِيْمٍ‏(35)

WA MAA YOLAQQAAHAA ILLAL LAZEENA SABAROO, WA MAA YOLAQQAAHAA ILLAA ZOO HAZZIN A’ZEEM.

But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except the greatly endowed.

وَاِمَّا يَنْزَغَنَّكَ مِنَ الشَّيْطٰنِ نَزْغٌ فَاسْتَعِذْ بِاللّٰهِ‌ؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ السَّمِيْعُ الْعَلِيْمُ‏(36)

WA AMMAA YANZAGHANNAKA MENASH SHAYTAANE NAZGHUN FAS-TA-I’Z BILLAAH, INNAHU HOWAS SAMEE-U’L A’LEEM.

Should an incitement from Satan prompt you [to ill feeling], seek the protection of Allah. Indeed, He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.

وَمِنْ اٰيٰتِهِ الَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ وَالشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ‌ؕ لَا تَسْجُدُوْا لِلشَّمْسِ وَلَا لِلْقَمَرِ وَاسْجُدُوْا لِلّٰهِ الَّذِىْ خَلَقَهُنَّ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ اِيَّاهُ تَعْبُدُوْنَ‏(37)

WA MIN AAYAATEHIL LAYLO WAN NAHAARO????

Among His signs are night and day, and the sun and the moon. Do not prostrate to the sun, nor to the moon, but prostrate to Allah who created them, if it is Him that you worship.

فَاِنِ اسْتَكْبَرُوْا فَالَّذِيْنَ عِنْدَ رَبِّكَ يُسَبِّحُوْنَ لَهٗ بِالَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ وَهُمْ لَا يَسْئَمُوْنَ۩‏(38)

38:

But if they disdain [the worship of Allah], those who are near your Lord glorify Him night and day, and they are not wearied.

وَمِنْ اٰيٰتِهٖۤ اَنَّكَ تَرَى الْاَرْضَ خَاشِعَةً فَاِذَاۤ اَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْهَا الْمَآءَ اهْتَزَّتْ وَرَبَتْ‌ؕ اِنَّ الَّذِىْۤ اَحْيَاهَا لَمُحْىِ الْمَوْتٰى ؕ اِنَّهٗ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ‏(39)

WA MIN AAYAATEHI ANNAKA TARAL ARZA KHAASHEA’TAN FA-EZAA ANZALNAA A’LAYHAL MAAA-AH TAZZAT WA RABAT, INNAL LAZEE AHYAAHAA LAMOHYIL MAWTAA, INNAHU A’LAA KULLE SHAYIN QADEER.

Among His signs, is that you see the earth desolate; but when We send down water upon it, it stirs and swells. Indeed, He who revives it will also revive the dead. Indeed, He has power over all things.

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ يُلْحِدُوْنَ فِىْۤ اٰيٰتِنَا لَا يَخْفَوْنَ عَلَيْنَا ؕ اَفَمَنْ يُّلْقٰى فِى النَّارِ خَيْرٌ اَمْ مَّنْ يَّاْتِىْۤ اٰمِنًا يَّوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ‌ ؕ اِعْمَلُوْا مَا شِئْتُمْ‌ ۙ اِنَّهٗ بِمَا تَعْمَلُوْنَ بَصِيْرٌ‏(40)

INNAL LAZEENA YULHEDOONA FEE AAYAATENAA LAA YAKHFAWNA A’LAYNAA, AFAMAYN YULQAA FIN NAARE KHAYRUN AM MAYN YAATEE AAMENAYN YAWMAL QEYAAMAH, EA’MALOO MAA SHEATUM, INNAHU BEMAA TA’MALOONA BASEER.

Those who abuse Our signs are not hidden from Us. Is someone who is cast in the Fire better off, or someone who arrives safely on the Day of Resurrection? Act as you wish; indeed He watches what you do.

اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِالذِّكْرِ لَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ‌ۚ وَاِنَّهٗ لَكِتٰبٌ عَزِيْزٌۙ‏(41)

INNAL LAZEENA KAFAROO BIZ-ZIKRE LAMMAA JAAA-AHUM, WA INNAHU LAKETAABUN A’ZEEZUL.

Those who reject the Reminder when it comes to them... Indeed, it is an august Book:

لَّا يَاْتِيْهِ الْبَاطِلُ مِنْۢ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَلَا مِنْ خَلْفِهٖ‌ؕ تَنْزِيْلٌ مِّنْ حَكِيْمٍ حَمِيْدٍ‏(42)

LAA YAATEEHIL BAATELO MIM BAYNE YADAYHE WA LAA MIN KHALFEH, TANZEELUM MIN HAKEEMIN HAMEED.

falsehood cannot approach it, at present or in future, a [revelation gradually] sent down from One all-wise, all-laudable.

