29: al-Ankaboot العنكبوت

Text and Translation

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ

BISMIL LAAHIR RAHMAANIR RAHEEM

In the Name of Allah, the All-beneficent, the All-merciful

الٓمّٓ‌ ۚ‏(1)

ALIF LAAAM MEEM.

Alif, Lam, Meem.

اَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ اَنْ يُّتْرَكُوْۤا اَنْ يَّقُوْلُوْۤا اٰمَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُوْنَ‏(2)

A-HASEBAN NAASO ANY YUTRAKOO ANY YAQOOLOO AAMAANNAA WA HUM LAA YUFTANOON.

Do the people suppose that they will be let off because they say, ‘We have faith,’ and they will not be tested?

وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا الَّذِيْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ‌ فَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللّٰهُ الَّذِيْنَ صَدَقُوْا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْكٰذِبِيْنَ‏(3)

WA LAQAD FATANNAL LAZEENA MIN QABLEHIM FA-LA-YA’LAMANNAL LAAHUL LAZEENA SADAQOO WA LA-YA’LAMANNAL KAAZEBEEN.

Certainly We tested those who were before them. So Allah shall surely ascertain those who are truthful, and He shall surely ascertain the liars.

اَمْ حَسِبَ الَّذِيْنَ يَعْمَلُوْنَ السَّيِّاٰتِ اَنْ يَّسْبِقُوْنَا‌ ؕ سَآءَ مَا يَحْكُمُوْنَ‏(4)

AM HASEBAL LAZEENA YA’MALOONAS SAYYEAATE ANY YASBEQOONAA, SAAA-A MAA YAHKOMOON.

Do those who commit misdeeds suppose that they can outmaneuver Us? Evil is the judgement that they make.

مَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُوْا لِقَآءَ اللّٰهِ فَاِنَّ اَجَلَ اللّٰهِ لَاٰتٍ‌ؕ وَهُوَ السَّمِيْعُ الْعَلِيْمُ‏(5)

MAN KAANA YARJOO LE-QAAA-AL LAAHE FA-INNA AJALAL LAAHE LA-AAT, WA HOWAS SAMEE-U’L A’LEEM.

Whoever expects to encounter Allah [should know that] Allah’s [appointed] time will indeed come, and He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.

وَمَنْ جَاهَدَ فَاِنَّمَا يُجَاهِدُ لِنَفْسِهٖؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَغَنِىٌّ عَنِ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ‏(6)

WA MAN JAAHADA FA-INNAMAA YOJAAHEDO LE-NAFSEH, INNAL LAAHA LA-GHANIYYUN A’NIL A’ALAMEEN.

Whoever strives, strives only for his own sake. Indeed Allah has no need of the creatures.

وَالَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَنُكَفِّرَنَّ عَنْهُمْ سَيِّاٰتِهِمْ وَلَنَجْزِيَنَّهُمْ اَحْسَنَ الَّذِىْ كَانُوْا يَعْمَلُوْنَ‏(7)

WAL LAZEENA AAMANOO WA A’MELUS SAALEHAATE LA-NOKAFFERANNA A’NHUM SAYYEAATEHIM WA LANAJZEYANNAHUM AHSANAL LAZEE KAANOO YA’MALOON.

As for those who have faith and do righteous deeds, We will absolve them of their misdeeds and We will surely reward them by the best of what they used to do.

وَوَصَّيْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ بِوَالِدَيْهِ حُسْنًا‌ ؕ وَاِنْ جَاهَدٰكَ لِتُشْرِكَ بِىْ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهٖ عِلْمٌ فَلَا تُطِعْهُمَا ؕ اِلَىَّ مَرْجِعُكُمْ فَاُنَبِّئُكُمْ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَ‏(8)

WA WASSAYNAL INSAANA BE-WAALEDAYHE HUSNAA, WA IN JAAHADAAKA LE-TUSHREKA BEE MAA LAYSA LAKA BEHI I’LMUN FALAA TO-TE’HOMAA, ELAYYA MARJE-O’KUM FA-ONABBE-OKUM BEMAA KUNTUM TA’MALOON.

We have enjoined man to be good to his parents. But if they urge you to ascribe to Me as partner that of which you have no knowledge, then do not obey them. To Me will be your return, whereat I will inform you concerning what you used to do.

وَالَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَعَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَنُدْخِلَنَّهُمْ فِى الصّٰلِحِيْنَ‏(9)

WAL LAZEENA AAMANOO WA A’MELUS SAALEHAATE LANUDKHELANNAHUM FIS SAALEHEEN.

Those who have faith and do righteous deeds, We will surely admit them among the righteous.

وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَّقُوْلُ اٰمَنَّا بِاللّٰهِ فَاِذَاۤ اُوْذِىَ فِى اللّٰهِ جَعَلَ فِتْنَةَ النَّاسِ كَعَذَابِ اللّٰهِؕ وَلَئِنْ جَآءَ نَصْرٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّكَ لَيَقُوْلُنَّ اِنَّا كُنَّا مَعَكُمْ‌ؕ اَوَلَيْسَ اللّٰهُ بِاَعْلَمَ بِمَا فِىْ صُدُوْرِ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ‏(10)

WA MENAN NAASE MANY YAQOOLO AAMANNAA BIL LAAHE FA-EZAA OOZEYA FIL LAAHE JA-A’LA FITNATAN NAASE KA-A’ZAABIL LAAH, WA LAIN JAAA-A NASRUM MIR RABBEKA LA-YAQOOLUNNA INNAA KUNNAA MA-A’KUM, AWA LAYSAL LAAHO BE-A’ALAMA BEMAA FEE SODOORIL A’ALAMEEN.

Among the people there are those who say, ‘We have faith in Allah,’ but if such a one is tormented in Allah’s cause, he takes persecution by the people for Allah’s punishment. Yet if there comes any help from your Lord, they will say, ‘We were indeed with you.’ Does not Allah know best what is in the breasts of the creatures?

وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ اللّٰهُ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَلَيَعْلَمَنَّ الْمُنٰفِقِيْنَ‏(11)

WA LA-YA’LAMANAL LAAHUL LAZEENA AAMANOO WA LA-YA’LAMANNAL MONAAFEQEEN.

Allah shall surely ascertain those who have faith, and He shall surely ascertain the hypocrites.

وَقَالَ الَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا لِلَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوا اتَّبِعُوْا سَبِيْلَنَا وَلْنَحْمِلْ خَطٰيٰكُمْ ؕ وَمَا هُمْ بِحٰمِلِيْنَ مِنْ خَطٰيٰهُمْ مِّنْ شَىْءٍ‌ؕ اِنَّهُمْ لَكٰذِبُوْنَ‏(12)

WA QAALAL LAZEENA KAFAROO LIL-LAZEENA AAMANUT TABE-O’O SABEELANAA WAL NAHMIL KHATAAYAAKUM, WA MAA HUM BE-HAAMELEENA MIN KHATAAYAAHUM MIN SHAY, INNAHUM LA-KAAZEBOON.

The faithless say to the faithful, ‘Follow our way and we will bear [responsibility for] your iniquities.’ They will not bear anything of their iniquities. They are indeed liars.

وَلَيَحْمِلُنَّ اَ ثْقَالَهُمْ وَاَ ثْقَالًا مَّعَ اَثْقَالِهِمْ‌ وَلَيُسْئَلُنَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ عَمَّا كَانُوْا يَفْتَرُوْنَ‏(13)

WA LAYAHMELUNNA ASQAALAHUM WA ASQAALAM MA-A’ ASQAALEHIM, WA LA-YUS-ALUNNA YAWMAL QEYAAMATE A’MMAA KAANOO YAFTAROON.

But they will carry their own burdens and other burdens along with their own burdens, and they will surely be questioned on the Day of Resurrection concerning that which they used to fabricate.

وَلَقَدْ اَرْسَلْنَا نُوْحًا اِلٰى قَوْمِهٖ فَلَبِثَ فِيْهِمْ اَ لْفَ سَنَةٍ اِلَّا خَمْسِيْنَ عَامًا ؕ فَاَخَذَهُمُ الطُّوْفَانُ وَهُمْ ظٰلِمُوْنَ‏(14)

WA LAQAD ARSALNAA NOOHAN ELAA QAWMEHI FALABESA FEEHIM ALFA SANATIN ILLAA KHAMSEENA A’AMAA, FA-AKHAZNAAHOMUT TOOFAANO WA HUM ZAALEMOON.

Certainly We sent Noah to his people, and he remained with them for a thousand-less-fifty years. Then the flood overtook them while they were wrongdoers.

فَاَنْجَيْنٰهُ وَاَصْحٰبَ السَّفِيْنَةِ وَجَعَلْنٰهَاۤ اٰيَةً لِّلْعٰلَمِيْنَ‏(15)

FA-ANJAYNAAHO WA ASHAABAS SAFEENATE WA JA-A’LNAAHAA AAYATAL LIL-A’ALAMEEN.

Then We delivered him and those who were in the Ark, and made it a sign for all the nations.

وَاِبْرٰهِيْمَ اِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِ اعْبُدُوا اللّٰهَ وَاتَّقُوْهُ‌ ؕ ذٰ لِكُمْ خَيْرٌ لَّكُمْ اِنْ كُنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُوْنَ‏(16)

WA IBRAAHEEMA IZ QAALA LE-QAWMEHI’ BODUL LAAHA WAT-TAQOOH, ZAALEKUM KHAYRUL LAKUM IN KUNTUM TA’LAMOON.

And Abraham, when he said to his people, ‘Worship Allah and be wary of Him. That is better for you, should you know.

اِنَّمَا تَعْبُدُوْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ اَوْثَانًا وَّتَخْلُقُوْنَ اِفْكًا‌ ؕ اِنَّ الَّذِيْنَ تَعْبُدُوْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ لَا يَمْلِكُوْنَ لَكُمْ رِزْقًا فَابْتَغُوْا عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ الرِّزْقَ وَاعْبُدُوْهُ وَاشْكُرُوْا لَهٗ ؕ اِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُوْنَ‏(17)

INNAMAA TA’BODOONA MIN DOONIL LAAHE AWSAANANW WA TAKHLOQOONA IFKAA, INNAL LAZEENA TA’BODOONA MIN DOONIL LAAHE LAA YAMLEKOONA LAKUM RIZQAN FAB-TAGHOO I’NDAL LAAHIR RIZQA WA’BODOOHO WASH KOROO LAH, ELAYHE TURJA-O’ON.

What you worship instead of Allah are mere idols, and you invent a lie. Indeed those whom you worship besides Allah have no control over your provision. So seek all [your] provision from Allah, and worship Him and thank Him, and to Him you shall be brought back.’

وَاِنْ تُكَذِّبُوْا فَقَدْ كَذَّبَ اُمَمٌ مِّنْ قَبْلِكُمْ‌ؕ وَمَا عَلَى الرَّسُوْلِ اِلَّا الْبَلٰغُ الْمُبِيْنُ‏(18)

WA IN TOKAZZEBOO FAQAD KAZZABA OMAMUM MIN QABLEKUM, WA MAA A’LAR RASOOLE ILLAL BALAAGHUL MOBEEN.

If you impugn [the Apostle’s teaching], then [other] nations have impugned [likewise] before you, and the Apostle’s duty is only to communicate in clear terms.

اَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا كَيْفَ يُبْدِئُ اللّٰهُ الْخَلْقَ ثُمَّ يُعِيْدُهٗ ؕ اِنَّ ذٰ لِكَ عَلَى اللّٰهِ يَسِيْرٌ‏(19)

AWA LAM YARAW KAYFA YUBDEUL LAAHUL KHALQA SUMMA YO-E’EDOH, INNA ZAALEKA A’LAL LAAHE YASEER.