مَا يُقَالُ لَكَ اِلَّا مَا قَدْ قِيْلَ لِلرُّسُلِ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ ‌ؕ اِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَذُوْ مَغْفِرَةٍ وَّذُوْ عِقَابٍ اَ لِيْمٍ‏(43)

MAA YOQAALO LAKA ILLAA MAA QAD QEELA LIR-ROSOLE MIN QABLEK, INNA RABBEKA LA-ZOO MAGHFERATIWN WA ZOO E’QAABIN ALEEM.

Nothing is said to you except what has already been said to the apostles before you. Indeed your Lord is One who forgives and also metes out a painful retribution.

وَلَوْ جَعَلْنٰهُ قُرْاٰنًا اَعْجَمِيًّا لَّقَالُوْا لَوْلَا فُصِّلَتْ اٰيٰتُهٗ ؕ ءَؔاَعْجَمِىٌّ وَّعَرَبِىٌّ‌ ؕ قُلْ هُوَ لِلَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا هُدًى وَشِفَآءٌ‌ ؕ وَ الَّذِيْنَ لَا يُؤْمِنُوْنَ فِىْۤ اٰذَانِهِمْ وَقْرٌ وَّهُوَ عَلَيْهِمْ عَمًى‌ ؕ اُولٰٓئِكَ يُنَادَوْنَ مِنْ مَّكَانٍۢ بَعِيْدٍ‏(44)

WA LAW JA-A’LNAAHO QURAANAN A-A’JAMIYYAL LAQAALOO LAWLAA FUSSELAT AAYAATOH, A-AA’JAMIYYUWN WA A’RABEE, QUL HOWA LILLAZEENA AAMANOO HODAWN WA SHEFAAA, WAL LAZEENA LAA YOAMENOONA FEE AAZAANEHIM WAQRUWN WA HOWA A’LAYHIM A’MA, OOLAAA-EKA YONAADAWNA MIM MAKAANIM BA-E’ED.

Had We made it a non-Arabic Quran, they would have said, ‘Why have not its signs been articulated?’ ‘What! A non-Arabian [scripture] and an Arabian [prophet]!?’ Say, ‘It is guidance and healing for those who have faith. As for those who are faithless, there is a deafness in their ears and it is lost to their sight: [to them it is as if] they were called from a distant place.’

وَلَقَدْ اٰتَيْنَا مُوْسَى الْكِتٰبَ فَاخْتُلِفَ فِيْهِ‌ؕ وَلَوْلَا كَلِمَةٌ سَبَقَتْ مِنْ رَّبِّكَ لَقُضِىَ بَيْنَهُمْ‌ؕ وَاِنَّهُمْ لَفِىْ شَكٍّ مِّنْهُ مُرِيْبٍ‏(45)

WA LAQAD AATAYNAA MOOSAL KETAABA FAKHTOLEFA FEEH, WA LAWLAA KALEMATUN SABAQAT MIR RABBEKA LAQOZEYA BAYNAHUM, WA INNAHUM LAFEE SHAKKIM MINHO MOREEB.

Certainly We gave Moses the Book, but differences arose about it; and were it not for a prior decree of your Lord, judgement would have been made between them, for they are in grave doubt concerning it.

مَنْ عَمِلَ صَالِحًا فَلِنَفْسِهٖ‌ وَمَنْ اَسَآءَ فَعَلَيْهَا‌ؕ وَمَا رَبُّكَ بِظَلَّامٍ لِّلْعَبِيْدِ‏(46)

MAN A’MELA SAALEHAN FALENAFSEH, WA MAN ASAAA-A FA-A’LAYHAA, WA MAA RABBOKA BEZALLAAMIL LIL-A’BEED.

Whoever acts righteously, it is for [the benefit of] his own soul, and whoever does evil, it is to its detriment, and your Lord is not tyrannical to His servants.

اِلَيْهِ يُرَدُّ عِلْمُ السَّاعَةِ‌ؕ وَمَا تَخْرُجُ مِنْ ثَمَرٰتٍ مِّنْ اَكْمَامِهَا وَمَا تَحْمِلُ مِنْ اُنْثٰى وَلَا تَضَعُ اِلَّا بِعِلْمِهٖ‌ؕ وَيَوْمَ يُنَادِيْهِمْ اَيْنَ شُرَكَآءِىْۙ قَالُوْۤا اٰذَنّٰكَۙ مَا مِنَّا مِنْ شَهِيْدٍ‌ۚ‏(47)

ELAYHE YORADDO I’LMUS SAA-A’H, WA MAA TAKHROJO MIN SAMARAATIM MIN AKMAAMEHAA WA MAA TAHMELO MIN UNSAA WA LAA TAZAA-O’ ILLAA BE-I’LMEH, WA YAWMA YONAADEEHIM AYNA SHORAKAAA-EE, QAALOO AAZANNAKA MAA MINNAA MIN SHAHEED.

On Him devolves the knowledge of the Hour, and no fruit emerges from its covering and no female conceives or delivers except with His knowledge. On the day when He will call out to them, ‘Where are My ‘partners’?’ They will say, ‘We informed You that there is no witness amongst us.’