Have they not regarded how Allah originates the creation? Then He will bring it back. That is indeed easy for Allah.

قُلْ سِيْرُوْا فِى الْاَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوْا كَيْفَ بَدَاَ الْخَلْقَ‌ ثُمَّ اللّٰهُ يُنْشِئُ النَّشْاَةَ الْاٰخِرَةَ‌ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ عَلٰى كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيْرٌ‌ۚ‏(20)

QUL SEEROO FIL ARZE FAN-ZOROO KAYFA BA-DA-AL KHALQA SUMMAL LAAHO YUNSHE-UN NASH-ATAL AAKHERAH, INNAL LAAHA A’LAA KULLE SHAYIN QADEER.

Say, ‘Travel over the land and observe how He has originated the creation.’ Then Allah will bring about the genesis of the Hereafter. Indeed Allah has power over all things.

يُعَذِّبُ مَنْ يَّشَآءُ وَيَرْحَمُ مَنْ يَّشَآءُ ‌ۚ وَاِلَيْهِ تُقْلَبُوْنَ‏(21)

YO-A’ZZEBO MANY YASHAAA-O WA YARHAMO MANY YASHAAA, WA ELAYHE TUQLABOON.

He will punish whomever He wishes and have mercy on whomever He wishes, and to Him you will be returned.

وَمَاۤ اَنْتُمْ بِمُعْجِزِيْنَ فِى الْاَرْضِ وَلَا فِى السَّمَآءِ‌ وَمَا لَكُمْ مِّنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ مِنْ وَّلِىٍّ وَّلَا نَصِيْرٍ‏(22)

WA MAA ANTUM BE-MO’JEZEENA FIL ARZE WA LAA FIS SAMAAA, WA MAA LAKUM MIN DOONIL LAAHE MINW WALIYYINW WA LAA NASEER.

You cannot frustrate Him on the earth or in the sky, nor do you have besides Allah any guardian or helper.

وَالَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِاٰيٰتِ اللّٰهِ وَلِقَآئِهٖۤ اُولٰٓئِكَ يَئِسُوْا مِنْ رَّحْمَتِىْ وَاُولٰٓئِكَ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ اَلِيْمٌ‏(23)

WAL LAZEENA KAFAROO BE-AAYAATIL LAAHE WA LEQAAA-EHI OOLAAA-EKA YA-ESOO MIR RAHMATEE WA OOLAAA-EKA LAHUM A’ZAABUN ALEEM.

Those who deny the signs of Allah and the encounter with Him—they have despaired of My mercy, and for such there is a painful punishment.

فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهٖۤ اِلَّاۤ اَنْ قَالُوا اقْتُلُوْهُ اَوْ حَرِّقُوْهُ فَاَنْجٰٮهُ اللّٰهُ مِنَ النَّارِ ‌ؕ اِنَّ فِىْ ذٰ لِكَ لَاٰيٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يُّؤْمِنُوْنَ‏(24)

FAMAA KAANA JAWAABA QAWMEHI ILLAAA AN QAALUQ TOLOOHO AW HARREQOOHO FA-ANJAAHUL LAAHO MENAN NAAR, INNA FEE ZAALEKA LA-AAYAATIL LEQAWMINY YOAMENOON.

But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Kill him, or burn him.’ Then Allah delivered him from the fire. There are indeed signs in that for a people who have faith.

وَقَالَ اِنَّمَا اتَّخَذْتُمْ مِّنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ اَوْثَانًا ۙ مَّوَدَّةَ بَيْنِكُمْ فِى الْحَيٰوةِ الدُّنْيَا ‌ۚ ثُمَّ يَوْمَ الْقِيٰمَةِ يَكْفُرُ بَعْضُكُمْ بِبَعْضٍ وَّيَلْعَنُ بَعْضُكُمْ بَعْضًا  وَّمَاْوٰٮكُمُ النَّارُ وَمَا لَكُمْ مِّنْ نّٰصِرِيْنَ ۙ‏(25)

WA QAALA INNAMAT TAKHAZTUM MIN DOONIL LAAHE AWSAANAM, MAWADDATA BAYNAKUM FIL HAYAATID DUNYAA, SUMMA YAWMAL QEYAAMATE YAKFORO BA’ZOHUM BE-BA’ZINW WA YAL-A’NO BA’ZOKUM BA’ZANW, WA MAAWAAKUMUN NAARO WA MAA LAKUM MIN NAASEREEN.

He said, ‘You have taken idols [for worship] besides Allah for the sake of [mutual] affection amongst yourselves in the life of the world. Then on the Day of Resurrection you will disown one another and curse one another, and the Fire will be your abode, and you will not have any helpers.’

فَاٰمَنَ لَهٗ لُوْطٌ‌ۘ وَقَالَ اِنِّىْ مُهَاجِرٌ اِلٰى رَبِّىْ ؕ اِنَّهٗ هُوَ الْعَزِيْزُ الْحَكِيْمُ‏(26)

FA-AAMANA LAHU LOOT, WA QAALA INNEE MOHAAJERUN ELAA RABBEE, INNAHU HOWAL A’ZEEZUL HAKEEM.

Thereupon Lot believed in him, and he said, ‘Indeed I am migrating toward my Lord. Indeed He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.’

وَوَهَبْنَا لَهٗۤ اِسْحٰقَ وَيَعْقُوْبَ وَجَعَلْنَا فِىْ ذُرِّيَّتِهِ النُّبُوَّةَ وَالْكِتٰبَ وَاٰتَيْنٰهُ اَجْرَهٗ فِى الدُّنْيَا ‌ۚ وَاِنَّهٗ فِى الْاٰخِرَةِ لَمِنَ الصّٰلِحِيْنَ‏(27)

WA WAHABNAA LAHU ISHAAQA WA YA’QOOBA WA JA-A’LNAA FEE ZURRIYYATEHIN NOBUWWATA WAL KETAABA WA AATAYNAAHO AJRAHU FID DUNYAA, WA INNAHU FIL AAKHERATE LAMENAS SAALEHEEN.

And We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and We ordained among his descendants prophethood and the Book, and We gave him his reward in this world, and in the Hereafter he will indeed be among the Righteous.

وَلُوْطًا اِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهٖۤ اِنَّكُمْ لَتَاْتُوْنَ الْفَاحِشَةَ مَا سَبَقَكُمْ بِهَا مِنْ اَحَدٍ مِّنَ الْعٰلَمِيْنَ‏(28)

WA LOOTAN IZ QAALA LEQAWMEHI INNAKUM LA-TAATOONAL FAAHESHAH, MAA SABAQAKUM BEHAA MIN AHADIM MENAL A’ALAMEEN.

And Lot, when he said to his people, ‘You indeed commit an indecency none in the world has ever committed before you!

اَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَاْتُوْنَ الرِّجَالَ وَتَقْطَعُوْنَ السَّبِيْلَ ۙ وَتَاْ تُوْنَ فِىْ نَادِيْكُمُ الْمُنْكَرَ ‌ؕ فَمَا كَانَ جَوَابَ قَوْمِهٖۤ اِلَّاۤ اَنْ قَالُوا ائْتِنَا بِعَذَابِ اللّٰهِ اِنْ كُنْتَ مِنَ الصّٰدِقِيْنَ‏(29)

A-INNAKUM LA-TAA-TOONAR REJAALA WA TAQTA-O’ONAS SABEEL, WA TAA-TOONA FEE NAADEEKOMUL MUNKAR, FAMAA KAANA JAWAABA QAWMEHI ILLAA AN QAALOO E-ATENAA BE-A’ZAABIL LAAHE IN KUNTA MENAS SAADEQEEN.

What! Do you come to men, and cut off the way, and commit outrages in your gatherings?’ But the only answer of his people was that they said, ‘Bring down us Allah’s punishment, if you are truthful.’

قَالَ رَبِّ انْصُرْنِىْ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْمُفْسِدِيْنَ‏(30)

QAALA RABBIN SURNEE A’LAL QAWMIL MUFSEDEEN.

He said, ‘My Lord! Help me against this corruptive lot.’

وَلَمَّا جَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَاۤ اِبْرٰهِيْمَ بِالْبُشْرٰىۙ قَالُوْۤا اِنَّا مُهْلِكُوْۤا اَهْلِ هٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ ‌ۚ اِنَّ اَهْلَهَا كَانُوْا ظٰلِمِيْنَ‌ ۖ ‌ۚ‏(31)

WA LAMMAA JAAA-AT ROSOLONAA IBRAAHEEMA BIL-BUSHRAA, QAALOO INNAA MOHLEKOO AHLE HAAZEHIL QARYAH, INNA AHLAHAA KAANOO ZAALEMEEN.

And when Our messengers came to Abraham with the good news, they said, ‘We are indeed going to destroy the people of this town. Its people are indeed wrongdoers.’

قَالَ اِنَّ فِيْهَا لُوْطًا ‌ؕ قَالُوْا نَحْنُ اَعْلَمُ بِمَنْ فِيْهَا‌ لَنُنَجِّيَنَّهٗ وَاَهْلَهٗۤ اِلَّا امْرَاَتَهٗ كَانَتْ مِنَ الْغٰبِرِيْنَ‏(32)

QAALA INNA FEEHAA LOOTAA, QAALOO NAHNO A-A’LAMO BEMAN FEEHAA, LA-NONAJJE-YANNAHU WA AHLAHU ILLAM RA-ATAH, KAANAT MENAL GHAABEREEN.

He said, ‘Lot is in it.’ They said, ‘We know better those who are in it. We will surely deliver him and his family, except his wife: she shall be one of those who remain behind.’

وَلَمَّاۤ اَنْ جَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَا لُوْطًا سِىْٓءَ بِهِمْ وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرْعًا وَّقَالُوْا لَا تَخَفْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ‌ اِنَّا مُنَجُّوْكَ وَاَهْلَكَ اِلَّا امْرَاَتَكَ كَانَتْ مِنَ الْغٰبِرِيْنَ‏(33)

WA LAMMAA AN JAAA-AT ROSOLONAA LOOTAN SEEE-A BEHIM WA ZAAQA BEHIM ZAR-A’NW WA QAALOO LAA TAKHAF WA LAA TAHZAN, INNAA MONAJJOOKA WA AHLAKA ILLAM RA-ATAKA KAANAT MENAL GHAABEREEN.

And when Our messengers came to Lot, he was distressed on their account and in a predicament for their sake. But they said, ‘Do not be afraid, nor grieve! We shall deliver you and your family, except your wife: she will be one of those who remain behind.

اِنَّا مُنْزِلُوْنَ عَلٰٓى اَهْلِ هٰذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ رِجْزًا مِّنَ السَّمَآءِ بِمَا كَانُوْا يَفْسُقُوْنَ‏(34)

INNAA MUNZELOONA A’LAA AHLE HAAZEHIL QARYAHTE RIJZAM MENAS SAMAAA-E BEMAA KAANOO YAFSOQOON.

We are indeed going to bring down upon the people of this town a punishment from the sky because of the transgressions they used to commit.’

وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَا مِنْهَاۤ اٰيَةًۢ بَيِّنَةً لِّقَوْمٍ يَّعْقِلُوْنَ‏(35)

WA LAQAD TARAKNAA MINHAA AAYATAM BAYYENATIL LEQAWMINY YA’QELOON.

Certainly We have left of it a manifest sign for people who exercise their reason.

وَاِلٰى مَدْيَنَ اَخَاهُمْ شُعَيْبًا ۙ فَقَالَ يٰقَوْمِ اعْبُدُوا اللّٰهَ وَ ارْجُوا الْيَوْمَ الْاٰخِرَ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا فِى الْاَرْضِ مُفْسِدِيْنَ‏(36)

WA ELAA MADYANA AKHAAHUM SHO-A’YBAA, FAQAALA YAA QAWME’ BODUL LAAHA WAR JUL YAWMAL AAKHERA WA LAA TA’SAW FIL ARZE MUFSEDEEN.