وَضَلَّ عَنْهُمْ مَّا كَانُوْا يَدْعُوْنَ مِنْ قَبْلُ‌ وَظَنُّوْا مَا لَهُمْ مِّنْ مَّحِيْصٍ‏(48)

WA ZALLA A’NHUM MAA KAANOO YADOONA MIN QABLO WA ZANNOO MAA LAHUM MIM MAHEES.

What they used to invoke before has forsaken them, and they know there is no escape for them.

لَا يَسْئَمُ الْاِنْسَانُ مِنْ دُعَآءِ الْخَيْرِ وَاِنْ مَّسَّهُ الشَّرُّ فَيَئُوْسٌ قَنُوْطٌ‏(49)

LAA YAS-AMUL INSAANO MIN DO-A’AA-IL KHAYR, WA IM MASSAHUSH SHARRO FAYAOOSUN QANOOT.

Man is never wearied of supplicating for good, and should any ill befall him, he becomes hopeless and despondent.

وَلَئِنْ اَذَقْنٰهُ رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا مِنْۢ بَعْدِ ضَرَّآءَ مَسَّتْهُ لَيَقُوْلَنَّ هٰذَا لِىْ ۙ وَمَاۤ اَظُنُّ السَّاعَةَ قَآئِمَةً ۙ وَّلَئِنْ رُّجِعْتُ اِلٰى رَبِّىْۤ اِنَّ لِىْ عِنْدَهٗ لَلْحُسْنٰى‌ ۚ فَلَنُنَبِّئَنَّ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِمَا عَمِلُوْا وَلَنُذِيْقَنَّهُمْ مِّنْ عَذَابٍ غَلِيْظٍ‏(50)

WA LA-IN AZAQNAAHO RAHMATAM MINNAA MIM BA’DE ZARAAA-A MASSATHO LAYAQOOLANNA HAAZAA LEE, WA MAA AZUNNUS SAA-A’TA QAAA-EMATAWN, WA LA-IR ROJE’TO ELAA RABBEE INNA LEE I’NDAHU LAL-HUSNAA, FALANONABBE-ANNAL LAZEENA KAFAROO BEMAA A’MELOO, WA LANOZEEQANNAHUM MIN A’ZAABIN GHALEEZ.

If, after distress has befallen him, We let him have a taste of Our mercy, he says, ‘This is my due! I do not think the Hour will ever come, and in case I am returned to my Lord, I will indeed have the best [reward] with Him.’ So We will surely inform the faithless about what they have done, and will surely make them taste a harsh punishment.

وَاِذَاۤ اَنْعَمْنَا عَلَى الْاِنْسَانِ اَعْرَضَ وَنَاٰ بِجَانِبِهٖ‌ۚ وَاِذَا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ فَذُوْ دُعَآءٍ عَرِيْضٍ‏(51)

WA EZAA AN-A’MNAA A’LAL INSAANE A-A’RAZA WA NA-AA BEJAANEBEH, WA EZAA MASSAHUSH SHARRO FAZOO DO-A’AA-IN A’REEZ.

When We bless man, he is disregardful and turns aside; but when an ill befalls him, he makes protracted supplications.

قُلْ اَرَءَيْتُمْ اِنْ كَانَ مِنْ عِنْدِ اللّٰهِ ثُمَّ كَفَرْتُمْ بِهٖ مَنْ اَضَلُّ مِمَّنْ هُوَ فِىْ شِقَاقٍۢ بَعِيْدٍ‏(52)

QUL ARA-AYTUM IN KAANA MIN I’NDIL LAAHE SUMMA KAFARTUM BEHI MAN AZALLO MIMMAN HOWA FEE SHEQAAQIM BA-E’ED.

Say, ‘Tell me, if it is from Allah and you disbelieve in it, who will be more astray than those who are in extreme defiance.’

سَنُرِيْهِمْ اٰيٰتِنَا فِى الْاٰفَاقِ وَفِىْۤ اَنْفُسِهِمْ حَتّٰى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَهُمْ اَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ‌ ؕ اَوَلَمْ يَكْفِ بِرَبِّكَ اَنَّهٗ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ شَهِيْدٌ‏(53)

SANOREEHIM AAYAATENAA FIL AAFAAQE WA FEE ANFOSEHIM HATTAA YATABAYYANA LAHUM ANNAHUL HAQ, AWA LAM YAKFE BERABBEKA ANNAHU A’LAA KULLE SHAY-IN SHAHEED.

Soon We shall show them Our signs in the horizons and in their own souls until it becomes clear to them that He is the Real. Is it not sufficient that your Lord is witness to all things?

اَلَاۤ اِنَّهُمْ فِىْ مِرْيَةٍ مِّنْ لِّقَآءِ رَبِّهِمْ‌ؕ اَلَاۤ اِنَّهٗ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ مُّحِيْطٌ‏(54)

ALAA INNAHUM FEE MIRYATIM MIL LEQAAA-E RABBEHIM, ALAA INNAHU BEKULLE SHAY-IM MOHEET.

Indeed, they are in doubt about the encounter with their Lord! Indeed, He embraces all things!