And to Midian We sent Shu‘ayb, their brother. He said, ‘O my people! Worship Allah, and expect [to encounter] the Last Day, and do not act wickedly on the earth causing corruption.’

فَكَذَّبُوْهُ فَاَخَذَتْهُمُ الرَّجْفَةُ فَاَصْبَحُوْا فِىْ دَارِهِمْ جٰثِمِيْنَ‏(37)

FA-KAZZABOOHO FA-AKHAZATHOMUR RAJFATO FA-ASBAHOO FEE DAAREHIM JAASEMEEN.

But they impugned him, whereupon the earthquake seized them, and they lay lifeless prostrate in their homes.

وَعَادًا وَّثَمُوْدَا۟ وَقَدْ تَّبَيَّنَ لَكُمْ مِّنْ مَّسٰكِنِهِمْ‌ وَزَيَّنَ لَهُمُ الشَّيْطٰنُ اَعْمَالَهُمْ فَصَدَّهُمْ عَنِ السَّبِيْلِ وَكَانُوْا مُسْتَبْصِرِيْنَۙ‏(38)

WA A’ADANW WA SAMOODAA WA QAT TABAYYANA LAKUM MIM MASAAKENEHIM, WA ZAYYANA LAHOMUSH SHAYTAANO A-A’MAALAHUM FA-SADDAHUM A’NIS SABEELE WA KAANOO MUSTABSEREEN.

And ‘Ad and Thamud, [whose fate] is evident to you from their habitations. Satan made their deeds seem decorous to them, thus he barred them from the way [of Allah], though they used to be perceptive.

وَقَارُوْنَ وَفِرْعَوْنَ وَهَامٰنَ‌ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُمْ مُّوْسٰى بِالْبَيِّنٰتِ فَاسْتَكْبَرُوْا فِى الْاَرْضِ وَمَا كَانُوْا سٰبِقِيْنَ ‌ ۖ ‌ ۚ‏(39)

WA QAAROONA WA FIR-A’WNA WA HAAMAAN, WA LAQAD JAAA-AHUM MOOSAA BIL-BAYYENAATE FAS-TAKBAROO FIL ARZE WA MAA KAANOO SAABEQEEN.

And Korah, Pharaoh, and Haman. Certainly, Moses brought them manifest proofs, but they acted arrogantly in the land; though they could not outmaneuver [Allah].

فَكُلًّا اَخَذْنَا بِذَنْۢبِهٖ‌ ۚ فَمِنْهُمْ مَّنْ اَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِ حَاصِبًا‌ ۚ وَمِنْهُمْ مَّنْ اَخَذَتْهُ الصَّيْحَةُ‌ ۚ وَمِنْهُمْ مَّنْ خَسَفْنَا بِهِ الْاَرْضَ‌ ۚ وَمِنْهُمْ مَّنْ اَغْرَقْنَا‌ ۚ وَمَا كَانَ اللّٰهُ لِيَظْلِمَهُمْ وَلٰكِنْ كَانُوْۤا اَنْفُسَهُمْ يَظْلِمُوْنَ‏(40)

FA-KULLAN AKHAZNAA BE-ZAMBEH, FAMINHUM MAN ARSALNAA A’LAYHE HAASEBAA, WA MINHUM MAN AKHAZATHUS SAYHAH, WA MINHUM MAN AGRAQNAA, WA MAA KAANAL LAAHO LE-YAZLEMAHUM WA LAAKIN KAANOO ANFOSAHUM YAZLEMOON.

So We seized each [of them] for his sin: among them were those upon whom We unleashed a rain of stones, and among them were those who were seized by the Cry, and among them were those whom We caused the earth to swallow, and among them were those whom We drowned. It was not Allah who wronged them, but it was they who used to wrong themselves.

مَثَلُ الَّذِيْنَ اتَّخَذُوْا مِنْ دُوْنِ اللّٰهِ اَوْلِيَآءَ كَمَثَلِ الْعَنْكَبُوْتِ ‌ۖۚ اِتَّخَذَتْ بَيْتًا ‌ؕ وَ اِنَّ اَوْهَنَ الْبُيُوْتِ لَبَيْتُ الْعَنْكَبُوْتِ‌ۘ لَوْ كَانُوْا يَعْلَمُوْنَ‏(41)

MASALUL LAZEENAT TAKHAZOO MIN DOONIL LAAHE AWLE-YAAA-A KAMASALIL A’NKABOOT, ITTAKHAZAT BAYTAA, WA INNA AWHANAL BOYOOTE LA-BAYTUL A’NKABOOT, LAW KAANOO YA’LAMOON.

The parable of those who take guardians instead of Allah is that of the spider that takes a home, and indeed the frailest of homes is the home of a spider, had they known!

اِنَّ اللّٰهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا يَدْعُوْنَ مِنْ دُوْنِهٖ مِنْ شَىْءٍ‌ؕ وَهُوَ الْعَزِيْزُ الْحَكِيْمُ‏(42)

INNAL LAAHA YA’LAMO MAA YAD-O’ONA MIN DOONEHI MIN SHAY, WA HOWAL A’ZEEZUL HAKEEM.

Allah indeed knows whatever thing they invoke besides Him, and He is the All-mighty, the All-wise.

وَتِلْكَ الْاَمْثَالُ نَضْرِبُهَا لِلنَّاسِ‌ۚ وَمَا يَعْقِلُهَاۤ اِلَّا الْعٰلِمُوْنَ‏(43)

WA TILKAL AMSAALO NAZREBOHAA LIN-NAAS, WA MAA YA’QELOHAA ILLAL A’ALEMOON.

We draw these parables for mankind; but no one grasps them except those who have knowledge.

خَلَقَ اللّٰهُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الْاَرْضَ بِالْحَقِّ‌ ؕ اِنَّ فِىْ ذٰ لِكَ لَاٰيَةً لِّلْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ‏(44)

KHALAQAL LAAHUS SAMAAWAATE WAL ARZA BIL-HAQ, INNA FEE ZAALEKA LA-AAYATAL LIL MOAMENEEN.

Allah created the heavens and the earth with consummate wisdom. There is indeed a sign in that for the faithful.

اُتْلُ مَاۤ اُوْحِىَ اِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتٰبِ وَاَقِمِ الصَّلٰوةَ ‌ؕ اِنَّ الصَّلٰوةَ تَنْهٰى عَنِ الْفَحْشَآءِ وَالْمُنْكَرِ‌ؕ وَلَذِكْرُ اللّٰهِ اَكْبَرُ‌ؕ وَاللّٰهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُوْنَ‏(45)

UTLO MAAA OOHEYA ELAYKA MENAL KETAABE WA AQEMIS SALAAH, INNAS SALAATA TANHAA A’NIL FAHSHAAA-E WAL MUNKAR, WA LAZIKRUL LAAHE AKBAR, WAL LAAHO YA’LAMO MAA YASNA-O’ON.

Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book, and maintain the prayer. Indeed the prayer restrains from indecent and wrongful conduct, and the remembrance of Allah is surely greater. And Allah knows whatever [deeds] you do.

وَلَا تُجَادِلُوْٓا اَهْلَ الْكِتٰبِ اِلَّا بِالَّتِىْ هِىَ اَحْسَنُۖ اِلَّا الَّذِيْنَ ظَلَمُوْا مِنْهُمْ‌ وَقُوْلُوْٓا اٰمَنَّا بِالَّذِىْۤ اُنْزِلَ اِلَيْنَا وَاُنْزِلَ اِلَيْكُمْ وَاِلٰهُنَا وَاِلٰهُكُمْ وَاحِدٌ وَّنَحْنُ لَهٗ مُسْلِمُوْنَ‏(46)

WA LAA TOJAADELOO AHLAL KETAABE ILLAA BIL-LATEE HEYA AHSAN, ILLAL LAZEENA ZALAMOO MINHUM WA QOOLOO AAMANNAA BIL-LAZEE UNZELA ELAYNAA WA UNZELA ELAYKUM WA ELAAHONAA WA ELAAHOKUM WAAHEDUNW WA NAHNO LAHU MUSLEMOON.

Do not argue with the People of the Book except in a manner which is best, except such of them as are wrongdoers, and say, ‘We believe in what has been sent down to us and in what has been sent down to you; our God and your God is one [and the same], and to Him do we submit.’

وَكَذٰلِكَ اَنْزَلْنَاۤ اِلَيْكَ الْكِتٰبَ‌ؕ فَالَّذِيْنَ اٰتَيْنٰهُمُ الْكِتٰبَ يُؤْمِنُوْنَ بِهٖ‌ۚ وَمِنْ هٰٓؤُلَاۤءِ مَنْ يُّؤْمِنُ بِهٖ ‌ؕ وَ مَا يَجْحَدُ بِاٰيٰتِنَاۤ اِلَّا الْكٰفِرُوْنَ‏(47)

WA KAZAALEKA ANZALNAA ELAYKAL KETAAB, FAL-LAZEENA AATAYNAAHOMUL KETAABA YOAMENOONA BEH, WA MIN HAA-OO-LAAA-E MANY YOAMENO BEH, WA MAA YAJHADO BE-AAYAATENAA ILLAL KAAFEROON.

Thus We have sent down the Book to you; those to whom We have given the Book believe in it, and of these there are some who believe in it, and none contests Our signs except the faithless.

وَمَا كُنْتَ تَتْلُوْا مِنْ قَبْلِهٖ مِنْ كِتٰبٍ وَّلَا تَخُطُّهٗ بِيَمِيْنِكَ‌ اِذًا لَّارْتَابَ الْمُبْطِلُوْنَ‏(48)

WA KUNTA TATLOO MIN QABLEHI MIN KETAABINW WA LAA TAKHUTTOHU BE-YAMEENEKA EZAL LARTAABAL MUBTELOON.

You did not use to recite any scripture before it, nor did you write it with your right hand, for then the impugners would have been skeptical.

بَلْ هُوَ اٰيٰتٌۢ بَيِّنٰتٌ فِىْ صُدُوْرِ الَّذِيْنَ اُوْتُوا الْعِلْمَ‌ؕ وَمَا يَجْحَدُ بِاٰيٰتِنَاۤ اِلَّا الظّٰلِمُوْنَ‏(49)

BAL HOWA AAYAATUM BAYYENAATUN FEE SODOORIL LAZEENA OOTUL I’LM, WA MAA YAJHADO BE-AAYAATENAA ILLAZ ZAALEMOON.

Indeed, it is [present as] manifest signs in the breasts of those who have been given knowledge, and none contests Our signs except wrongdoers.

وَقَالُوْا لَوْلَاۤ اُنْزِلَ عَلَيْهِ اٰيٰتٌ مِّنْ رَّبِّهٖ‌ؕ قُلْ اِنَّمَا الْاٰيٰتُ عِنْدَ اللّٰهِ ؕ وَاِنَّمَاۤ اَنَا۟ نَذِيْرٌ مُّبِيْنٌ‏(50)

WA QAALOO LAWLAA UNZELA A’LAYHE AAYAATUM MIR RABBEH, QUL INNAMAL AAYAATO I’NDAL LAAH, WA INNAMAA ANAA NAZEERUM MOBEEN.

They say, ‘Why has not some sign been sent down to him from his Lord?’ Say, ‘These signs are only from Allah, and I am only a manifest warner.’

اَوَلَمْ يَكْفِهِمْ اَنَّاۤ اَنْزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتٰبَ يُتْلٰى عَلَيْهِمْ‌ؕ اِنَّ فِىْ ذٰلِكَ لَرَحْمَةً وَّذِكْرٰى لِقَوْمٍ يُّؤْمِنُوْنَ‏(51)

AWA LAM YAKFEHIM ANNAA ANZALNAA A’LAYKAL KETAABA YUTLAA A’LAYHIM, INNA FEE ZAALEKA LA-RAHMATANW WA ZIKRAA LEQAWMINY YOAMENOON.

Does it not suffice them that We have sent down to you the Book which is recited to them? There is indeed in that a mercy and admonition for a people who have faith.

قُلْ كَفٰى بِاللّٰهِ بَيْنِىْ وَبَيْنَكُمْ شَهِيْدًا ‌ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِى السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ‌ ؕ وَالَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا بِالْبَاطِلِ وَكَفَرُوْا بِاللّٰهِ ۙ اُولٰٓئِكَ هُمُ الْخٰسِرُوْنَ‏(52)

QUL KAFAA BIL LAAHE BAYNEE WA BAYNAKUM SHAHEEDAA, YA’LAMO MAA FIS SAMAAWAATE WAL ARZ, WAL LAZEENA AAMANOO BIL-BAATELE WA KAFAROO BIL LAAHE, OOLAAA-EKA HOMUL KHAASEROON.

Say, ‘Allah suffices as a witness between me and you: He knows whatever there is in the heavens and the earth. Those who put faith in falsehood and defy Allah—it is they who are the losers.’

وَيَسْتَعْجِلُوْنَكَ بِالْعَذَابِ‌ؕ وَلَوْلَاۤ اَجَلٌ مُّسَمًّى لَّجَآءَهُمُ الْعَذَابُؕ وَلَيَاْتِيَنَّهُمْ بَغْتَةً وَّهُمْ لَا يَشْعُرُوْنَ‏(53)

WA YASTA’JELOONAKA BIL A’ZAAB, WA LAW LAA AJALUM MOSAMMAAL LA-JAAA-AHOMUL A’ZAAB, WA LAYAATEYANNAHUM BAGHTATANW WA HUM LAA YASH-O’ROON.

They ask you to hasten the punishment. Yet were it not for a specified time, the punishment would have surely overtaken them. Surely, it will overtake them suddenly while they are unaware.

يَسْتَعْجِلُوْنَكَ بِالْعَذَابِؕ وَ اِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمُحِيْطَةٌۢ بِالْكٰفِرِيْنَۙ‏(54)

YASTA’JELOONAKA BIL-A’ZAAB, WA INNA JAHANNAMA LA-MOHEETATUM BIL-KAAFEREEN.

They ask you to hasten the punishment, and indeed hell will besiege the faithless

يَوْمَ يَغْشٰٮهُمُ الْعَذَابُ مِنْ فَوْقِهِمْ وَمِنْ تَحْتِ اَرْجُلِهِمْ وَيَقُوْلُ ذُوْقُوْا مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُوْنَ‏(55)

YAWMA YAGHSHAA-HOMUL A’ZAABO MIN FAWQEHIM WA MIN TAHTE ARJOLEHIM WA YAQOOLO ZOOQOO MAA KUNTUM TA’LAMOON.

on the day when the punishment envelopes them, from above them and from under their feet, and He will say, ‘Taste what you used to do!’

يٰعِبَادِىَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْۤا اِنَّ اَرْضِىْ وَاسِعَةٌ فَاِيَّاىَ فَاعْبُدُوْنِ‏(56)

YAA E’BAADEYAL LAZEENA AAMANOO INNA ARZEE WAASE-A’TUN FA-IYYAA-YA FA’BODOON.

O My servants who have faith! My earth is indeed vast. So worship [only] Me.

كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ الْمَوْتِ ثُمَّ اِلَيْنَا تُرْجَعُوْنَ‏(57)

KULLO NAFSIN ZAAA-EQATUL MAWT, SUMMA ELAYNAA TURJA-O’ON.

Every soul shall taste death. Then you shall be brought back to Us.

وَالَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوْا الصّٰلِحٰتِ لَنُبَوِّئَنَّهُمْ مِّنَ الْجَنَّةِ غُرَفًا تَجْرِىْ مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الْاَنْهٰرُ خٰلِدِيْنَ فِيْهَا ‌ؕ نِعْمَ اَجْرُ الْعٰمِلِيْنَ‌ۖ‏(58)

WAL LAZEENA AAMANOO WA A’MELUS SAALEHAATE LA-NOBAWWE-ANNAHUM MENAL JANNATE GHORAFAN TAJREE MIN TAHTEHAL ANHAARO KHAALEDEENA FEEHAA, NE’MA AJRUL A’AMELEENAL.

Those who have faith and do righteous deeds, We will surely settle them in the lofty abodes of paradise, with streams running in them, to remain in them [forever]. How excellent is the reward of the workers!

الَّذِيْنَ صَبَرُوْا وَعَلٰى رَبِّهِمْ يَتَوَكَّلُوْنَ‏(59)

LAZEENA SABAROO WA A’LAA RABBEHIM YATAWAKKALOON.

—Those who are patient and who put their trust in their Lord.

وَكَاَيِّنْ مِّنْ دَآبَّةٍ لَّا تَحْمِلُ رِزْقَهَاۖ اللّٰهُ يَرْزُقُهَا وَاِيَّاكُمْ‌‌ۖ وَهُوَ السَّمِيْعُ الْعَلِيْمُ‏(60)

WA KA-AYYIM MIN DAAAB-BATIL LAA TAHMELO RIZQAHAA, ALLAAHO YARZOQOHAA WA IYYAAKUM, WA HOWAS SAMEE-U’L A’LEEM.

How many an animal there is that does not carry its own provision. Allah provides them and you, and He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing.

وَلَئِنْ سَاَلْتَهُمْ مَّنْ خَلَقَ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضَ وَسَخَّرَ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ لَيَقُوْلُنَّ اللّٰهُ‌ۚ فَاَنّٰى يُؤْفَكُوْنَ‏(61)

WA LAIN SA-ALTAHUM MAN KHALAQAS SAMAAWAATE WAL ARZA WA SAKHKHARASH SHAMSA WAL QAMARA LAYAQOOLUNNAL LAAH, FA-ANNAA YOAFEKOON.

If you ask them, ‘Who created the heavens and the earth, and who has disposed the sun and the moon?’ They will surely say, ‘Allah.’ Then where do they stray?

اَللّٰهُ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَنْ يَّشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهٖ وَيَقْدِرُ لَهٗ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰهَ بِكُلِّ شَىْءٍ عَلِيْمٌ‏(62)

ALLAAHO YABSOTUR RIZQA LEMANY YASHAAA-O MIN E’BAADEHI WA YAQDERO LAH, INNAL LAAHA BEKULLE SHAYIN A’LEEM.

Allah expands the provision for whomever He wishes of His servants, and tightens it for him. Indeed Allah has knowledge of all things.

وَلَئِنْ سَاَلْتَهُمْ مَّنْ نَّزَّلَ مِنَ السَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَاَحْيَا بِهِ الْاَرْضَ مِنْۢ بَعْدِ مَوْتِهَا لَيَقُوْلُنَّ اللّٰهُ‌ؕ قُلِ الْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ‌ؕ بَلْ اَكْثَرُهُمْ لَا يَعْقِلُوْنَ‏(63)

WA LAIN SA-ALTAHUM AMN NAZZALA MENAS SAMAAA-E MAAA-AN FA-AHYAA BEHIL ARZA MIM BA’DE MAWTEHAA LAYAQOOLUNNAL LAAH, QOLIL HAMDO LILLAAH, BAL AKSAROHUM LAA YA’QELOON.

And if you ask them, ‘Who sends down water from the sky, with which He revives the earth after its death?’ They will surely say, ‘Allah.’ Say, ‘All praise belongs to Allah!’ But most of them do not exercise their reason.

وَمَا هٰذِهِ الْحَيٰوةُ الدُّنْيَاۤ اِلَّا لَهْوٌ وَّلَعِبٌ‌ؕ وَاِنَّ الدَّارَ الْاٰخِرَةَ لَهِىَ الْحَيَوَانُ‌ۘ لَوْ كَانُوْا يَعْلَمُوْنَ‏(64)

WA MAA HAAZEHIL HAYAATUD DUNYAA ILLAA LAHWUNW WA LA-E’B, WA INNAD DAARAL AAKHERATA LAHEYAL HAYAWAAN, LAW KAANOO YA’LAMOON.

The life of this world is nothing but diversion and play, but the abode of the Hereafter is indeed Life (itself), had they known!

فَاِذَا رَكِبُوْا فِى الْفُلْكِ دَعَوُا اللّٰهَ مُخْلِصِيْنَ لَهُ الدِّيْنَ ۚ فَلَمَّا نَجّٰٮهُمْ اِلَى الْبَرِّ اِذَا هُمْ يُشْرِكُوْنَۙ‏(65)

FA-EZAA RAKEBOO FIL FULKE DA-A’WUL LAAHA MUKHLESEENA LAHUD DEEN, FALAMMAA NAJJAAHUM ELAL BARRE EZAA HUM YUSHREKOONA.

When they board the ship, they invoke Allah putting exclusive faith in Him, but when He delivers them to land, behold, they ascribe partners [to Him],

لِيَكْفُرُوْا بِمَاۤ اٰتَيْنٰهُمْۙۚ وَلِيَتَمَتَّعُوْا‌فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُوْنَ‏(66)

LE-YAKFOROO BEMAA AATAYNAAHUM, WA LE-YATAMATTA-O’O, FA-SAWFA YA’LAMOON.

being ungrateful for what We have given them! Let them enjoy. Soon they will know!

اَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا اَنَّا جَعَلْنَا حَرَمًا اٰمِنًا وَّيُتَخَطَّفُ النَّاسُ مِنْ حَوْلِهِمْ‌ ؕ اَفَبِالْبَاطِلِ يُؤْمِنُوْنَ وَبِنِعْمَةِ اللّٰهِ يَكْفُرُوْنَ‏(67)

AWA LAM YARAW ANNAA JA-A’LNAA HARAMAN AAMENANW WA YOTAKHATTAFUN NAASO MIN HAWLEHIM, AFA-BIL-BAATELE YOAMENOONA WA BE-NE’MATIL LAAHE YAKFOROON.

Have they not seen that We have appointed a safe sanctuary, while the people are despoiled all around them? Would they then believe in falsehood and be ungrateful toward the blessing of Allah?

وَمَنْ اَظْلَمُ مِمَّنِ افْتَرٰى عَلَى اللّٰهِ كَذِبًا اَوْ كَذَّبَ بِالْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهٗ‌ؕ اَلَيْسَ فِىْ جَهَنَّمَ مَثْوًى لِّلْكٰفِرِيْنَ‏(68)

WA MAN AZLAMO MIMMANIF TARAA A’LAL LAAHE KAZEBAN AW KAZZABA BIL-HAQQE LAMMAA JAAA-AH, A-LAYSA FEE JAHANNAMA MASWAL LIL-KAAFEREEN.

Who is a greater wrongdoer than him who fabricates a lie against Allah, or denies the truth when it comes to him? Is not the [final] abode of the faithless in hell?

وَالَّذِيْنَ جَاهَدُوْا فِيْنَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا ‌ؕ وَاِنَّ اللّٰهَ لَمَعَ الْمُحْسِنِيْنَ‏(69)

WAL LAZEENA JAAHADOO FEENAA LA-NAHDEYANNAHUM SOBOLANAA, WA INNAL LAAHA LA-MA-A’L MOHSENEEN.

As for those who strive in Us, We shall surely guide them in Our ways, and Allah is indeed with the virtuous.
